Modeling Variability In Pre-Columbian Woodland Habitation And Social Organization: The Brickhill Bluff Site, Cumberland Island, Georgia., Stephen Andrew Wise

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This thesis examines Woodland settlement patterns at the Brickhill Bluff site on Cumberland Island, Georgia. Aspects of Woodland habitation and social organization are not well understood along the Georgia coast. Using shell and artifact distribution data from excavations at Brickhill Bluff, this thesis attempts to discern how Woodland populations, specifically Deptford and St. Johns cultures, utilized the site between 1000 B.C. and A.D. 1000. This study also examines the efficacy of the midden typology already established for the South Atlantic Coastal Plain by statistically comparing the artifact assemblage from Brickhill Bluff to samples from sites used to develop this midden …

Moving Ever Forward: Reading The Significance Of Motion And Space As A Representation Of Trauma In Toni Morrison’S Song Of Solomon And Colson Whitehead’S The Underground Railroad, Samantha Richmond Jan 2017

Moving Ever Forward: Reading The Significance Of Motion And Space As A Representation Of Trauma In Toni Morrison’S Song Of Solomon And Colson Whitehead’S The Underground Railroad, Samantha Richmond

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This thesis argues that three models of trauma theory, which include traditional trauma theory, postcolonial trauma theory, and cultural trauma theory, must be joined to fully understand the trauma experienced by African Americans within the novels Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison and The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead. By implementing these three theories, we can see how each novel’s main character is exploring and learning about African American trauma and better understand how an adjustment of space and time creates the possibility for the implementation of trauma theory. Each novel presents a journey, and it is through this movement …

Nest-To-Surf Mortality Of Loggerhead (Caretta Caretta) Sea Turtle Hatchlings On Florida’S East Coast In 2016, Victoria Erb Jan 2017

Nest-To-Surf Mortality Of Loggerhead (Caretta Caretta) Sea Turtle Hatchlings On Florida’S East Coast In 2016, Victoria Erb

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Worldwide, sea turtles are especially vulnerable immediately after emerging from nests. Many monitoring programs measure hatchling production from nest inventories. These inventories rarely account for mortality occurring post-emergence, leaving an incomplete estimate of hatchling production. This study addresses the nest-to-surf data gap for Florida’s east coast nesting assemblages of loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta). Five locations were surveyed during the 2016 nesting season by using infrared time-lapse imagery, night vision optics, and track maps. Over all beaches, 7.6% of the observed hatchlings did not survive to reach the water. Mortality sources varied by location. Observed predators included: foxes, bobcats, yellow-crowned …

Narcissism Admiration And Rivalry Using Situation Research, Jamie Zahava Ramos Jan 2017

Narcissism Admiration And Rivalry Using Situation Research, Jamie Zahava Ramos

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Narcissism is a multidimensional construct consisting of many components and a variety of conceptualizations. One such example is the NARC conceptualization of grandiose narcissism and its two subcomponents admiration and rivalry. This research aims to answer three questions about the NARC conceptualization: (1) what is the relationship between narcissism and Big Six Personality dimensions?; (2) what is the relationship between narcissism and observable behavior?; and (3) how does narcissism relate to situational experiences in daily life? Results showed that, consistent with previous research, narcissism was related to Big Six personality. Additionally, narcissism was related to observable behavior. Finally, the results …

No Surrender: Bruce Springsteen, Neoliberalism And Rock And Roll’S Melancholic Fantasy Of Sovereign Rebellion, Kaitlin N. Graves Jan 2017

No Surrender: Bruce Springsteen, Neoliberalism And Rock And Roll’S Melancholic Fantasy Of Sovereign Rebellion, Kaitlin N. Graves

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This thesis builds from press accounts of Bruce Springsteen’s South by Southwest keynote address, taken by many to be a renewed call to arms of the classic mantras of the rock ethos in the age of a declining recording industry. In tracing the ways the speech circulated I argue that its discourse was rearticulated toward quite different (and concerning) ends. Throughout, I aim to show the apparatuses of power that sustains the rock liberation fantasy. I read the coverage of Springsteen’s address as a therapeutic discourse meant to soothe the anxiety over the closure of agency in the age of …

