The Infusion Length Of Material Filled Inside Hollow Core Fiber, Omkar Balasaheb Ugale Dec 2017

The Infusion Length Of Material Filled Inside Hollow Core Fiber, Omkar Balasaheb Ugale

Theses

We have designed a MATLAB code to perform the simulations on the infusion length of fluid inside the capillary. Previous research work has shown few results but the equation used for plotting the graph of infusion length v/s time has a numerical error. The work we have done has shown the step-by-step procedure to derive the list of forces acting on the capillary getting filled with the material and has also plotted the graph of infusion length v/s time from the equation we get after proof of derivation. The significant changes can be seen in the overall infusion length from …

The Free-Play Sandbox: A Methodology For The Evaluation Of Social Robotics And A Dataset Of Social Interactions, S Lemaignan, C Edmunds, E Senft, T Belpaeme Dec 2017

The Free-Play Sandbox: A Methodology For The Evaluation Of Social Robotics And A Dataset Of Social Interactions, S Lemaignan, C Edmunds, E Senft, T Belpaeme

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Evaluating human-robot social interactions in a rigorous manner is notoriously difficult: studies are either conducted in labs with constrained protocols to allow for robust measurements and a degree of replicability, but at the cost of ecological validity; or in the wild, which leads to superior experimental realism, but often with limited replicability and at the expense of rigorous interaction metrics. We introduce a novel interaction paradigm, designed to elicit rich and varied social interactions while having desirable scientific properties (replicability, clear metrics, possibility of either autonomous or Wizard-of-Oz robot behaviours). This paradigm focuses on child-robot interactions, and builds on a …

The Effect Of Drought On Phytochemical Active Compounds Content In Chamomile And Yarrow, H Rihan, B Mahmood, M Foulkes, S Burchett

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

The effect of drought stress conditions on the phytochemical compounds content of German chamomile (Matricaia chamomilla L.), common yarrow and summer berries yarrow (Achillea millefolium L.) was investigated. Treatments contained drought stress 70% field capacity (FC) pots and control (well-watered 100% FC) pots under controlled glasshouse conditions. Freeze dried and ground leaves were extracted at room temperature using Shaking extraction with methanol (99.9%) as an efficient solvent in order to determine the phytochemical compositions of phenols and flavonoids from dried chamomile and yarrow leaves. Samples were then analysed using High performance liquid chromatography with ultra-violet detection (HPLC-UV). Five times sample …

Seafarer Citizen Scientist Ocean Transparency Data As A Resource For Phytoplankton And Climate Research, Sd Seafarers, S Lavender, G Beaugrand, N Outram, Et Al

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

The oceans' phytoplankton that underpin the marine food chain appear to be changing in abundance due to global climate change. Here, we compare the first four years of data from a citizen science ocean transparency study, conducted by seafarers using home-made Secchi Disks and a free Smartphone application called Secchi, with contemporaneous satellite ocean colour measurements. Our results show seafarers collect useful Secchi Disk measurements of ocean transparency that could help future assessments of climate-induced changes in the phytoplankton when used to extend historical Secchi Disk data.

Kids Make Sense... And They Vote: The Importance Of Child Study In Learning To Teach Responsively, Frederick Erickson

Occasional Paper Series

A lecture that discusses the "developmental-interaction" perspective and practice that has become the hallmark of Bank Street. Erickson builds upon the relations of mutual influence among students, teachers, and learning environments, and taking account of the relations between local practice within the small-scale "here and now" interactional ecosystems of immediate learning environments and the workings of culture, language, and society across more distal connections in social space and time.

