Inorganic Biodegradable Substrates For Devices And Systems, Chang-Soo Kim, Richard K. Brow, D. E. Day

Disclosed are biodegradable glass substrates that are useful as functional elements of solid-state devices. In particular, biodegradable glass substrates having a rapidly degradable glass and a slowly degradable glass provide a structural platform that completely dissolves following a desired operational lifetime of devices such as implanted electronic devices, implanted sensor devices, and optical fibers.

Factors Influencing The Case Selection Of Irs Special Agents, Robert A. Warren

This study examines how Internal Revenue Service-Criminal Investigation (CI) Special Agents select cases to investigate during a period of stagnant budgets and significant personnel attrition. Semi-structured interviews (N=30) of current and retired agents and supervisors, along with information gleaned from published reports and through Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, suggests that special agents did not believe that the 13% reduction of IRS-CI's appropriated funding from 2010 to 2016 impeded their ability to select and investigate the best tax and money laundering cases, even though the funding gap resulted in a 19% reduction in special agents. Reducing Computation Time Of Vortex Position For Helicopter Flight Simulations, Matthew Tibbetts, David Peters

Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Independent Study

The purpose of this investigation was to reduce the computational cost of vortex mapping for helicopter flight simulators, with the particular case of landing a helicopter on a moving ship. We pursued this goal by modeling the velocity using a series of Fourier transforms, linear fits, and Legendre polynomial fits. The end result was a matrix of 9 coefficient values which could be used to recreate the vortex behavior of the original data set with some accuracy. This technique will allow flight simulators to generate vortex data quickly to improve their effectiveness in training pilots.

My primary complete accomplishment of the Fall 2017 semester in the Musculoskeletal Soft Tissue Laboratory is the addition of 3 3D printed parts to the grip strength device to improve the precision of the device. To reach the end result of these 3 parts, I 3D-modelled the parts, 3D printed the prototypes, and integrated the parts into the device for testing. Near the end of the semester I had seen this process through, and the grip strength device is now fully functional and the most accurate and precise it has been. In this paper we propose that institutions like the Schools of the Christian Brothers play an important role as a counterweight to free market inequalities. First we explore the free market mechanism and draw attention to its negative externalities. Then we highlight the resemblance between these negative externalities and the context that inspired Jean Baptiste de La Salle to found the Schools of the Christian Brothers. We show how the Christian Brothers organization is inspired by ideals that are sharply distinct from those that govern a strictly capitalist system. Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) mediates pain although the mechanisms are not well understood. Urothelial activation of protease activated receptor 4 (PAR4) results in urothelial MIF release, urothelial high mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) release and bladder pain in mice without bladder inflammation. All three effects are prevented by MIF inhibition while intravesical disulfide HMGB1 alone can induce bladder pain. This study utilizes genetic MIF deletion to determine whether MIF mediates PAR4-induced bladder pain and is upstream of HMGB1-induced bladder pain. The Nevada Supreme Court denied Archon Corporation’s petition for a writ of mandamus or prohibition challenging the denial of a motion to dismiss based on tolling of the statute of limitations. The court declined relief for the following three reasons; the statute-based argument that petitioners made to this court was not considered by the lower court, the court’s clarification of the law would alter the district court’s disposition because the district court made its decision on alternative grounds, and finally, because the district court denied the motion to dismiss without prejudice.

Background: Knowledge of infectious disease burden is necessary to appropriately allocate resources for prevention and control. In Latin America, rabies is among the most important zoonoses for human health and agriculture, but the burden of disease attributed to its main reservoir, the common vampire bat (Desmodus rotundus), remains uncertain. Methodology/Principal findings: We used questionnaires to quantify under-reporting of livestock deaths across 40 agricultural communities with differing access to health resources and epidemiological histories of vampire bat rabies (VBR) in the regions of Apurimac, Ayacucho and Cusco in southern Peru. Pathological high-frequency oscillations are a novel marker used to improve the delineation of epileptogenic tissue and, hence, the outcome of epilepsy surgery. Their practical clinical utilization is curtailed by the inability to discriminate them from physiological oscillations due to frequency overlap. Although it is well documented that pathological HFOs are suppressed by antiepileptic drugs (AEDs), the effect of AEDs on normal HFOs is not well known. In this experimental study, we have explored whether physiological HFOs (sharp-wave ripples) of hippocampal origin respond to AED treatment. Mindfulness, or paying attention on purpose in the present moment, can serve as a tool for qualitative researchers as they navigate the research setting and data collection. In this article, I provide an overview of mindfulness and suggest ways to incorporate mindfulness as a data collection tool. To demonstrate how to apply mindfulness to qualitative research, I share my personal experience in incorporating a mindfulness practice into data collection as part of a phenomenological study and what I learned in the process. Background

Malignant tumors are typically caused by a conglomeration of genomic aberrations—including point mutations, small insertions, small deletions, and large copy-number variations. In some cases, specific chemotherapies and targeted drug treatments are effective against tumors that harbor certain genomic aberrations. However, predictive aberrations (biomarkers) have not been identified for many tumor types and treatments. One way to address this problem is to examine the downstream, transcriptional effects of genomic aberrations and to identify characteristic patterns. Sexual violence is a widespread traumatic event that has physical, psychological, financial, and spiritual implications for victims, their friends and family, and the community. The negative and long-term effects include poor health outcomes, depression, substance abuse disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Many nurses who treat these patients are inadequately trained.

The treatment of nurses towards patients who are victims of sexual violence can mitigate or contribute to perceived revictimization of patients. This study, grounded on focused ethnography, explored the cultural patterns among Aetas of Nabuclod Pampanga specifically zeroing in on those practices that directly and indirectly affect the health of community members.
