Background/aim: Clinicians associate the changes in cervical lordosis with neck pain, but there is no clear consensus on this. We aimed to investigate the relationships of cervical angles, neck pain, disability, and the psychological status of the patients with acute and chronic neck pain. Materials and methods: A total of 110 patients with neck pain were included in this study. Demographic and clinical characteristics of the patients were recorded. The lordosis angle was determined by the posterior tangent method. A visual analog scale (VAS), the Neck Disability Index (NDI), and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression (HAD) scale were administered to …

Background/aim: Helicobacter pylori is a pathogen that colonizes a majority of the world's population. Genetic diversity within the virulence genes of bacteria such as cagPAI and vacA may have a modified effect on the pathogenic potential of the bacteria. This study aimed to investigate which genes can be suggested as potentially related virulence factors for H. pylori-associated active chronic gastritis and stomach adenocarcinoma in the northwest of Iran and south of Turkey. Materials and methods: Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded stomach biopsy tissue samples were obtained from Iranian and Turkish patients from selected geographical regions. The prevalence of selected cagPAI genes and vacA …

Background/aim: Increased airway resistance reduces the effectiveness of ventilation treatment. Endotracheal tubes (ETTs) and connectors contribute to resistance. However, the effect of a closed system suction (CSS) connector is not well known. We compared the in vivo resistance occurring with a CSS connector with that of the standard connector. Materials and methods: This prospective study was conducted at Gazi University Hospital's neonatal intensive care unit. Intubated neonates were studied for two cycles; each cycle contained two periods of ETT + connector pairs (15 min/period) as follows: cycle 1 [A: long ETT + standard connector; B: long ETT + CSS connector] …

Background/aim: Septic shock is an important health problem that vastly alters cardiovascular and hemodynamic status. Increased production of nitric oxide (NO) and endothelin is a counterpart of this endotoxemic state. This study was conducted to test the hypothesis that nonselective NO synthesis blocker (L-NAME), inducible NO synthesis blocker (L-canavanine), or endothelin receptor antagonist (bosentan) will reverse the effects of sepsis on hemorheological parameters. Materials and methods: Forty-eight male Sprague-Dawley rats were used in 8 groups: saline (control), endotoxin, bosentan, L-NAME, L-canavanine, endotoxin + bosentan, endotoxin + L-NAME, and endotoxin + L-canavanine. Blood was withdrawn at the 4th hour of endotoxemic …

Sex-Related Differences In The Efficacy Of Dexamethasone Pretreatmentfor Postoperative Analgesia In Patients Undergoing Laparoscopiccholecystectomy: A Randomized Controlled Study, Choel Lee, Jae-Yoon Chung, Myeongjong Lee
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Sex-related differences in response to pain have become a topic of increasing interest. However, sex-related differences in the efficacy of dexamethasone for postoperative analgesia have not been previously addressed. Materials and methods: The study included 196 men and 196 women, aged between 18 and 45 years, who were scheduled for laparoscopic cholecystectomy. The patients were randomly allocated into dexamethasone (M/F: 98/98) and control (normal saline; M/F: 98/98) groups. Patients in the study group received intravenous dexamethasone at 0.1 mg/kg (dexamethasone group) 1 h before induction of anesthesia. Patients in the control group received normal saline. Changes in cumulative morphine-containing, …

The Comparison Of Various Disinfectants? Efficacy On Staphylococcus Aureus And Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Biofilm Layers, Hati̇ce Köse, Nur Yapar
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Because biofilms are resistant to antibiotics and biocides, they usually cause chronic persistent infections, which are arduous to cure and have high mortality and morbidity. Our study aimed to investigate the efficiency of orthophthalaldehyde, peracetic acid, hydrogen peroxide, and sodium hypochlorite on Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus biofilm layers and live microbial cells. Materials and methods: Biofilm layers were determined by crystal violet assay and live microbial cells were determined using a resazurin assay. Results: For Pseudomonas aeruginosa, sodium hypochlorite showed the most influential disinfection because it diminished 83.6% of the biofilm layer and decreased 99.7% of live microbial …

Background/aim: Our aim was to investigate the association of kinesiophobia with pain, quality of life, clinical measures, and depression in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS). Materials and methods: Patients with AS (n: 163) were enrolled in the study. Kinesiophobia was evaluated with the Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia (TSK), pain with a visual analog scale (VAS), mobility with Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Metrology Index (BASMI), disease activity with the Bath AS Disease Activity Index (BASDAI), functional status with the Bath AS Functional Index (BASFI), depression level with Beck's Depression Inventory (BDI), and quality of life with the AS Quality of Life Questionnaire …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: This study aimed to analyze EGFR, KRAS, and BRAF mutations in females with micropapillary predominant invasive lung adenocarcinoma and their relationships with immunohistochemical and clinicopathological patterns.Materials and methods: A total of 15 females with micropapillary lung adenocarcinoma were selected. Mutational analysis of the EGFR, KRAS, and BRAF genes was carried out. Information regarding the demographic data, tumor size, treatment, and survival time for each patient was collated, and the predominant cell type, secondary architectural growth patterns, psammoma bodies, necrosis, and visceral pleural and angiolymphatic invasions were evaluated. Results: We identified EGFR mutation in six cases, KRAS mutation in three cases, …

Evaluation Of Risk Factors For The Recurrence Of Colorectal Polyps And Colorectal Cancer, Öztürk Ateş, Bülent Si̇vri̇, Saadetti̇n Kiliçkap
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Colorectal adenomatous polyps are precursors of colorectal cancer (CRC), which can be prevented with surveillance colonoscopy. This study aimed to assess risk factors for the recurrence of colorectal polyps and CRC following polypectomy. Materials and methods: In this single-center trial, a total of 510 patients who applied to the endoscopy unit of Hacettepe University Hospital for various reasons and who were diagnosed with at least one colorectal adenomatous polyp between 2000 and 2010 were retrospectively analyzed. Patients with colorectal adenomatous polyps or CRC recurrences were examined in terms of clinical and histological risk factors. Results: A total of 190 …

Background/aim: Airway compression (AC) by vascular structures is an important complication of congenital heart disease (CHD) that often goes unrecognized. It is not easy to identify whether CHD patients require additional invasive examinations or not. Therefore, the present study aims to develop an AC diagnostic algorithm for CHD patients. Materials and methods: CHD patients with persistent respiratory symptoms that were treated between January 2007 and December 2015 were retrospectively reviewed. The following data were recorded for all CHD patients with AC: age, cardiac anomalies, the compressed structure, the airway diameter ratio (ADR), the compressing structure(s), treatment, and follow-up.Results: During the …