Olfaction And Exhibition: Assessing The Impact Of Scent In Museums On Exhibit Engagement, Learning And Empathy, Cory C. Mills Jan 2017

Olfaction And Exhibition: Assessing The Impact Of Scent In Museums On Exhibit Engagement, Learning And Empathy, Cory C. Mills

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The aim of this investigation is to analyze the effects of incorporating scent-based elements in ethnographic exhibits. Specifically, it attempts to identify changes in patron response to a visual display, with and without a scent element. Groups of patrons were observed throughout their engagement with the exhibit, and interviewed post-engagement to generate data on information retention, opinion on content and empathetic response in relation to the exhibit. Findings suggest that the inclusion of scent did increase memorization of the limited facts reinforced through the scent element. However, there was no detectable difference between the groups on measures of overall comprehension …

Optimal Energy Scheduling Of A Hybrid Microgrid Considering Environmental Aspects, Hadis Moradi Jan 2017

Optimal Energy Scheduling Of A Hybrid Microgrid Considering Environmental Aspects, Hadis Moradi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Lower costs of clean energy generation, the need for a more secure grid, and environmental concerns are leading to create more opportunities for integration of renewable energy resources utilization in the power systems. The recent concept of Microgrid (MG), as a part of the development of smart grid, is required in order to integrate the renewable sources in the utility grid. An MG is described as a small-scale distribution grid that consists of diversified Distributed Energy Resources (DERs), Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESSs), and local flexible loads that typically can either be operated in islanded or grid-connected modes. The optimal …

Perceived Risk And Consumer Adoption Of Service Innovations, Selen Savas Jan 2017

Perceived Risk And Consumer Adoption Of Service Innovations, Selen Savas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This study examines the influence of various facets of perceived risk on the attitudes toward really new services (RNS) and adoption intentions. Although there is considerable research examining perceived risk and consumer adoption of innovations, three aspects of the relationship have been neglected. First, much of the research on really new innovations is product-focused with little attention to services. Second, there is limited research examining perceived risk as a multidimensional construct. Third, consumer characteristics that affect the relationship between perceived risks and adoption intentions have not been included in most of the innovation studies. Thus, this study seeks to provide …

Plato And Shakespeare: The Influence Of Phaedrus And Symposium On A Midsummer Night’S Dream, Tahmina Begum Urmi Jan 2017

Plato And Shakespeare: The Influence Of Phaedrus And Symposium On A Midsummer Night’S Dream, Tahmina Begum Urmi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Many scholars who study Plato and Shakespeare together focus only on erotic love between lovers or nonsexual love between others. A closer study of A Midsummer Night’s Dream shows that Shakespeare uses Plato’s concepts of the soul in addition to the Forms, the guide, as well as staging the varieties of love that can exist between two individuals and the dangers of loving the physical more than the mind. Shakespeare takes these ideas embedded in Symposium and Phaedrus and not only crafts his play accordingly, but also creates his own versions through his unique interpretations. These alterations appear reflected in …

Plane-Wave Scattering Of A Periodic Corrugated Cylinder, Samuel Garcia Jan 2017

Plane-Wave Scattering Of A Periodic Corrugated Cylinder, Samuel Garcia

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

In this dissertation, a novel approach to modeling the scattered field of a periodic corrugated cylinder, from an oblique incident planewave, is presented. The approach utilizes radial waveguide approximations for fields within the corrugations, which are point matched to approximated scattered fields outside of the corrugation to solve for the expansion coefficients. The point matching is done with TMz and TEz modes simultaneously, allowing for hybrid modes to exist. The derivation of the fields and boundary conditions used are discussed in detail. Axial and radial propagating modes for the scattered fields are derived and discussed. Close treatment is given to …

Points Of Intersection Finding Connections Between Design, Science And Math, Christopher Kohlhagen Jan 2017

