The Gonotrophic-Age Structure Of A Population Of The Simulium Venustum Complex (Diptera: Simuliidae) In Algonquin Park, Ontario, Stephen M. Smith, Alan Hayton Dec 2017

The Gonotrophic-Age Structure Of A Population Of The Simulium Venustum Complex (Diptera: Simuliidae) In Algonquin Park, Ontario, Stephen M. Smith, Alan Hayton

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Eight techniques for the determination of parity and gonotrophic age were assessed for the obligatorily anautogenous blackfly-species complex, Simulium venustum Say. All females could be age-graded by the presence or absence of dilatations on the ovarioles. However, multiple dilatations on a single ovariole were not found and the Polovodova method could not be used to determine the number of completed gonotrophic cycles. Most females could be age-graded by the appearance of the Malpighian tubules, which undergo morphological changes, probably as a result of a bloodmeal. In some cases, the size of the fat body, the presence of retained (relict), mature …

Survey Of Predators Associated With European Red Mite (Panonychus Ulmi; Acari: Tetranychidae) In Ohio Apple Orchards, Celeste Welty

The Great Lakes Entomologist

A survey was conducted to identify the types and relative abundance of predatory arthropods associated with Panonychus ulmi in 21 Ohio apple orchards. Mite populations were sampled by leaf brushing, and insects and spiders were sampled by limb jarring. A state-wide survey was conducted in early July and in late August 1992, and five blocks were evaluated periodically from May until August 1992 at one farm in central Ohio. Predatory mites were detected in only 27% of the blocks surveyed in early July, but in 74% of the blocks surveyed in late August. The ratio of predatory mites to motile …

Swarming And Mating In Aedes Provocans (Diptera: Culicidae), Stephen M. Smith, Randy M. Gadawski Dec 2017

Swarming And Mating In Aedes Provocans (Diptera: Culicidae), Stephen M. Smith, Randy M. Gadawski

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Male Aedes provocans formed canopy-level linear swarms in association with prominent trees along hedgerows or convex prominences along woodlot margins. Males oriented along the east-west or north-south axis of the swarm site and flew continuously in alternating directions along the longitudinal axis of the swarm. Swarming began shortly before (mean=-0.78 crep) and ended after sunset (mean=0.81 crep). The time of onset of swarming was more variable than the time of cessation; on 3 of 5 occasions, swarming stopped abruptly at 0.94 crep, about 2 minutes before the end of civil twilight. Swarming began 4 d after the onset of emergence …

The Age Structure Of A Population Of Aedes Provocans (Diptera: Culicidae) In Southwestern Ontario, Stephen M. Smith, Richard M. Kurtz Dec 2017

The Age Structure Of A Population Of Aedes Provocans (Diptera: Culicidae) In Southwestern Ontario, Stephen M. Smith, Richard M. Kurtz

The Great Lakes Entomologist

In a previous paper it was shown that an eastern-Ontario population of the early-spring mosquito Aedes provocans had an atypical age structure: the adult-female population aged rapidly and synchronously, achieving an advanced gonotrophic age in an unusually brief period of time. The present study examined the age structure of Ae. provocans near Waterloo, in south-western Ontario, at a site at which adult emergence occurred over a wider, more variable period and at which the preferred nectar sources for young adults were much less abundant. In Waterloo, the adult-female population aged more slowly and much less synchronously than in eastern Ontario. …

Prediction Models For Flight Activity Of The Cranberry Girdler (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) In Wisconsin, Stephen D. Cockfield, Daniel L. Mahr Dec 2017

Prediction Models For Flight Activity Of The Cranberry Girdler (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) In Wisconsin, Stephen D. Cockfield, Daniel L. Mahr

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Cranberry girdler, Chrysoteuchia topiaria, was monitored with pheromone traps in Wisconsin cranberry farms. Cumulative 50% capture was related to degree-days after first catch using air or soil temperature. An air temperature of O°C and soil temperature of 2°C were chosen as base temperatures for calculation of degree-days because they yielded estimates with the lowest coefficients of variation. Weibull functions were fitted to the relation- ship between cumulative percent capture and time or degree-days after first trap catch using air or soil temperatures. The models that predicted the date of 50% capture were evaluated with data from two other farms. …

The Myths And Realities Of Generational Cohort Theory On Ict Integration In Education: A South African Perspective, Keshnee Padayachee Dec 2017

The Myths And Realities Of Generational Cohort Theory On Ict Integration In Education: A South African Perspective, Keshnee Padayachee

