Cine Cine Bago Quiere: Homoseksuwalisasyon Ng Espasyo Ng Sinehan, Chuckberry Pascual Jan 2017

Cine Cine Bago Quiere: Homoseksuwalisasyon Ng Espasyo Ng Sinehan, Chuckberry Pascual

Katipunan

Social Media As A Recruitment Tool For Isis, Abdullah Almutairi Jan 2017

Social Media As A Recruitment Tool For Isis, Abdullah Almutairi

Masters Essays

ISIS entered public consciousness as a splinter group from Al-Qaida, both of which have been associated with random, unwarranted acts of violence and terror in the post 911 world. ISIS carved out its own “caliphate” hence the name ISIS, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria destroying both its subject territories cultural treasures and subjugating its people. Americans tend to think of ISIS as having sprung up in a power vacuum in a wave of self-radicalization. News reports featured barbarous acts of barbarism all committed in the name of the self- proclaimed state’s interpretation of Islam. However, behind this incongruous …

Painting Our Conflicts: A Thematic Analysis Study On The Role Of Artists In Peacemaking And Conflict Resolution, Kumail M. Almusaly

Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations

Artists have involved with their different styles and approaches to help resolving conflicts all over the world. They help in raising awareness of different conflicts through their activities that engage people with art. The creative elements of the art also help in exploring various means of conflict resolution and problem solving (Lumsden, 1997). This study examines the role of artist in society in the framework of conflict resolution and peacemaking. A qualitative research method is used in this research, which in result provides a better understanding of the work of Middle Eastern artists. The research includes in-depth interviews with two …

A Qualitative Media Analysis Of The Depiction Of Workplace Bullying In Hollywood Films, Maria C. Georgo Jan 2017

A Qualitative Media Analysis Of The Depiction Of Workplace Bullying In Hollywood Films, Maria C. Georgo

Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations

Work is a significant part of everyday life for many, so it is not surprising that it would be included in the storylines of many Hollywood films. Movies incorporate elements from everyday life, real or imagined. There is a plethora of research making connections between film and the social world, but not regarding workplace bullying. This study takes a close and in-depth look at workplace bullying as it is depicted in scenes from a sampling of 100 Hollywood films released 1994-2016. It is interpretive in nature and guided by the theoretical underpinnings of film theory, social construction of reality theory, …

On Comparative Algorithmic Pathfinding In Complex Networks For Resource-Constrained Software Agents, Michael Moran Jan 2017

On Comparative Algorithmic Pathfinding In Complex Networks For Resource-Constrained Software Agents, Michael Moran

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Software engineering projects that utilize inappropriate pathfinding algorithms carry a

significant risk of poor runtime performance for customers. Using social network theory,

this experimental study examined the impact of algorithms, frameworks, and map

complexity on elapsed time and computer memory consumption. The 1,800 2D map

samples utilized were computer random generated and data were collected and processed

using Python language scripts. Memory consumption and elapsed time results for each of

the 12 experimental treatment groups were compared using factorial MANOVA to

determine the impact of the 3 independent variables on elapsed time and computer

memory consumption. The MANOVA indicated a …

Impacts Of Observing Live Open Heart Surgery On Young Adults' Health Behaviors, Muhammad Musa Qarizadah Jan 2017

Impacts Of Observing Live Open Heart Surgery On Young Adults' Health Behaviors, Muhammad Musa Qarizadah

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Having a heart healthy lifestyle at a younger age is beneficial in reducing the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) in adulthood and various health education programs for CHD prevention exist to persuade young adults to adopt a heart healthy lifestyle. Little is known, however, about the influence of watching live open heart surgery on young adults' adoption of a heart healthy lifestyle. To address that gap in knowledge, this study was conducted at a health facility in Virginia where students came to observe live open heart surgery. The purpose of the study was to understand whether watching live open …

Government Identity Speech Programs: Understanding And Applying The New Walker Test, Leslie Gielow Jacobs Jan 2017

Government Identity Speech Programs: Understanding And Applying The New Walker Test, Leslie Gielow Jacobs

McGeorge School of Law Scholarly Articles

In Walker v. Texas Division, Sons of Confederate Veterans, Inc., the Court extended its previous holding in Pleasant Grove City, Utah v.Summum that a city’s donated park monuments were government speech to the privately proposed designs that Texas accepts and stamps onto its specialty license plates. The placement of the program into the new doctrinal category is significant because the selection criteria for government–private speech combinations that produce government speech are “exempt from First Amendment scrutiny.” By contrast, when the government selects private speakers to participate in a private speech forum, its criteria must be reasonable in light of the …

