An Intelligent, Fast-Acquisition Remote Sensing System For Locating And Measuring Burial Of Subsea Power And Telecommunication Cables, Tomasz Szyrowski
An Intelligent, Fast-Acquisition Remote Sensing System For Locating And Measuring Burial Of Subsea Power And Telecommunication Cables, Tomasz Szyrowski
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
This thesis describes novel methods to localise and estimate the burial depth of subsea cables. The limitation of the current methods is that they can measure the distance to the cable only in a small vicinity, usually up to three metres. The enhancements of the methods were investigated. The output from Neural Network algorithms was tested for its ability to enlarge the detection range and increase its precision. Following traditional methods, a new approach based on system identification and modelling was inspected. Various models were proposed and enhanced with Kalman filtering for linear models and unscented Kalman filtering for nonlinear …
Authenticity And Quality Of Muscle Foods: Assessing Consumer Trust And Fraud Detection Approaches, Salih Mustafa Salih
Authenticity And Quality Of Muscle Foods: Assessing Consumer Trust And Fraud Detection Approaches, Salih Mustafa Salih
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Authenticity issues and fraudulent practices regarding animal products are affecting consumer confidence. Verifying the description, composition, processing or origin of foods can be challenging. To explore British and Kurdish consumers’ perceptions of kebab meat products, focus groups and questionnaire surveys were applied. About 40% of participants in the UK tend to purchase fewer processed meats after the European horsemeat scandal. Issues raised by participants indicated their concerns about the declaration of species, meat content, and other ingredients incorporated in kebab and other meat products. Lack of consumer trust has been linked to authenticity issues. Reactions towards the addition of fat-replacing …
Beach Morphodynamics In The Lee Of A Wave Farm: Synergies With Coastal Defence, Javier Abanades Tercero
Beach Morphodynamics In The Lee Of A Wave Farm: Synergies With Coastal Defence, Javier Abanades Tercero
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Wave energy has a great potential in many coastal areas thanks to a number of advantages: the abundant resource, the highest energy density of all renewables, the greater availability factors than e.g. wind or solar energy; and the low environmental and particularly visual impact. In addition, a novel advantage will be investigated in this work: the possibility of a synergetic use for carbon-free energy production and coastal protection. In this context, wave energy can contribute not only to decarbonising the energy supply and reducing greenhouse emissions, but also to mitigating coastal erosion. In effect, wave farms will be deployed nearshore …

A Study Of The Potential Applications Of Am241, And Determining The Feasibility Of Using Gamma Spectroscopy For Future Physical Validation, Eric A. Feissle
Masters Theses
“Am241 is typically produced via Pu241 decay in a uranium fueled reactor. Presence of Am241 can be used as the age estimation tool for spent fuel, which is a focus of this thesis along with the interest of the measurement and the ratio of production rates of Am241’s activation products; Americium-242 and its first excited state of Americium-242m. MCNP models of the core and BEGe 3825 detector were built. These models were compared with established and physical measurements of gamma/x-ray standards that were available at the reactor. Thermal fluxes at 200 kW for potential foils centered in the source holder …
An Investigation Of Borax For Sealing Inflow From Berea Sandstone, Tri-Tris Bao Nguyen
An Investigation Of Borax For Sealing Inflow From Berea Sandstone, Tri-Tris Bao Nguyen
Masters Theses
"Well inflow control is a major challenge for the oil and gas industry. Erle Haliburton revolutionized well inflow control with his patent for cementing oil wells in 1921. Soon after, cement became the accepted material to establish well integrity and has been ever since. Cement is used in all phases of the well life cycle, and it is expected to hold indefinitely once set. Yet based on the nature of cement and the placement techniques, flow pathways may develop from improper cementing jobs or from cement degradation over time. Well integrity is especially crucial for wellbore plugging and abandonment, since …

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This study synthesized pure anatase carbon doped TiO2 photocatalysts supported on a stainless-steel mesh using a sol-gel solution of 8% polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/dimethylformamide (DMF)/TiCl4. The influence of the pyrolysis temperature and holding time on the morphological characteristics, particle sizes and surface area of the prepared catalyst was investigated. The prepared catalysts were characterized by several analytical methods: high resolution scanning electron microscopy (HRSEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The XRD patterns showed that the supported TiO2 nanocrystals are typically anatase, polycrystalline and body-centered tetragonal in structure. The EDS and XPS results …
Decision-Making In The Selection Of Retrofit Facades For Non-Domestic Buildings, Helen Mary Garmston
Decision-Making In The Selection Of Retrofit Facades For Non-Domestic Buildings, Helen Mary Garmston
School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses
In the UK, boom periods of construction combined with typical building styles of the day, have resulted in a large stock of ageing office buildings at risk of structural vacancy and obsolescence. Despite their lack of insulation, high air infiltration, and solar gain, many such buildings from the 1960s-1970s are still in use today. Moreover, with UK buildings replaced at a rate of less than 2% a year, the majority of today's buildings will still be in use in 2050. Due to the impact of the facade on such aspects as thermal performance and aesthetics, façade retrofit is seen as …