The African Journal of Information Systems

There is an assumption that the younger cohort of teachers who are considered to be digital natives will be able to integrate technology into their teaching spaces with ease. This study aims to determine if there is a difference between generational cohorts with respect to ICT (Information Communication Technology) integration in classrooms among South African teachers. There is a paucity of research on ICT integration in education with respect to generational cohorts. This study involved a secondary analysis of two primary data sets, which contained qualitative and quantitative data. The quantitative data revealed that there are few statistical differences between …

Mitochondrial Dynamics And Respiration Within Cells With Increased Open Pore Cytoskeletal Meshes, David H. Jang, Sarah C. Seeger, Martha E. Grady, Frances S. Shofer, David M. Eckmann Dec 2017

Mitochondrial Dynamics And Respiration Within Cells With Increased Open Pore Cytoskeletal Meshes, David H. Jang, Sarah C. Seeger, Martha E. Grady, Frances S. Shofer, David M. Eckmann

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

The cytoskeletal architecture directly affects the morphology, motility, and tensional homeostasis of the cell. In addition, the cytoskeleton is important for mitosis, intracellular traffic, organelle motility, and even cellular respiration. The organelle responsible for a majority of the energy conversion for the cell, the mitochondrion, has a dependence on the cytoskeleton for mobility and function. In previous studies, we established that cytoskeletal inhibitors altered the movement of the mitochondria, their morphology, and their respiration in human dermal fibroblasts. Here, we use this protocol to investigate applicability of power law diffusion to describe mitochondrial locomotion, assessment of rates of fission and …

Classical Literature Gives Life To Business Paradox And Systems Integration, Robert A. Page, Samuel K. Andoh, Robert A. Smith Dec 2017

Classical Literature Gives Life To Business Paradox And Systems Integration, Robert A. Page, Samuel K. Andoh, Robert A. Smith

Administrative Issues Journal

Professors bemoan the great difficulty students have understanding the complexity of their disciplines or functional specializations. Many non-traditional students have work and family commitments that limit the time needed to reflect professionally and to master these concepts. This disconnect has persisted despite decades of work developing more integrated, interdisciplinary curricula. One potential, partial solution is to simply start sooner and partner with liberal arts courses to introduce business students to complexity and paradox before they arrive at the business school. Grounding these concepts in the Classics embeds them in great stories of passion, betrayal, commitment, and emotion normally absent in …

Quality Improvement In Provider Attitudes Towards Adherence To Comprehensive Diabetic Care Hedis Standards, Samantha Taylor Dec 2017

Quality Improvement In Provider Attitudes Towards Adherence To Comprehensive Diabetic Care Hedis Standards, Samantha Taylor

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Final Clinical Projects, 2016-2019

Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS) is a quality measurement for standard of care used to rate a health plan or provider's ability to demonstrate clinical effectiveness. Medicare Advantage healthcare plan utilizes HEDIS as a guide for standard of care. Adherence to HEDIS is useful in decreasing chronic disease burden through preventative measures. Diabetes, a disease with high burden, has Comprehensive Diabetes Care HEDIS standards that specifically target providers. Increasing adherence to HEDIS measures is shown to significantly improve health outcomes when used with evidence-based guidelines. The literature shows having high HEDIS scores are not an incentive to adhere …

The Impact Of Student Leadership Engagement On Meaning In Life And Work During College, Heather Janel Strine-Patterson

Dissertations, 2014-2019

The rising need, cost, and debt for postsecondary education has increased attention and scrutiny on its value, and colleges and universities must underscore outcomes beyond employment of graduates. Psychological well-being is a promising area to expand the value of postsecondary education. Using correlations, multiple regression, and multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA), this study seeks to contribute to an emergent body of empirical knowledge about the impact of postsecondary education on students’ well-being by specifically examining the relationship between participation in cocurricular and extracurricular experiences and students’ well-being defined by their sense of meaning in life and work. To this end, …

Authentic Leadership—Is It More Than Emotional Intelligence?, Phyllis Duncan, Mark Green, Esther Gergen, Wenonah Ecung Dec 2017

Authentic Leadership—Is It More Than Emotional Intelligence?, Phyllis Duncan, Mark Green, Esther Gergen, Wenonah Ecung

Administrative Issues Journal

One of the newest theories to gain widespread interest is authentic leadership. Part of the rationale for developing a model and subsequent instrument to measure authentic leadership was a concern that the more popular theory, the full range model of leadership and its instrument, the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) (Bass & Avolio, 1985), did not sufficiently emphasize aspects of leader emotional intelligence (EI), such as self-awareness (Avolio & Gardner, 2005).

