Whiter Shade Of Pale: Making The Case For Jewish Presence In The Multicultural Classroom, Daniel Ian Rubin Jan 2017

Whiter Shade Of Pale: Making The Case For Jewish Presence In The Multicultural Classroom, Daniel Ian Rubin

Research, Publications & Creative Work

Despite over 4,000 years of persecution, American Jews and antisemitism continue to be overlooked in university multicultural and social justice classroom discussions. This is due to many factors, such as the misconceptions that Jews are solely a religious group, are White and have completely assimilated into American culture, and are economically successful. Jews are a distinctive group in the United States who continue to experience racism and oppression. In order to validate the racism and discrimination of Jews in the United States, university multicultural and social justice programs must begin to discuss the issues pertaining to antisemitism.

Light Soaking Phenomena In Organic-Inorganic Mixed Halide Perovskite Single Crystals, Hye Ryung Byun, Dae Young Park, Hye Min Oh, Gon Namkoong, Mun Seok Jeong

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Recently, organic inorganic mixed halide perovskite (MAPbX3; MA = CH3NH3+, X = Cl-, Br-, or I-) single crystals with low defect densities have been highlighted as candidate materials for high-efficiency photovoltaics and optoelectronics. Here we report the optical and structural investigations of mixed halide perovskite (MAPbBr3-xIx) single crystals. Mixed halide perovskite single crystals showed strong light soaking phenomena with light illumination conditions that were correlated to the trapping and detrapping events from defect sites. By systematic investigation with optical analysis, we found that the …

Knowledge Of Polymath Walks, Talks, Makes Waves, Turns Into Deeds, Hamlet Isaxanli, Waqas Ahmed Jan 2017

Knowledge Of Polymath Walks, Talks, Makes Waves, Turns Into Deeds, Hamlet Isaxanli, Waqas Ahmed

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

In this interview, Hamlet Isaxanli shares his opinion on polymathy. What makes a polymath? Isaxanli stresses the importance of two factors: a person’s nature may lead him/her to an insatiable thirst for knowledge and the desire to explore different fields simultaneously. On the other hand, the education system encourages polymathy from the perspective of the richness and diversity of the high school curriculum. Isaxanli also goes into the relationship between math and poetry as well as the art-science-humanities connections. He then calls attention to Omar Khayyam, Nasr al-Din Tusi and some polymaths of the 20th century. Finally yet importantly, Isaxanli …

Death Spiral Convertible Bonds, Austin Dwyer Jan 2017

Death Spiral Convertible Bonds, Austin Dwyer

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Death spiral convertibles, are a type of loan lenders give to a firm in exchange for a right to convert into equity at below market prices. This differs from traditional convertibles because there is no fixed conversion price. Instead, the price can be reset lower if the firm's stock price falls below the conversion price at the time of issuance. As the process repeats itself the stock's price spirals downwards. This process benefits the bondholders at the cost of the shareholders. Based on a hand collected sample of 23 companies issuing a total of I 97 floating price convertibles, the …

An International Analysis Of Csr Rankings And A Country's Culture, Victoria Fisher Jan 2017

An International Analysis Of Csr Rankings And A Country's Culture, Victoria Fisher

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

As globalization has increased, so too has the number of companies practicing corporate social responsibility (CSR) around the world. Social and environmental issues like global warming has been an underlying factor in this growing importance (Peng, 2012). Increasingly, companies are communicating their activities through CSR reports that outline corporate initiatives to access and take responsibility for the company's effects on the global environment and impact on social welfare. In this paper, we will expand on previous results found in "A Study of a How CSR Rankings Are Affected in a Globalized Economy", which is published in McNair Scholars Research Journal, …

Athletic Ticket Pricing In The Collegiate Environment: An Agenda For Research, Craig A. Morehead, Stephen Shapiro, Timothy M. Madden, Lamar Reams, Chad D. Mcevoy

Human Movement Studies & Special Education Faculty Publications

s pressure mounts for intercollegiate athletic departments to be more selfsufficient, administrators must respond by increasing generated revenues. Despite the importance of ticket sales in this endeavor, however, little is known about the underlying ticket pricing structures and policies used by National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) institutions. Of the limited existing scholarship focused on managerial pricing decisions in the field of sport management, only professional sports settings have been addressed. Given the unique operational differences between professional and intercollegiate sport, this paper is designed to establish a foundation from which to build future research concerning the pricing of college sport …

Federated Authentication Using The Cloud (Cloud Aura), Abdulwahid Abdullah Al Abdulwahid Jan 2017