Modulation Of Innate Immune Cells By The Nad+ Pathway, Abbas Jawad Al-Shabany
Modulation Of Innate Immune Cells By The Nad+ Pathway, Abbas Jawad Al-Shabany
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
NAD+ has previously been shown to regulate TNF-α synthesis and TNF-α has been shown to regulate NAD+ homeostasis, thus providing a link between a pro-inflammatory response and redox status. Despite the well-established link between TNF-α and NAD+, the mechanism as to how NAD+ modulates TNF-α release is not fully understood. To achieve this, this link was investigated using THP-1 cell line-derived M1-like (pro-inflammatory) and M2-like (anti-inflammatory) macrophages using PMA and vitamin D3, respectively. NAD+ levels differed markedly between M1-like and M2-like macrophages, with M1-like having much higher basal levels. LPS increases NAD+ levels and TNF-α secretion in M1-like but not …
Application Of An Improved Video-Based Depth Inversion Technique To A Macrotidal Sandy Beach, Erwin Willem Johan Bergsma
Application Of An Improved Video-Based Depth Inversion Technique To A Macrotidal Sandy Beach, Erwin Willem Johan Bergsma
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Storm conditions are considered the dominating erosional mechanism for the coastal zone. Morphological changes during storms are hard to measure due to energetic environmental conditions. Surveys are therefore mostly executed right after a storm on a local scale over a single or few storms [days to weeks]. The impact of a single storm might depend on the preceding sequence of storms. Here, a video camera system is deployed in the South-West of England at the beach of Porthtowan to observe and assess short-term storm impact and long-term recovery. The morphological change is observed with a state-of-the-art video-based depth estimation tool …
The Biological And Ecological Impacts Of Hypoxia On Coastal Benthic Communities, Ruth Naomi Calder-Potts
The Biological And Ecological Impacts Of Hypoxia On Coastal Benthic Communities, Ruth Naomi Calder-Potts
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Traditionally, hypoxia has been defined as the situation where DO levels have fallen below 2.0 mg O2 L-1, but increasing evidence suggests that this low level of DO is inadequate to describe the onset of hypoxia impacts for many organisms. Consequently, there is a need for a greater understanding of how ‘moderate’ alterations in DO levels will affect ecosystem processes and functionality, specifically through behavioural and physiological alterations at the organism and community level. This thesis reports on mesocosm experiments which were conducted to examine the effects of moderate (> 3.0 mg O2 L-1) hypoxia on firstly, a key ecosystem …
Spatial And Temporal Variability Of Sandy Beach Sediment Grain Size And Sorting, Sam Prodger
Spatial And Temporal Variability Of Sandy Beach Sediment Grain Size And Sorting, Sam Prodger
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Beach grain size plays a major role in controlling beach slope and sediment transport rates and is a crucial criterion in selecting the appropriate fill material for beach nourishment. Yet, little is known about how and why beach grain size (and sorting) varies both spatially and temporally on high-energy sandy beaches. Therefore, in this PhD research project, the presence, magnitude and predictability of any spatio-temporal sediment variability was investigated on a number of contrasting high-energy (average significant wave height = 0.8 to 3.5 m), predominantly macrotidal (MSR = 3.1 – 6.2 m), sandy (0.26 – 0.64 mm) beach sites around …
The Vulnerability Of Different Populations Of The Commercially-Important Shrimp Pandalus Borealis To Environmental Stress, Emilie Florence Hall
The Vulnerability Of Different Populations Of The Commercially-Important Shrimp Pandalus Borealis To Environmental Stress, Emilie Florence Hall
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
The present study adopted an integrative approach to conduct a population comparison of vulnerability to environmental stress in a commercially important species of ectotherm. Specifically, I investigated how differing environmental conditions in native habitats may drive intra-species divergence and alter performance when conditions shift. This study used northern prawn (Pandalus borealis Krøyer 1838) populations with known morphological differences from two spatially proximate fjord sites differing in oxygen regime as a model system. The genetic population structure was analysed and whole organism, physiological, and metabolomic performance under hypoxia and thermal stress were assessed. Genetic analyses displayed no significant dissimilarities between P. …
The Microbiological Safety Of Fresh Produce In Lebanon- A Holistic “Farm-To-Fork Chain” Approach To Evaluate Food Safety, Compliance Levels And Underlying Risk Factors, Dima Faour-Klingbeil
The Microbiological Safety Of Fresh Produce In Lebanon- A Holistic “Farm-To-Fork Chain” Approach To Evaluate Food Safety, Compliance Levels And Underlying Risk Factors, Dima Faour-Klingbeil
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
The consumption of unsafe fresh vegetables has been linked to an increasing number of outbreaks of human infections. In Lebanon, although raw vegetables are major constituents of the national cuisine, studies on the safety of fresh produce are scant. This research employed a holistic approach to identify the different stages of the food chain that contribute to the microbiological risks on fresh produce and the spreading of hazards. A thorough analysis of the institutional and regulatory framework and the socio-political environment showed that the safety of local fresh produce in Lebanon is at risk due to largely unregulated practices and …
Field Observations Of Infragravity Wave Response To Variable Sea-Swell Wave Forcing, Kris William Inch
Field Observations Of Infragravity Wave Response To Variable Sea-Swell Wave Forcing, Kris William Inch
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Infragravity waves are low frequency (0.005-0.04 Hz) waves that can dominate the spectrum of water motions and sediment transport processes within the inner surf zone. Despite the established importance of infragravity waves in shaping our coasts and numerous studies dating back to the 1950s, several aspects of infragravity wave analysis, generation and dissipation remain poorly understood. As much of the recent infragravity research has focussed on fetch-limited coasts, less is known about the climatology of these waves on energetic coastlines subject to both swell and fetch-limited waves. It has been postulated that bed friction only plays a significant role in …
Academic Capitalism In Architecture Schools: A Feminist Critique Of Employability, 24/7 Work And Entrepreneurship, I Troiani
School of Art, Design and Architecture
This chapter examines the current situation that many universities worldwide are facing due to globalisation, which is of transitioning from institutions for education (Foucault’s ‘premodern or medieval university’) toentrepreneurial businesses (the ‘modern university’). The modern university is governed by a neoliberal system of production and consumption of students, staff, knowledge and research for the purpose of improving nation economies. Looking particularly at schools of architecture, it discusses employability, 24-hour work and entrepreneurship in relation to marketisation and economisation. It tracks the inequalities that arise from the neoliberalisation of public universities on teaching content, an administrative-directed work, workloads, wellbeing and gender. …

