Color-Blind Racial Attitudes: Microaggressions In The Context Of Racism And White Privilege, Jared F. Edwards Jul 2017

Color-Blind Racial Attitudes: Microaggressions In The Context Of Racism And White Privilege, Jared F. Edwards

Administrative Issues Journal

Interest in institutional racism, White privilege, and microaggressions appears to be growing. We are living in times when the impact of race and racism are debated—when even the existence of racism is debated along with the appropriateness of examining the worst parts of U.S. history. This special-issue invited article includes a brief examination of historical information and current context in which racism and microaggressions exist, leading to their connections to Color-Blind Racial Attitudes (CoBRAs). Reviewed research on CoBRAs addresses teacher training, educational practices, experiences on college campuses, and organizational management.

Survey Of Colorado Tick Fever Virus Presence In Montana Deer Mice And Wood Ticks, Zach J. Hart, Joel W. Graff, Amy Kuenzi

2017 Undergraduate Research

Colorado Tick Fever Virus (CTFV) is carried by Rocky Mountain wood ticks (Demacetori andersoni). Its double-stranded RNA genome is comprised of twelve segments. In humans, it causes a variety of flu-like symptoms, including fever, headache, sensitivity to light, and muscle soreness. Because the symptoms often mimic the flu and other common diseases, it is often overlooked during clinical diagnosis.

Deer mice (Peromyscus manisculatus) are considered to be a reservoir for the virus. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of CTFV nucleic acid in mouse blood. The whole blood samples were screened from Polson and Gregson, …

Intraspecific Analysis Of Cerebral, Neurobasicranial, Mandibular, & Dental Integration: A Test Of Anatomic Relationships Among Superinferior Features Of The Adult Modern Human Skull, Derek Ralph, Michael Masters

2017 Undergraduate Research

Patterns of evolutionary change show a marked increase in brain growth over the past 200,000 to 300,000 years, with a reduction in facial projection, mandibular, and dental characteristics. The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons estimates 85% of people will need to have wisdom teeth removed to prevent complications at some point in their life (Cooper 2007). Genes that control quantity of teeth evolve independently from those controlling brain development (Main 2007). 10-25% of Americans are born missing one or more of their third molars with variation among the other modern human groups (Main 2007).

2017 Undergraduate Research

A biofilm is a grouping of one or more types of microorganisms in which cells stick together. Atmospheric nitrogen (N2) can be converted into ammonia (NH3) by organisms in a process called biological nitrogen fixation, becoming more bioavailable for plants to use. Anabaena cylindrica is a non-toxic nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria (NFC) that has been proposed for use as a biofertilizer.

MBA Faculty Conference Papers & Journal Articles

Methods of teaching, instruction, and training have been transformed due to advances Information Technology and Communication (ICT). People from all over the globe via ICT can learn just about anything, anytime, and anywhere provided they have basic linguistic knowledge and skills in their native language and an Internet connection. Using these ICT methods, one could question whether deep knowledge, comprehension, and understanding of a given content domain has occurred? More importantly, does instructor personality and their teaching traits make a difference to students in this modality? Quite possibly, the new learner’s ultimate outcome might be: the most convenient and cost …

Cancer stem cells have established mechanisms that contribute to tumor heterogeneity as well as resistance to therapy. Over 40% of hepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs) are considered to be clonal and arise from a stem-like/cancer stem cell. Moreover, HCC is the second leading cause of cancer death worldwide, and an improved understanding of cancer stem cells and targeting these in this cancer are urgently needed. Multiple studies have revealed etiological patterns and multiple genes/pathways signifying initiation and progression of HCC; however, unlike the transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) pathway, loss of p53 and/or activation of β-catenin do not spontaneously drive HCC in …

Understanding how microbiomes affect host resistance, parasite virulence, and parasite-associated diseases requires a collaborative effort between parasitologists, microbial ecologists, virologists, and immunologists. We hereby propose the Parasite Microbiome Project to bring together researchers with complementary expertise and to study the role of microbes in host-parasite interactions. Data from the Parasite Microbiome Project will help identify the mechanisms driving microbiome variation in parasites and infected hosts and how that variation is associated with the ecology and evolution of parasites and their disease outcomes. This is a call to arms to prevent fragmented research endeavors, encourage best practices in experimental approaches, and …

Infectious diseases cause more than 20% of cancers in the developing world [1]. About a dozen pathogens including Epstein-Barr virus and human T cell lymphocytotropic virus 1 are among the well-known examples. In addition, infection with several trematodes, which are eukaryotes, can cause malignancy. The International Agency for Research on Cancer categorizes infection with the fish-borne trematodes Opisthorchis viverrini and Clonorchis sinensis and the blood fluke Schistosoma haematobium as Group 1 biological carcinogens [2]. In addition to parasitism directly damaging development, health, and prosperity of infected populations, infection with these helminths leads to cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) (bile duct cancer) and squamous …

The Genetic Influences On Opiate Addiction, Anne Sielschott

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

The effects of addiction and the present opioid crisis can not only be felt at the individual level of the addict but throughout all aspects of society. From the infant born addicted to heroin, to the family members begging their loved ones to make a change, to the medical personnel with the responsibility of caring for those with drug seeking or violent behavior needing their next fix, the drug problem in America is one that can no longer be ignored. The number of unintentional drug overdoses in Ohio has grown from 411 in 2000 to a staggering 3050 in 2015, …

Sexual transmission of HIV requires exposure to the virus and infection of activated mucosal immune cells, specifically CD4+ T cells or dendritic cells. The foreskin is a major site of viral entry in heterosexual transmission of HIV. Although the probability of acquiring HIV from a sexual encounter is low, the risk varies even after adjusting for known HIV risk factors. The genital microbiome may account for some of the variability in risk by interacting with the host immune system to trigger inflammatory responses that mediate the infection of mucosal immune cells. We conducted a case-control study of uncircumcised participants …