In its current configuration, the Authentic Leadership Questionnaire (ALQ) (Walumba, Avolio, Gardner, Wernsing & Peterson, 2008) measures four dimensions of leadership: relational transparency, internal moral perspective, balanced processing, and self-awareness. …

Assessing Morphological Deformities In Cetaceans: Definition Of Patterns And Quantification With A Case Study (Madeira Island, Ne Atlantic), Erich Dietterle Dec 2017

Assessing Morphological Deformities In Cetaceans: Definition Of Patterns And Quantification With A Case Study (Madeira Island, Ne Atlantic), Erich Dietterle

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

Documenting deformities in cetaceans can lead to understandings in the health of the populations, but also the state of ocean and human health in an area. Deformities like skin lesions can lead to information about local pollution levels or possible diseases, while physical impacts can give insight into vessel traffic or fishing gear entanglement information. Cetaceans encounter threats like vessel strikes and fishing gear entanglements worldwide, but less obvious activities like whale watching or pollution can also have impacts. Studies have been conducted worldwide and around the Madeira Archipelago to document deformities, but there are various descriptions for what is …

Improving Early Sepsis Identification On Inpatient Units, Eva M. Diaz

Master's Projects and Capstones

Sepsis is a medical emergency resulting from an infection. Its systemic effects can quickly lead to death if it is left untreated. The condition is extremely costly in regard to human life and national healthcare costs. In an effort to combat rising rates of sepsis effective protocols must be implemented into hospitals. Assessments were performed to ascertain the level of nursing knowledge regarding sepsis criteria, treatment, and hospital protocol. A microsystem assessment was performed using the Five Ps Assessment Tool, which addresses purpose, patients, professionals, processes, and patterns. A root cause analysis (RCA) helped identify factors affecting adherence to the …

The intention of this quality improvement project is to improve the process of staff development in a 16-bed, acute rehabilitation unit by implementing a mentor-based orientation program. Rehabilitation nursing is a specialty that requires knowledge of the rehab philosophy and milieu. The lack of a rehab-specific educational component of the orientation process causes the new nurses anxiety and dissatisfaction which negatively impacts nurse retention. The project aims to improve the confidence and competence of new nurses, decrease nurse turnover rate, and increase nurse retention by providing a rehab-specific, orientation class. The MiRehab booklet and a PowerPoint presentation were …

Phonological Awareness And Foreign Accent: A Handbook For German Efl Teachers, Kerstin Menzer Dec 2017

Phonological Awareness And Foreign Accent: A Handbook For German Efl Teachers, Kerstin Menzer

Master's Projects and Capstones

Foreign accent, or the deviation from non-native speech, has a direct impact on communication and may even result in undesirable consequences for the speaker. Instead of perceiving statements as more difficult to understand, native speakers often perceive them as less trustworthy. However, the pronunciation of adult second language (L2) learners is extremely difficult to change, and L2 native-like pronunciation is rarely achieved after early childhood. The latest research suggests that explicit instruction about phonological awareness can contribute to better spoken comprehensibility even in adult L2 learners. There is a direct relationship between the L2 learners’ language awareness and the quality …

Interdisciplinary Team Approach In Fall Prevention: Physician Perspective Focus, Anna Gryn Dec 2017

Interdisciplinary Team Approach In Fall Prevention: Physician Perspective Focus, Anna Gryn

Master's Projects and Capstones

An in-hospital fall is a devastating event for patients and care providers resulting in injuries, physiological and psychological patient declines, and sometimes deaths. Furthermore, fall related costs greatly increase hospitals’ expenses and cause massive distress to caregivers and health providers. Many patient-specific, organizational, and seemingly erratic factors contribute to the occurrence of in-hospital falls. Despite this, hospitals must undertake consistent evidence-based measures to prevent fall occurrences as much as possible.

The traditional nursing approach to falls prevention is not sufficient to control fall rates because the issue is too complex and must be approached from multiple perspectives rather than just …

Network Structures As A Way To Build A Global Organization And The Role Of Modern It Tools, Jerzy Kisielnicki Dec 2017

Network Structures As A Way To Build A Global Organization And The Role Of Modern It Tools, Jerzy Kisielnicki

European Management Studies

The subject of the article is an analysis of network organizational structures as part of the organizational management system. The considerations are illustrated in practical examples: System Information Science and Technology (design SYNAT) and the analysis of changes in the company Bayer CropScience (BCS). Changes in management systems are due to the need to transform hierarchical systems. The direction of change is the global creation of global organizations. In management, we observe the transition from centralized hierarchical structures to decentralized network structures. The paper argues that the construction of global organizations requires the use of network management structures in them, …
