Gridded Snow Water Equivalent Reconstruction For Utah Using Forest Inventory And Analysis Tree-Ring Data, Daniel Barandiaran, Shih-Yu (Simon) Wang, R. Justin Derose

Plants, Soils, and Climate Faculty Publications

Snowpack observations in the Intermountain West are sparse and short, making them difficult for use in depicting past variability and extremes. This study presents a reconstruction of April 1 snow water equivalent (SWE) for the period of 1850–1989 using increment cores collected by the U.S. Forest Service, Interior West Forest Inventory and Analysis program (FIA). In the state of Utah, SWE was reconstructed for 38 snow course locations using a combination of standardized tree-ring indices derived from both FIA increment cores and publicly available tree-ring chronologies. These individual reconstructions were then interpolated to a 4-km grid using an objective analysis …

Efficacy Of Repeatedly Used Cidr Device In Cattle Reproduction: A Metaanalysisreview Of Progesterone Concentration And Conception Rate, Muhammad Furqan Asghar Chacher, Armağan Çolak, Armağan Hayirli

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

n order to reduce estrus synchronization cost, utilization of residual progesterone (P4) in the used controlled internal drug release (CIDR) device upon sanitization can be possible. Two datasets were compiled from 8 and 7 research articles involving 3434 (2653 heifers + 771 lactating cows + 10 ovariectomized cows) and 7301 cattle (3879 heifers + 3422 lactating cows) to evaluate blood P4 concentration and conception rate, respectively, in response to repeatedly used CIDR devices after sanitization via autoclaving and disinfection. As the number of CIDR usages increased, blood P4 concentration decreased linearly (y = -0.484X + 3.135, R2 = 0.99, P < 0.001). Blood P4 concentration (1.52 vs. 2.20 ng/mL; P < 0.002) and conception rate (40.76 vs. 32.96%, P < 0.05) for lactating cows were lower than those for heifers. The sanitization method did not affect blood P4 concentration, but reused CIDR device subjected to disinfection was associated with reduced conception rate. In summary, depending upon the initial P4 load (1.38-1.90 g), the CIDR device could be used twice in lactating cows and four times in heifers after autoclaving to achieve target blood P4 concentrations.

Ferritin, heavy polypeptide 1 (FTH1) is a kind of ferritin complex that catalyzes the conversion of Fe(II) into Fe(III) to protect the cell from oxidative damage. Recent research has shown that FTH1 is also associated with several disease-related processes, such as inflammation and tumor progression and so on. In this study, the coding sequence (CDS) of FTH1 in Jinding ducks was cloned. The CDS sequence revealed an open reading frame of 546 nucleotides encoding a protein with 181 amino acids. Based on this sequence, the duck FTH1 protein is predicted to have conserved domains typical of eukaryotic ferritin. Only one …

Originalism And Level Of Generality, Peter J. Smith Jan 2017

Originalism And Level Of Generality, Peter J. Smith

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Even if one concedes that the meaning of the Constitution today is its original meaning, at what level of generality should one seek that meaning? In considering whether bans on same-sex marriage violate the Fourteenth Amendment, for example, should we seek to determine how the framers of the Amendment would have answered that question, or should we instead seek to discern the broad principle — perhaps “equality” or “no caste-like discrimination” — that the Amendment objectively incorporated, even if application of that principle today might produce results that the framers would not have anticipated? The level of generality at which …

Awareness As A First Step Toward Overcoming Implicit Bias, Cynthia Lee Jan 2017

Awareness As A First Step Toward Overcoming Implicit Bias, Cynthia Lee

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

In this book chapter, Cynthia Lee explains that raising awareness of implicit bias is a necessary first step toward eliminating such bias. Lee discusses various ways legal actors can raise awareness about implicit bias, including implicit bias trainings and jury instructions attempting to educate jurors about implicit bias. She concludes that making racial bias (or other types of bias) salient is probably the most effective way to raise awareness of implicit bias in the courtroom setting and discusses the social science literature that supports this conclusion. In light of some studies suggesting that making bias salient may backfire, she suggests …

Presidential Politics And Judicial Review, Robert L. Glicksman, David Aldeman Jan 2017

Presidential Politics And Judicial Review, Robert L. Glicksman, David Aldeman

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

This Article assesses the impact of judicial review on one of the nation’s foundational environmental statutes, the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). Based on litigation spanning fifteen years, we find that the stringency of judicial review is driven by the interaction of judicial ideology and presidential politics. Our principal findings are two-fold: First, judicial ideology, here defined by political party affiliation, is most influential when NEPA’s environmental goals conflict with the politics of the presidential administration in power. Second, the influence of judicial ideology is mediated by the distribution of cases across federal circuits and the ideological balance of judges …

How Adverse Outcome Pathways Can Aid The Development And Use Of Computational Prediction Models For Regulatory Toxicology, Clemens Wittwehr, Hristo Aladjov, Gerald Ankley, Hugh Byrne, Joop Deknecht

Articles

Efforts are underway to transform regulatory toxicology and chemical safety assessment from a largely empirical science based on direct observation of apical toxicity outcomes in whole organism toxicity tests to a predictive one in which outcomes and risk are inferred from accumulated mechanistic understanding. The adverse outcome pathway (AOP) framework provides a systematic approach for organizing knowledge that may support such inference. Likewise, computational models of biological systems at various scales provide another means and platform to integrate current biological understanding to facilitate inference and extrapolation. We argue that the systematic organization of knowledge into AOP frameworks can inform and …

An Enhanced Spring-Particle Model For Red Blood Cell Structural Mechanics: Application To The Stomatocyte–Discocyte– Echinocyte Transformation, Mingzhu Chen, Fergal Boyle

Articles

Red blood cells (RBCs) are the most abundant cellular element suspended in blood. Together with the usual biconcave-shaped RBCs, i.e., discocytes, unusual-shaped RBCs are also observed under physiological and experimental conditions, e.g., stomatocytes and echinocytes. Stomatocytes and echinocytes are formed from discocytes and in addition can revert back to being discocytes; this shape change is known as the stomatocyte–discocyte–echinocyte (SDE) transformation. To-date, limited research has been conducted on the numerical prediction of the full SDE transformation. Spring- particle RBC (SP-RBC) models are commonly used to numerically predict RBC mechanics and rheology. However, these models are incapable of predicting the full …