Points Of Intersection Finding Connections Between Design, Science And Math, Christopher Kohlhagen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Contemporary educational trends have created a false dichotomy between the arts and science. The will to make STEM subjects the focus of K-12 education, ignores both a shared history and the potential for greater learning in a shared future. The intention of Points of Intersection is to demonstrate that design, science and math intersect in their concepts, practices and history. In the past, these disciplines were explored and studied together and benefited from each other. By exploring what design and science have in common and the points where they intersect, we can see the relevance and importance of art and design …

Propulsive Performance And Maneuver Control Of Undulatory Ribbon Fin Propulsion Using Bio-Inspired Robotic Systems, Hanlin Liu Jan 2017

Propulsive Performance And Maneuver Control Of Undulatory Ribbon Fin Propulsion Using Bio-Inspired Robotic Systems, Hanlin Liu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Undulatory ribbon- n-based propulsion is an appealing propulsion mechanism due to its rich locomotor capabilities that can improve the propulsive performance and maneuverability of underwater vehicles. For instance, the swimming mechanics of weakly electric black ghost knife sh (Apteronotus albifrons) is of great interest to study because of their high swimming e ciency at low speeds and extraordinary agility such as rapid reversal swimming, hovering in presence of water disturbance, rolling and vertical swimming. In this thesis work, to facilitate our understanding on the exible undulatory ribbon n propulsion, we have four research motivations. The rst objective is to study …

Population Structure And Gene Expression Of The Coral Montastraea Cavernosa In The Northern Florida Reef Tract, Danielle Dodge

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Coral reefs on Florida’s Reef Tract (FRT) are susceptible to many anthropogenic influences including controlled freshwater discharges and agricultural runoff as well as high natural environmental variability from seasonal rainfall, runoff and upwelling. To better understand coral population structure and responses to sublethal stressors, populations of the scleractinian coral Montastraea cavernosa in the northern FRT were examined using a combination of genomic and transcriptomic techniques. Microsatellite genetic markers identified high local retention among sites and a slight southward gene flow. An in-situ temporal gene expression analysis utilizing a tag-based sequencing transcriptomic approach was used to analyze baseline coral health at …

Quasi-Local Energy Of Rotating Black Hole Spacetimes And Isometric Embeddings Of 2-Surfaces In Euclidean 3-Space, Shannon Ray Jan 2017

Quasi-Local Energy Of Rotating Black Hole Spacetimes And Isometric Embeddings Of 2-Surfaces In Euclidean 3-Space, Shannon Ray

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

One of the most fundamental problems in classical general relativity is the measure of e↵ective mass of a pure gravitational field. The principle of equivalence prohibits a purely local measure of this mass. This thesis critically examines the most recent quasi-local measure by Wang and Yau for a maximally rotating black hole spacetime. In particular, it examines a family of spacelike 2-surfaces with constant radii in Boyer-Lindquist coordinates. There exists a critical radius r* below which, the Wang and Yau quasi-local energy has yet to be explored. In this region, the results of this thesis indicate that the Wang and …

Relationship Between Anthropometric Measurements And Average Concentric Velocity In The Back Squat, Daniel M. Cooke Jan 2017

Relationship Between Anthropometric Measurements And Average Concentric Velocity In The Back Squat, Daniel M. Cooke

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The purpose of the present study was to investigate if any relationship exists between anthropometric measurements with average concentric velocity (ACV) at various intensities in the back squat and the number of repetitions able to be performed during a set to volitional fatigue at 70% of one-repetition maximum (1RM). It was hypothesised that short femurs and total height would be related to slower ACVs and lower total number of repetitions performed. 58 resistance trained subjects were recruited and attended one day of data collection. Subjects performed 1RM testing of the back squat followed by two single repetition sets at 30-90% …

The research found that science comprehension did not contribute significantly to increased risk perception and that political …

Relationship Between Psychological Factors And Acute Strength Task Performance, Michael H. Haischer Jan 2017

Relationship Between Psychological Factors And Acute Strength Task Performance, Michael H. Haischer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The purpose of this research was to investigate if various psychological wellbeing assessments can predict maximal strength performance and self-scored rating of perceived exertion (RPE) in the back squat. Fifty-eight resistance-trained males and females were recruited, and reported to the laboratory on one day. Subjects completed eight different scales and questionnaires before completing one-repetition maximum (1RM) testing of the squat, followed by two single-repetition sets at 30%, 40%, 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%, and 90% of 1RM, and a set to volitional fatigue at 70% of 1RM. Cognitive anxiety and hypersomnia were found to be positive and negative predictors (p<0.05), respectively, of 1RM performance. Further, self-confidence, grit, and perceived recovery status were significant negative predictors of RPE (p<0.05). Finally, PRS was discovered to be a positive predictor of subject-reported 1RM self-efficacy (b=0.39, t=3.14, p<0.01, R2=0.15).

