Decision-Making In The Selection Of Retrofit Facades For Non-Domestic Buildings, Helen Mary Garmston Jan 2017

Decision-Making In The Selection Of Retrofit Facades For Non-Domestic Buildings, Helen Mary Garmston

School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses

In the UK, boom periods of construction combined with typical building styles of the day, have resulted in a large stock of ageing office buildings at risk of structural vacancy and obsolescence. Despite their lack of insulation, high air infiltration, and solar gain, many such buildings from the 1960s-1970s are still in use today. Moreover, with UK buildings replaced at a rate of less than 2% a year, the majority of today's buildings will still be in use in 2050. Due to the impact of the facade on such aspects as thermal performance and aesthetics, façade retrofit is seen as …

This Is Where We Are - Collectively Living, Working And Being, With And Through Predictive Algorithms., B Aga, M Phillips

School of Art, Design and Architecture

‘This Is Where We Are’ (TIWWA) was an immersive and interactive algorithmic sculpture fuelled by the data we collectively generate. This collaborative work was created for the opening of the new Tate Modern Switch house in London in June 2016 by the i-DAT Research and Design Collective, Tate Collective London and Intercity. This technological fusion of interactive light and sound asked audiences to consider the data they generate and the algorithmic systems that increasingly mediate their reality and influence their behaviour. The creation of the sculptural artefacts and the digital systems driving them, were forged through interplay between data, algorithms …

Perceptions Of Risks And Barriers To Participation In Tourism For The Disabled, David M. A. Fraser Jan 2017

Perceptions Of Risks And Barriers To Participation In Tourism For The Disabled, David M. A. Fraser

Plymouth Business School Theses

There has been much research on the physical barriers that those with disabilities experience. This research investigates the level of participation of disabled people in tourism and explores the perceptions of risks and barriers to participation in tourism for people with a disability. The barriers that were explored included information, economic, social, physical barriers and the perceptions of risks these barriers cause, within the concept of the 'Social Model‘ of disability (Shaw and Coles, 2004). Data was gathered from a sample group of 149 disabled people through an online survey and through face-to-face survey using paper questionnaires. Analysis of the …

The Island Image: A Means Of Segmentation, Jennifer Jade Phillips Jan 2017

The Island Image: A Means Of Segmentation, Jennifer Jade Phillips

Plymouth Business School Theses

The success of tourism, at a destination, is often accredited to the strength of its marketing; yet, the marketing environment is changing at a fast pace where developments in digital technology have had a profound effect on marketing strategies. Furthermore, the increased accessibility of long and short haul travel has resulted in greater competition for tourist visits among destinations. Such changes present a challenge for cold water island destinations with a seasonal tourism product and limited resources for destination marketing. The ability of such destinations to adopt target marketing strategies, using meaningful segmentation criterion, is of great importance for their …

The Impact Of Culture, Leadership, And Power, On Staff Motivation In The Context Of International Organizations, Erdem Erciyes Jan 2017

The Impact Of Culture, Leadership, And Power, On Staff Motivation In The Context Of International Organizations, Erdem Erciyes

Plymouth Business School Theses

This thesis investigates the impact of culture, leadership, and power, on staff motivation in selected international organizations (IOs), and develops a theoretical framework to assist with the practice of workforce motivation. The main research question is: “How can supervisors motivate their staff in the context of IOs?” Utilizing critical theory as a paradigm of inquiry, the study’s philosophical perspective leans heavily on “phenomenology”. Conducting this research led to the realization that there are a few studies in the existing literature on this subject matter. After investigating grand theories, the meso theories which form the theoretical background of the research were …

Success And Failure Factors Of Foreign Direct Investment In Transnational Education, Ben Siu Jan 2017

Success And Failure Factors Of Foreign Direct Investment In Transnational Education, Ben Siu

Plymouth Business School Theses

This study identifies the success and failure factors of foreign direct investment in transnational education. With western tertiary education markets becoming more saturated, it becomes essential for higher education institutions (HEI) to pursue new and lucrative opportunities internationally. One approach to internationalisation is the establishment of international branch campuses (IBC). This method provides the highest level of control but incurs the most risk, and failure can result in irrecoverable damage to reputation and substantial loss of resources. A review of the literature shows that numerous facets should be considered when establishing an IBC, but there are limited studies that holistically …

Hernia Of Morgagni Presenting As Constipation In A 65-Year-Old Male, Hamza A Khan, Adeel Samad, Omar A Khan, Farida K Chagan, Jamal K Khan, Saulat H. Fatimi

Department of Surgery Docs

Hernia of Morgagni is congenital defects in the diaphragm. They are mostly asymptomatic and present with vague symptoms when they do so. A high index of suspicion is required for timely diagnose of this condition. Here we present the case of a 65-year-old male patient presented to our institute with constipation for the past six months. Chest radiology raised the suspicion of a hernia which was further confirmed by contrast studies. Laparotomy was done and the hernia sac identified, colon and greater omentum reduced and defect repaired. He was discharged in stable condition and was doing well on follow-up.

Nutritional Aspects Of Commercially Prepared Infant Foods In Developed Countries: A Narrative Review, Kate Maslin, Carina Venter Jan 2017

Nutritional Aspects Of Commercially Prepared Infant Foods In Developed Countries: A Narrative Review, Kate Maslin, Carina Venter

School of Nursing and Midwifery

AbstractNutritional intake during infancy is a critical aspect of child development and health that is of significant public health concern. Although there is extensive research on breast-feeding and timing of solid food introduction, there is less evidence on types of solid foods fed to infants, specifically commercially prepared infant foods. The consumption of commercially prepared infant foods is very prevalent in many developed countries, exceeding the consumption of homemade foods in some situations. Although these food products may have practical advantages, there are concerns about their nutritional composition, sweet taste, bioavailability of micronutrients, diversity of ingredients and long-term health effects. …

The Semiotics Of Minority Language Branding: A Study Of The Celtic Languages, J Tredinnick-Rowe Jan 2017

The Semiotics Of Minority Language Branding: A Study Of The Celtic Languages, J Tredinnick-Rowe

Peninsula Medical School

This paper investigates the role of minority language commodification in alcoholic drinks' branding, with a specific focus on Celtic languages and a particular emphasis on Cornish. The topic is introduced by exploring the ongoing and significant connection between language, culture and food, taking phrases and rhymes from historical sources and comparing their use. The aim is to establish cross-disciplinary synergies between semiotics and cultural analysis and to shed new light on marketing issues in the alcoholic drinks sector. The methodology section features the first ever analysis of alcoholic drinks' labels from four Celtic national minorities (N = 1.937) that illustrates …
