Ocean Waves Workshop
Wave measurement is one of the major components for any ocean observation program, however, it is also the most challenging one due to its complexity. For Oil & Gas community, wave data is often used for platform stability calculation, operational decision making, structure fatigue analysis, and engineering design criteria.

Input Combination To Activate Different Input Modes Utilizing A Presence-Sensitive Screen, Thomas Price, Justin Lewis
Input Combination To Activate Different Input Modes Utilizing A Presence-Sensitive Screen, Thomas Price, Justin Lewis
Defensive Publications Series
A computing device is described that changes input modes associated with a presence-sensitive screen, based on tactile user inputs detected by touch and/or pressure sensors that are distinct from the presence-sensitive screen. Input modes define the actions taken by a computing device in response to receiving indications of user input at the presence-sensitive screen, such as navigating through a user interface of the computing device, adjusting a setting of the computing device, or altering a state of the computing device. The computing device interprets inputs detected at the sensors to change which functions are performed when a user provides subsequent …

Scorpions Of The Horn Of Africa (Arachnida: Scorpiones). Part Xii. Pandinurus Hangarale Sp. N. (Scorpionidae) From Somaliland And A Review Of Type Locality And True Distribution Of Pandinurus Smithi (Pocock, 1897), František Kovařík, Graeme Lowe, Tomáš Mazuch, Ahmed Ibrahim Awale, Jana Štundlová, František Šťáhlavský
Euscorpius
Pandinurus hangarale sp. n. from Somaliland is described and fully complemented with color photos of live and preserved specimens, as well as its habitat. Hemispermatophore of P. hangarale sp. n. is illustrated and described. In addition to the analyses of external morphology and hemispermatophores, we also describe the karyotype of P. hangarale sp. n. (2n=120). Known localities of Pandinurus smithi (Pocock, 1897) are compiled; the type locality is not in Somaliland but in Ethiopia (Turfa) and in reality it is probably an endemic of Ethiopia.

Timeout Mechanism For Latency-Critical Systems, Shu-Yi Yu
Timeout Mechanism For Latency-Critical Systems, Shu-Yi Yu
Defensive Publications Series
A system and method are disclosed for managing timeout in latency-critical systems. The method uses a global running timer by which each transaction is given a deadline when it enters the queue, calculated as: deadline = current time + timeout threshold of its QoS (quality of service). The deadline is stored with the corresponding transaction. The total trackable time is divided into 4 quadrants by its 2 most significant bits (MSB). Time wrapping beyond the saturation point is tracked separately from total trackable time. For transactions with deadlines behind the current time but ahead of the saturation point, their deadlines …

Assessing Preservation Priorities Of Caves And Karst Areas Using The Frequency Of Endemic Cave-Dwelling Species, Eugen Nitzu, Marius Vlaicu, Andrei Giurginca, Ioana N. Meleg, Ionut Popa, Augustin Nae, Ştefan Baba
Assessing Preservation Priorities Of Caves And Karst Areas Using The Frequency Of Endemic Cave-Dwelling Species, Eugen Nitzu, Marius Vlaicu, Andrei Giurginca, Ioana N. Meleg, Ionut Popa, Augustin Nae, Ştefan Baba
International Journal of Speleology
Endemic and rare species as bioindicators of habitat vulnerability were used to develop protection and management plans for biotope prioritization (mainly islands habitats, lava tubes or groundwaters). Due to their narrow distribution, the endemic species (species confined to a restricted geographic area) are more susceptible to ecological disequilibrium and habitat loss than the widespread ones. Consequently, endemics become endangered in the context of ecological disturbance caused by anthropogenic pressure, making them suitable candidates to assess environmental preservation needs. Taking into consideration that most of the stygobitic and troglobitic species are endemic and confined to specific karst areas, based on their …

Bioluminescent Sensing Systems For Cytokines And Cancer Biomarker Detection, Xiaowen Yu
Bioluminescent Sensing Systems For Cytokines And Cancer Biomarker Detection, Xiaowen Yu
Open Access Dissertations
Bioluminescence is the generation of light through a natural oxidation chemical reaction, thus eliminating the need for an external light source which eliminates background fluorescence. This results in higher signal-to-noise ratio when compared to fluorescence, making it suitable for use as a label in ultra-sensitive detection applications. Herein, a multiplexed assay to measure three analytes simultaneously in a single solution by employing the variants of the photoprotein aequorin (AEQ) has been demonstrated. Aequorin, natively found in jellyfish Aequorea victoria, can emit a flash-type light at 469 nm with a half-life around 0.5-1 s after the binding of calcium ions (Ca2+). …
How Regimes Shape Organized Crime: Mexico And Russia During Political Transitions, Yulia Vorobyeva
How Regimes Shape Organized Crime: Mexico And Russia During Political Transitions, Yulia Vorobyeva
Open Access Dissertations
The cases of Russia and Mexico, where deadly and violent organized crime erupted during transitions from authoritarian rule, suggest that political regimes may determine the type of organized crime in a society. This assertion runs counter to the common view of organized crime as a powerful corrosive force that undermines the vitality of democratizing regimes. Why did not democratization strengthen the rule of law in Mexico and Russia, two countries where concurrent processes of economic and political liberalization occurred in the last decade of the 20th century? Why did Russian organized crime become less violent and more controllable after Russia …
