Dynamic Light Trail Construction In Wavelength Division Multiplexing (Wdm) Optical Networks, Betty Elizabeth Amuge Jan 2017

Dynamic Light Trail Construction In Wavelength Division Multiplexing (Wdm) Optical Networks, Betty Elizabeth Amuge

Computer Science

This paper addresses dynamic light trail construction issues in a WDM optical network. This construction was done with an objective to consume a minimum number of resources, such as, the number of free wavelengths, while ensuring that the light trails were always available and had backups especially in cases of failure. A simulation study had been carried out in a previous study in 2010 (27), and this paper took it further by implementing the proposed dynamic light trail routing algorithms using the Java language as well as running additional simulations. The paper then presented numerical results that compared and evaluated …

Using Learning Styles To Improve Software Requirements Quality: An Empirical Investigation, Anurag Goswami Jan 2017

Using Learning Styles To Improve Software Requirements Quality: An Empirical Investigation, Anurag Goswami

Computer Science

The success of a software organization depends upon its ability to deliver a quality software product within time and budget constraints. To ensure the delivery of quality software, software inspections have proven to be an effective method that aid developers to detect and remove problems from artifacts during the early stages of software lifecycle. In spite of the reported benefits of inspection, the effectiveness of the inspection process is highly dependent on the varying ability of individual inspectors. Software engineering research focused at understanding the factors (e.g., education level, experience) that can positively impact the individual’s and team inspection effectiveness …

Using Message Queuing To Drive Polyglot Identity And Access Management Development, Richard Ernest Orvin Frovarp

Computer Science

This paper describes a method of using an Advanced Message Queuing Protocol (AMQP) broker, RabbitMQ in particular, to facilitate the management of accounts across a variety of systems. Higher education poses a unique challenge in the management of accounts due to the wide variety of systems involved. The Central IT department of an organization, those that usually run management systems, does not always have control over what systems are chosen, but needs to be able to manage them nonetheless. Unique requirements of each of the systems requires custom integration. That integration can be limited in what platform or languages are …

Context Specific Module Mining From Multiple Co-Expression Graph, Md Shakhawat Hossain Jan 2017

Context Specific Module Mining From Multiple Co-Expression Graph, Md Shakhawat Hossain

Computer Science

Gene co-expression networks can be used to associate genes of unknown function with biological processes or to find genes in a specific context, environment responsible for a disease. We provide an overview of methods and tools used to identify such recurrent patterns across multiple networks, can be used to discover biological modules in co-expression networks constructed from gene expression data and we explain how this can be used to identify genes with a regulatory role in disease. However, existing algorithms are very much costly in terms of time and space. As network size or number increases, mining such modules get …

Genetic algorithm is applied with crossover and mutation to evolve the layout of the patches. On the other hand, evolutionary strategy is also evaluated. We have conducted a series of runs, resulting in visually comparing …

Emerging Public: The Public Library's Role In Building Community, Nicholas Braaksma Jan 2017

Emerging Public: The Public Library's Role In Building Community, Nicholas Braaksma

Architecture Theses

How can architecture create context and facilitate understanding of the information presented in public libraries through both physical and digital media to encourage community engagement? This thesis analyzes the architectural relationship between the public, information, and the city. Historically, library buildings have acted as the interface through which the public accessed information. As the way we access information has changed, libraries have changed as well. The proliferation of easy and remote access to information can lead to the assumption that libraries, as portals to information, are obsolete. However, information that is less exclusive is also less edited, driving the amount …

Mollusks are known to be uniquely sensitive to a number of reproductive toxicants including some vertebrate endocrine disrupting chemicals. However, they have widely been ignored in environmental risk assessment procedures for chemicals. This study describes the validation of the Potamopyrgus antipodarum reproduction test within the OECD Conceptual Framework for Endocrine Disrupters Testing and Assessment. The number of embryos in the brood pouch and adult mortality serve as main endpoints. The experiments are conducted as static systems in beakers filled with artificial medium, which is aerated trough glass pipettes. The test chemical is dispersed into the medium, and adult snails are …

Realising The Full Potential Of Primary Care: Uniting The ‘Two Faces’ Of Generalism, Joanne Reeve, Richard Byng Jan 2017

Realising The Full Potential Of Primary Care: Uniting The ‘Two Faces’ Of Generalism, Joanne Reeve, Richard Byng

Peninsula Medical School

Faced with an unprecedented mismatch between presented health needs and resources available, we must rethink both how we deliver healthcare and what care we deliver. Work has already started on the ‘how’: notably with efforts to strengthen access and integration — improved coordination of the comprehensive care needed to meet a diverse range of needs.2 It is defining ‘what’ to deliver that is proving more challenging. To address emerging problems of over- and under-treatment associated with the undue specialisation of healthcare,3 we need to strengthen delivery of generalist medical care.4 This means that we need to bolster the capacity to …

Echo: Elemental Architecture As A Method Of Cleansing Freshwater In The Wake Of Industrialization, Kara Iliff Jan 2017

Echo: Elemental Architecture As A Method Of Cleansing Freshwater In The Wake Of Industrialization, Kara Iliff

Architecture Theses

Existing as a force powerful enough to shape the face of the earth, yet delicate enough to sustain the life within our bodies, water is an element with which humans have continuously sought balance. Water has eternally been a source of repetitive daily ritual: collection, hydration, and cleansing. Out of necessity and convenience, our cities have been built right up against shorelines and grown inland. With the rise of industrial architecture, the ruination of our irreplaceable resources is the fatal flaw of our technological advances. Duluth, Minnesota is a shoreline city born from the lure of Lake Superior’s freshwater and …

Identity Theory And The Lunar Chronicles: Expanding The Study Of Identity In Young Adult Literature, Sarah Rose Silvernail Jan 2017

Identity Theory And The Lunar Chronicles: Expanding The Study Of Identity In Young Adult Literature, Sarah Rose Silvernail

English

This Master’s Thesis applies Identity Theory from Social Psychology to The Lunar Chronicles, a young adult novel series by Marissa Meyer. In this thesis, I explain the theory in detail, apply it to the text, and discuss what can be gained by applying such a theory to young adult literature. Young adult literature (YAL) works with the concept of identity, and applying a Social Psychological theory of identity to YAL can provide a new vantage point from which to examine the concept of identity as portrayed in YAL. Through my application of Identity Theory to the texts, I demonstrate how …
