Patients recovering from orthopedic surgery experience reduced physical activity, increasing future risk for cardiometabolic disease and weight gain. A post-operative wellness consultation, with exercise and nutrition components, may modify the behavior of orthopedic patients to mitigate the detrimental effects of inactivity following surgery and the associated adverse health effects. PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy of a nutrition and exercise consultation on post-operative physical activity, serum metabolic markers, body composition, knee function, pain, and quality of life. This qualitative study used semi-structured interviews of five International Chinese Undergraduate (ICU) students attending a research university in South Florida to better understand how they experienced the college choice process. Unlike traditional U.S. native-born students, the literature indicates that some international students may have influencers linked to the financial costs associated with hiring educational agents in the college choice phases (Pimpa, 2003; Hossler & Gallagher, 1987), parental and familial aspirations for student, and institutional ranking information connected to marketing materials. Using thematic analysis, the following two major themes associated to four subthemes emerged as general findings from these analyses: 1) …

A Qualitative Examination Of The Listening Effort Experience Of Adults With Hearing Loss, Alison Marinelli

Increased effort and fatigue are common complaints of individuals with hearing loss, however the listening effort (LE) experience from the patient perspective is not well understood. Current models note the importance of cognitive factors in LE. Research, that is largely quantitative in nature, has shown equivocal findings regarding auditory signals that may cause increased LE, technologies that may ameliorate the LE experience, and the effects of LE on sensory systems. Very limited work has explored the personal aspects of LE. As a whole, however, investigations of LE fail to define the experience from the patient’s view or offer suggestions for …

Leading among arboviral disease morbidity and mortality is dengue fever with an estimated 390 million infections a year of which 96 million present clinical manifestations. In the Dominican Republic (DR), dengue fever is endemic where high incidence and outbreaks continue, with the most recent epidemic occurring in 2015. Failed prevention and control efforts have placed an onus on early diagnosis and treatment to aid in surveillance and help reduce dengue disease burden. This study explored dengue care, management and prevention perceptions among three main actors of the dengue diagnostic-management-surveillance scheme: patients, practitioners, and policy-makers. A Note On Mitigating The Adverse Scale Effects Associated With Daily Driving Restrictions, Arthur J. Caplan, Man-Keun Kim

This paper investigates the role of additional regulation in mitigating the “adverse scale effect” associated with daily driving restrictions, which has become a popular regulatory tool used to control episodic air pollution internationally, especially in developing countries. We find that although an annual vehicle registration tax reduces the incentive to purchase additional vehicles among households whose sole purpose for doing so is to “cheat” the restriction (i.e., the “adverse scale effect”), it does so with an external cost. The cost occurs because households whose purpose for purchasing an additional vehicle is not to cheat the restriction are given the same …

The displacement of over five million Syrian refugees in the past six years has brought much needed attention to issues of forced migration. Today, the majority of the world’s refugees and internally displaced reside in urban areas of middle to low-income states, particularly in Asia and Africa. There is, however, a significant gap in research on self-settled refugees in the Middle East and their integration into host countries. College preparedness is a widely researched topic within education. Previous research has found that an individual’s college readiness is primarily determined by the rigor of their high school academics, their involvement in extracurricular activities, and their knowledge of the higher educational system (Conley 2008; Glater 2016; Glennie et al. 2015; Holles 2016). The purpose of this project was to investigate whether or not Bridgewater State University students felt that these factors affected their individual preparedness for college. Personality is the configuration of thought, emotions and behaviors (Funder, 2013). Locke argues that job satisfaction is a positive state that derives from appraisal of a job experience (as cited in Ilies & Judge, 2004, p. 367). Job satisfaction has consistently been shown to affect productivity. The purpose of this study was to determine if employee judgements of managerial personality characteristics contribute to the overall satisfaction of the employee. Background: Maine Adaptive Sports and Recreation (MASR) relies on volunteers to instruct their participants with disabilities to participate in a variety of adaptive sport programs. Volunteers must have a comprehensive understanding of participants’ health conditions to assist appropriately. MASR’s traditional training program lacked a formal curriculum and assessment of volunteer learning. Our purpose was to create online learning modules and determine whether implementing a massed or distributed schedule resulted in better long term retention. © 2017 Author(s). We consider the erosion of particles (e.g. carbonblack agglomerates) advected by the polymeric flow in a single screw extruder. We assume a particle to be made of primary fragments bound together. In the erosion process a primary fragment breaks out of a given particle. Particles disperse because of the shear stresses imparted by the fluid. The time evolution of the numbers of particles of different sizes is described by the Bateman coupled differential equations developed a century ago to model radioactivity. Using the particle size distribution we compute an entropic fragmentation index which varies from 0 for …

Recent years have seen the rapid discovery of solids whose low-energy electrons have a massless, linear dispersion, such as Weyl, line-node, and Dirac semimetals. The remarkable optical properties predicted in these materials show their versatile potential for optoelectronic uses. However, little is known of their response in the picoseconds after absorbing a photon. Here, we measure the ultrafast dynamics of four materials that share non-trivial band structure topology but that differ chemically, structurally, and in their low-energy band structures: ZrSiS, which hosts a Dirac line node and Dirac points; TaAs and NbP, which are Weyl semimetals; and Sr1–y …