Crossing Disciplinary Lines To Engage Students In Cross-Cultural Learning During Short-Term Study Abroad, Margaret Gonglewski, Anna Helm

Global Advances in Business Communication

This article showcases an innovative cross-disciplinary course on green business that featured a short-term study abroad (STA) program in Germany. The course and STA component were jointly developed and taught by an International Business and a German language/culture faculty member, in an attempt to capitalize on the knowledge and skills from experts in both fields. This stands in contrast to most business-focused STAs, typically designed and implemented by one business faculty member without explicit attention to the development of students' cultural competence. After presenting our case for this cross-disciplinary approach, we describe the course with relevant information about the content …

The Unenforced Promise Of Equal Pay Acts: A National Problem And Possible Solution From Maine, Elizabeth J. Wyman Esq. Dec 2017

The Unenforced Promise Of Equal Pay Acts: A National Problem And Possible Solution From Maine, Elizabeth J. Wyman Esq.

Maine Law Review

Equal pay for women is a concept that has been around for a long time. It was during World War I that women were first guaranteed pay equity in the form of regulations enforced by the War Labor Board of 1918. The Board's equal pay policy required manufacturers, who put women on the payroll while male employees were serving in the military, to pay those women the same wages that were paid to the men. The National War Labor Board continued that trend through World War II. Shortly after the war, states began enacting statutes that required employers to pay …

Optimizing Production Schedule With Energy Consumption And Demand Charges In Parallel Machine Setting, Farnaz Ghazi Nezami, Mojtaba Heydar, Regina Berretta Dec 2017

Optimizing Production Schedule With Energy Consumption And Demand Charges In Parallel Machine Setting, Farnaz Ghazi Nezami, Mojtaba Heydar, Regina Berretta

Industrial & Manufacturing Engineering Presentations And Conference Materials

Environmental sustainability concerns, along with the growing need for electricity and associated costs, make energy-cost reduction an inevitable decision-making criterion in production scheduling. In this research, we study the problem of production scheduling on nonidentical parallel machines with machine-dependent processing times and known job release dates to minimize total completion time and energy costs. The energy costs in this study include demand and consumption charges. We present a mixed-integer nonlinear model to formulate the problem. The model is then linearized and its performance is tested through numerical experiments.

Parallel Cosine Nearest Neighbor Graph Construction, David Anastasiu, George Karypis Dec 2017

Parallel Cosine Nearest Neighbor Graph Construction, David Anastasiu, George Karypis

Faculty Publications

The nearest neighbor graph is an important structure in many data mining methods for clustering, advertising, recommender systems, and outlier detection. Constructing the graph requires computing up to n2 similarities for a set of n objects. This high complexity has led researchers to seek approximate methods, which find many but not all of the nearest neighbors. In contrast, we leverage shared memory parallelism and recent advances in similarity joins to solve the problem exactly. Our method considers all pairs of potential neighbors but quickly filters pairs that could not be a part of the nearest neighbor graph, based on similarity …

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Anthropological field studies of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) in their unique cultural and political contexts. Cultures of Doing Good: Anthropologists and NGOs serves as a foundational text to advance a growing subfield of social science inquiry: the anthropology of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). Thorough introductory chapters provide a short history of NGO anthropology, address how the study of NGOs contributes to anthropology more broadly, and examine ways that anthropological studies of NGOs expand research agendas spawned by other disciplines. In addition, the theoretical concepts and debates that have anchored the analysis of NGOs since they entered scholarly discourse after World War II …

Development Of Image Analysis Toolboxes For Biological Imaging, Samia Sanjari Dec 2017

Development Of Image Analysis Toolboxes For Biological Imaging, Samia Sanjari

Student Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of tissue engineering is to regenerate the damaged tissues by using three dimensional porous scaffolds which act as substrates for tissue regeneration. Several studies have showed that structural properties of scaffold (fiber diameter, pore size of scaffold, and fiber orientation) play a significant role in tissue regeneration. Therefore, in order to design a suitable scaffold for tissue engineering application, it is important to understand the structural properties of fibrous scaffold. To achieve this aim in this study, standalone image analysis toolboxes are generated by using the MATLAB software for finding the mean pore size of scaffolds, length, diameter …