World Music And Activism Since The End Of History (Sic), Peter L. Manuel Jan 2017

World Music And Activism Since The End Of History (Sic), Peter L. Manuel

Publications and Research

While the decline of protest music in the USA has often been noted, a global perspective reveals that progressive, activist protest musics occupied lively niches in many music cultures worldwide (e.g., of Jamaica, India, Spain, Latin America) during similar periods, roughly the 1950s-80s. While on one level these music movements were embedded in particular socio-political movements, on a broader level they reflected an ardent commitment to the secular universalist ideals of the Enlightenment. The subsequent dramatic decline of all these protest musics—roughly since Fukuyama’s much-debated “end of history”—reflects a broader transformation of the global political climate. This transformation has both …

Finding Voice, The Body Speaks: Original Work And Counter-Hegemonic Performance And Practice, Matthew Paul Thornton Jan 2017

Finding Voice, The Body Speaks: Original Work And Counter-Hegemonic Performance And Practice, Matthew Paul Thornton

Theses and Dissertations

Graduate study in theatre has allowed me to understand my work as an artist and educator from a critical academic perspective. I have researched Butoh as a model for original work that employs multiculturalism against hegemonic control of personal identity. From my own training experience, I am recognizing Capoeira, Contact Improvisation, and Devising processes (co-creation or collaborative creative process in dance) as counter-hegemonic forms and techniques that share a physical/philosophical emphasis on communal engagement, improvisation, circularity and repetition. Looking at them together provides points of intersection for me to examine them as an artist, while posing questions for cross-cultural investigations. …

Immersive Theater & The Physical Narrative, Lauren Prisco Jan 2017

Immersive Theater & The Physical Narrative, Lauren Prisco

Theses and Dissertations

Immersive Theater is a form of experimental theater that places spectators at the heart of the created work, by removing them from the constraint of static seats and instead encouraging them to explore an installed environment as a way of understanding the narrative. This thesis explores how Interior Design directly enhances a performance by creating spaces that challenge a spectator’s physical understanding of a narrative.

David A. Epting Papers - Accession 1439, David Andrew Epting Jr. Jan 2017

David A. Epting Papers - Accession 1439, David Andrew Epting Jr.

Manuscript Collection

The David A. Epting Papers consist of David Epting’s correspondence, lecture, and teaching materials, rough notes, books, photographs, newspaper clippings, and artifacts. Most of the material pertains to Epting’s career and experience in the United States Navy, the Naval Reserves, in several colleges and universities, and the Second World War. Most notably is Epting’s correspondence which includes not only letters from him to his family during WWII but also letters to him from his family. His letters give a good picture of a young naval officer’s experience in the war. The letters from his family to Epting give a very …

For The Sake Of Consistency: Distinguishing Combatant Terrorists From Non-Combatant Terrorists In Modern Warfare, Alexander Fraser Jan 2017

For The Sake Of Consistency: Distinguishing Combatant Terrorists From Non-Combatant Terrorists In Modern Warfare, Alexander Fraser

Law Student Publications

This article aims to offer a solution for prosecuting terrorists consistently and efficiently in the ever-expanding world of modern warfare. It argues that our country's approach to prosecuting terrorists has been wildly inconsistent, and that clarity and consistency are required moving forward. The executive branch, which directs the path the Department of Justice and military take in these arenas, has been the main instigator of the inconsistency. The decision whether to prosecute foreign, non-citizen terrorists in an Article III federal court or military tribunal/commission has become politicized, allowing political winds to dictate policy, albeit an inconsistent, unprincipled one. The Bush …

Using Pre-Lecture Activities To Enhance Learner Engagement In A Large Group Setting, Gemma Kinsella, C. Mahon, S. Lillis Jan 2017

Using Pre-Lecture Activities To Enhance Learner Engagement In A Large Group Setting, Gemma Kinsella, C. Mahon, S. Lillis

Journal Articles

The disadvantage to students of beginning a module with no prior knowledge or inaccurate knowledge is well documented. For learners, the development of the necessary prior knowledge to facilitate their learning is essential. The use of screencasts, whether prior to or during class, is becoming more widespread. There is a need, however, to better understand how these are used and whether or not there is any impact on overall learner engagement and academic achievement when a component with instantaneous feedback (such as a multiple choice quiz) is embedded into the pre-lecture screencast activity. In this study, pre-learning activities consisting of …

Ex Parte Seizures Under The Dtsa And The Shift Of Ip Rights Enforcement, Yvette Joy Liebesman Jan 2017

Ex Parte Seizures Under The Dtsa And The Shift Of Ip Rights Enforcement, Yvette Joy Liebesman

