Characterization Of Arthropod Assemblages Attracted To Canine Feces Using Pitfall Traps And Rearing Experiments, Jennifer Albrecht

Department of Entomology: Distance Master of Science Projects

The decomposition of fecal matter is critical for an ecosystem, turning matter into a form that is usable by other organisms; the removal of feces also eliminates breeding sites for pests and prevents waste from entering waterways. The aim of this study was to survey arthropod populations that are attracted to dog feces in suburban and residential settings. Due to their established role in nutrient recycling, an emphasis was placed on identifying dung beetle species present. Monitoring was conducted in Lancaster County, Nebraska from July to September 2017 using pitfall traps and rearing experiments. It was hypothesized that southeast Nebraska …

Determination Of Stellar Parameters Through The Use Of All Available Flux Data And Model Spectral Energy Distributions, Gemunu Ekanayake Jan 2017

Determination Of Stellar Parameters Through The Use Of All Available Flux Data And Model Spectral Energy Distributions, Gemunu Ekanayake

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy

Basic stellar atmospheric parameters, such as effective temperature, surface gravity, and metallicity plays a vital role in the characterization of various stellar populations in the Milky Way. The Stellar parameters can be measured by adopting one or more observational techniques, such as spectroscopy, photometry, interferometry, etc. Finding new and innovative ways to combine these observational data to derive reliable stellar parameters and to use them to characterize some of the stellar populations in our galaxy is the main goal of this thesis.

Our initial work, based on the spectroscopic and photometric data available in literature, had the objective of calibrating …

Thermal Conductivities Of Organic Semiconductors, Yulong Yao Jan 2017

Thermal Conductivities Of Organic Semiconductors, Yulong Yao

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy

Organic semiconductors have gained a lot of interest due to their ease of processing, low-cost and inherent mechanical flexibility. Although most of the research has been on their electronic and optical properties, knowledge of the thermal properties is important in the design of electronic devices as well. Our group has used ac-calorimetric techniques to measure both in-plane and transverse thermal conductivities of a variety of organic semiconductors including small-molecule crystals and polymer blends. For layered crystals composed of molecules with planar backbones and silylethynyl (or germylethynyl) sidegroups projecting between the layers, very high interplanar thermal conductivities have been observed, presumably …

Disconnected-Sea Quarks Contribution To Nucleon Electromagnetic Form Factors, Raza Sabbir Sufian Jan 2017

Disconnected-Sea Quarks Contribution To Nucleon Electromagnetic Form Factors, Raza Sabbir Sufian

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy

We present comprehensive analysis of the light and strange disconnected-sea quarks contribution to the nucleon electric and magnetic form factors. The lattice QCD estimates of strange quark magnetic moment GsM (0) = −0.064(14)(09) μN and the mean squared charge radius ⟨r2s⟩E = −0.0043(16)(14) fm2 are more precise than any existing experimental measurements and other lattice calculations. The lattice QCD calculation includes ensembles across several lattice volumes and lattice spacings with one of the ensembles at the physical pion mass. We have performed a simultaneous chiral, infinite volume, and continuum extrapolation in …

Autonomous Driving With A Simulation Trained Convolutional Neural Network, Cameron Franke Jan 2017

Autonomous Driving With A Simulation Trained Convolutional Neural Network, Cameron Franke

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Autonomous vehicles will help society if they can easily support a broad range of driving environments, conditions, and vehicles.

Achieving this requires reducing the complexity of the algorithmic system, easing the collection of training data, and verifying operation using real-world experiments. Our work addresses these issues by utilizing a reflexive neural network that translates images into steering and throttle commands. This network is trained using simulation data from Grand Theft Auto V~\cite{gtav}, which we augment to reduce the number of simulation hours driven. We then validate our work using a RC car system through numerous tests. Our system successfully drive …

Using A Mixed-Methods Approach To Understand Urban Children's Nature Conceptions, Ecological Worldviews And Environmental Perceptions And Preferences Before And After Attending An Environmental Education Program, Alejandra Maria Bozzolasco

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

The main objective of this dissertation is to utilize multiple instruments to measure urban children’s nature conceptions, ecological worldviews, and environmental perceptions and preferences, and to determine whether they are impacted by an environmental education (EE) intervention. This information is critical today in light of growing urbanization that is considered a contributor to nature deficit disorder (NDD) in which children, particularly urban children, are growing up distanced from the natural world, thereby impacting children’s development, public health, and the environment. Urban children from northern New Jersey who attended the New Jersey School of Conservation’s (NJSOC) EE program participated in this …

Navigating Human Cytomegalovirus (Hcmv) Envelopment And Egress, William Longeway Close Jan 2017

Navigating Human Cytomegalovirus (Hcmv) Envelopment And Egress, William Longeway Close

Wayne State University Dissertations

Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is a ubiquitous viral pathogen. In individuals with fully functioning and mature immune systems, HCMV is associated with mild symptoms prior to establishing latency. In individuals with naïve or compromised immune systems, HCMV is capable of causing severe organ damage. HCMV is the leading infectious cause of congenital birth defects and a major non-genetic cause of hearing loss. Unfortunately, antiviral treatment options lack diversity due to limited knowledge of virion replication. If HCMV replication were better understood, new antiviral treatments could be developed.

