Sea Quarks Contribution To The Nucleon Magnetic Moment And Charge Radius At The Physical Point, Raza Sabbir Sufian, Yi-Bo Yang, Jian Liang, Terrence Draper, Keh-Fei Liu

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We report a comprehensive analysis of the light and strange disconnected-sea quarks contribution to the nucleon magnetic moment, charge radius, and the electric and magnetic form factors. The lattice QCD calculation includes ensembles across several lattice volumes and lattice spacings with one of the ensembles at the physical pion mass. We adopt a model-independent extrapolation of the nucleon magnetic moment and the charge radius. We have performed a simultaneous chiral, infinite volume, and continuum extrapolation in a global fit to calculate results in the continuum limit. We find that the combined light and strange disconnected-sea quarks contribution to the nucleon …

Professional Practices (ART 399)

For me, art is centered on shifting perspectives, the analysis of communication and the impact of art on our society. It is a reflection of a cultural collective consciousness; manifestations of a collection of beliefs and worldviews that function both as a time capsule and as a direct line into the world of ideas. I create work that is fundamentally founded in personal exploration and interpretation of the artwork at hand. Each piece is, in essence, a catalyst for discovery. For this reason I use a largely minimalist approach in creating objects that have a strong phenomenological presence and have …

In And Out And In Again: An Analysis Of Length Of Time Between Successful Treatment Program Completion And Relapse And Subsequent Reentry, Jennifer L. Heermance Dec 2017

In And Out And In Again: An Analysis Of Length Of Time Between Successful Treatment Program Completion And Relapse And Subsequent Reentry, Jennifer L. Heermance

Honors Capstones

While there is a plethora of information on addiction relapse, research is lacking on whether or not there is a measurable effect on relapse rates by clients completing a residential treatment stay. Additionally, there is a dearth of research about whether a previous residential stay could impact the length of time before an addict seeks additional inpatient treatment. My objectives were to determine the correlations between various factors and relapse and program readmittance times. The experiment was done via a confidential survey taken voluntarily by a total of 46 individuals, including 24 women and 22 men in residential drug rehabilitation …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Thermoresponsive Hydrogels Based On N-Isopropylacrylamide Crosslinked With 4,4′-Dihydroxybiphenyl Diacrylate, Shuo Tang, Martha Floy, Rohit Bhandari, Manjula Sunkara, Andrew J. Morris, Thomas D. Dziubla, J. Zach Hilt Dec 2017

Synthesis And Characterization Of Thermoresponsive Hydrogels Based On N-Isopropylacrylamide Crosslinked With 4,4′-Dihydroxybiphenyl Diacrylate, Shuo Tang, Martha Floy, Rohit Bhandari, Manjula Sunkara, Andrew J. Morris, Thomas D. Dziubla, J. Zach Hilt

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

A novel crosslinker [4,4′-dihydroxybiphenyl diacrylate (44BDA)] was developed, and a series of temperature-responsive hydrogels were synthesized through free radical polymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) with 44BDA. The temperature-responsive behavior of the resulting gels was characterized by swelling studies, and the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of the hydrogels was characterized through differential scanning calorimetry. Increased content of 44BDA led to a decreased swelling ratio and shifted the LCST to lower temperatures. These novel hydrogels also displayed resiliency through multiple swelling–deswelling cycles, and their temperature responsiveness was reversible. The successful synthesis of NIPAAm-based hydrogels crosslinked with 44BDA has led to a …

Effect Of Topography On Subglacial Discharge And Submarine Melting During Tidewater Glacier Retreat., Jason M. Amundson, D. Carroll Dec 2017

Effect Of Topography On Subglacial Discharge And Submarine Melting During Tidewater Glacier Retreat., Jason M. Amundson, D. Carroll

Faculty, Staff, and Students

To first order, subglacial discharge depends on climate, which determines precipitation fluxes and glacier mass balance, and the rate of glacier volume change. For tidewater glaciers, large and rapid changes in glacier volume can occur independent of climate change due to strong glacier dynamic feedbacks. Using an idealized tidewater glacier model, we show that these feedbacks produce secular variations in subglacial discharge that are influenced by subglacial topography. Retreat along retrograde bed slopes (into deep water) results in rapid surface lowering and coincident increases in subglacial discharge. Consequently, submarine melting of glacier termini, which depends on subglacial discharge and ocean …

Reduced Vertical Displacement Of The Center Of Mass Is Not Accompanied By Reduced Oxygen Uptake During Walking, Shane R. Wurdeman, Peter C. Raffalt, Nicholas Stergiou Dec 2017

