The Canadian War Museum supports developmental research. This article is a by-product of the author’s continuing research into Canadian casualty records of the Korean War. This research helps to create a better picture of the makeup of the Canadian Army Special Force in Korea. When completed, it will shed greater light on when, where, and under what circumstances the 516 Canadians who are listed in the Korean War Book of Remembrance died. Xenopus laevis embryonic development requires the selective localization of maternal RNAs to the animal or vegetal pole. These RNAs include somatic and germline determinants, essential in establishing the embryo’s body plan. Such determinants are involved in primary germ layer formation and organization, dorsal/ventral axis specification, anterior/posterior axis specification, and germline development. In Xenopus laevis, germline development requires maternally inherited germplasm, a vegetally localized material that both specifies and protects primordial germ cells (PGCs) from adopting somatic fates throughout embryogenesis. The germline is unique in its ability to maintain heritable genetic material for many metazoans, including humans. It is, therefore, of …

The pink shrimp Farfantepenaeus duorarum is one ecological indicator of the Biscayne Bay Coastal Wetlands (BBCW) project, which intends to increase mesohaline and oligohaline areal extent along southwestern Biscayne Bay nearshore areas. These changes were anticipated to benefit pink shrimp abundances. My dissertation tested whether increased mesohaline and oligohaline area within a 50-m strip of shallow-water shoreline area likely would increase pink shrimp densities. First, I carried out a comprehensive literature review that revealed polyhaline and/or euhaline salinity regimes generally maximized pink shrimp occurrence, abundance, growth, and survival. Does Being An Expert Make You More Negative? An Investigation Of Subjective Expertise And Electronic Word-Of-Mouth Communication, Jiangmeng Liu

This dissertation is aimed at filling a gap in electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) literature by examining how communicator’s subjective expertise impacts generation of eWOM. Based on a review of literature in psychology, marketing, consumer research, and communication, four underlying mechanisms (sense of power, dogmatic cognition style, hubristic pride, and emotions) were proposed to explain the effect of subjective expertise. Two distinctive features of eWOM platforms were incorporated into the study as potential moderators: anonymity and audience size of the review platform. Piano and drumset both play important roles in jazz music. The main similarities between these instruments are that they are both classified as percussion instruments. The purpose of this study is to investigate how typical technical approaches on the drumset can be used to help jazz pianists improve their overall rhythmic concept and understanding of complex rhythms, as well as their two hand coordination in order to facilitate their solo piano skills. Deciphering The Evolution Of The New Providence Platform, Bahamas, Using 2d Gpr Data And Core Correlation, Emad H. Alothman

The sedimentology and stratigraphy of New Providence Island, Bahamas, was analyzed using ground penetrating radar (GPR) and core correlation. The shallow Pleistocene carbonates that form New Providence Island were deposited during a series of sea level highstands. This study focuses on the internal architecture and distribution of the deposits from the last interglacial sea level highstand (MIS 5e). Ground penetrating radar (GPR) is used to image the geometries of the MIS 5e strata that are separated from the underlying MIS 9 strata by an unconformity. One of the fundamental concepts in computational geometry is deducing the combinatorial structure, or interactions, of a group of static geometric objects. In two dimensions, the objects in question include, but are not limited to: points, lines, line segments, polygons, and non-linear curves. There are various properties of interest describing a collection of such objects; examples include: distances, adjacencies, and most notably, intersections of these objects. Well studied, robust, and highly efficient algorithms exist for linear geometry and parametric curves. Mitochondrial dysfunction is thought to play a significant role in neurodegeneration observed in Parkinson’s disease (PD), yet the mechanisms underlying this pathology remain unclear. Here, we demonstrate that loss of mitoNEET (CISD1), an iron–sulfur containing protein that regulates mitochondrial bioenergetics, results in mitochondrial dysfunction and loss of striatal dopamine and tyrosine hydroxylase. Mitochondria isolated from mice lacking mitoNEET were dysfunctional as revealed by elevated reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reduced capacity to produce ATP. Gait analysis revealed a shortened stride length and decreased rotarod performance in knockout mice, consistent with the loss of striatal dopamine. Together, these data suggest that …

Trade In Environmental Goods: Empirical Exploration Of Direct And Indirect Effects On Pollution By Country’S Trade Status, Natalia Zugravu-Soilita

Based on panel data covering 114 countries in the world, this study investigates the direct, indirect and total effects of trade flows in environmental goods (EG) on total CO2 and SO2 emissions. Our system-GMM estimations reveal positive direct scale – [between-industry] composition effects prevailing on the negative direct technique – [within-industry] composition effects (if any), as well as compensating the significant indirect technique effects channelled by the stringency of environmental regulations and per capita income. Subaru And Salt Spectroscopy Of Chemically Peculiar Hot Subdwarfs, C. Simon Jeffery, Naslim Neelamkodan, Vincent M. Woolf, Steven M. Crawford, Roy H. Østensen

The majority of hot subdwarfs lie on or close to the helium main-sequence. Many have hydrogen-rich surfaces, but a substantial fraction of the hotter subdwarfs have hydrogen-depleted or hydrogen-deficient surfaces. Amongst the former, three were known to show extraordinary overabundances of heavy elements including zirconium and lead. Using Subaru/HDS,we commenced a high-resolution survey of hydrogen-depleted subdwarfs to discover new members of the class. UVO 0825+15, was found to exhibit strong lead lines, to be an intrinsic variable in K2 field 5, and to have a relatively high space motion. Two other lead-rich subdwarfs have been found in the Subaru sample. …

The Leading Economic Indicator – Nebraska (LEI-N) 1 rose by 0.64% during November of 2017. The increase in the LEI-N, which is designed to predict economic activity six months into the future, suggests that Nebraska economic growth will continue through the second quarter of 2018. The increase in the indicator was due to an increase in building permits for single-family homes. There also were positive business expectations during the month. In particular, respondents to the November Survey of Nebraska Business reported plans to increase sales and employment in the coming months. In terms of negative components, there was a rise …