Secure Communication By Coherence Modulation At The Photon Counting Level, Abdellatif Boughanmi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Secure communication is a topic of great importance. The goal of our research reported here is to develop a scheme of secure communication system using coherence modulation at the photon counting level. When operated at the photon counting level, coherence modulation can provide quantifiably secure binary transmission between two entities, security being based on the nonclonability of photons. The objectives of the research are as follows: Show that interferometer-based coherence modulation can provide physics guaranteed secure binary transmission where each bit is associated with a countable number of photons. Review the operation of conventional high-light-level coherence modulation communication and then …

Self-Organization Of Object-Level Visual Representations Via Enforcement Of Structured Sparsity In Deep Neural Networks, Daniel C Jr Lacombe Jan 2017

Self-Organization Of Object-Level Visual Representations Via Enforcement Of Structured Sparsity In Deep Neural Networks, Daniel C Jr Lacombe

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

A hypothesis for the self-organization of receptive fields throughout the hierarchy of biological vision is empirically tested using simulations of deep artificial neural networks. Results from many fields for topographic organization of receptive fields throughout the visual hierarchy remain disconnected. Although extensive simulation research has been done to model topographic organization in early visual areas, little to no research has investigated such organization in higher visual areas. We propose that parsimonious structured sparsity principles, that permit the learning of topographic receptive fields in simulated visual areas, are sufficient for the emergence of a semantic topology in object-level representations of a …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Two sympatric species of dolphins (Atlantic spotted dolphins, Stenella frontalis and Atlantic bottlenose dolphins, Tursiops truncatus) have been long-term residents to Little Bahama Bank. This study assessed whether there was a change in residence patterns or diurnal foraging depths of bottlenose dolphins following a large emigration event in the resident spotted dolphin community on this sandbank. Photo-identification was used to identify individual bottlenose dolphins and compare pooled years before (2010-2012) and after (2013-2015) the spotted dolphin emigration. The identified community size and overall residency of the bottlenose dolphins remained similar, although two bottlenose dolphins emigrated over deep water to the …

Sedentism, Agriculture, And The Neolithic Demographic Transition: Insights From Jōmon Paleodemography, Corey Noxon Jan 2017

Sedentism, Agriculture, And The Neolithic Demographic Transition: Insights From Jōmon Paleodemography, Corey Noxon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

A paleodemographic analysis was conducted using skeletal data from Jōmon period sites in Japan. 15P5 ratios were produced as proxy birth rate values for sites throughout the Jōmon period. Previous studies based on numbers of residential sites indicated a substantial population increase in the Kantō and Chūbu regions in central Japan, climaxing during the Middle Jōmon period, followed by an equally dramatic population decrease, somewhat resembling changes that occurred during a Neolithic Demographic Transition (NDT). The Jōmon are viewed as a relatively sedentary, non-agricultural group, and provided an opportunity to attempt to separate the factors of sedentism and agriculture as …

Smart Broadcast Protocol Design For Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks, Elnaz Limouchi Jan 2017

Smart Broadcast Protocol Design For Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks, Elnaz Limouchi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Multi-hop broadcast is one of the main approaches to disseminate data in VANET. Therefore, it is important to design a reliable multi-hop broadcast protocol, which satis es both reachability and bandwidth consumption requirements. In a dense network, where vehicles are very close to each other, the number of vehicles needed to rebroadcast the message should be small enough to avoid a broad- cast storm, but large enough to meet the reachability requirement. If the network is sparse, a higher number of vehicles is needed to retransmit to provide a higher reachability level. So, it is obvious that there is a …
