Improved techniques for correcting text transcriptions of voice input is described herein. A computing device may perform speech recognition to transcribe voice input (e.g., speech) into text, enable a user to select any of one or more consecutive words in the text transcription, and, in response, determine and output a set of alternative hypotheses for the selected one or more consecutive words, so that the user may select one alternative hypothesis in the set of alternative hypotheses in order to replace the selected one or more consecutive words with the alternative hypothesis.

Korean Sibling Caregivers Of Individuals Diagnosed With Schizophrenia, Mijung Park, Kwang-Ja Lee
Asian/Pacific Island Nursing Journal
Siblings of individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia are an important source of family caregiving. Unfortunately, limited information is available about sibling caregivers because existing studies have focused on other family relationships such as parents, spouses, and children. To fill the knowledge gap, the purpose of this study is to describe Korean sibling caregivers’ experience with individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia.
Guided by Colaizzi’s descriptive phenomenological methodology, we conducted in-depth, semi-structured, face-to-face interviews with eight individuals who have a sibling (1) diagnosed with schizophrenia and (2) hospitalized in an inpatient psychiatric unit. We discerned six key themes: sorrow, burnout, shame, different perspectives in …

Minimal Restriping For Data Center Expansion, Shizhen Zhao
Minimal Restriping For Data Center Expansion, Shizhen Zhao
Defensive Publications Series
A system and a method are proposed to minimize restriping during data center expansion. Minimal restriping technique takes into account the old data center topology, and aims to minimize restriping between the new topology and the old topology. A low complexity minimal restriping algorithm proposed is used to minimize restriping. The topology solution is also guaranteed to have high network capacity, because it satisfies superblock ports, spineblock ports, and superblock-spineblock level balancedness constraints. The constraints may consider the number of links in original topology and the algorithm may determine the optimum new topology that minimizes restriping. The disclosed technique may not …
Ethical Issues In Digitization Of Cultural Heritage, Zinaida Manžuch
Ethical Issues In Digitization Of Cultural Heritage, Zinaida Manžuch
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
The growing number of case studies on the ethical issues faced in cultural heritage digitization calls for a discussion of this generally neglected dimension of digitization. The importance of the ethical dimension is also supported by implicit and explicit assumptions that well-established approaches to ethics in archives, libraries, and museums do not work with digitization. The aim of this paper is to determine what ethical issues arise in cultural heritage digitization and how they affect methods of decision-making and organizing digitization. The paper identifies and discusses several areas of concern that have caused ethical issues in digitization. They include contextual …
Our Digital Legacy: An Archival Perspective, Michael S. Moss, Tim J. Gollins
Our Digital Legacy: An Archival Perspective, Michael S. Moss, Tim J. Gollins
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
Our digital memories are threatened by archival hubris, technical misdirection, and simplistic application of rules to protect privacy rights. The obsession with the technical challenge of digital preservation has blinded much of the archival community to the challenges, created by the digital transition, to the other core principles of archival science - namely, appraisal (what to keep), sensitivity review (identifying material that cannot yet be disclosed for ethical or legal reasons) and access. The essay will draw on the considerations of appraisal and sensitivity review to project a vision of some aspects of access to the Digital Archive. This essay …
Ethics In The Cloud, Corinne Rogers, Luciana Duranti
Ethics In The Cloud, Corinne Rogers, Luciana Duranti
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
For the past several decades, information communication technologies (ICTs) have been changing the way we create, share, and keep our records and data. How are we adapting? Today, individuals and organizations are increasingly creating, sharing, and storing information of all kinds in the cloud, some of them with the same expectations of privacy, access, intellectual rights, and control they have when storing it in in-house systems, either digital or analog. Such expectations provoke outrage when it is discovered that behavior in the cloud is not guided by long-established ethical rules guiding information creation, sharing, and use, but needs to be …
Do Archives Have A Future In The Digital Age?, Ivan Szekely
Do Archives Have A Future In The Digital Age?, Ivan Szekely
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
The rapid development of information and communication technologies pose significant challenges to archival theory and practice. The analysis of the dominant information operators of the archival institutions in the respective paradigms of archival history shows that today’s internet-based services can replicate all the main functions of the archival institutions, at least at the level of the fundamental information operators, on a mass scale. Despite these developments, the author argues that archives are under no direct threat of abolition or loss of function in the digital age, not only because of institutional inertia and traditions, but also their role in preserving …
Virtual Reality Re-Centering, Chris Mckenzie
Virtual Reality Re-Centering, Chris Mckenzie
Defensive Publications Series
A virtual reality player often views a virtual reality scene of a virtual world while the player is located in a physical world via a head-mounted display. If the physical world is a virtual reality room, the scene can be re-centered within a known region, where stationary objects in the physical world (furniture, walls, etc.) may be accounted for via data such as maps or dimensions of the virtual reality room. However, in instances where the physical world is not a virtual reality room, such as a random standing space or a couch of a player’s house, a virtual reality …

