Characterization Of Internal Wave Activity In The Straits Of Florida, Soto Andrew Tarantul

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The Gulf Stream current in the Straits is typically dominated by a strong northerly current, associated shear, and eddies. The water column also includes a prominent thermocline and periodically features internal waves centered on the upper or lower edges of the thermocline. Despite numerous previous related studies, there is limited available field data on internal waves in the Straits of Florida. Here, study and analysis of velocity, temperature and conductivity data acquired in the Straits over a period of time are described, in support of identifying presence of internal waves in the flow. A systematic procedure is employed in modifying …

Nearly all organizational change literature incorporates interpersonal communication as an integral component in effective change efforts; therefore, the constantly changing higher education landscape necessitates presidents who are skilled in communicative leadership, …

Ethnicity, Gender And Pain Interference’S Influence On Depression Among Older Adults With Osteoarthritis, Jacinto J. Garrido Jan 2017

Ethnicity, Gender And Pain Interference’S Influence On Depression Among Older Adults With Osteoarthritis, Jacinto J. Garrido

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The leading cause of disability among older adults is osteoarthritis (OA) (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2017). Chronic pain associated with arthritis interferes with daily living among older adults and has been related to depression (Zanocchi et al., 2008). Research suggests that ethnicity and psychosocial factors may influence health outcomes of older adults with arthritis who are experiencing chronic pain and depression (Im, Guevara, & Chee, 2007; Wilson et al., 2014). The influence of ethnicity on depression among older adults with OA experiencing chronic pain is the phenomenon of interest for this study. Chronic pain that interferes with …

Magical Transformation Or Illusion Of Grandeur: The Development Of Downtown West Palm Beach, 1985-2015, Jeffrey G. Fine

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

From 1985 to 2015, local politicians like Kenneth G. Spillias, Jan Winters, and Nancy M. Graham reshaped downtown West Palm Beach. They promised to eliminate urban blight, and turned a crime-ridden area of the city into an upper-middle class entertainment zone frequented by wealthy pleasure-seekers from throughout Palm Beach County. However, much of this transformation was an illusion. These politicians eliminated local taxpayers from the decision-making process by circumventing their votes, but subsequently taxed them to pay for the improvements. Furthermore, blight was not eliminated downtown, merely relocated to areas surrounding the entertainment zone. This resulted in ongoing tension between …

Modeling Long-Term Changes, 1958-2011, In The Reproduction And Territory Dynamics Of Bald Eagles Of Florida Bay, Southern Coastal Everglades, Jason W. Bosley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

As top-level piscivores, Bald Eagles are a compelling subject for the study of territory dynamics and are highly representative of the distinctive suite of avian species that occupy Florida Bay. Despite successful recovery of Bald Eagles (Haliaeetus leuocephalus) throughout the species range, the population breeding within Florida Bay has not mirrored this trend. Beginning in the late 1980s, Florida Bay has suffered in its capacity to support species diversity and abundance as a result of extreme changes in hydrology related to altered flows of incoming freshwater. In fact, Bald Eagle territory use in Florida Bay has declined by as much …

Hackathons As Co-Optation Ritual: Socializing Workers And Institutionalizing Innovation In The “New” Economy, Sharon Zukin, Max Papadantonakis Jan 2017

Hackathons As Co-Optation Ritual: Socializing Workers And Institutionalizing Innovation In The “New” Economy, Sharon Zukin, Max Papadantonakis

Publications and Research

Hackathons, time-bounded competitive events where participants write computer code and build apps, have become a popular means of socializing tech students and workers to produce “innovation” despite little promise of material reward. Although they offer participants opportunities for learning new skills and face-to-face networking, and set up interaction rituals that create an emotional “high,” potential advantage is even greater for the events’ corporate sponsors, who use them to outsource work, crowdsource innovation, and enhance their reputation. Ethnographic observations and informal interviews carried out at seven public hackathons held in New York City during the course of a single school year …

From Slaves To Subjects: Forging Freedom In The Canadian Legal System, Nina Halty Jan 2017

From Slaves To Subjects: Forging Freedom In The Canadian Legal System, Nina Halty

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This thesis clarifies recent debates on the problems of territorialized freedom in the Atlantic world by examining several extradition cases involving runaway slaves in Canada, where southern slaveholders attempted to retrieve their lost property by relabeling fugitive slaves as fugitive criminals. In order to combat these efforts and receive the full protections of British subjecthood, self-emancipated people realized that they needed to prove themselves worthy of this status. To achieve this, black refugees formulated their own language of subjecthood predicated upon economic productivity, social respectability, and political loyalty. By actively working to incorporate themselves into the British Empire, Afro-Canadians redefined …

Home Range And Habitat Use Of Juvenile Green Turtlesin A Shallow Tidal Environment, Samuel Garcia Jan 2017

Home Range And Habitat Use Of Juvenile Green Turtlesin A Shallow Tidal Environment, Samuel Garcia

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

In this dissertation, a novel approach to modeling the scattered field of a periodic corrugated cylinder, from an oblique incident planewave, is presented. The approach utilizes radial waveguide approximations for fields within the corrugations, which are point matched to approximated scattered fields outside of the corrugation to solve for the expansion coefficients. The point matching is done with TMz and TEz modes simultaneously, allowing for hybrid modes to exist. The derivation of the fields and boundary conditions used are discussed in detail. Axial and radial propagating modes for the scattered fields are derived and discussed. Close treatment is given to …

Identifying Shallow Foundation Failure Modes And Mechanisms Using Surveillance Of A Transparent Granular Soil Surrogate, Denys W. Purdy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

