Understanding Business Education: Examining The Effect Of The Application Of Strategic Learning Among Diverse Business Disciplines, Dan Thoman
Doctor of Business Administration (DBA)
Strategic learning is an educational construct that evaluates the skill, will, and self-regulation of students across ten learning attributes to determine interventions that can improve overall academic achievement. If precisely implemented to a targeted grouping of students, these interventions can be generalized to achieve broader successful results in learning. Determining these groupings, therefore, is a necessary first step in applying this construct. Business discipline was identified as a possible method of categorizing business students in higher education for the purposes of more precisely applying the strategic learning construct. The purpose of this dissertation was to determine if the delineation of …

Mechanical Engineering Design Project Class
Each year the AIAA (American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics) hosts a design competition where college teams design and fly a small, remote-controlled, battery-powered airplane. For this competition, scoring primarily depends upon the following: maximizing payload, maximizing speed, minimizing weight, minimizing wingspan. Since wingspan is a key scoring factor and variable wing geometry is allowed, our design team has decided to design a pivoting wing system that can be remotely activated immediately before and after takeoff and landing respectively.

Bars are a great setting for friends to meet and drink however there aren’t many special features that set one bar apart from the rest. What you won’t find in any bar today is robotic bartender able to make any drink to order. In addition, there are many ways to make certain drinks, allowing for much variation. Automating the cocktail making process eliminates the variation in alcohol levels and in ingredients used. In addition, it guarantees that a customer’s drink will not have anything in it that the customer does not explicitly see. Giving the customer options of existing drinks …

Habitat Use Of Blacktip Sharks (Carcharhinus Limbatus) At Fishing Piers, Kelsey L. Spencer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Blacktip sharks (Carcharhinus limbatus) can be observed near fishing piers throughout the summer along the northeast coast of South Carolina. These piers attract and support a wide variety of potential prey and sharks are able to forage on fishers’ discards with minimal energetic cost. I tagged 12 blacktip sharks with acoustic transmitters, monitored piers with acoustic receivers, and conducted pier-creel surveys to determine the habitat use of blacktip sharks at fishing piers, factors that influenced residence time and presence/absence at piers, and any cyclical patterns in visits to piers. Data were analyzed with pier association indices (PAI), mixed models, and …

© 2017 Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature Quantification of vegetation cover from pollen analysis has been a goal of palynologists since the advent of the method in 1916 by the great Lennart von Post. Pollen-based research projects are becoming increasingly ambitious in scale, and the emergence of spatially extensive open-access datasets, advanced methods and computer power has facilitated sub-continental analysis of Holocene pollen data. This paper presents results of one such study, focussing on the Mediterranean basin. Pollen data from 105 fossil sequences have been extracted from the European Pollen database, harmonised by both taxonomy and chronologies, and …
Our Digital Legacy: An Archival Perspective, Michael S. Moss, Tim J. Gollins
Our Digital Legacy: An Archival Perspective, Michael S. Moss, Tim J. Gollins
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
Our digital memories are threatened by archival hubris, technical misdirection, and simplistic application of rules to protect privacy rights. The obsession with the technical challenge of digital preservation has blinded much of the archival community to the challenges, created by the digital transition, to the other core principles of archival science - namely, appraisal (what to keep), sensitivity review (identifying material that cannot yet be disclosed for ethical or legal reasons) and access. The essay will draw on the considerations of appraisal and sensitivity review to project a vision of some aspects of access to the Digital Archive. This essay …
Do Archives Have A Future In The Digital Age?, Ivan Szekely
Do Archives Have A Future In The Digital Age?, Ivan Szekely
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
The rapid development of information and communication technologies pose significant challenges to archival theory and practice. The analysis of the dominant information operators of the archival institutions in the respective paradigms of archival history shows that today’s internet-based services can replicate all the main functions of the archival institutions, at least at the level of the fundamental information operators, on a mass scale. Despite these developments, the author argues that archives are under no direct threat of abolition or loss of function in the digital age, not only because of institutional inertia and traditions, but also their role in preserving …

An Investigation Of The Alkali Metals In The Fcc Structure Using An Embedded-Atom-Method (Eam) Model, Marcus Jackman
An Investigation Of The Alkali Metals In The Fcc Structure Using An Embedded-Atom-Method (Eam) Model, Marcus Jackman
Physics Capstone Projects
Embedded-atom-method models have been used in the calculation and prediction of many vibrational and thermal properties of materials. In 2012 Wilson and Riffe constructed a model that predicts dispersion relations and frequency-moment Debye temperatures of the alkali metals with a greater degree of accuracy than previous models. The Wilson-Riffe model was implemented using MATLAB code. Here that model is extended to model alkali metals in the close-packed fcc structure. Code development is discussed, and results are presented for dispersion relations, density of states, Debye temperatures and free energy. The vibrational free energy combined with a suitable constant representing the electronic …

