A Way Of Reflecting On Identity: The Five Stories Of The Conflicting Relationships In Nepal, Tomoki Yamanaka

Capstone Collection

Conflict studies show that the components of identity are interrelated to sources and dynamics of conflict in intricate ways. This study self-reflectively explores a way of reflecting on identity from the links between conflict and identity through a qualitative study of the five stories of the conflicting relationships in Nepal. By analyzing the stories collected through in-depth interviews with Nepali peace workers, an element of power in group differences was noted. This illustrated the challenge of having the voices of those being marginalized heard amongst conflicting issues around them. Those that were interviewed also struggled with the challenge of having …

Self-Esteem In Spanish-Speaking Latinos In Northwest Ohio, Mckenna Freeman Dec 2017

Self-Esteem In Spanish-Speaking Latinos In Northwest Ohio, Mckenna Freeman

Honors Projects

Self-esteem is a widely-studied construct across many disciplines of social science. However, previous research regarding self-esteem and language barriers has focused primarily on children and adolescent populations, while much less research has examined this relationship among adults. The current study measures linguistic acculturation and self-esteem in both Latino and control adult samples. Hypothesis 1 states that participants in the Latino sample would report significantly lower self-esteem than the control sample. Hypothesis 2 states that linguistic acculturation levels in Spanish speaking Latinos would be positively correlated with self-esteem. Finally, a research question was addressed measuring the differences in self-esteem between foreign …

Thermal Performance Prediction Of Plastics Ball Grid Array (Pbga) Using Artificial Neural Network, Leong C.H., Azid I.A., Seetharamu K.N.

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

Artificial Neural Network (ANN) based on feed-forward backpropagation model is used to predict junction temperature in PBG A package. The limited results obtained from FEM (using IDEAS software) are used to train the neural network. The effect of source power, substrate and mold compound thermal conductivity, die size, substrate thickness and air velocity on junction temperature and thermal resistance has been investigated using ANN. The predicted junction temperature using ANN agrees closely with the prediction from FEM. ANN method takes a small fraction of the time and effort compared to that required by HEM for prediction.

Expression And Role Of Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone 2 And Its Receptor In Mammals, Amy Desaulniers, Rebecca A. Cederberg, Clay A. Lents, Brett R. White Dec 2017

Expression And Role Of Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone 2 And Its Receptor In Mammals, Amy Desaulniers, Rebecca A. Cederberg, Clay A. Lents, Brett R. White

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Gonadotropin-releasing hormone 1 (GnRH1) and its receptor (GnRHR1) drive mammalian reproduction via regulation of the gonadotropins. Yet, a second form of GnRH (GnRH2) and its receptor (GnRHR2) also exist in mammals. GnRH2 has been completely conserved throughout 500 million years of evolution, signifying high selection pressure and a critical biological role. However, the GnRH2 gene is absent (e.g., rat) or inactivated (e.g., cow and sheep) in some species but retained in others (e.g., human, horse, and pig). Likewise, many species (e.g., human, chimpanzee, cow, and sheep) retain the GnRHR2 gene but lack the appropriate coding sequence to produce a full-length …

Learning To Ride: Developing An Assistive Device For Two Wheel Bicycling, Wilson S. Patton Dec 2017

Learning To Ride: Developing An Assistive Device For Two Wheel Bicycling, Wilson S. Patton

Theses

Learning to ride a two wheel bicycle is an unforgettable milestone of childhood development. It highlights a moment where the anxiety of learning a complex physical activity is overcome and replaced with a sense of confidence and empowerment. Cycling also provides a foundation for social participation and connectivity to the surrounding community and environment. However, some children have abilities that make learning how to ride a bicycle a different kind of challenge. This thesis project sets out to bridge the gap between children with upper limb differences and the standard geometries and reach affordances of typical children's two wheel bicycles. …

The first observation of a binary neutron star (NS) coalescence by the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo gravitational-wave (GW) detectors offers an unprecedented opportunity to study matter under the most extreme conditions. After such a merger, a compact remnant is left over whose nature depends primarily on the masses of the inspiraling objects and on the equation of state of nuclear matter. This could be either a black hole (BH) or an NS, with the latter being either long-lived or too massive for stability implying delayed collapse to a BH. Here, we present a search for GWs from the remnant …

Circumstellar Interaction Models For The Bolometric Light Curve Of Type I Superluminous Sn 2017egm, J. Craig Wheeler, Emmanouil Chatzopoulos, Jozsef Vinkó, Richard Tuminello

Faculty Publications

We explore simple semi-analytic fits to the bolometric light curve of Gaia17biu/SN 2017egm, the most nearby hydrogen-deficient superluminous supernova (SLSN I) yet discovered. SN 2017egm has a quasi-bolometric light curve that is uncharacteristic of other SLSN I by having a nearly linear rise to maximum and decline from peak, with a very sharp transition. Magnetar models have difficulty explaining the sharp peak and may tend to be too bright 20 days after maximum. Light curves powered only by radioactive decay of 56Ni fail on similar grounds and because they demand greater nickel mass than ejecta mass. Simple models based …

Everything I Thought I Was Supposed To Do, Jeff Conefry

Theses and Dissertations

It is within the liminal space between traditional mediums that my creative practice deconstructs the materiality of painting to subvert historical expectations. The irony associated with this deconstruction, excavates one medium to generate the building blocks for something inimitable. These blocks are most easily re-categorized into Words, Limits, and Power. It is these three themes that are the foundation of my thesis exhibition.