A transparent soil model of granular fused quartz is developed to study the mechanics of shallow foundations. Soil models, unreinforced and reinforced, prepared at relative densities 0.34 (loose) and 0.64 to 0.69 (medium dense) are tested using a rectangular footing (25 mm wide x 40 mm long) under strain-controlled loading. Digital Image Correlation is used to identify displacements of a seeded central plane parallel to footing width (B) and construct vector fields and contour plots. Fiber-reinforced soil model data analysis is inconclusive. For the unreinforced medium-dense soil, minimum and peak magnitude horizontal displacements occurred directly under the footing at the …

You’Re It! Tag Jurisdiction Over Corporations In Canada, Tanya J. Monestier Jan 2017

You’Re It! Tag Jurisdiction Over Corporations In Canada, Tanya J. Monestier

Journal Articles

In September 2015, the Supreme Court of Canada released its decision in Chevron v. Yaiguaje, a case that legal commentators had been keeping an eye on for years. The Chevron case has spanned several decades as well as several continents, and the enforcement action in Ontario was the latest in a series of procedural moves aimed at enforcing a nearly $10 billion Ecuadorian judgment against the oil giant. In Chevron, the plaintiffs sought to have the judgment enforced in Ontario against both Chevron (the judgment debtor) and Chevron Canada (a seventh-level indirect subsidiary of the judgment debtor). The Chevron case …

Influence Of Soil Disturbance And Fire On The Distribution Of Caesar’S Weed (Urena Lobata) In Pine Flatwoods, Daniel Harrison Hagood

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Novel disturbances can increase the vulnerability of pine flatwoods to exotic species such as Caesar’s weed (Urena lobata), a plant that has invaded many ecosystems. To understand Caesar’s weed response to disturbance, a factorial field manipulation was used to quantify invasion success. Influence of feral swine (Sus scrofa) on the presence of seeds in the area was analyzed. The effect of heat on Caesar’s weed germination was also quantified. A winter fire and mechanical soil disturbance had no statistical effect on the spread of Caesar’s weed. However, in feral swine disturbed soils Caesar’s weed was more likely to be husked …

Brevetoxin Metabolism And Physiology - A Freshwater Model Of Morbidity In Endangered Sea Turtles, Courtney Christine Cocilova Jan 2017

Brevetoxin Metabolism And Physiology - A Freshwater Model Of Morbidity In Endangered Sea Turtles, Courtney Christine Cocilova

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The dinoflagellate Karenia brevis is one organism responsible for harmful algal blooms (HABs) that severely impact marine life. K. brevis produces a suite of neurotoxins referred to as brevetoxins (PbTx) which bind to voltage-gated sodium channels (VGSCs) in excitable tissues, affecting cellular permeability leading to a suite of symptoms and potentially cell death. Brevetoxicosis is difficult to treat in sea turtles as the physiological impacts have not been investigated and the magnitude and duration of brevetoxin exposure are generally unknown. Due to their threatened and endangered status, experimental exposures cannot be performed to determine the fate of brevetoxin in sea …

Since students can adjust the speed of online videos by time-compression which is available through common software (Pastore & Ritzhaupt, 2015), it is important to learn at which point compression impacts comprehension. The focus of the study is whether the speaker’s face benefits comprehension during a 50% compressed lecture. Participants listened to a normal lecture or a 50% compressed lecture. Each participant saw an audio and audiovisual lecture, and were eye tracked during the audiovisual lecture. A comprehension test revealed that participants in the compressed lecture group performed better with the face. Eye fixations revealed that participants in the compressed …

Contextual Modulation Of Competitive Object Candidates In Early Object Recognition, Mohammed F. Islam Jan 2017

Contextual Modulation Of Competitive Object Candidates In Early Object Recognition, Mohammed F. Islam

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Object recognition is imperfect; often incomplete processing or deprived information yield misperceptions (i.e., misidentification) of objects. While quickly rectified and typically benign, instances of such errors can produce dangerous consequences (e.g., police shootings). Through a series of experiments, this study examined the competitive process of multiple object interpretations (candidates) during the earlier stages of object recognition process using a lexical decision task paradigm. Participants encountered low-pass filtered objects that were previously demonstrated to evoke multiple responses: a highly frequented interpretation (“primary candidates”) and a lesser frequented interpretation (“secondary candidates”). When objects were presented without context, no facilitative effects were observed …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The majority of HIV prevalence is found in Sub-Saharan Africa with 36.9 mil- lion living with HIV/AIDS. The cultural implications such as patient non-compliance or denial of available routine medical care can potentially cause limitations on the ef- fectiveness of detecting such virulent pathogens and manage chronic disease. The lack of access to healthcare and further socioeconomic impacts hinder the ability to ade- quately diagnose and treat infection in resource-limited settings. Intervention through diagnosis and treatment helps prevent the spread of transmission, where pre-exposure prophylaxis or active disease prevention measures are not readily available. The cur- rent gold standard for …

Nutritional Aspects Of Commercially Prepared Infant Foods In Developed Countries: A Narrative Review, Kate Maslin, Carina Venter

School of Nursing and Midwifery

AbstractNutritional intake during infancy is a critical aspect of child development and health that is of significant public health concern. Although there is extensive research on breast-feeding and timing of solid food introduction, there is less evidence on types of solid foods fed to infants, specifically commercially prepared infant foods. The consumption of commercially prepared infant foods is very prevalent in many developed countries, exceeding the consumption of homemade foods in some situations. Although these food products may have practical advantages, there are concerns about their nutritional composition, sweet taste, bioavailability of micronutrients, diversity of ingredients and long-term health effects. …
