Chickens infected with Mycoplasma gallisepticum, the primary etiologic agent of chronic respiratory disease (CRD), present with significant respiratory complications. The host response is often immunopathogenic and contributes to increased tracheal thickness due to the chemotaxis of leukocytes, cellular damage at the mucosal surface, and the inability to clear the infection. The response to M. gallisepticum is complex and the differences that lead to a maladaptive versus beneficial response are poorly understood. To elucidate the extent of the host response to virulent and attenuated strains, we conducted next-generation sequencing on samples taken directly from the host’s tracheal mucosa after infection …

Idaho State University’s Bengal Bridge is a summer program designed to help students successfully transition from high school to their first year of college at Idaho State University. All Bridge students at ISU take two general education courses, plus an additional credit of supplemental instruction focused on academic strategies specific to the disciplines represented by those general education courses, as well as a First Year Transition (ACAD) course to facilitate engagement with and acculturation to the university community—a total of nine to 10 credits in just seven weeks. Professors bemoan the great difficulty students have understanding the complexity of their disciplines or functional specializations. Many non-traditional students have work and family commitments that limit the time needed to reflect professionally and to master these concepts. This disconnect has persisted despite decades of work developing more integrated, interdisciplinary curricula. One potential, partial solution is to simply start sooner and partner with liberal arts courses to introduce business students to complexity and paradox before they arrive at the business school. Recent discussions of leadership paradoxes have suggested that managers who can hold seemingly opposed, yet interrelated perspectives, are more adaptive and effective. One such paradox that has received relatively little attention is the “Stockdale Paradox,” named after Admiral James Stockdale, an American naval officer who was held captive for seven and one-half years during the Vietnam War and survived imprisonment in large part because he held beliefs of optimism about the future, while simultaneously acknowledging the current reality of the desperate situation in which he found himself. Huntington’s disease (HD) is a debilitating neurodegenerative disorder with a complex pathophysiology. Despite extensive studies to study the disease, the sequence of events through which mutant Huntingtin (mHtt) protein executes its action still remains elusive. The phenotype of HD is an outcome of numerous processes initiated by the mHtt protein along with other proteins that act as either suppressors or enhancers of the effects of mHtt protein and PolyQ aggregates. Utilizing an integrative systems biology approach, I construct and analyze a Huntington’s disease integrome using human orthologs of protein interactors of wild type and mHtt protein. Animals can maximize fitness by optimizing energy acquisition through the selection of favorable foraging habitats, but trade-offs exist between time spent in preferred feeding habitats, energetic costs of travel, and reproductive constraints. For pelagic seabirds, geographic distribution of suitable breeding islands can restrict access to marine prey resources and influence foraging strategies. Laysan (Phoebastria immutabilis) and black-footed albatrosses (P. nigripes) breeding in the Northwest Hawaiian Islands, and Indian yellow-nosed albatrosses (Thalassarche carteri) breeding in the Southern Indian Ocean, utilize productive subtropical-subpolar transition zones during their breeding and non-breeding periods, but this marine feature is at a comparatively greater distance for …

Forced Upon The Account: Pirates And The Atlantic World In The Golden Age Of Piracy, 1690-1726, Nathan Ray

This thesis discusses an observed phenomenon of ordinary sailors being forced to serve on board pirate ships in the eighteenth century Atlantic World. The main argument is that when pirates lost their connections to land-based communities in the Caribbean at the end of the seventeenth century they attempted to establish the same connections to communities along the North American coast. Pirates in the early eighteenth century ultimately failed to establish lasting connections with colonies in the north and had to force more ordinary sailors to server on their crews in order to survive. BACKGROUND: Oral artemisinin monotherapy (AMT), an important contributor to multi-drug resistant malaria, has been banned in Nigeria. While oral AMT has scarcely been found for several years now in other malaria-endemic countries, availability has persisted in Nigeria's private sector. In 2015, the ACTwatch project conducted a nationally representative outlet survey. Results from the outlet survey show the extent to which oral AMT prevails in Nigeria's anti-malarial market, and provide key product information to guide strategies for removal.