All Faculty Scholarship

The ex parte seizure provision of the Defend Trade Secrets Act is another step in a long line of legislation that shifts the costs of private enforcement to the public, which already has a toehold in copyright and trademark law. The ex parte provision — which is not incorporated into any state trade secret law — relieves rights owners of two “burdens.” First, it relieves the trade secret owner of the burden of actually having to compete in the marketplace. Second, it relieves the trade secret owner of the burden of the costs associated with the discovery process of a …

Reflections On Leaking Men And Abject Masculinities: Challenging Representations Of Male Identity In And Through Body-Based Performance Art, Mark Andrew Flisher Jan 2017

Reflections On Leaking Men And Abject Masculinities: Challenging Representations Of Male Identity In And Through Body-Based Performance Art, Mark Andrew Flisher

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

Towards the end of the last century discussions on the representation of masculinity in male body-based performance art placed emphasis on the deconstruction of normative masculine identities. The focus of these investigations tended to position the image of masculinity within Lacan’s sexuation matrix, and as such, these representations were usually referred to as being phallic. That is, they reinscribed the behaviours, traits and characteristics of normative masculinity into the performance space. The central thrust of this practice-as-research thesis is that while some male artists deconstruct the performance of phallic masculinity, to challenge normative masculine ideologies, they often first reinscribe normativity …

An Evaluation Of Scenic Design, William Baxter Engle Iii Jan 2017

An Evaluation Of Scenic Design, William Baxter Engle Iii

Theses and Dissertations

“…Allow me to explain about the theatre business. The natural condition is one of insurmountable obstacles on the road to imminent disaster… Strangely enough, it all turns out well… I don’t know. It’s a mystery” -Tom Stoppard

I embraced this quote a long while ago in a moment of disgust and defeat while working through a flawed process of making theatre. Everything takes too long to complete, nothing works right the first time if ever at all, and ultimately the entire process is a maddening mess. It seems to me that the study and practice of the trade can work …

The Thought. The Force. The Love. The Joy. The Hope: An Ode To The Seldom Heard, Candace Thomas

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the methods used in creating my original solo performance piece entitled The Thought. The Force. The Love. The Joy. The Hope: An Ode To The Seldom Heard. I will describe in detail what specifically inspired the spine of my work, the research performed, the writing process, and how I hope it will grow in the future. Included in the body of the thesis is the script as it was performed on December 2nd thru December 4th, 2015 at the Center for Performance Experiment on the University of South Carolina campus in Columbia, South Carolina.

Faustus Revisited: A Cultural, Historical, And Artistic Study, Ryan Stevens Jan 2017

Faustus Revisited: A Cultural, Historical, And Artistic Study, Ryan Stevens

Theses and Dissertations

This study examines plays by Christopher Marlowe, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and David Mamet about Faustian figures. All three authors use the idea of a “deal with the devil” as an inspiration to examine human nature and hubris, but did so in distinct ways shaped by their personal styles, historical eras, and personal philosophies. By examining the common ground, and the areas of deviation, in these three plays separated by hundreds of years, this study will isolate and identify the key aspects of a Faustian Pact. Whereas Marlowe views Faustus as a rebel, whose fall from salvation comes due to …

Costume Design: Communication Through Dress, Rachel Amanda Harmon

Theses and Dissertations

Costume Design: Communication Through Dress represents my experience as a candidate in the University of South Carolina’s Master of Fine Arts program in Theatre Design, with an emphasis in Costume Design and Technology. During my time in this program, I worked closely with Professors Lisa Martin-Stuart and Nic Ularu to practice text and character analysis, rendering techniques, communication and the execution of designs from concepts on paper into three fully realized productions.

This thesis explores the design process behind three shows produced by the University of South Carolina’s Department of Theatre and Dance: Translations by Brian Friel, Blithe Spirit by …

The Hanging Of A Very Tall Man, Matthew Cavender Jan 2017

The Hanging Of A Very Tall Man, Matthew Cavender

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to illuminate and give context to the development, performance, and future evolution of The Hanging of a Very Tall Man. More specifically, within this document you will find the plays script, an apology for its somewhat bizarre conception, as well as a description of how it has grown, and how I hope for it to develop in the future. As opposed to some scholarly articles which are written with the intent to dissociate themselves from the reader in an attempt to adhere to some kind of imagined etiquette, this document has been written rather …

April 26th., Carin Bendas

Theses and Dissertations

April 26th. is a solo theatre piece that takes the audience on a journey through a few moments in the lives of seven Jewish individuals across space and time. It is inspired by the struggles and survival of the Jewish people throughout history, with special inspiration from the playwright’s Bubie and Zadie, Ruth and Morry Hecht.