Nanostructured Apatite-Mullite Glass-Ceramics For Enhanced Primary Human Osteoblast Cell Response, Gordon Cooke, Conor Dunne, Sarah Keane, Daithi De Faoite, Seamas Donnelly, Kenneth Stanton

Articles

This work investigates the difference in viability of primary human foetal osteoblast cells on a glass-ceramic surface with nanoscale topography relative to viability on a smooth glass-ceramic surface containing a bioactive phase. Apatite-mullite glass-ceramics containing bioactive fluorapatite (Ca10(PO4)6F2) and bioinert mullite (Si2Al6O13) were synthesised and subsequent heat-treatment was optimised to form nano-sized fluorapatite crystals. Etching was used to selectively remove the bioactive phase, producing a surface with disordered nanoscale topography. Cells were seeded onto a smooth polished glass-ceramic substrate with the bioactive phase intact, an etched …

A Sensitive Assay For Non-Specific N-Methyltransferase Activity In Rat Tissues By High-Performance Liquid Chromatography Electrochemical Detection, Shimbhu Dawan, Kojima Kohichi, Nagatsu Toshiharu Dec 2017

A Sensitive Assay For Non-Specific N-Methyltransferase Activity In Rat Tissues By High-Performance Liquid Chromatography Electrochemical Detection, Shimbhu Dawan, Kojima Kohichi, Nagatsu Toshiharu

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

Phenylethanolamine N-methyltransferase (PNMT) and non-specific N -methyltransferase (EC 2.1.1.28) catalyze the N-methylation of aromatic amines. PNMT is specific for phenylethanolamines such as noradrenaline (NA). and catalyzes the step in catecholamine biosynthesis, forming adrenaline (AD) from NA. PNMT activity is high in adrenal gland, whereas non-specific N-methyltransferase is distributed in various tissues such as the lungs. Borchardt et al. first reported a method to detect PNMT activity by high-performance liquid chromatography electrochemical detection (HPLC-EICD), which could demonstrate the activity only in the adrenal medulla and hypothalamus. Recently, Troeewicz et al. reported a highly sensitive assay method for PNMT using HPLC-EICD by …

Mitigating Co Emissions From The Power Sector: Least-Cost Analysis Of Policy Options In Thailand, Limmeechokchai Bundit, Tanatvan Somporn, Shrestha Ram M.

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

Traditionally, the method used in the electricity generation expansion planning has concentrated only on the supply-side options to identify the sequence of generation additions meet the forecasted demand at a minimum cost. Electricity generation expansion planning with both supply- and demand-side options, commonly known as integrated resource planning are also being used in some developed countries. With growing environmental concerns, especially the emission of air-pollutants from the power generation, demand-side management and clean and efficient generation technology options in the power sector development are getting increasing attention. In this paper, we compare the traditional planning approach with integrated resource planning. …

Steady State Finite Element Analysis Of A Single Stack Cold Plate With Heat Losses, Quadir G. A., Bell Shiao Lin, Seetharamu K. N., Hassan A. Y.

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

Steady state analysis of a single stack cold plate used for the cooling of electronic components is carried out using the finite element method. The present methodology takes into account the heat losses from the top and bottom surfaces of the stack. In addition dimensionless parameters are used in the analysis. The analysis is divided into two parts: a single unit cell analysis and the analysis of the assembly of several unit cells. The results from the present analysis of a single unit cell for single stack cold plate without heat losses compare well with those available in the literature. …

There are over 2 million amputees in the United States and more than 90 percent of amputations done today are for lower limbs. While there are highly advanced options on the market today, there are still several areas of improvement. For instance, there are not many options that are completely waterproof, and the more advanced ones are extremely expensive and heavy. Our project idea is to create a below-the-knee prosthetic leg that is water resistant, affordable, and promotes comfort. The leg will be designed to disperse the loads and stresses over the whole structure using 3D printing and supporting metal …

Threading Mechanism For A Home Warp Knitting Machine, Daniel Martin, Samuel Fortmann, Andrew O'Sullivan Dec 2017

Threading Mechanism For A Home Warp Knitting Machine, Daniel Martin, Samuel Fortmann, Andrew O'Sullivan

Mechanical Engineering Design Project Class

A home warp knitting machine has a huge disadvantage compared to weft knitting in that it is very difficult to start up. Though it can provide better quality garments, each needle requires a thread to be individually loaded. If this problem could be mechanically solved, a home warp knitting machine would be feasible. Our machine should be able to spool out the appropriate amount of thread onto smaller spools which can then be loaded into the various needles. However it is able to do this, it should not take up more space than reasonably allocated by thread volume itself, and …
