Application Of Real Field Connected Vehicle Data For Aggressive Driving Identification On Horizontal Curves, Arash Jahangiri, Vincent Berardi, Sahar Ghanipoor Machiani

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

The emerging technology of connected vehicles generates a vast amount of data that could be used to enhance roadway safety. In this paper, we focused on safety applications of a real field connected vehicle data on a horizontal curve. The database contains connected vehicle data that were collected on public roads in Ann Arbor, Michigan with instrumented vehicles. Horizontal curve negotiations are associated with a great number of accidents, which are mainly attributed to driving errors. Aggressive/risky driving is a contributing factor to the high rate of crashes on horizontal curves. Using basic safety message data in connected vehicle data …

Book Review: Justice Triage, Milan Markovic Dec 2017

Book Review: Justice Triage, Milan Markovic

Faculty Scholarship

Benjamin Barton and Stephanos Bibas’s new book, Rebooting Justice: More Technology, Fewer Lawyers, and the Future of Law, is an eloquent exemplar of the deregulation literature. What sets Rebooting Justice apart from other works in the genre is that Barton and Bibas do not treat deregulation as a panacea. Their starting point is that Americans are not well served by lawyers’ monopoly over the legal services market, but they do not envision a world in which every legal problem is resolved ably and efficiently. Their goal is much more modest: a less complex legal system in which lawyer …

Prayers, Sex, Islam, And Electric Guitars: A Rhetorical Criticism Of The Taqwacores, Margaret Moore Dec 2017

Prayers, Sex, Islam, And Electric Guitars: A Rhetorical Criticism Of The Taqwacores, Margaret Moore

Conversations: A Graduate Student Journal of the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Theology

Punk rock Islam may not a common phrase to hear in society, but it is quickly expanding in popularity and in effectiveness. A fiction book entitled "The Taqwacores" tells the story of faithful Muslims practicing punk rock Islam in their own way. The novel utilizes constittive rhetoric, a concept popularized by Maurice Charland, to create a social movement that is sweeping the world. This paper analyzes the novel using the tenets of constitutive rhetoric and uses social movement theory to understand the implications that a simple book is having upon the world. Punk rock Islam may not be such an …

The Sate Of Israel, Mythology, And The Valorized Bible, Gregory Jeffers Dec 2017

The Sate Of Israel, Mythology, And The Valorized Bible, Gregory Jeffers

Conversations: A Graduate Student Journal of the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Theology

I argue that the Christian Neo-conservatives (like many before them, including the Medieval crusaders) read the bible mythologically, and thus uproot the the bible from its traditional moral, theological, historical, and grammatical anchors in service to a specific eschatological vision. This shift is rhetorical in nature in that those receiving the biblical text now are not the same as those who originally received it, nor are they the same as the scholars, theologians, and historians who have been careful to read the text with integrity. The shift in audience is a shift in interpretive communities and thus a shift in …

“This Whole Quest For Love”: The Role Of Narrative In The Bachelor, Suzanne Shedd Dec 2017

“This Whole Quest For Love”: The Role Of Narrative In The Bachelor, Suzanne Shedd

Conversations: A Graduate Student Journal of the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Theology

Reality television has exploded into a popular culture phenomenon in recent years, and it is likely to remain a permanent media staple. With its spike in popularity, reality TV has attracted scholarly interest, but most of this attention focuses on audiences’ responses to and motivations for viewing these fact-based programs. This study, however, is more concerned with the rhetorical strategies employed in reality television that appeal to viewers and compel them to keep watching. Centering specifically on the immensely popular romance program The Bachelor, this study examines the narrative elements evident in the show that connect audiences to other stories …

Eschatological Minority Report: Transcendent Heaven, Patrick Ford Dec 2017

Eschatological Minority Report: Transcendent Heaven, Patrick Ford

Conversations: A Graduate Student Journal of the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Theology

Far from a mere historical or theological curiosity, eschatology has a profound formative impact on the way adherents view life, purpose and their relationship to Creation. Typical contemporary conceptualizations of heaven in American evangelicalism describe an otherworldly, intangible and wholly spiritual realm in whichGod’s reign is complete and all the faithful reside in total peace and comfort after a final judgment. Such “transcendent-heaven” eschatology is vastly different from historically orthodox eschatology recorded through the eighteenth century and still maintained by the Roman Catholic and Orthodox Churches, among others. This historical-theological survey suggests that transcendent-heaven eschatology was first-articulated by Jonathan Edwards …

Sex, Sin And The Soul: How Galen’S Philosophical Speculation Became Augustine’S Theological Assumptions, Paul Anthony Dec 2017

Sex, Sin And The Soul: How Galen’S Philosophical Speculation Became Augustine’S Theological Assumptions, Paul Anthony

Conversations: A Graduate Student Journal of the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Theology

Augustine of Hippo may never have heard of Galen of Pergamum. Three centuries separated the two, as did an almost impassable geographic and cultural divide that kept the works of Galen and other Greek writers virtually unknown in the Latin west for a millennium. Yet Galenic assumptions about human sexuality and the materiality of the soul underlie Augustine’s signature doctrine of original sin. Galen’s influence was so widely felt in the Greek-speaking east that Christians almost immediately worked his assumptions into their own theologies. Their conclusions thus became the new assumptions that found their way into the library of Ambrose …

Can Self-Compassion Reduce Depression And Anxiety In Adolescents? Dec 2017

Can Self-Compassion Reduce Depression And Anxiety In Adolescents?

Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology

Self-compassion has been explored as a new intervention strategy for adolescents suffering from depression and anxiety. These two mental illnesses are increasingly prevalent among this age group due to a variety of factors, including transitional difficulties and social stressors (Muris, Meesters, Pierik & de Kock, 2016; Neff & McGeh ee, 2010). Studies have shown that individuals who practice self-compassion have fewer symptoms of depression and anxiety (Bluth & Blanton, 2015). Conversely, insecure attachment, low self-esteem, and belief in the personal fable, symptoms common in depressed and anxious individuals, negatively correlate with self-compassion (Bluth & Blanton, 2015; Muris et al., 2016; …

Effects Of Extracurricular Activities And Physical Activity On Academic Success Dec 2017

Effects Of Extracurricular Activities And Physical Activity On Academic Success

Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology

In this paper, I provide a comprehensive review of recent literature (published since 2010) regarding the relation between academic success and participation in extracurricular activities. I examine the direct effects—both positive and negative—that such participation has on the academic performance of students of all grade levels. Subsequently, because sports constitute a large portion of the extracurricular spectrum, I also examine studies that analyze t he effects of physical activity on academic performance. These studies suggest that extracurricular activities may have a positive effect on academics, especially when they contribute to a balanced life, self-confidence, an increased sense of personal duty …

Virtually Free Speech: The Problem Of Unbridled Debates On Social Media Dec 2017

Virtually Free Speech: The Problem Of Unbridled Debates On Social Media

Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology

How individuals communicate on the internet has been influenced by the rise of social networking and the introduction of Web 2.0. Contentious sociopolitical arguments containing false polarization and confirmation bias, accompanied by egocentric and ethnocentric thinking are common. Ideological radicalization has also increased, as evidenced by the prevalence of ISIS and White supremacists on sites such as Twitter and Reddit. One consequence is the online practice known as flaming—intensely aggressive, personal verbal attacks. To reduce its occurrence, both macro- and micro-solutions should be implemented. On the macro-level, social networks and related online organizations should establish and enforce guide lines while …

Real Men Burp Babies And Real Women Deliver Dough: The Advantages Of Nontraditional Parental Roles Dec 2017

Real Men Burp Babies And Real Women Deliver Dough: The Advantages Of Nontraditional Parental Roles

Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology

Stay-at-home fathers and working mothers continue to defy gender expectations despite traditional societal beliefs pertaining to gender roles. These nontraditional couples model a contemporary and egalitarian lifestyle for their children in a world that is increasingly advocating for more gender equality within and outside of the home. Children within these households exhibit positive cognitive traits, enhanced behavioral developments, and enriched familial relationships (Brown, Mangelsdorf, & Neff, 2012; Deutsch, Servis , & Payne, 2001; Dunn, Rochlen, & O’Brien, 2013; Fischer & Anderson, 2012; Flaskerud, 2012; Lucas-Thompson, Goldberg, & Prause, 2010 ; Rushing & Powell, 2015; Williams & Radin, 1999; Wills & …

Responding To Bullying By Gender Dec 2017

Responding To Bullying By Gender

Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology

The present literature review examines how the construction of gender influences bullying among children and adolescents, as w ell as the possible effects of bullying on children, both as bullies an d victims. An in-depth, theoretical analysis of gender stereotype and gender construction is presented, through a review of cognitive development theory, social learning theory, and cultivation theory. Gender construction leads children to adopt different behaviors and to interact with peers in various ways (Emilson et al., 2016; Fagot, 1994; Tobin et al., 2010). Among children and adolescents, the two most prominent forms of bullying that result from gender construction …

Community And Resilience Among Sherpas In The Post-Earthquake Everest Region, Pasang Y. Sherpa Dec 2017

Community And Resilience Among Sherpas In The Post-Earthquake Everest Region, Pasang Y. Sherpa

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

In this article, I examine how residents of the Mount Everest region of Nepal responded after two major earthquakes occurred on April 25th and May 12th, 2015. This article is based on my participant-observation of discussions among Sherpas, on-foot surveys of earthquake damage, and the experiences of residents, which I recorded in Pharak, between the two major seismic events. I also reviewed institutional activities and reports that pertained to the Everest region and spoke at length with other Sherpas. In these discussions, the boundaries of ‘community’ were both fluid and self-understood. A ‘sense of community’ and ‘resilience’ emerged as salient …

Becoming Rasuwa Relief: Practices Of Multiple Engagement In Post-Earthquake Nepal, Austin Lord, Galen Murton Dec 2017

Becoming Rasuwa Relief: Practices Of Multiple Engagement In Post-Earthquake Nepal, Austin Lord, Galen Murton

