Gender Equality And Authenticity: A Study Of Women In It Leadership, Samantha L. Dewalt Jan 2017

Gender Equality And Authenticity: A Study Of Women In It Leadership, Samantha L. Dewalt

Theses and Dissertations

This purpose of this dissertation is to understand how women senior leaders in the information technology (IT) industry experience leading with authenticity in the context of a male-dominated work environment. The IT industry has been unsuccessful in attracting and retaining women in leadership positions. For decades, women have faced challenges with gender biases in the workplace. Research has shown that in some predominantly male work environments, women experience pressures to conform to long-established norms in order to advance up the corporate ladder. Using a phenomenological methodology, this study examines how women describe their present perceptions of leading with authenticity in …

A Mixed Methods Study Of Online Course Facilitators' Perceptions Of Mobile Technology, Design, And Tpack Affordances, Helen Louise Teague

Theses and Dissertations

The increase in mobile technology options for students in post-secondary, continuing education influences how instructors design and implement courses, specifically online courses (Sözcü, İpek, & Kınay, 2016). There is limited research addressing the combination of TPaCK, design, and mobile technology from the course instructors’ perspective. The mixed methods study addressed design for online, mobile learning with a new layer of the TPaCK instructional framework in three phases. Virtual Civic Engagement: Exploring Technology, Secondary Social Studies, And Problem Based Learning With Tpack, Brett Schneider

Theses and Dissertations

Sociological and cultural analysts have noted the reticence of public secondary schooling to recognize and build academic activities around the participatory culture in which adolescents are so readily involved (Jenkins, Purushotma, Weigel, Clinton & Robison, 2009). Despite the Common Core State Standards having required students to demonstrate they can maximize technology to perform a range of skills involving targeted specialized research, organized writing, and visually intentional presentation (National Governors Association Center for Best Practices [NGA], Council of Chief State School Officers [CCSSO], 2010), very few classrooms have followed through. The avoidance and or failure of these educational technology integrations in …

Cyber-Harassment In Higher Education: A Study Of Institutional Policies And Procedures, Victoria Ann Schaefer-Ramirez

Theses and Dissertations

Cyberbullying is a growing phenomenon, causing concern among students, parents, and professionals in the educational community. Although no federal law specifically addresses cyber-harassment in higher education, institutions have a legal obligation to address all claims of harassment, regardless of the location or platform in which the harassing behavior occurs. Recent court cases are setting precedents for obligatory institutional response and potential penalties for lack thereof; conversely, institutions are left to their own devices to employ and develop policy statements and sanctions that prohibit or discourage cyber-harassment behaviors. As the legal and political environment regarding bullying and cyberbullying behaviors continues to …

Examination Of Oncology Summer Camp Attendance, Psychosocial Adjustment, And Perceived Social Support Among Pediatric Cancer Patients And Siblings, Jenna N. Oppenheim

Theses and Dissertations

Pediatric oncology patients and siblings are a population at-risk for negative psychosocial outcomes due to the various procedures, treatments, late effects, and family-based stressors associated with pediatric cancer. Pediatric oncology camps were designed to creatively address psychosocial gaps experienced by this steadily increasing population. Literature focusing on psychosocial adjustment of pediatric cancer patients and siblings is generally mixed or inconclusive, although there is some evidence suggesting increased psychosocial adjustment following camp participation. Research focusing on levels of perceived social support is limited. Although campers report social support as a main benefit of oncology camp participation, most studies are exploratory and …

Toward Better Discharge Decision-Making For Violent Offenders In Forensic Mental Health Settings: A Critical Analysis Of The Literature, Sara Laniado Jan 2017

Toward Better Discharge Decision-Making For Violent Offenders In Forensic Mental Health Settings: A Critical Analysis Of The Literature, Sara Laniado

Theses and Dissertations

Throughout the United States are institutions abundant with violent offenders who have been found not guilty by reason of insanity (NGI). The decision to release these insanity acquittees into the community is a vital one, both for the patient and the larger community. While these decisions should be informed by evaluations that combine clinicians’ opinions with validated tools of assessment, no standard of care regarding such evaluations exists. Forensic specialists are thus often left to base discharge decisions on clinical judgment alone. This dissertation assumed a critical review of the theoretical and empirical literature relevant to conditional release decisions of …

Early Identification Of Individuals At Risk For Psychosis: Recommendations For Colleges And Universities, Sylvia Lizette Lares

Theses and Dissertations

Psychotic disorders can instill a tremendous amount of distress on affected individuals (Srihari et al., 2014). Research has established that decreasing the duration of untreated psychosis can yield moderate improvements in the ultimate outcome of persons with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders (Gonçalves, de Rosalmeida Dantas, & Banzato, 2016; Reading & Birchwood, 2005). There exists a plethora of research directed at early identification of individuals at risk for psychosis within community-based settings (e.g., Johannessen et al., 2001; Power et al., 2007; Srihari et al., 2014). However, there have been limited efforts to generalize such endeavors to a college environment in the United States, …
