The performance of the Rice Crop Insurance Program (RCIP) of the Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC) was assessed to explain the low number of insured farmers and suggest ways to improve the program’s efficiency and effectiveness. Documents were reviewed and primary data were collected through survey of participating rice farmers and key informant interview of the officers and staff of PCIC Region 4 and National Irrigation Administration Region IV Employees Multipurpose Cooperative (NEMCO). Descriptive statistics, gap analysis, and Likert scale scoring were used in data analysis. Results of the study revealed gaps in enrollment in the program, duration of filing …
Decentralization, The Internal Revenue Allotment, And Shared Growth: An Examination Of Correlations, Ferdinand C. Maquito
Decentralization, The Internal Revenue Allotment, And Shared Growth: An Examination Of Correlations, Ferdinand C. Maquito
Journal of Public Affairs and Development
This is a macro study on the role of internal revenue allotments in decentralization to help the Philippines achieve shared growth. The research attempted to answer two interrelated development policy questions: 1) has the Philippines achieved shared growth; and 2) does the Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA) have the potential of contributing to shared growth? Patterns of correlation were distilled from available provincial as well as national data on average income, poverty incidence, income distribution, and IRA. Correlation analysis for the second question was supplemented with an analysis of the IRA formula. Results showed that growth in the Philippines has been …

Sonic Affects And The Production Of Space: ‘Music By Handle’ And The Politics Of Street Music In Victorian London, Paul Simpson
Sonic Affects And The Production Of Space: ‘Music By Handle’ And The Politics Of Street Music In Victorian London, Paul Simpson
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
This article examines the affective capacities of sound and its role in the on-going production of social spaces. More specifically, the article seeks to understand the situated nature of sound’s affectivity within particular social-political-material contexts or circumstances. This is developed through a discussion of an empirical case study related to the history of street music: the ‘street music debates’ of Victorian London. The interrelation here of the sounds street musicians made, the broader urban soundscape of the time, who played street music and who it was that found themselves listening to this music demonstrate clearly the situated affective capacities of …

Sea-Ice Dynamics In An Arctic Coastal Polynya During The Past 6500 Years, J Knies, I Pathirana, P Cabedo-Sanz, A Banica, K Fabian, Tl Rasmussen, M Forwick, St Belt
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
The production of high-salinity brines during sea-ice freezing in circum-arctic coastal polynyas is thought to be part of northern deep water formation as it supplies additional dense waters to the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation system. To better predict the effect of possible future summer ice-free conditions in the Arctic Ocean on global climate, it is important to improve our understanding of how climate change has affected sea-ice and brine formation, and thus finally dense water formation during the past. Here, we show temporal coherence between sea-ice conditions in a key Arctic polynya (Storfjorden, Svalbard) and patterns of deep water convection …

Assessing The Cellular And Adhesive Interactions In In Vitro Models Of Mantle Cell Lymphoma, David Tucker
Assessing The Cellular And Adhesive Interactions In In Vitro Models Of Mantle Cell Lymphoma, David Tucker
Peninsula Medical School Theses
Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a rare lymphoproliferative disorder (LPD) that has very poor survival. Like other LPDs, the neoplastic cells of MCL have an intimate dependence upon accessory cells within haematopoietic tissues. Understanding and exploiting the tissue-relationships of the mantle cells may therefore lead to further new approaches to treatment. This study work has set out to construct an in vitro system to model relevant aspects of the tissue-dependent behaviour of the neoplastic mantle cells, seeking to establish the link between in vitro behaviour and clinical phenotype, and establishing the feasibility of this system to study the effects of …

One-Dimensional And Two-Dimensional Green–Naghdi Equations For Sloshing In Shallow Basins, Mohammad R. Jalali, Alistair Borthwick
One-Dimensional And Two-Dimensional Green–Naghdi Equations For Sloshing In Shallow Basins, Mohammad R. Jalali, Alistair Borthwick
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
This paper presents a verified model of weakly non-linear wave sloshing in shallow basins, based on level I Green–Naghdi (GN) mass and momentum equations derived for mild-sloped beds. The model is verified for sloshing of an initially sinusoidal free surface perturbation in a square tank with a horizontal bed. The model is also used to investigate free surface sloshing of an initial Gaussian hump in closed square basins, over horizontal and non-uniform bed topographies. Analysis of the free surface slosh motions demonstrates that the model gives predictions in satisfactory agreement with the analytical solution of linearised shallow water theory obtained …