RESULTS: Between August 10th and October 3rd, 2015 a total of 13,480 outlets were screened for availability of anti-malarials and/or malaria blood testing …

This project examined how advanced practice nurses (APNs) manage overweight and obesity in primary care. Not only were their general attitudes and beliefs toward overweight and obesity explored, but their beliefs about the treatment and management of obesity were also examined. The APNs’ knowledge and current practice with managing obesity in the primary care setting were evaluated. This project went on to examine the APNs’ awareness and utilization of clinical practice guidelines in managing overweight and obesity. It is estimated that by 2025, 49% of the female population and 39% of the male population, aged 15-39, will have contracted herpes simplex virus 2, or as it is more commonly known, genital herpes (Fisman, Lipsitch, Hook & Goldie, 2002). However, little is understood about the ways that those with genital herpes communicate their condition with potential partners, friends, or family members. Using in-depth qualitative interviews this research focuses on understanding the unique patterns that individuals with genital herpes engage to disclose their status to significant others. Many chemotherapeutic agents act in a nondiscriminatory fashion, targeting both cancerous and noncancerous cells in Sphase and Mphase. One approach to reduce the toxic side effects in normal tissue is to exploit the differences in p53 functionality between cancerous and noncancerous cells. For example, activating p53 signaling by nongenotoxic means can transiently arrest noncancerous p53 positive cells in G1 phase and protect them from the cytotoxic effects of chemotherapeutic drugs. However, since most cancerous cells have faulty p53 signaling, they will proceed to cycle, and continue to be affected by the drug. In this study we asked if this G1‐phase …

Given the current standards, pediatric post-operative pain management can be a distressing outcome to the patient and family. Adequate management of post-op pain in this population is a challenge despite the availability of evidence-based interventions combined to form care bundles. Tonsillectomies are common procedures in the pediatric population and often include moderate to severe pain with ineffective pain relief. Inadequate pain management leads to unplanned admissions, longer post anesthesia care unit (PACU) stays, slower oral intake, and longer recovery periods. Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS) is a quality measurement for standard of care used to rate a health plan or provider's ability to demonstrate clinical effectiveness. Medicare Advantage healthcare plan utilizes HEDIS as a guide for standard of care. Adherence to HEDIS is useful in decreasing chronic disease burden through preventative measures. Diabetes, a disease with high burden, has Comprehensive Diabetes Care HEDIS standards that specifically target providers. Increasing adherence to HEDIS measures is shown to significantly improve health outcomes when used with evidence-based guidelines. The literature shows having high HEDIS scores are not an incentive to adhere …

This project was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of education on nurse-to-nurse incivility and use of cognitive rehearsal techniques on registered nurses' perception of their ability to recognize and confront incivility, along with resulting job satisfaction. Nurse-to-nurse incivility negatively affects nurses, organizations and patients. The Tri-Council for Nursing's proclamation calls nurses to recognize incivility and take steps to eliminate this in practice ("Tri-Council" 2017). A mixed method, quality improvement pilot study was conducted. Participants, (registered nurses employed in a Post-Anesthesia Care Unit in a community hospital in Virginia), received education on incivility and cognitive rehearsal techniques. The American Nurses Association (ANA) recommends that at least fifty percent direct care providers are involved in staffing and scheduling decisions at the institutional level (ANA Staffing, 2015). This recommendation coincides with Magnet recommendations for the staff most impacted by staffing levels. Magnet organizations are recognized for superior nursing processes and quality patient care, which lead to the highest levels of safety, quality, and patient satisfaction (ANCC, 2015). Problem: Payers of health insurance are tracking key performance measures and are limiting payments to hospitals. With this threat to financial reimbursement hospital systems have increased emphasis on tracking and improving outcomes. The purpose of this project is to reduce all-cause 30-day readmissions and improve patient satisfaction scores in the care transitions domain after a total hip or total knee replacement by revising the discharge materials and education.

In response to stress, the yeast¹ and mammalian² cyclin C translocate from the nucleus to the cytoplasm, where it associates with the GTPase Drp1/Dnm1 to drive mitochondrial fragmentation and apoptosis. Therefore, the decision to release cyclin C represents a key life or death decision. In unstressed cells, the cyclin C‐Cdk8 kinase regulates transcription by associating with the Mediator of RNA polymerase II. We previously reported that the Mediator component Med13 anchors cyclin C in the nucleus³. Loss of Med13 function leads to constitutive cytoplasmic localization of cyclin C, resulting in fragmented mitochondria, hypersensitivity to stress and …