In this work, we describe the development and implementation of new tools to study …

Expression, Purification And Characterization Of Lysine Methyltransferase Smyd5, Wen Xue Jan 2017

Expression, Purification And Characterization Of Lysine Methyltransferase Smyd5, Wen Xue

Wayne State University Theses

Methylation of histones and non-histone proteins play vital roles in numerous cellular processes including gene expression regulation and DNA damage response. The identifications of methyltransferase SMYD protein family are not well characterized. SMYD5 is a unique and critical member of SMYD family involved in immune response, stem cell renew, hematopoiesis regulation and cancer metastasis. Understanding its function and structure is monumental to human disease. With the achievement of SMYD5 expression and purification, the association between SMYD5 and its substrate histone H4 has been investigated. While possessing a poly-E tail instead of the TPR domain included in other members, SMYD5 is …

Ethical And Political Implications Of Reflective Practice Among Preservice Teachers, Jeffrey Labelle Jan 2017

Ethical And Political Implications Of Reflective Practice Among Preservice Teachers, Jeffrey Labelle

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

This study investigates the ethical and political implications of reflective practice among preservice teachers. The author reviewed previous research which suggests the need for a more critical analysis of teacher education programs to implement more intensive reflective methodologies that foster authentic, caring, dispositional development as a moral obligation toward socially just practice rather than mere audited compliance with standards-based technical training. This position paper then analyzes preservice teacher education as an interdependent process of methodological development, perceptive development, and cognitive/affective development. Finally, the author makes recommendations for program modification to better prepare preservice teachers to conceptualize their transformative role in …

Methods

A mixed method of quasi-experimental, non-randomized pre-test/post-test and semi-structured interview design was used, which utilized a convenience sampling approach. Data were collected in two phases. Three domains of …

Detecting Broken Pointcuts Using Structural Commonality And Degree Of Interest, Raffi Khatchadourian, Awais Rashid, Hidehiko Masuhara, Takuya Watanabe Jan 2017

Detecting Broken Pointcuts Using Structural Commonality And Degree Of Interest, Raffi Khatchadourian, Awais Rashid, Hidehiko Masuhara, Takuya Watanabe

Publications and Research

Pointcut fragility is a well-documented problem in Aspect-Oriented Programming; changes to the base-code can lead to join points incorrectly falling in or out of the scope of pointcuts. Deciding which pointcuts have broken due to base-code changes is a daunting venture, especially in large and complex systems. We present an automated approach that recommends pointcuts that are likely to require modification due to a particular base-code change, as well as ones that do not. Our hypothesis is that join points selected by a pointcut exhibit common structural characteristics. Patterns describing such commonality are used to recommend pointcuts that have potentially …

“There Is Nothing Inherently Mysterious About Assistive Technology”: A Qualitative Study About Blind User Experiences In Us Academic Libraries, Adina Mulliken Jan 2017

“There Is Nothing Inherently Mysterious About Assistive Technology”: A Qualitative Study About Blind User Experiences In Us Academic Libraries, Adina Mulliken

Publications and Research

Eighteen academic library users who are blind were interviewed about their experiences with academic libraries and the libraries’ websites using an open-ended questionnaire and recorded telephone interviews. The study approaches these topics from a user-centered perspective, with the idea that blind users themselves can provide particularly reliable insights into the issues and potential solutions that are most critical to them. Most participants used reference librarians’ assistance, and most had positive experiences. High-level screen reader users requested help with specific needs. A larger number of participants reported contacting a librarian because of feeling overwhelmed by the library website. In some cases, …

The Social Origins Of Innovation Failures, Laura Pedraza-Farina Jan 2017

The Social Origins Of Innovation Failures, Laura Pedraza-Farina

SMU Law Review

This Article identifies and describes a crucial source of innovation failure— linked not to the market but to the structure of social relations that underlie market transactions—that this Article terms social network innovation failures. This source of innovation failure, however, has been obscured by two assumptions in traditional market failure models of innovation. First, market failure models frequently assume that public, non-secret knowledge (or information) will flow freely among communities of innovators and be put to its optimal use. Second, market failure models pay little attention to how good ideas emerge, assuming that good ideas will follow from investment in …

Dynamical Systems Modeling To Identify A Cohort Of Problem Drinkers With Similar Mechanisms Of Behavior Change, Kidist Maxwell, Rebecca Everett, Sijing Shao, Alexis Kuerbis, Lyric Stephenson, H. T. Banks, Jon Morgenstern

Publications and Research

One challenge to understanding mechanisms of behavior change (MOBC) completely among individuals with alcohol use disorder is that processes of change are theorized to be complex, dynamic (time varying), and at times non-linear, and they interact with each other to influence alcohol consumption. We used dynamical systems modeling to better understand MOBC within a cohort of problem drinkers undergoing treatment. We fit a mathematical model to ecological momentary assessment data from individual patients who successfully reduced their drinking by the end of the treatment. The model solutions agreed with the trend of the data reasonably well, suggesting the cohort patients …
