To Stress Or Not To Stress: Physiological Responses To Tetrodotoxin In Resistant Garter Snakes Vary By Sex, Lorin A. Neuman-Lee, Edmund D. Brodie Jr., Tyler Hansen, Edmund D. Brodie Jr., Susannah S. French

Biology Faculty Publications

The activation of the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis is one of the most important physiological processes in coping with any deviation in an organism’s homeostasis. This activation and the secretion of glucocorticoids, such as corticosterone, allow organisms to cope with perturbations and return to optimal physiological functioning as quickly as possible. In this study, we examined the HPA axis activation in common gartersnakes (Thamnophis sirtalis) as a response to a natural toxin, tetrodotoxin (TTX). This neurotoxin is found in high levels in the Rough-skinned Newt (Taricha granulosa), which is a prey item for these snakes. …

Reef Calcifiers Are Adapted To Episodic Heat Stress But Vulnerable To Sustained Warming, Marleen Stuhr, Claire E. Reymond, Vera Rieder, Pamela Hallock, Jörg Rahnenführer, Hildegard Westphal, Michal Kucera

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Shallow marine ecosystems naturally experience fluctuating physicochemical conditions across spatial and temporal scales. Widespread coral-bleaching events, induced by prolonged heat stress, highlight the importance of how the duration and frequency of thermal stress influence the adaptive physiology of photosymbiotic calcifiers. Large benthic foraminifera harboring algal endosymbionts are major tropical carbonate producers and bioindicators of ecosystem health. Like corals, they are sensitive to thermal stress and bleach at temperatures temporarily occurring in their natural habitat and projected to happen more frequently. However, their thermal tolerance has been studied so far only by chronic exposure, so how they respond under more realistic …

Early “Neolithics” Of China: Variation And Evolutionary Implications, Shengqian Chen, Pei-Lin Yu Jul 2017

Early “Neolithics” Of China: Variation And Evolutionary Implications, Shengqian Chen, Pei-Lin Yu

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The growth and significance of scientific research into the origins of agriculture in China calls for fresh examination at scales large enough to facilitate explanation of cultural evolutionary processes. The Paleolithic to Neolithic transition (PNT) is not yet well-understood because most archaeological research on early agriculture cites data from the more conspicuous and common early Neolithic sites. In this, the first of two papers, we synthesize a broad range of early Neolithic archaeological data, including diagnostic artifacts, settlement patterns, site structure, and biological remains, to consider agriculture as a system-level adaptive phenomenon. Although farming by this period was already well-established …

Where’S My Dad? A Feminist Approach To Incentivized Paternity Leave, Jennifer E. Karr

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

This article examines paid paternal leave from a feminist perspective. First, this article aims to trace the history of gender roles in America and how the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) was enacted to allow women to maintain roles in both the public and private sphere. Second, this article explores how gender roles began to shift and more fathers sought FMLA leave to care for their children. This gender shift caused numerous shortcomings in law and public policy. This article will examine these shortcomings, compare various international paternal leave packages to each other, look to what deficiencies currently exist, and …

Understanding The Surface Fouling Mechanism Of Ultrananocrystalline Diamond Microelectrodes Using Microfluidics For Neurochemical Detection, An-Yi Chang Jul 2017

Understanding The Surface Fouling Mechanism Of Ultrananocrystalline Diamond Microelectrodes Using Microfluidics For Neurochemical Detection, An-Yi Chang

Doctoral Dissertations

Electrochemical methods are widely used for chronic neurochemical sensing, but thus far, the organic solution redox reactions fouled the electrodes' surface. It caused the reduction of sensitivity and the electrodes' lifetime.

Here, we present the boron-doped nanocrystalline diamond microelectrodes (BDUNCD) as the next generation electrode material for neurochemical sensor development. To aid in long-term chronic monitoring of neurochemicals, they have a wide window of electrochemical potential, extremely low background current, and excellent chemical inertness. The main research goal is to reduce the rate of electrode fouling due to the reaction by-products, and significantly extend their useful lifetime.