Federated Authentication Using The Cloud (Cloud Aura), Abdulwahid Abdullah Al Abdulwahid

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Individuals, businesses and governments undertake an ever-growing range of activities online and via various Internet-enabled digital devices. Unfortunately, these activities, services, information and devices are the targets of cybercrimes. Verifying the user legitimacy to use/access a digital device or service has become of the utmost importance. Authentication is the frontline countermeasure of ensuring only the authorised user is granted access; however, it has historically suffered from a range of issues related to the security and usability of the approaches. Traditionally deployed in a point-of-entry mode (although a number of implementations also provide for re-authentication), the intrusive nature of the control …

Saving The Children Of Shoreditch: Lady Cynthia Colville And Needy Families In East London, C.1900-1960, Kate Bradley Jan 2017

Saving The Children Of Shoreditch: Lady Cynthia Colville And Needy Families In East London, C.1900-1960, Kate Bradley

SOLON Law, Crime and History (previously SOLON Crimes and Misdemeanours: Deviance and the Law in Historical Perspective)

This article approaches the question of the 'child at risk' through the case of an elite individual who became involved in infant welfare and the juvenile courts: Lady Cynthia Colville. Colville entered into voluntary social work as an activity 'appropriate' for a woman of her standing. With her appointment as a lady-in-waiting to Queen Mary, the already very well-connected Colville had unrivalled access to the Royal Household for promoting the interests of her charities. The case of Colville provides a point of intersection for the historiographies on gender, class, welfare, and crime, and fresh insight into the relationship between 'innovation' …

Children Of A Very Tender Age Have Vicious Propensities': Child Witness Testimonies In Cases Of Sexual Abuse, Kim Stevenson Jan 2017

Children Of A Very Tender Age Have Vicious Propensities': Child Witness Testimonies In Cases Of Sexual Abuse, Kim Stevenson

SOLON Law, Crime and History (previously SOLON Crimes and Misdemeanours: Deviance and the Law in Historical Perspective)

The competency of child witnesses in cases of sexual abuse to give evidence in court and the admissibility and credibility of their testimony is a fundamental component in establishing whether an accused person is guilty or not. This has presented a significant challenge to the criminal justice process as under the common law the reception of children's evidence falls within the absolute discretion of the judiciary. The paper examines the legal expectations of child witnesses in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in the context of the religio-moral perspectives and debates that influenced and shaped judicial attitudes towards the reception of …

When To Spare The Rod? Legal Reactions And Popular Attitudes Towards The (In)Appropriate Chastisement Of Children, 1850-1910, Judith Rowbotham Jan 2017

When To Spare The Rod? Legal Reactions And Popular Attitudes Towards The (In)Appropriate Chastisement Of Children, 1850-1910, Judith Rowbotham

SOLON Law, Crime and History (previously SOLON Crimes and Misdemeanours: Deviance and the Law in Historical Perspective)

This article reflects on the boundary between acceptable and unacceptable violence through an examination of the corporal punishment of children, with a key focus on those standing in loco parentis rather than parents themselves. Through advice manuals and didactic literature, the debates are revealed which considered merits and demerits of the use of corporal punishment as opposed to moral persuasion as a way of inculcating necessary social lessons, intended to create good citizens. These manuals and the fiction are used, alongside newspaper reportage of court cases (heard for the most part in the summary courts, before magistrates – who themselves …

The Child As Risk: Precocious Girls And Sexual Consent In Late Victorian Britain, Victoria Bates Jan 2017

The Child As Risk: Precocious Girls And Sexual Consent In Late Victorian Britain, Victoria Bates

SOLON Law, Crime and History (previously SOLON Crimes and Misdemeanours: Deviance and the Law in Historical Perspective)

The figure of the precocious girl pervaded Victorian culture, yet is poorly understood. This article focuses on concerns about sexual precocity and their influence on age-of-consent debates in the 1880s. It shows that even this single form of precocity (sexual) took multiple forms and was a malleable concept, often used selectively in parliamentary debates to suit particular agendas. These different uses of precocity did have in common, however, a tendency to be situated against the normal as 'ideal' rather than only statistically 'typical'. As precocity was generally measured against the ideal sexual development and behaviour of respectable North European girls, …

Perceptions Of Parental Child Homicide In English Popular Visual Culture 1800-1850, Margaret L. Arnot Jan 2017

Perceptions Of Parental Child Homicide In English Popular Visual Culture 1800-1850, Margaret L. Arnot

