Organizational information system users (OISUs) that are open to cyber threats vectors are contributing to major financial and information losses for individuals, businesses, and governments. Moreover, technical cybersecurity controls may be rendered useless due to a lack of cybersecurity competency of OISUs. The main goal of this research study was to propose and validate, using subject matter experts (SMEs), a reliable hands-on assessment prototype tool for measuring the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) that comprise the cybersecurity competency of an OISU. This study contrasts the social media risk perceptions of undergraduate students, versus those of certified Human Resource professionals. Social media is widely used by most segments of the population, and particularly among the age group that includes most undergraduate students. Organizations hiring employees are increasingly examining job applicant's social media postings as part of the applicant screening process. In this study we examine how these groups differ in their perceptions of the risks inherent in using social media, and what these differences may mean for students seeking employment. Recommendations are made for raising undergraduate student awareness of these risks.

Upper bounds on the secret-key-agreement capacity of a quantum channel serve as a way to assess the performance of practical quantum-key-distribution protocols conducted over that channel. In particular, if a protocol employs a quantum repeater, achieving secret-key rates exceeding these upper bounds is evidence of having a working quantum repeater. In this paper, we extend a recent advance [Liuzzo-Scorpo, Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 120503 (2017)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.119.120503] in the theory of the teleportation simulation of single-mode phase-insensitive Gaussian channels such that it now applies to the relative entropy of entanglement measure. By using magnetization and small-angle neutron scattering measurements, we have investigated the magnetic behavior of the Mn1-xIrxSi system to explore the effect of increased carrier density and spin-orbit interaction on the magnetic properties of MnSi. We determine estimates of the spin wave stiffness and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction strength and compare with Mn1-xCoxSi and Mn1-xFexSi. Despite the large differences in atomic mass and size of the substituted elements, Mn1-xCoxSi and Mn1-xIrxSi show nearly identical variations in their magnetic properties with substitution. We find a systematic dependence of the transition temperature, the ordered moment, the helix period, and the DM interaction …

The human pathogen L. monocytogenes and the animal pathogen L. ivanovii, together with four other species isolated from symptom-free animals, form the "Listeria sensu stricto" clade. The members of the second clade, "Listeria sensu lato", are believed to be solely environmental bacteria without the ability to colonize mammalian hosts. To identify novel determinants that contribute to infection by L. monocytogenes, the causative agent of the foodborne disease listeriosis, we performed a genome comparison of the two clades and found 151 candidate genes that are conserved in the Listeria sensu stricto species. There has been a noted shortage in skilled labor throughout the construction industry. This shortage has been attributed by some professional organizations to generational differences in the workforce participants. Leading some to suggest that younger generations exhibit character flaws such as laziness at a higher rate than that of older generations. It is the position of this author that this conclusion is flawed. The decrease in vocational training in public schools and the societal preference for America’s youth to attend college rather than learn a skilled trade must be considered primary drivers of this trend. Film, drama, and novels are each capable of telling stories in a specialized way. This thesis makes the claim that video games are the newest means of storytelling and that they can tell stories in unique and engaging ways by using choice. The first goal of this thesis is to determine how and why choice is being used by game developers by examining several modern narrative games. One-third of all food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted globally. In North America and Europe, 280-300 kg of food is wasted per capita each year, with more than 40% of the losses occurring at the retail and consumer level. In this paper, I compare the amount of food wasted in the United States to the amounts wasted by different societies around the world, and discuss the reasons for the food waste, and the consequences that the waste has on our society, in terms of resource consumption and production of pollution. In eukaryotes, DNA repair mechanisms detect and repair damaged DNA. DNA damage is primarily caused by a variety of exogenous and endogenous sources. Several types of damage to DNA are repaired by different kinds of DNA repair pathways. This dissertation focused on repair of N-methylpurines (NMPs) and double-strand breaks (DSBs) in human fibroblasts.

NMPs, including N⁷-methylguanine (7MeG) and N³-methyladenine (3MeA), can be induced by environmental methylating agents (e.g. the soil fumigant methyl bromide), chemotherapeutics (e.g. nitrogen mustards), and natural cellular methyl donors like S-adenosylmethionine. A plethora of evidence supports the use of statin therapy for primary and secondary prevention of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), yet residual risk among high-risk patients receiving statin therapy remains high. Moreover, statin-associated muscle symptoms and other statin-associated adverse effects (e.g., increased risk of diabetes mellitus) limit the use of statins in high-risk patient populations. Of particular concern are individuals with established ASCVD, familial hypercholesterolemia (FH), or diabetes mellitus plus multiple ASCVD risk factors, all of whom require high-intensity statins, which are more commonly associated with an increased risk of adverse effects.