Amplitude, Latency, And Peak Velocity In Accommodation And Disaccommodation Dynamics, Aj Del Águila-Carrasco, Jj Esteve-Taboada, E Papadatou, T Ferrer-Blasco, R Montés-Micó
School of Health Professions
The aim of this work was to ascertain whether there are differences in amplitude, latency, and peak velocity of accommodation and disaccommodation responses when different analysis strategies are used to compute them, such as fitting different functions to the responses or for smoothing them prior to computing the parameters. Accommodation and disaccommodation responses from four subjects to pulse changes in demand were recorded by means of aberrometry. Three different strategies were followed to analyze such responses: fitting an exponential function to the experimental data; fitting a Boltzmann sigmoid function to the data; and smoothing the data. Amplitude, latency, and peak …
Bottom Trapped Internal Waves Over The Malin Sea Continental Slope, Nataliya Stashchuk, Vasiliy Vlasenko
Bottom Trapped Internal Waves Over The Malin Sea Continental Slope, Nataliya Stashchuk, Vasiliy Vlasenko
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Three-dimensional dynamics of internal tides on the continental slope of the Malin Sea is studied numerically and validated with the observational data collected on the 88-th cruise of the RRS “James Cook” in June–July 2013. Observed in-situ bottom intensification of baroclinic tidal currents was reproduced in a series of numerical experiments using the Massachusetts Institute of Technology general circulation model. The baroclinic tidal dynamics is explained in terms of superposition of two wave processes developing in the area. One of them is a tidal beam generated at the shelf break and radiating tidal energy downward into abyss. The second important …

The Effect Of Hospital Biocide Sodium Dichloroisocyanurate On The Viability And Properties Of Clostridium Difficile Spores., L. T. Joshi, A. Welsch, J. Hawkins, L. Baillie
Peninsula Dental School
UNLABELLED: Clostridium difficile is the primary cause of healthcare-associated diarrhoea globally and produces spores which are resistant to commonly used biocides and are able persist on contaminated surfaces for months. This study examined the effect of sublethal concentrations of the biocide sodium dichloroisocyanurate (NaDCC) on the viability of spores produced by 21 clinical isolates of C. difficile representing a range of PCR ribotypes. Spores exposed to 500 ppm NaDCC for 10 min exhibited between a 4-6 log10 reduction in viability which was independent of spore PCR ribotype. The effect of sublethal concentrations of biocide on the surface properties of exosporium …

Evaluating Rehabilitation: An Ongoing Challenge., Jennifer Freeman
School of Health Professions
Research on the effectiveness of rehabilitation interventions is crucial for people with multiple sclerosis (MS), their caregivers, treatment providers and policy makers. Whilst there has been a steady increase in rehabilitation research activity over the past decade, studies have tended to focus on the evaluation of single interventions, such as supervised exercise programmes, and even here there are challenges. In comparison few studies have evaluated the more complex packages, such as multi-disciplinary inpatient rehabilitation. Further, as is typical across the rehabilitation arena, many of the studies undertaken have been pilot or feasibility studies which have not moved onto a definitive …

Regional-Scale Probabilistic Shoreline Evolution Modelling For Flood-Risk Assessment, Stuart Stripling, Michael Panzeri, Belen Blanco, Kate Rossington, Paul Sayers, Alistair Borthwick
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Rapid deterministic modelling of shoreline evolution at regional and coastal-scheme scale enables Monte-Carlo simulations by which long-term shoreline statistics can be estimated. This paper describes UnaLinea, a fast, accurate finite difference solver of the one-line sediment continuity equation. The model is verified for the evolution of an initially straight shoreline of a plane beach subject to regular breaking waves at constant angle of incidence in the presence of either a groyne or a continuous single-point feed of sediment. Grid convergence and stability tests are used to obtain accurate, stable results, with satisfactory computational efficiency. Influences of wave input filtering and …
