The Study Of Zirconium Hydroxide And Zirconium (Iv) Metal-Organic Frameworks As Reactive Substrates For The Decomposition Of Chemical Warfare Agents, James W. Kollar

Nerve agents have been described by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention to be the most toxic and rapidly acting of chemical warfare agents. The present study investigates the efficacy of zirconium hydroxide, Zr(OH)4, and Zr(IV) Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) in the uptake and decomposition of the gas phase nerve agent simulant dimethyl methylphosphonate, DMMP. This investigation was carried out using two different methods: 1) with the use of Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform Spectroscopy (DRIFTS) to examine the surface reaction between DMMP and the solid; and 2) using a flow reactor system that monitored gas phase reaction …

Outer space is of vital importance for numerous civilian and military functions in the modern world. The idea of a space weapon involves something used, intended or designed for employment in, to or from outer space to cause injury or damage to the enemy during an armed conflict. Non-injurious, non-damaging space activities that adversely affect enemy military operations or capacity, though not involving the use of weapons, will nevertheless be methods of warfare. Article III of the Outer Space Treaty makes it clear that international law, including weapons law, applies in outer space. Defense Development As Internal Balancing: The Political Determinants Of Successful Emulation, Patrick J. Thompson

What are the political determinants of successful defense development in developing countries? Leveraging insights from the international relations and comparative politics literatures, I argue that successful defense development is a function of elite perceptions of external vulnerability at strategic junctures. As elite perceptions of external vulnerability increase, I expect state power for defense development to increase, thus improving defense development outcomes. I compare the relative utility of this novel argument by comparing it to three existing theories: the defense dependency approach; neorealism; and the institutional capacity approach. Using comparative historical analysis and process tracing, I test these four theories against …

"Theatre," asserts Japanese playwright Betsuyaku Minoru, "mirrors the spirit of the times." Building on this assumption, this thesis analyzes how the pressing social issues of two periods in modern Japanese history are reflected in two modern Japanese plays: The Little Match Girl (Macchi uri no sho¿jo, 1966) by Betsuyaku Minoru (b. 1937) and The King of La Mancha's Clothes (Gusha ni wa mienai La Mancha no o¿sama no hadaka, 1991) by Yokouchi Kensuke (b. 1961). Both plays provide meaningful commentary on the themes of patriarchal authority, prostitution, and inter-generational conflict through combining "contemporary" Japanese characters with Hans Christian Andersen Fairy …

The English Restoration’s heightened interest in sexuality promoted the use of rape narratives on the stage. Aphra Behn, the first woman to earn her living as a playwright, used these narratives in her work (specifically in The Rover and The City Heiress) as a means of social critique.

This paper analyzes the relationship between refugee populations per capita and terrorism incidents per capita in a host country. Using data from UNHCR and the Global Terrorism Database (GTD), I conduct cross-national time series poisson and OLS analyses for 164 countries during the years 1992-2013 to explain their relationship.

This thesis narrates a history of postwar cultural production framed by urban redevelopment in Beirut, Lebanon (1989-Present). Focusing on artists engagements with the city, this thesis demonstrates how artists thought through the legacies of war inflicted upon the beleaguered city of Beirut in order to construct livable futures.

Since the 9/11 attacks, American legislation and legal policy in regards to classifying and processing captured terrorists has fallen short of being fully effective and lawful. Trial and error by the Bush and Obama administrations has uncovered two key lessons: (1) captured terrorists are not typical prisoners of war and thus their detainment must involve more legal scrutiny than the latter; and (2) captured terrorists are not ordinary criminals and thus the civilian criminal court system, due to constitutional constraints, is not capable of adequately trying every count of terrorism.