SOLON Law, Crime and History (previously SOLON Crimes and Misdemeanours: Deviance and the Law in Historical Perspective)

This article discusses in depth several English illustrated broadsides produced in the first half of the nineteenth century and depicting child homicides. It provides the most detailed analysis to date of the complex interplay of illustration, verse and prose on murder sheets from the period. The cultural representations of homicides of children found in these broadsides contributed in important ways to understandings of culpability for the killings of infants and young children. Rather than simply illustrating the texts on the broadsides, the visual images amplified the emotional resonance of this medium, arguably increasing its effectiveness. In the hands of anonymous, …

Organizational Learning From Failure: Present Theory And Future Inquiries, Vinit M. Desai, David Maslach, Peter Madsen Jan 2017

Organizational Learning From Failure: Present Theory And Future Inquiries, Vinit M. Desai, David Maslach, Peter Madsen

Faculty Publications

This chapter reviews past and present theoretical perspectives on organizational learning from failure. We begin by describing the organizational learning process and what it means to learn through failure. We outline and describe several challenges for future research: (1) Why do some organizations fail to learn from failures? (2) Why do some organizations fail again after learning from failures? (3) How do some organizations prevent other organizations from learning vicariously through their failures? (4) How can organizations learn from near failures? and (5) How can organizations learn from hypothetical failures? In sum, we hope this chapter motivates and inspires researchers …

'An Egiptian And Noe Xtian Woman’: Gypsy Identity And Race Law In Early America, Ann Ostendorf Jan 2017

'An Egiptian And Noe Xtian Woman’: Gypsy Identity And Race Law In Early America, Ann Ostendorf

History Faculty Scholarship

Though many scholars have referenced Joan Scott as the earliest Gypsy in North America, thanks to a 1695 Henrico County Virginia court record identifying her as “an Egiptian and noe Xtian woman,” none have explored her life further. Despite this, an examination of the fornication charge against Scott suggests much about her life. Scott entered the colony twenty years before her fornication charge and while unmarried bore a child whose father the court considered a man of color. In these ways, Scott’s life appears similar to her contemporaries. Yet, in other ways Scott’s experience differed. By allowing the court to …

On Degree Bound For Syzygies Of Polynomial Invariants, Zhao Gao Jan 2017

On Degree Bound For Syzygies Of Polynomial Invariants, Zhao Gao

Senior Independent Study Theses

Suppose G is a finite linearly reductive group. The degree bound for the syzygy ideal of the invariant ring of G is given in [2]. We develop the theory of commutative algebra and give the proof from [2] that the ideal of relations of the minimal set of generators of invariant ring of a finite linearly reductive group G is generated in degree at most 2|G|.

La (Re)Presentación De Las Mujeres En La Sociedad Puertorriqueña: Un Análisis Comparativo De Las Obras De Rosario Ferré Y Ana Lydia Vega, Gina B. Williamson

Senior Independent Study Theses

For Country, Liberty, And Money: Privateering And The Ideologies Of The American Revolution, Scott D. Wagner Jan 2017

For Country, Liberty, And Money: Privateering And The Ideologies Of The American Revolution, Scott D. Wagner

Senior Independent Study Theses

Along with service in the Continental Army and Navy and the various state militias, American patriots during the Revolutionary War had the option of sailing aboard privateers, private ships authorized to attack British commerce during the war. Where studies analyzing other military forces during the Revolution have been more nuanced, scholars that have looked at privateering have either focused on its strategic effectiveness during the conflict or merely written it off as a profit-driven phenomenon of maritime plunder. Privateering played a role in the course of the Revolution to a degree, but more importantly the practice was influenced by the …

“Marching Mothers”: The Battle For Desegregation In Cleveland Public Schools, 1957-1976, Theresa Dunne Jan 2017

“Marching Mothers”: The Battle For Desegregation In Cleveland Public Schools, 1957-1976, Theresa Dunne

Senior Independent Study Theses

In 1957, the Cleveland Municipal School District’s (CMSD) Board of Education implemented a relay program to address issues of overcrowding in Cleveland public schools. Solely affecting schools that served a predominately black student body on Cleveland’s rigidly segregated East Side, this program split the school day into two three-and-a-half hour sessions to accommodate increasing student body sizes, shortening the school day for African American pupils by an hour-and-a-half compared to the five hours in the classroom given to white peers. As mothers of children on the relay program realized that this was the Board of Education’s permanent solution to overcrowding, …

Laughing Against White Supremacy: Marginalized Performance Of Resistance Comedy, Caren Holmes Jan 2017