Reduced Vertical Displacement Of The Center Of Mass Is Not Accompanied By Reduced Oxygen Uptake During Walking, Shane R. Wurdeman, Peter C. Raffalt, Nicholas Stergiou

Journal Articles

The six determinants of gait proposed that the goal of gait is to minimize vertical displacement of the body’s center of mass (CoM) with the objective to optimize energy expenditure. On the contrary, recent investigations suggest that reduced vertical displacement leads to an increase in energy expenditure. However, these investigations had the included subjects deliberately changing their gait, which could bias the endpoint measures. The present study investigated the effect of reduced vertical displacement of the CoM on oxygen uptake and walking economy without imposing altered gait patterns. This was accomplished by having subjects walk on a curved treadmill and …

Heritage And Identity Of Indigenous Peoples A Comparative Study Of American Indians And Bedouins Of Jordan, Louis Quinn Intres Dec 2017

Heritage And Identity Of Indigenous Peoples A Comparative Study Of American Indians And Bedouins Of Jordan, Louis Quinn Intres

Student Theses and Dissertations

Humankind is represented by an ever changing number of people groupings which are distinguishable as unique from one another by physical traits, ancestry, and genetics. We acknowledged our differences by the use of terms denoting race, ethnicity, skin color, geography, and innumerable other factors. The variances between and among cultures and civilizations easily identifies our many differences but also adds value to the human race as a whole. We also have much in common. Intrinsic to our common human-ness are the questions we each ask of ourselves: Who am I? Why am I here? What is my role in society? …

Conjugated Dynamic Modeling On Vanadium Redox Flow Battery With Non-Constant Variance For Renewable Power Plant Applications, Abu Nayem Md. Asraf Siddiquee

Student Theses and Dissertations

A parametric modeling study has been carried out to assess the impact of change in operating parameters on the performance of Vanadium Redox Flow Battery (VRFB). The objective of this research is to develop a computer program to predict the dynamic behavior of VRFB combining fluid mechanics, reaction kinetics, and electric circuit. The computer program was developed using Maple 2015 and calculations were made at different operating parameters. Modeling results show that the discharging time increases from 2.2 hours to 6.7 hours when the concentration of V2+ in electrolytes increases from 1M to 3M. The operation time during the charging …

Analyzing Non-Colinearly Coupled Timoshenko Beams Via The Exterior Matrix Method, Prabu Annamalai Dec 2017

Analyzing Non-Colinearly Coupled Timoshenko Beams Via The Exterior Matrix Method, Prabu Annamalai

Student Theses and Dissertations

We analyze the in-plane vibrations of a structure consisting of several Timoshenko beams joined together non-collinearly. We also consider the possibility of adding dissipative dampers in the structure. Using the exterior matrix method, we nd that the solution matrix can be expressed as a perturbation series over a small parameter and that the leading term of this series gives the solution to the Euler-Bernoulli beam equation. We then show how the exterior matrix method can be used to nd the eigenfunctions, via adding a small dash-pot at an arbitrary point in the structure, and seeing how much this dash-pot affects …

Optimization Of Parameters For The Densification (Pelletization) Of Cereal Crop Residues And Feasibility Study Of Pellet Plant Development In The State Of Arkansas From Economic Perspective, Shyam Thapa Dec 2017

Optimization Of Parameters For The Densification (Pelletization) Of Cereal Crop Residues And Feasibility Study Of Pellet Plant Development In The State Of Arkansas From Economic Perspective, Shyam Thapa

Student Theses and Dissertations

Conventional cereal crop residues, namely, rice (Oryza sativa L.), corn (Zea mays L.), and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is very abundant and readily available widely. It has been a nuisance to agronomic producers to manage these immense “so-called wastes”. The Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA) promulgated by the United States and The EU’s renewable energy directive mandated the substantial incorporation of renewable energy in their final energy consumption. These led to the increase in R&D’s on biomass and bioenergy products in the United States as well. Hammer mill grinds of different cereal crop residues, rice, wheat, and corn, sieved …

Relationships Between Athletic Success And Applications, Timothy Grover Jr Dec 2017

Relationships Between Athletic Success And Applications, Timothy Grover Jr

Sport Management Undergraduate

This study was conducted to see what relationship exists between markers of athletic success of NCAA Division I FBS football teams and college applications. There have been multiple studies in the past that have proven this theory to be correct. However, the goal of this study was to understand if these same results can be seen with members outside of the power five conferences. Using systematic sampling, 31 members of the MWC, Conference-USA, MAC, Sun Belt, and AAC were chosen for this study. The data was collected over a 3-year period from 2012-2014 for all athletic success variables, which were …

