Investigation Of Use Of Slag Aggregates And Slag Cements In Concrete Pavements To Reduce The Maintenance Cost, Kho Pin Verian, Parth Panchmatia, Jan Olek
JTRP Technical Reports
The air-cooled blast furnace slag (ACBFS), the by-product of the pig iron making process, is often used as coarse aggregate in portland cement concrete (PCC) pavements, especially in the areas located in the vicinity of the iron mills. The utilization of this by-product as an aggregate in concrete offers environmental and economic benefits in the form of elimination of waste, decrease in the disposal costs, and reduction in need for mining of the natural materials. However, concerns exist with relation of the influence of these aggregates on the long-term durability of pavement concretes, especially at locations exposed to freezing and …

Strategic Scheduling Of Infrastructure Repair And Maintenance: Volume 1—Decision Tree For Steel Bridge Painting, Bismark R. Agbelie, Jon D. Fricker, Samuel Labi, Kumares C. Sinha
JTRP Technical Reports
Even for the right treatment, improper timing can have consequences: premature application (treatment is applied too early) could mean wasteful spending even if users enjoy the benefits of higher pavement condition; deferred or delayed application (treatment is applied too late) could result in higher user costs due to poor condition and even reduced asset longevity.
The objectives of this research were to establish the optimal condition or timing for each of the standard M&R treatment types typically used by INDOT; quantify the consequences of departures from such optimal conditions or timings; and to establish the optimal M&R treatment schedule for …

Simon Didn't Say: When Reconstruction Of A Private Search Goes Awry Under The Private Search Doctrine, John G. Chambers
Simon Didn't Say: When Reconstruction Of A Private Search Goes Awry Under The Private Search Doctrine, John G. Chambers
Georgia Law Review
A privateparty conducting an unreasonablesearch of an
individual need not fear the Fourth Amendment as the
proscriptions therein are applicable against only the
government. The government, however, need not fear the
Fourth Amendment where it replicates that private party's
unreasonable search. As such, the Fourth Amendment is
not offended where the government directs the private
party to "reconstruct" its initial search. This
reconstruction doctrine breeds many questions in
application, particularly in the digital context. In
grappling with these questions, this Note demonstrates
that the current law provides no satisfying answers. It
proposes a new test to assess reconstructed private party …
The Grand Jury: A Shield Of A Different Sort, R. M. Cassidy, Julian A. Cook Iii
The Grand Jury: A Shield Of A Different Sort, R. M. Cassidy, Julian A. Cook Iii
Georgia Law Review
According to the Washington Post, 991 people were shot to
death by police officers in the United States during calendar year
2015, and 957 people were fatally shot in 2016. A
disproportionate percentage of the citizens killed in these police-
civilian encounters were black. Events in Ferguson, Missouri;
Chicago, Illinois; Charlotte, North Carolina; Baton Rouge,
Louisiana; and Staten Island, New York-to name but a few
affected cities-have now exposed deep distrust between
communities of color and law enforcement. Greater transparency
is necessary to begin to heal this culture of distrust and to inform
the debate going forward about police practices …

"The overwhelming evidence from
different fields of study indicates that our high school students are not too young to research. One such study — “Scientific Thinking in Young Children: Theoretical Advances, Empirical Research, and Policy Implica - tions” — was reported by Science magazine in 2012 by Professor Alison Gopnik of the University of California, Berkeley. These studies all confirm the “ole folks tales” about the inquisitive, forever questioning and curious nature of young children. Indeed, about 400 years ago in 1620, the reputed father of the scientific method, Francis Bacon, wrote in Novum Organum that we “must become as …

The neutron-capture reaction is fundamental for identifying and analyzing the γ-ray spectrum from an unknown assembly because it provides unambiguous information on the neutron-absorbing isotopes. Nondestructive-assay applications may exploit this phenomenon passively, for example, in the presence of spontaneous-fission neutrons, or actively where an external neutron source is used as a probe. There are known gaps in the Evaluated Nuclear Data File libraries corresponding to neutron-capture γ-ray data that otherwise limit transport-modeling applications. In this work, we describe how new thermal neutron-capture data are being used to improve information in the neutron-data libraries for isotopes relevant to nonproliferation applications. We …

Socioeconomic Challenges In The Household And The Prevalence Of Comorbidity Among Children With Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Randy Lee Perrin
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), the most commonly diagnosed childhood neurobehavioral disorder, is increasing annually at about 5% per year. ADHD has been diagnosed in approximately 6.4 billion children in the U.S., and it is estimated that 66% of those afflicted have 1 or more comorbid conditions. Children with ADHD are often from socioeconomically challenged households. What is unclear from the literature is the relationship between socioeconomic status (SES), defined as education, employment, and income and the reporting of comorbidities with ADHD. The problem is that children with ADHD from low SES households may be reporting a higher prevalence of comorbid …

Geospatial Analysis Of Spatial Patterns Of U.S. Hospital Readmission Rates, Yamei Wang
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Unplanned hospital readmission after a recent hospitalization is an indication of poor healthcare quality and a waste of healthcare resources. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) initiated the Hospital Readmission Reduction Program (HRRP) to improve healthcare quality and reduce costs; however, studies found the risk adjustment method used in calculating the standardized readmission rate was less accurate without hospital region or community factors. Accordingly, this cross-sectional quantitative study was designed to examine spatial patterns in hospital readmission rates following Andersen's behavioral model of health service utilization. This study was the first geospatial analysis on risk standardized hospital readmissions …