Laughing Against White Supremacy: Marginalized Performance Of Resistance Comedy, Caren Holmes

Senior Independent Study Theses

This study examines the political influence of charged standup comedy as a form of protest in resistance movements against white supremacy. It examines the experiences of seven marginalized comics who confront oppression through this non-traditional and humor based form of protest. Over the course of two months I conducted and filmed eight in-depth, semi-formal interviews with seven comics of color; six women and one trans-non-binary person, as well as an academic who specializes in studying the production of “charged humor.” I attended more than 30 standup shows and filmed several performances. In my analysis I explore four major themes, (1) …

The Search For Gto: Determining Optimal Poker Strategy Using Linear Programming, Stuart Young Jan 2017

The Search For Gto: Determining Optimal Poker Strategy Using Linear Programming, Stuart Young

Senior Independent Study Theses

This project applies techniques from game theory and linear programming to find the optimal strategies of two variants of poker. A set of optimal poker strategies describe a Nash equilibrium, where no player can improve their outcome by changing their own strategy, given the strategies of their opponent(s). We first consider Kuhn Poker as a simple application of our methodology. We then turn our attention to 2-7 Draw Poker, a modern variant onto which little previous research is focused. However, the techniques that we use are incapable of solving large, full-scale variants of poker such as 2-7 Draw. Therefore, we …

La Fiebra Telenovela: Audience Perceptions Of Telenovelas And Their Representation Of Economic Disparity, Brenda Khor Jan 2017

La Fiebra Telenovela: Audience Perceptions Of Telenovelas And Their Representation Of Economic Disparity, Brenda Khor

Senior Independent Study Theses

Telenovelas play an important role in communicating Latin American issues. Viewers watch and engage with this popular melodramatic medium on a daily basis. As a result, telenovelas are a valuable ritual for Latin Americans. Telenovelas affect how societies view themselves. They expose viewers to social and political issues with the aim of public discourse (Joyce 49; Pastina 165; Pastina et al. “The Centrality” 2). My research explores audience engagement with contemporary Mexican telenovelas, focusing on their views of economic disparity representation, and how those representations impact their understanding of self and society.

To carry out my study, I conducted ethnographic …

The Relationship Between Self-Esteem, Ambivalence, And Relationship Outcomes Within Romantic Partnerships, Victoria J. Schriber Jan 2017

The Relationship Between Self-Esteem, Ambivalence, And Relationship Outcomes Within Romantic Partnerships, Victoria J. Schriber

Senior Independent Study Theses

The current study analyzes self-esteem and the apparent mood of one’s partner as predictors of perceived responsibility, level of felt rejection, and relationship satisfaction in romantic relationships. The study hypothesizes that ambivalence will act as a moderating variable between self-esteem and romantic relationship outcomes. Previous research on the topic suggests that self-esteem is associated with how participants react to their romantic partner when they are in a specific mood. The current study will be one of the first to examine how ambivalence affects self-esteem’s effect on romantic relationships. The results replicate previous research, showing that self-esteem interacts with partner’s mood …

What Is Privacy? The Threat Of Surveillance And Blackmail In The 21st Century, Harrison S. Ruprecht Jan 2017

What Is Privacy? The Threat Of Surveillance And Blackmail In The 21st Century, Harrison S. Ruprecht

Senior Independent Study Theses

In an interview published in Wired magazine on November 12, 2013, Steven Levy asked Bill Gates, in virtue of recent NSA revelations, “What is the proper balance of surveillance and security, and where do we go from here?”[1] Gates responded, “Historically, privacy was almost implicit, because it was hard to find and gather information. But in the digital world, whether it's digital cameras or satellites or just what you click on, we need to have more explicit rules - not just for governments but for private companies.”[2] In many ways Gates’ thought anticipates my project. In the pages …

"Orange Is The New Black": The Skin-Tanning Phenomenon And Its Influence On Perceptions Of Race, Class, And Gender, Madeleine Polovick Jan 2017

"Orange Is The New Black": The Skin-Tanning Phenomenon And Its Influence On Perceptions Of Race, Class, And Gender, Madeleine Polovick

Senior Independent Study Theses

This research paper examines how skin tanning attitudes and behaviors influence our perceptions of race, class, and gender. I also focus on White people and the possible relationship between racial bias and favorable opinions of tanned skin among this population; there is currently no research on this. This study is pertinent because within the last century tanned skin has become a beauty standard in Western society and People of Color continue to face discrimination on the basis of skin color. Additionally, various populations in Western society are pressured to engage in this behavior and to conform to standards, such as …