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

In this article, we reflect on the multiple nature of our engagements in the wake of the 7.8m earthquake that struck Nepal on April 25th 2015. Specifically, we trace the events, experiences, decisions, positions, and processes that constituted our work with a post-earthquake volunteer initiative we helped to form, called Rasuwa Relief. Using the concept of multiplicity (cf. Mol 2002), we consider the uncertain process by which Rasuwa Relief began to cohere, as a collective of diverse efforts, interventions, projects, and commitments, and how Rasuwa Relief was continually and multiply enacted through practices of engagement. As a collaborative effort that …

Disaster Governance And Challenges In A Rural Nepali Community: Notes From Future Village Ngo, Lai Ming Lam, Varun Khanna, Rob Kuipers Dec 2017

Disaster Governance And Challenges In A Rural Nepali Community: Notes From Future Village Ngo, Lai Ming Lam, Varun Khanna, Rob Kuipers

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

More than two years after the 2015 earthquakes devastated Nepal, Katunge village in Dhading district, Nepal, remained as destroyed as it was right after the earthquake. While the villagers were rather hopeful about rebuilding their houses and lives during the immediate relief effort in which we engaged, one month after the earthquake, now only a few are confident that they will ever rebuild their homes. In this article, we describe the reconstruction progress, followed by a critique of why the reconstruction progress has been so slow. We conclude with reflections on reconstruction challenges interwoven into the context of our NGO …

The Maintenance Of Virtue Over Time: Notes On Changing Household Lives In Post-Disaster Nepal, Andrew W. Haxby Dec 2017

The Maintenance Of Virtue Over Time: Notes On Changing Household Lives In Post-Disaster Nepal, Andrew W. Haxby

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

Although it is banal to say the series of earthquakes that hit Nepal in Spring 2015 will radically change the country, what this change will consist of still remains undetermined. As many earthquake victims learn to make do in broken houses, tents, or corrugated tin structures, post-earthquake Nepal seems held within a frustrating stasis, wherein temporary hardship is often impossible to distinguish from lasting consequence. Yet this sense of stasis is in part misleading. While the act of building remains slow, households who lost their homes have been scrambling to rethink their financial futures in order to afford reconstruction. In …

Aftershock: Reflections On The Politics Of Reconstruction In Northern Gorkha, Rune Bolding Bennike Dec 2017

Aftershock: Reflections On The Politics Of Reconstruction In Northern Gorkha, Rune Bolding Bennike

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

Many commentators have described the aftermath of the 2015 earthquake in Nepal either (1) through the notion that ‘nothing is going on’ in regards to postquake reconstruction; or (2) through a celebration of grassroots resilience and urban entrepreneurship in the face of disaster and state neglect. In this article, I draw on observations from Kutang and Nubri in the mountains of northern Gorkha District to argue that neither of these descriptions is fully accurate. Even in this remote and inaccessible area, much was being done in the aftermath of disaster, and a great deal of this activity diverges, in multiple …

Himalayan Trauma: Administrative Thrombosis And Citizens’ Response, Robert E. Beazley Dec 2017

Himalayan Trauma: Administrative Thrombosis And Citizens’ Response, Robert E. Beazley

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

In this paper, the author uses excerpts from social media postings and traditional media to highlight how various citizen and volunteer responses to the 2015 earthquake helped fill in the gaps created by institutional dysfunction. Further, he shows how these two types of media played a critical role in facilitating communication between grassroots aid initiatives and earthquake affected people and their families and friends, not only in Kathmandu but also in neglected mountainous areas as well. The author uses a personal, reflexive approach to help situate the distinct experiences of earthquake affected people including trauma patients, people with disabilities, and …

Calculating Risk, Denying Uncertainty: Seismicity And Hydropower Development In Nepal, Christopher Butler, Matthäus Rest Dec 2017

Calculating Risk, Denying Uncertainty: Seismicity And Hydropower Development In Nepal, Christopher Butler, Matthäus Rest

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

If Ulrich Beck’s definition of ‘risk society’ describes societies increasingly structured by preoccupations with future environmental threats and related insecurities created by modernization, then Nepal’s hydropower community would appear to be quite the opposite, propelled into environmental denial by twin demands for domestic electricity and revenue earned through hydroelectric export. Our research reveals that prior to the April 2015 earthquake in Nepal, the hydropower community was engaging in what Eviatar Zerubavel calls ‘socially organized denial,’ largely ignoring the uncertainties associated with seismic activity. Earthquakes and tremors were viewed as unavoidable realities that should not impede hydropower development. This denial, we …

Globalization Tumult And Civilizational Greatness, Pradip N. Khandwalla Dec 2017

Globalization Tumult And Civilizational Greatness, Pradip N. Khandwalla

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

In the kind of tumultuous, strife-torn, and stressful world we are living in, we need to ask the questions: “Is our civilization moving in the right direction? What makes a civilization great?” Greed for power and greed for money, unless offset by a shared conception of civilizational excellence, often degenerate into widespread corruption, fraud, and violence. In developing countries like India, the challenge is to design a civilization that uses the creativity and enterprise of the market economy, the freedom of choice of democracy, and the altruism of the developmental state – to reverse degeneration and foster social, economic, and …
