Experimental Methodology For The Quantification Of Crack Tip Plastic Zone And Shape From The Analysis Of Displacement Fields, J. M. Vasco-Olmo, Fa Diaz, M. N. James, C. J. Christopher, E. A. Patterson

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

The current work presents a novel methodology for the experimental quantification of the crack tip plastic zone during fatigue crack growth. This methodology is based on the application of yield criteria to estimate the area and the shape of the plastic zone at the crack tip. The implementation of the proposed methodology requires the use of strain maps calculated from the differentiation of the displacement fields obtained by digital image correlation (DIC). Stress maps can subsequently be inferred from both von Mises and Tresca yield criteria. Fatigue tests and associated measurements of plastic zone size and shape were conducted on …

Social Geology — Integrating Sustainability Concepts Into Earth Sciences, Iain S. Stewart, Joel C. Gill Jan 2017

Social Geology — Integrating Sustainability Concepts Into Earth Sciences, Iain S. Stewart, Joel C. Gill

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Most geologists would argue that geoscientific knowledge, experience, and guidance is critical for addressing many of society's most acute environmental challenges, yet few geologists are directly engaged in current discourses around sustainable development. That is surprising given that several attributes make modern geoscience well placed to make critical contributions to contemporary sustainability thinking. Here, we argue that if geoscientists are to make our know-how relevant to sustainability science, two aspects seem clear. Firstly, the geoscience community needs to substantially broaden its constituency, not only forging interdisciplinary links with other environmental disciplines but also drawing from the human and behavioral sciences. …

Androdialysis: Analysis Of Android Intent Effectiveness In Malware Detection, A Feizollah, Nb Anuar, R Salleh, G Suarez-Tangil, S Furnell

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

The wide popularity of Android systems has been accompanied by increase in the number of malware targeting these systems. This is largely due to the open nature of the Android framework that facilitates the incorporation of third-party applications running on top of any Android device. Inter-process communication is one of the most notable features of the Android framework as it allows the reuse of components across process boundaries. This mechanism is used as gateway to access different sensitive services in the Android framework. In the Android platform, this communication system is usually driven by a late runtime binding messaging object …

A Genetic Programming Framework For 2d Platform Ai, Se Gaudl Jan 2017

A Genetic Programming Framework For 2d Platform Ai, Se Gaudl

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

There currently exists a wide range of techniques to model and evolve artificial players for games. Existing techniques range from black box neural networks to entirely hand-designed solutions. In this paper, we demonstrate the feasibility of a genetic programming framework using human controller input to derive meaningful artificial players which can, later on, be optimised by hand. The current state of the art in game character design relies heavily on human designers to manually create and edit scripts and rules for game characters. To address this manual editing bottleneck, current computational intelligence techniques approach the issue with fully autonomous character …

Eco-Efficiency Of High-Yielding Variety Rice Cultivation After Accounting For On-Farm Environmental Damage As An Undesirable Output: An Empirical Analysis From Bangladesh, N-E Sabiha, R Salim, S Rahman Jan 2017

Eco-Efficiency Of High-Yielding Variety Rice Cultivation After Accounting For On-Farm Environmental Damage As An Undesirable Output: An Empirical Analysis From Bangladesh, N-E Sabiha, R Salim, S Rahman

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

This study computes the eco-efficiency of high-yielding variety (HYV) rice production by including an on-farm environmental damage index (OFEDI) as an undesirable output using data envelopment analysis. It then identifies its determinants by applying an interval regression procedure on a sample of 317 farmers from north-western Bangladesh. Results reveal that the mean level of the OFEDI-adjusted production efficiency (i.e. eco-efficiency) is 89 per cent, whereas ignoring OFEDI adjustment (i.e. with OFEDI = 0) reduces the mean level of efficiency to 69 per cent, implying that the production of undesirable output or on-farm environmental damage induces an efficiency loss of 20 …

Cultural Differences In Attention: Eye Movement Evidence From A Comparative Visual Search Task., Albandri Alotaibi, Geoffrey Underwood, Alastair D. Smith Jan 2017

Cultural Differences In Attention: Eye Movement Evidence From A Comparative Visual Search Task., Albandri Alotaibi, Geoffrey Underwood, Alastair D. Smith

School of Psychology

Individual differences in visual attention have been linked to thinking style: analytic thinking (common in individualistic cultures) is thought to promote attention to detail and focus on the most important part of a scene, whereas holistic thinking (common in collectivist cultures) promotes attention to the global structure of a scene and the relationship between its parts. However, this theory is primarily based on relatively simple judgement tasks. We compared groups from Great Britain (an individualist culture) and Saudi Arabia (a collectivist culture) on a more complex comparative visual search task, using simple natural scenes. A higher overall number of fixations …

Curing Resin Infused Composites In The Autoclave, R Wilkinson, Rk Cullen, J Summerscales Jan 2017

Curing Resin Infused Composites In The Autoclave, R Wilkinson, Rk Cullen, J Summerscales

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

There is increasing interest across the range of composites manufacturing processes for cost reduction with a current focus on out-of-autoclave (OOA) processes. However, for the highest performance composites, the maximum fibre volume fraction is limited by the compressibility characteristics of the reinforcement. For any specific reinforcement, vacuum-only processes cannot achieve fibre contents as high when additional external pressure is applied. Compression moulding in a hydraulic press creates limited compaction perpendicular to the line of action of the press. The autoclave is good for complex three-dimensional components. Autoclave processes normally use pre-impregnated reinforcements with a premium price for the impregnation process …