We systematically characterize …

Girk2 And Gababr1 Downregulate In Response To Ttx As Girk2, Gababr1, And Gababr2 Are Not Affected By Bc Treatment, Staci E. Hammer, Amanda Weiss, Hee Jung Chung

PRECS student projects

Homeostatic plasticity is the response neurons undergo to regulate changes in excitability levels and bring the cells back to homeostasis. Research on homeostatic plasticity at the molecular level can lead to improved treatments for neurological diseases such as epilepsy, Alzheimer's, and schizophrenia. The research featured in this poster looks at the response of GIRK (G protein-gated inwardly rectifying potassium) channels and GABAb (gamma-amniobutyric acid) receptors to neurotoxins, tetrodotoxin (TTX) or bicuculline (BC).

Prolonged activity blockade of 48 hour TTX treatment significantly reduced GABABR1 and GIRK2 expression. This supports the idea that because these two proteins inhibit action potentials, there will …

You Are What You Eat: Food-Drug Interaction In Honey Bees (Apis Mellifera), Allison G. Kelley, Liao Ling-Hsiu, May Berenbaum

PRECS student projects

The research featured in this poster examined how phytochemicals in nectar and pollen (quercetin and p-coumaric acid), which are known to upregulate cytochrome P450 detoxification enzymes, affect honey bee survival in combination with the pesticides propiconazole, a fungicide, and chlorantraniliprole, an insecticide. While consuming either phytochemical in the absence of pesticides can prolong longevity, consumption of pesticides reduced bee lifespan significantly with or without phytochemicals present.

Ivd Formation In Monodelphis Domestica, Emma C.B. Gray, Jen Maier, Karen Sears

PRECS student projects

The research summarized on this poster supports the use of the gray short-tailed opossum (Monodelphis domestica) as a lab animal for research into invertebral disc formation and degeneration. Preliminary data suggests that some genes involved in the formation and maintenance of the notochord in mice are the same in the short-tailed opossum. Data also suggests the ossification of the vertebral column of pups proceeds anteriorly to posteriorly and that much of the maturation of the nucleus puposus happens in the first ten days.

Thick Slice Clarity For Localization Of Novel Neuroactive Target Gene Products, Eva C. Ping, Michael C. Saul, Lisa Stubbs Jul 2017

Thick Slice Clarity For Localization Of Novel Neuroactive Target Gene Products, Eva C. Ping, Michael C. Saul, Lisa Stubbs

PRECS student projects

This poster describes the Thick Slice CLARITY technique, an alternative to the whole tissue or whole body clarity technique. The CLARITY technique is a tissue clearing method allowing for both structural and molecular analysis of a tissue sample, but the method applied to whole tissue or body is very expensive and time consuming. Thick Slice CLARITY applies the same principles but to a 200 micrometer slice of brain tissue. This method, used in conjunction wit standard fluorescent staining methods and imaging via confocal microscopy, has allowed for the colocalization of GPR3 with neurons in the mouse striatum.

Targeting Antioxidant Enzyme Expression As A Therapeutic Strategy For Ischemic Stroke, Stephanie M. Davis, Keith R. Pennypacker Jul 2017

Targeting Antioxidant Enzyme Expression As A Therapeutic Strategy For Ischemic Stroke, Stephanie M. Davis, Keith R. Pennypacker

Center for Advanced Translational Stroke Science Faculty Publications

During ischemic stroke, neurons and glia are subjected to damage during the acute and neuroinflammatory phases of injury. Production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) from calcium dysregulation in neural cells and the invasion of activated immune cells are responsible for stroke-induced neurodegeneration. Scientists have failed thus far to identify antioxidant-based drugs that can enhance neural cell survival and improve recovery after stroke. However, several groups have demonstrated success in protecting against stroke by increasing expression of antioxidant enzymes in neural cells. These enzymes, which include but are not limited to enzymes in the glutathione peroxidase, catalase, and superoxide dismutase families, …