Increasing Student Registered Nurse Anesthetists Clinical Self-Efficacy Using Peer Mentoring, Megan Christine Bass
Doctoral Projects
The purpose of this project is to determine if clinical self-efficacy is increased in SRNAs at The University of Southern Mississippi after participation in the peer mentoring program. The project was a one-group pre and posttest design in a sample of SRNAs who received peer mentoring. To evaluate the students’ perceived clinical self-efficacy before and after the peer mentoring educational intervention, the Rowbotham and Schmitz Student Self-Efficacy scale (SSE) (2013) was adapted and administered to second-year SRNAs (N=17). Clinical performance, skill and knowledge development, social interaction with clinical faculty, and coping with clinical stress are the four areas evaluated by …
Implementing Computerized St-Segment Analysis Utilizing 5-Lead Ecg Cables During The Perioperative Period For Myocardial Ischemia Detection In Patients At Risk For Cardiovascular Disease, Lauren Robertson
Doctoral Projects
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is one of the leading causes of death in the United States (U.S.) annually (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2011). Mississippi has a disproportionately higher percentage of citizens likely to have CVD (Mississippi State Department of Health [MSDH], n.d.). The numerous stressors related to surgery are alone enough to increase the demand of the heart and lead to ischemia of the myocardium. Surgical stressors combined with preexisting CVD can exponentially increase the risk of ischemia. It is estimated that over a third of all surgical patients have ischemic heart disease. Puelacher et al. (2015) reported 40% …
Using Mixed Effects Modeling To Quantify Difference Between Patient Groups With Diabetic Foot Ulcers, Rachel French
Using Mixed Effects Modeling To Quantify Difference Between Patient Groups With Diabetic Foot Ulcers, Rachel French
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
When diabetes progresses, many patients suffer from chronic foot ulcers. In a study described in Matrix Metalloproteinases and Diabetic Foot Ulcers (Muller et al., 2008), sixteen patients with diabetic foot ulcers were examined throughout a twelve week healing period. During this period, levels of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP-1), their inhibitors (TIMP-1), and the extracellular matrix in a wound area were measured at distinct time intervals for each patient. The ratios of these healing components are vital in determining whether a wound will heal or become chronic and never properly heal. Connecting Local and Global Sensitivities in a Mathematical Model for Wound …

Using Thermography To Monitor Inflammation As A Non-Invasive Supplementary Diagnostic Tool For Mild Traumatic Brain Injury In A Sprague Dawley Rat Model, Sonja Anne Jensen
Theses and Dissertations
Incurring high economic cost due to medical imaging modalities, there is a need for a low-cost, on site, diagnostic screening tool for the early detection of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). We hypothesize that patients with TBI will exhibit temporal and spatial gradient dynamics in the thermal signature on the surface of the skin, and that these dynamics reflect the inflammatory process. Hence, we implemented far-infrared (FIR) thermography using a blunt TBI rat model to analyze changes in the external, surface temperature gradient as an indication of internal inflammation. Results show a consistent increase in average surface temperature after 0.5 days …

Understanding Sleep In Pediatric Patients With Sickle Cell Disease Admitted For Vaso-Occlusive Pain Crisis Through Objective Data, Kalindi Narine, Fan Yang, Tanvi Banerjee, Jude Jonassaint, Nirmish Shah
Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications
Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited red cell disorder that leads to sickling of red blood cells, anemia and vaso-occlusion. The most common reason for hospitalization and morbidity in children is pain due to vaso-occlusive crisis (VOC). Importantly, poor sleep quality can lead to increased pain the subsequent day and nocturnal pain leads to reduced deep sleep, both which can then modify pain sensitivity. Studies using sleep diaries have shown this cyclical relationship between sleep and pain. Frequent occurrences of restless sleep are therefore believed to contribute to an increased severity and intensity of pain episodes. There is very …
Second Law Analysis Of Dual Fuel Low Temperature Combustion In A Single Cylinder Research Engine, Hamidreza Mahabadipour
Second Law Analysis Of Dual Fuel Low Temperature Combustion In A Single Cylinder Research Engine, Hamidreza Mahabadipour
Theses and Dissertations
A detailed second law analysis of dual fuel LTC is not yet available in the open literature even though dual fuel low temperature combustion (LTC) has been studied before. To address this gap, a previously validated, closed-cycle, multi-zone, simulation of diesel-natural gas dual fuel LTC was used to perform a second law analysis. In the current study, a 2.4-liter single-cylinder research engine operating at a nominal load of 6 bar BMEP and 1700 rpm was used. Zone-wise thermodynamic irreversibilities as well as total cumulative entropy generated and lost available work over the closed cycle were quantified. Subsequently, two convenient second-law …
Micromechanical Modeling Of Shear Banding In Granular Media, Charles Clayton Goodman
Micromechanical Modeling Of Shear Banding In Granular Media, Charles Clayton Goodman
Theses and Dissertations
Shear banding is a commonly observed yet complex form of instability in granular media by which the deformation is localized in a narrow zone along a certain path. The aim of this study is to investigate the micromechanics of shear banding using the discrete element method (DEM). For this purpose, a model was developed and calibrated to simulate the macroscale behavior of sand under plane strain conditions. Upon validation against laboratory experiments, two types of confining boundaries, displacement- and force-controlled, were examined to study the kinematics of shear bands. A constant volume test was then used to investigate the evolution …

A program for December 2017 Problem Solving Initiative at the University of Michigan Law School on the topic of automated vehicle technology.
Implementing “Level 3” automation (i.e., the driving mode in which an automated driving system performs the driving task until the human driver is asked to take over) is a significant legal/regulatory, technological, and business challenge. Many issues are presented: How do we assess the costs and benefits of Level 3 automation? How does one address the car to human driver “handoff?” What type of licensing and training of the human driver should be required? What will prevent the …
