A Palimpsest Of Diné Voices, Frances Vitali, Brian C. O'Connor Dec 2017

A Palimpsest Of Diné Voices, Frances Vitali, Brian C. O'Connor

Proceedings from the Document Academy

We use the idea of a palimpsest to probe and illuminate Hayse's model of communication as a dance - not simply the erasure of a single manuscript but the scraping away of the communication system of an entire people.

Among Navajo (Dine’), oral tradition and oral language still operates within mediated print and digital technologies as a complementarity. There is still a commitment to honoring whose voice is telling the stories in American Indian literature, for colonialist attitudes may still be coded with unchallenged stereotypes, cultural inaccuracies for readers.

Modeling the intersection of Diné culture and Anglo culture – both …

The Materiality Of Documents And The Genocidal Continuum, Martin I. Nord, D. Grant Campbell Dec 2017

The Materiality Of Documents And The Genocidal Continuum, Martin I. Nord, D. Grant Campbell

Proceedings from the Document Academy

This paper uses Nancy Scheper-Hughes’s concept of the “genocidal continuum” to examine the materiality of documents in the context of Canada’s historical treatment of indigenous peoples. We discuss Canada’s Report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, using a hermeneutic perspective inspired by Hans-Georg Gadamer, and argue that the Report’s status as a material document plays a complex role in Canada’s acknowledgement of its past treatment of indigenous cultures and its current efforts at reconciliation. Virtually all societies contain philosophical, religious, and social norms that implore us to be responsible, ethical, or loving to everyone, even the stranger. But in cases …

The Spider: Anaylsis Of An Automaton, Susannah N. Munson

Proceedings from the Document Academy

[Editors' note: This paper is the 2017 winner of the Student Paper Award in Document(ation) Studies, http://documentacademy.org/award. Susannah Munson wrote the paper as a Kent State University, School of Information, Museum Studies student.]

The physical objects that surround us document vast amounts of information about themselves, their histories, and their roles in broader social and cultural contexts. To reveal this sometimes hidden information, we examine these objects through analytical frameworks that go beyond descriptive accounts to explore how an object existed and was culturally understood throughout its history. Document phenomenology (Gorichanaz and Latham, 2016), conceived in two Acts, …

Evidence Based Protocol: Improving Nutrition Monitoring In Hospitalized Adults, Philip W. Jackson Dec 2017

Evidence Based Protocol: Improving Nutrition Monitoring In Hospitalized Adults, Philip W. Jackson

Master's Projects

Malnutrition affects a large number of adult inpatients. For these patients, the implications of the high rate of malnutrition include impaired wound healing, higher rates of infection, and an increased risk of death. These complications contribute to increased healthcare costs and longer lengths of stay. The level of monitoring and documentation of patients’ meal consumption was acknowledged to be below expectations in an acuity-adaptable neurosciences unit situated in a downtown hospital located in the Midwestern United States. The define-measure-analyze-improve-control (DMAIC) quality improvement framework guided the quality improvement team to develop a standard process for meal related activities. The rate of …

The Development And Use Of The Component Timed-Up-And-Go Test To Determine Basic Prosthetic Mobility In People With Lower Limb Amputation, Sheila Marie Clemens

Open Access Dissertations

Lower limb amputation (LLA) is a devastating event for an individual, often disrupting several aspects of life and, at least initially, upsetting the order of their daily routine. Lower limb amputation places a person at increased risk for secondary medical conditions, like joint degeneration and low back pain, related to use of a prosthesis. Additionally, an increased risk for falls may illicit loss of confidence, and have a detrimental effect on social interactions and quality of life (QoL). The use of outcome measures to assess whether applied interventions are effective can help to focus care and provide guidance to clinicians …

Study Of Selected Issues Of Solid-State Electrochemical Energy Storage, Yuchen Wang

Open Access Dissertations

The present dissertation focuses on three different topics of supercapacitor (SC) technology: 1) combination of galvanic cell components into SCs to mitigate the problem of self-discharge, 2) development of an all-solid-state SC/battery based on a superionic ceramic electrolyte and 3) mechanical-electrochemical study of a composite structural SC. A new hybrid supercapacitor SC with the galvanic cell materials is proposed to mitigate the self-discharge problem and to increase the storage-life. The galvanic cell components in the hybrid SC can provide a micro-current to compensate the self-discharge current. The hybrid SC was fabricated with active carbon electrodes, a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)/lithium trifluoromethanesulfonate …

Clinical factors and patient preferences are important for selecting oral anticoagulants for venous thromboembolism (VTE) and atrial fibrillation (AF). The relative association of sociodemographic factors with anticoagulant use is unknown. We evaluated a prospective cohort to compare sociodemographic variables in patients who continued on warfarin for AF or VTE to those who transitioned to 1 of the direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs). Adult patients, newly started on warfarin, were enrolled through 6 anticoagulation clinics across Michigan. Of 8468 patients, 53.3% had AF, 45.6% had VTE, and 1.1% had both. Of these, 696 (8.2%) switched from warfarin to a DOAC. There were …

Towards Rational Chemosensor Design Through Improved Understanding Of Experimental Parameter Variation And Tolerance In Cyclodextrin-Promoted Fluorescence Detection, Dana Discenza, Ella Culton, Molly Verderame, Julie Lynch, Nicole Serio, Mindy Levine

Chemistry Faculty Publications

We have previously developed a highly efficient fluorescence-based toxicant-detection method that operates in complex environments to detect aromatic toxicants and toxicant metabolites with high sensitivity and selectivity. This method relies on the ability of γ-cyclodextrin to act as a supramolecular scaffold, and uses a variety of non-covalent interactions between the cyclodextrin, toxicant, and fluorophore to enable efficient detection. Reported herein is an investigation of the effect of various experimental parameters, including host concentration, temperature, pH, salt, and solvent, on the observed energy-transfer efficiencies. These results advance our understanding of γ-cyclodextrin-based association complexes and provide crucial information for the development of …