Behavioral And Pharmacological Validation Of An Integrated Fear-Potentiated Startle And Prepulse Inhibition Paradigm, Mengjiao Zhang, Ming Li Jul 2017

Behavioral And Pharmacological Validation Of An Integrated Fear-Potentiated Startle And Prepulse Inhibition Paradigm, Mengjiao Zhang, Ming Li

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Fear-potentiated startle (FPS) and prepulse inhibition (PPI) of acoustic startle are two widely used paradigms specifically designed to capture the impact of negative emotion (e.g. fear) and preattentive function on startle response. Currently, there is no single paradigm that incorporates both FPS and PPI, making it impossible to examine the potential interactions between fear and attention in the regulation of startle response. In this study, we developed an integrated FPS and PPI test protocol and validated it with psychoactive drugs. In Experiment 1, male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to one of five groups, receiving either Light -Shock conditioning trials, …

Species Identification And Decay Assessment Of Late Pleistocene Fragmentary Vertebrate Remains From Pin Hole Cave (Creswell Crags, Uk) Using Collagen Fingerprinting, Michael Buckley, Virginia L. Harvey, Andrew T. Chamberlain Jul 2017

Species Identification And Decay Assessment Of Late Pleistocene Fragmentary Vertebrate Remains From Pin Hole Cave (Creswell Crags, Uk) Using Collagen Fingerprinting, Michael Buckley, Virginia L. Harvey, Andrew T. Chamberlain

KIP Articles

Ancient bone remains are widely utilized when investigating vertebrate biodiversity of past animal populations but are often so highly fragmented that the majority of specimens cannot be identified to any meaningful taxonomic level. Recently, high‐throughput methods for objective species identification using collagen peptide mass fingerprinting have been created to overcome this with the added indication that they could also offer a means of relative ageing through decay measurement. Here we explore both species identification and decay measurements for the Pin Hole Cave ‘microfaunal’ assemblage, the site that has been designated as a representative for Marine Oxygen Isotope Stage 3 in …

Hexavalent Chromium Exposure To Military Aircraft Painters, Doug Rosaaen Jul 2017

Hexavalent Chromium Exposure To Military Aircraft Painters, Doug Rosaaen

Graduate Theses & Non-Theses

Military aircraft routinely operate in harsh, corrosive environments that necessitate aggressive maintenance methods and products to prevent deterioration. Three primary tasks associated with corrosion control of these aircraft are abrasive blasting, sanding, and primer paint application. The most frequently used primer paints for these applications contain chromium VI (Cr VI) in the form of barium chromate and strontium chromate. Due to aircraft size and the nature of these tasks, control of Cr VI exposures is often difficult.

Numerous studies of chromate related industries have identified worker exposures in excess of the OSHA PEL of 5 μg/m3. Long-term analysis of chromate …

Is It Engineering Or Not?, Brooke A. Whitworth, Lindsay B. Wheeler

Publications

With the widespread adoption of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS Lead States 2013), science teachers now aspire to integrate engineering into science instruction, as the standards suggest, yet many don’t know how. The first steps are to define engineering and identify tasks that incorporate engineering, which can be difficult and confusing. This article presents a simple explanation of engineering and offers a framework to help teachers determine whether a task is based on engineering. We also offer examples of how to integrate engineering in Earth science, chemistry, biology, and physics.

Shifting Views On The Male-Female Relationship: Same-Sex Marriage And Other Social Consequences, W. Justin Dyer Jul 2017

Shifting Views On The Male-Female Relationship: Same-Sex Marriage And Other Social Consequences, W. Justin Dyer

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel

The past two decades in the United States have seen the near-universal definition of marriage (between a man and woman) shift dramatically from majority acceptance to majority rejection. In 1996, 65 percent of Americans favored marriage as only between a man and a woman, but by 2015, the year the US Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage, only 39 percent favored maintaining marriage as between a man and a woman.