The Development Of The Tenora, N Bonet Jan 2017

The Development Of The Tenora, N Bonet

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

The tenora is a type of tenor shawm from Catalonia, an area in both northern Spain and southern France (see Figure 1), and its invention is usually attributed to Andreu Toron (1815–1886) of Perpignan in North Catalonia. Like members of the shawm family, it has ‘a conical bore, wider than that of oboes, and a broad double reed of cane placed on a metal staple which is partly enclosed in a wooden pirouette,’ to which Toron added a sophisticated key system and a flaring metal bell. While Toron’s design has six finger holes and 13 keys, however, surviving examples have …

High-Impact Practices In Anthropology: Creating A Bridge Between Liberal Arts And Neoliberal Values, Susan Kirkpatrick Smith, Brandon D. Lundy, Cheyenne Dahlmann

Faculty Articles

Neoliberal values are dramatically affecting higher education in the United States, with a focus on running these institutions as businesses and molding students into productive workers. This shift toward training and away from traditional liberal arts education at U.S. universities and colleges has occurred even as studies demonstrate that the ability to adapt in a rapidly evolving marketplace promotes long-term professional success. While neoliberalism and traditional liberal arts education are often seen as antithetical, we show how one anthropology program has combined these values into pedagogical practice through a select subset of high impact practices to improve academic outcomes for …

Market Power And Inequality: The Antitrust Counterrevolution And Its Discontents, Lina M. Khan, Sandeep Vaheesan

Faculty Scholarship

In recent years, economic inequality has become a central topic of public debate in the United States and much of the developed world. The popularity of Thomas Piketty’s nearly 700-page tome, Capital in the Twenty-First Century, is a testament to this newfound focus on economic disparity. As top intellectuals, politicians, and public figures have come to recognize inequality as a major problem that must be addressed, they have offered a range of potential solutions. Frequently mentioned proposals include reforming the tax system, strengthening organized labor, revising international trade and investment agreements, and reducing the size of the financial sector.

Amazon's Antitrust Paradox, Lina M. Khan

Faculty Scholarship

Amazon is the titan of twenty-first century commerce. In addition to being a retailer, it is now a marketing platform, a delivery and logistics network, a payment service, a credit lender, an auction house, a major book publisher, a producer of television and films, a fashion designer, a hardware manufacturer, and a leading host of cloud server space. Although Amazon has clocked staggering growth, it generates meager profits, choosing to price below-cost and expand widely instead. Through this strategy, the company has positioned itself at the center of e-commerce and now serves as essential infrastructure for a host of other …

The Original Theory Of Constitutionalism, David Singh Grewal, Jedediah S. Purdy Jan 2017

The Original Theory Of Constitutionalism, David Singh Grewal, Jedediah S. Purdy

Faculty Scholarship

The conflict between various versions of “originalism” and “living constitutionalism” has defined the landscape of constitutional theory and practice for more than a generation, and it shows no sign of abating. Although each camp has developed a variety of methodological approaches and substantive distinctions, each one also returns to a core concern: the democratic authority of constitutional review. The late Justice Scalia crystallized the originalist concern in his dissent in Obergefell v. Hodges: “It is of overwhelming importance … who it is that rules me. Today’s decree says that my Ruler, and the Ruler of 320 million Americans coast-to-coast, …

Clarifying The Clear Meaning Of Separability, Shyamkrishna Balganesh

Faculty Scholarship

Speaking of the Copyright Act of 1909, noted copyright scholar Benjamin Kaplan had this to say about the role of judges therein:

[T]he statute, like its predecessors, leaves the development of fundamentals to the judges. Indeed the courts have had to be consulted at nearly every point, for the text of the statute has a maddeningly casual prolixity and imprecision throughout....

Judges, however, who in recent times have inclined against brutality, have run the risk of appearing slightly ridiculous in their tortuous interpretations.

The Copyright Act of 1976 was designed to avoid this imprecision and overt reliance on judicial creativity. …

Causing Copyright, Shyamkrishna Balganesh Jan 2017

Causing Copyright, Shyamkrishna Balganesh

Faculty Scholarship

Copyright protection attaches to an original work of expression the moment it is created and fixed in a tangible medium. Yet modern copyright law contains no viable mechanism by which to examine whether someone is causally responsible for the creation and fixation of the work. Whenever the issue of causation arises, copyright law relies on its preexisting doctrinal devices to resolve the issue, in the process cloaking its intuitions about causation in altogether extraneous considerations. This Article argues that copyright law embodies an unstated yet distinct theory of authorial causation, which connects the element of human agency to a work …

Search For B− → Μ −Ν¯Μ Decays At The Belle Experiment, A. Sibidanov Et Al., Ratnappuli L. Kulasiri

Faculty Articles

We report the result of a search for the decay B−→μ−ν¯μ. The signal events are selected based on the presence of a high momentum muon and the topology of the rest of the event showing properties of a generic B-meson decay, as well as the missing energy and momentum being consistent with the hypothesis of a neutrino from the signal decay. We find a 2.4 standard deviation excess above background including systematic uncertainties, which corresponds to a branching fraction of (B−→μ−ν¯μ)=(6.46±2.22±1.60)×10−7 or a frequentist 90% confidence level interval on the B−→μ−ν¯μ branching fraction of [2.9,10.7]×10−7. This result is obtained from …