A Proposal And Examination Of A Novel Life History And Sociometer Model Of Self-Esteem, Jin Chuan Yong Jul 2017

A Proposal And Examination Of A Novel Life History And Sociometer Model Of Self-Esteem, Jin Chuan Yong

Dissertations and Theses Collection

Self-esteem occupies an esteemed position in psychological research, but the self-esteem scholarship has often raised more questions than it has answered. Recent alternative approaches to self-esteem have made decent strides in resolving the mixed findings abound in the literature, such as a call for greater focus on self-esteem’s functionality and domain-specific components of self-esteem. However, the lack of a well-grounded, parsimonious theory of self-esteem has kept these proximate theories and findings disparate and our overall understanding of self-esteem incomplete. The current dissertation sought to address these issues by developing a model of self-esteem based on the evolutionarily driven sociometer and …

Coronary Artery Disease, Matthew Jarboe

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a highly prevalent disease in the United States. CAD is a major burden for the U.S. health care system. CAD can causes heart failure, arrhythmia, and myocardial infarction. Pathophysiology is important in CAD because its study has led to powerful intervention and will lead to better treatment recommendations from providers. There are modifiable risk factors such as dyslipidemia, hypertension, and diabetes mellitus that should be controlled when possible. Lifestyle changes can also have a significant impact on the course of CAD.

Type Ii Diabetes, Michelle Irwin

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

The chosen topic to research is Diabetes Mellitus Type II (DMII). DMII has become a rampant disease in the United States and is becoming more common. The United States has an alarming rate of new diagnosis of DMII (Chen, 2012). One of the most disappointing facts is that it can be prevented. DMII is not a disease that one has to have for a lifetime. An important detail of this disease is that it has so many comorbidities. Many people in the general population think that they can just take a pill or take insulin to control it. However, even …

Mathematical Modelling Of An Avian Influenza: Optimal Control Study For Intervention Strategies, Chairat Modnak Jul 2017

Mathematical Modelling Of An Avian Influenza: Optimal Control Study For Intervention Strategies, Chairat Modnak

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Avian influenza, caused by influenza A viruses, has drawn attention from scientists worldwide to study its epidemic dynamics. In this paper, we study the spread of bird flu or avian influenza and optimal control theory for intervention strategies from SIR-based model. In addition, we divide human population into five states; Susceptible (S), Vaccinated (V), Exposed (E), Infective (I) and Recovered (R). Equilibrium analysis to investigate the dynamics of the model is carefully derived. We further study the optimal control to seek cost effective for control and treatment strategies. Numerical results show that strategically deployed vaccination and medical treatment can significantly …

Establishing Wmelpop Wolbachia Infection Among Wild Aedes Aegypti Females By Optimal Control Approach, Doris E. Campo-Duarte, Daiver Cardona-Salgado, Olga Vasilieva

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Wolbachia is a maternally transmitted bacterial symbiont which is known to reduce the vector competence of mosquitoes and other arthropod species. Therefore, Wolbachia-based biocontrol is regarded as a practicable method for prevention and control of dengue and other arboviral infections. In particular, a deliberate infection of Aedes aegypti females with wMelPop Wolbachia strain makes them almost incapable of transmitting dengue and other arboviruses. In this paper, we present and thoroughly analyze a population dynamics model of interaction between wild Aedes aegypti female mosquitoes and those infected with wMelPop Wolbachia strain, which compete for the same vital resources (food, breeding sites, …

Some Inequalities Of Jensen Type And Lazhar Type For The Class Of Harmonically And Strongly Reciprocally Convex Functions, L. Azocar, M. Bracamonte, J. Medina Jul 2017

Some Inequalities Of Jensen Type And Lazhar Type For The Class Of Harmonically And Strongly Reciprocally Convex Functions, L. Azocar, M. Bracamonte, J. Medina

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In recent years, new classes of convex functions have been introduced in order to generalize the results and to obtain new estimations, in [12], Iscan gave the definition of harmonically convex functions and in [2] Bracamonte et al. extended the concept of harmonically convex functions due to Iscan, and obtained the concept of strongly reciprocally convex functions. We give some inequalities of Jensen type and Lazhar type for the class of harmonically and strongly reciprocally convex functions.

Modelling Reliability Data With Finite Weibull Or Lognormal Mixture Distributions, Emad E. Elmahdy Jul 2017

Modelling Reliability Data With Finite Weibull Or Lognormal Mixture Distributions, Emad E. Elmahdy

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

This paper presents a reliability analysis study of lifetime data based on Weibull and Lognormal distributions models. The main aim of this study is to compare two finite mixture distributions, Weibull mixture distribution (WMD) and Lognormal mixture distribution (LMD) for modelling heterogeneous survival data sets. This paper also provides the characterization of both WMD and LMD. A comparison of fitted cumulative distribution functions, probability density functions, hazard functions, reliability functions and the mean lifetime is obtained for different distribution models. The expectation-maximization (EM) and Levenberg-Marquardt algorithms are used for estimating the parameters of these mixture models. The goodness of fit …

Dynamics Of Diseased Prey Predator Model With Nonlinear Feedback Control, V. Madhusudanan, B. R.Tapas Bapu

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In this paper we investigate the dynamics of diseased prey- predator system with nonlinear feedback. A nonlinear feedback mathematical model is proposed and analyzed to study the predator interaction with infected prey. We showed that the continuous time diseased prey-predator system can be asymptotically stabilized using nonlinear feedback control. By constructing Lyapunov function, global asymptotic stability is established. Also we obtained necessary control law for asymptotic stability of this system. Finally, a numerical simulation supports our analytical findings