Adaptive Screen Layouts Based On Viewer Proximity From Home Devices, Daniele Midi, William Schilit
Defensive Publications Series
Smart devices in the form of personal assistants are becoming more common and more dynamic. In addition to audibly exchanging information with a user via a mechanism such as a smart speaker, a personal assistant may now include a display to present useful ambient information to a user, such as time, weather, calendar information, or upcoming events. Techniques are described for adapting a screen layout of such a display based on proximity of a viewer relative to the display, allowing an effective and efficient presentation of the useful, ambient information.
Dynamic Slider Scaling, Michael Alger
Dynamic Slider Scaling, Michael Alger
Defensive Publications Series
Techniques are described that enable dynamic slider scaling. In a VR user interface with dynamic slider scaling, the slider control expands when the user selects the control. The expanded control offers better control to adjust the slider and may include additional information that is not available with conventional slider controls. When the user has completed the adjustment and releases the slider control, it reverts to its original size and shape to conserve space in the VR user interface.
Dynamic Notification Settings For New Or Unused Notification Types, Joseph Cohen, Justin Lewis
Dynamic Notification Settings For New Or Unused Notification Types, Joseph Cohen, Justin Lewis
Defensive Publications Series
A mechanism to provide notification settings to a user may be based on the interaction of the user at a content item service. For example, a likelihood of the user receiving particular notifications may be identified. The notifications may identify a particular content item at the content item service or a feature of the content item service. Settings for such notifications that have not been previously specified by the user may be identified. Subsequently, the notification settings may be provided to the user so that the user may enable or disable the receiving of future notifications that may be more …

Dynamic Notification Settings For New Or Unused Notification Types, Joseph Cohen, Justin Lewis
Defensive Publications Series
A mechanism for dynamically populating a user setting menu for notification settings is presented herein. The mechanism may present notification settings for new notification types and/or notification sources from which a user has not received a notification. The notification settings may be dynamically added to a user settings menu based on a user affinity score to a notification source and/or whether the notification type has been received by the user. Accordingly, the mechanism enables displaying notification settings to the user that the user is likely to receive in the future prior to the user actually receiving the notification. This may …
The Dark Side Of Social Media: The Case Of The Mexican Drug War, Nilda M. Garcia
The Dark Side Of Social Media: The Case Of The Mexican Drug War, Nilda M. Garcia
Open Access Dissertations
The rapid increase in the use of social media during the “war on drugs” in Mexico, especially in the first decades of the 21st century, has stimulated a growing research agenda in academia. To date, this scholarship has focused primarily on investigating the opportunities social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube offer to civilians as organizing mechanisms, to fill the informational vacuum left by the tightly selfcensured mainstream media outlets, and as a tool for survival. Yet, in Mexico, the use of these platforms has taken a darker, more sinister turn. Research exploring the use of social media …

Explaining Nba Success For Players With Varied College Experience, Cody Ashley
Sport Management Undergraduate
The purpose of this study was to compare early career National Basketball Association (NBA) success between college basketball players who have either one year of college experience or four years of experience. This research set out to uncover if there was a substantial difference in the early performance of these categories of players in terms of specific success metrics that were outlined. With the growing trend of players leaving college after just one season of play, it was important to understand how these athletes are performing at the next level, especially in comparison to their graduate counterparts. The results of …