Novel Use Of Field-Portable-Xrf For The Direct Analysis Of Trace Elements In Marine Macroalgae., Annie Bull, Murray T. Brown, Andrew Turner
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Samples of dried marine macroalgae (Fucus serratus, Palmaria palmata and Ulva lactuca) have been analysed for trace elements by a novel, non-destructive approach involving a Niton field-portable-X-ray fluorescence (FP-XRF) spectrometer configured in a low density plastics mode with thickness correction. Detection limits for a 200-s counting time ranged from <5 μg g(-1) for As and Pb in F. serratus and As in P. palmata to several tens of μg g(-1) for Cd, Sb and Sn in all species tested. Arsenic, Cu, Pb and Zn were detected by the XRF in samples collected from a protected beach (n = 18) and in samples therefrom that had been exposed to additional aqueous elements in combination (n = 72) with concentrations returned (in μg g(-1)) ranging from 3.9 to 39.7 for As, 13.0 to 307 for Cu, 6.1 to 14.7 for Pb and 12.5 to 522 for Zn. Independent measurements of trace elements in the macroalgae by ICP-MS following nitric acid digestion revealed a direct and significant proportionality with concentrations returned by the XRF, with slopes of the XRF-ICP relationships (As = 1.0; Cu = 2.3; Pb = 2.4; Zn = 1.7) that can be used to calibrate the instrument for direct measurements. The approach shows potential for the in situ monitoring of macroalgae in coastal regions that is currently being investigated.

‘This Is Where We Are’ (TIWWA) was an immersive and interactive algorithmic sculpture fuelled by the data we collectively generate. This collaborative work was created for the opening of the new Tate Modern Switch house in London in June 2016 by the i-DAT Research and Design Collective, Tate Collective London and Intercity. This technological fusion of interactive light and sound asked audiences to consider the data they generate and the algorithmic systems that increasingly mediate their reality and influence their behaviour. The creation of the sculptural artefacts and the digital systems driving them, were forged through interplay between data, algorithms …