Technology Planning For Aligning Emerging Business Models And Regulatory Structures: The Case Of Electric Vehicle Charging And The Smart Grid, Kelly R. Cowan Dec 2017

Technology Planning For Aligning Emerging Business Models And Regulatory Structures: The Case Of Electric Vehicle Charging And The Smart Grid, Kelly R. Cowan

Dissertations and Theses

Smart grid has been described as the Energy Internet: Where Energy Technology meets Information Technology. The incorporation of such technology into vast existing utility infrastructures offers many advantages, including possibilities for new smart appliances, energy management systems, better integration of renewable energy, value added services, and new business models, both for supply- and demand-side management. Smart grid also replaces aging utility technologies that are becoming increasingly unreliable, as the average ages for many critical components in utility systems now exceed their original design lives. However, while smart grid offers the promise of revolutionizing utility delivery systems, many questions remain about …

Utilizing High-Resolution Archived Transit Data To Study Before-And-After Travel-Speed And Travel-Time Conditions, Travis Bradley Glick Dec 2017

Utilizing High-Resolution Archived Transit Data To Study Before-And-After Travel-Speed And Travel-Time Conditions, Travis Bradley Glick

Dissertations and Theses

Travel times, operating speeds, and service reliability influence costs and service attractiveness. This paper outlines an approach to quantify how these metrics change after a modification of roadway design or transit routes using archived transit data. The Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon (TriMet), Portland's public transportation provider, archives automatic vehicle location (AVL) data for all buses as part of their bus dispatch system (BDS). This research combines three types of AVL data (stop event, stop disturbance, and high-resolution) to create a detailed account of transit behavior; this probe data gives insights into the behavior of transit as well as …

Towards Approaches And Techniques For Analysing Wifi Location Data, John Mcauley, Clement Roux, James Little Dec 2017

Towards Approaches And Techniques For Analysing Wifi Location Data, John Mcauley, Clement Roux, James Little

Conference papers

Citieshaveanincreasinglydensenetworkofconnectedaccess points that enable individuals and groups to access the web on a range of different devices. Although, in most cases, the data collected from these networks is anonymised, when aggregated, it provides a rich illustration of how cities, public places and urban spaces are used. However, making use of this data can prove challenging as rarely, due to anonymization and data protection measures, is the data labelled and often the accuracy of the location information is questionable. Given these constraints, we have investigated a set of methods that can be applied to anonymous WiFi- location-based data. Through two specific …

Multi-Hazard Performance Assessment Of High-Rise Buildings, Jad El Khoury Antoun Dec 2017

Multi-Hazard Performance Assessment Of High-Rise Buildings, Jad El Khoury Antoun

LSU Master's Theses

In the last few decades, there has been an important increase in building high-rise constructions in many cities around the world. Since they offer several benefits in populous areas in terms of space efficiency, economy and sustainability, tower buildings attracted practitioners and researchers to understand better their exclusive behavior and response to natural hazards (e.g., hurricanes, earthquakes). Because of their flexibility and their commonly limited damping, skyscrapers are more susceptible to wind and earthquake actions than low- and mid-rise buildings. Moreover, many locations are prone to multiple hazards; hence, it is important to understand thoroughly the structural behavior of structures …

Structural Insights Into The Potency Of Sk Channel Positive Modulators, Young-Woo Nam, Razan Orfali, Tingting Liu, Kunqian Yu, Meng Cui, Heike Wulff, Miao Zhang Dec 2017

Structural Insights Into The Potency Of Sk Channel Positive Modulators, Young-Woo Nam, Razan Orfali, Tingting Liu, Kunqian Yu, Meng Cui, Heike Wulff, Miao Zhang

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Small-conductance Ca2+-activated K+ (SK) channels play essential roles in the regulation of cellular excitability and have been implicated in neurological and cardiovascular diseases through both animal model studies and human genetic association studies. Over the past two decades, positive modulators of SK channels such as NS309 and 1-EBIO have been developed. Our previous structural studies have identified the binding pocket of 1-EBIO and NS309 that is located at the interface between the channel and calmodulin. In this study, we took advantage of four compounds with potencies varying over three orders of magnitude, including 1-EBIO, NS309, SKS-11 (6-bromo-5-methyl-1H-indole-2,3-dione-3-oxime) and …
