A Pedagogy Of Care For Adolescent English Learners: A Formative Experiment, Mary Amanda Stewart, Alexandra Babino, Katie Walker

TAPESTRY

In the case of educators of adolescents in the dynamic process of English acquisition, it is our goal to increase the fulfillment and success of the students we are privileged to serve through nurturing their academic, emotional, personal, social, and civic development. It is, therefore, essential that educators understand the implementation and impact of teaching through a framework of care.

Parts Of The Whole: Why I Teach This Subject This Way, Dorothy Wallace Jul 2017

Parts Of The Whole: Why I Teach This Subject This Way, Dorothy Wallace

Numeracy

The importance of mathematics to biology is illustrated by search data from Google Scholar. I argue that a pedagogical approach based on student research projects is likely to improve retention and foster critical thinking about mathematical modeling, as well as reinforce quantitative reasoning and the appreciation of calculus as a tool. The usual features of a course (e.g., the instructor, assessment, text, etc.) are shown to have very different purposes in a research-based course.

Figures And First Years: An Analysis Of Calculus Students' Use Of Figures In Technical Reports, Nathan J. Antonacci, Michael Rogers, Thomas J. Pfaff, Jason G. Hamilton

Numeracy

This three-year study focused on first-year Calculus I students and their abilities to incorporate figures in technical reports. In each year, these calculus students wrote a technical report as part of the Polar Bear Module, an educational unit developed for use in partner courses in biology, computer science, mathematics, and physics as part of the Multidisciplinary Sustainability Education (MSE) project at Ithaca College. In the first year of the project, students received basic technical report guidelines. In year two, the report guidelines changed to include explicit language on how to incorporate figures. In year three, a grading rubric was added …

Ten Years, Twenty Issues, And Two Hundred Papers Of Numeracy: Toward International Reach And Transdisciplinary Utility, H. L. Vacher

Numeracy

This issue completes the first ten years of Numeracy. The purpose of this introductory editorial is to review what has happened to the journal in those ten years. In the twenty issues, Numeracy’s output has been 201 papers counting the one or two editorials per issue. More than 50% of the papers are full, peer-reviewed articles, including 13 papers in two theme collections. The others are peer-reviewed notes and perspectives, editor-reviewed book reviews (15% of the total), and a column by contributing co-editor, Dorothy Wallace. The current issue marks an upswing in the number of notes, and our …

31p Nmr Study Of Gtp-Cation Interactions, Zhiyan Song, Destiny L. Allen, Olarongbe Olubajo, Chellu S. Chetty

Georgia Journal of Science

Guanosine 5'-triphosphate (GTP) plays a pivotal role in many biological processes. The interactions of cations with GTP are essential to the stabilization of this nucleotide and the regulation of its functions. In this study, we present solution 31P NMR data on GTP samples in varied salt concentrations or pHs. From chemical shifts and T1 , T2 relaxations, it is concluded that the interaction strengths of cations with GTP are in the order of Ca2+ > Mg2+ > Li+ > Na+ for the cations, and in the order of beta > gamma > alpha for the phosphate groups. An …

Inside Creationism's Trojan Horse: A Closer Look At Intelligent Design, Barbara Carroll Forrest Jul 2017

Inside Creationism's Trojan Horse: A Closer Look At Intelligent Design, Barbara Carroll Forrest

Georgia Journal of Science

Intelligent design (ID) creationists at the Discovery Institute's Center for Science and Culture claim to be advocating good science and education. Although they promote ID as a "full-scale scientific revolution," it is really the newest variant of American creationism. Proponents have no scientific data to support their contention that a supernatural designer explains biological phenomena better than natural processes. They have waged a thirteen-year PR and political campaign to translate their religious views, which include religious exclusionism and antisecularism, into public policy. Only six states remain exempt from their attempts to influence science standards, curricula, or textbooks. When approaching educational …

The Distribution Of Saperda Inornata And Oberea Schaumii (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) Within The Crowns Of Large Trembling Aspens, Populus Tremuloides, John C. Nord, Fred B. Knight

The Great Lakes Entomologist

The larvae of Saperda inornata Say and Oberea schaumii LeConte inhabit the stems of trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michaux) root suckers and the twigs of larger trees. Nord et al. (1972a, 1972b) reported the biologies of these species in Upper Michigan and northern Wisconsin. S. inornata has a one or two year life cycle, probably depending on how early the egg is laid. Most (77.5%) 0. schaumii develop in three years while 5.0% require only two years and 17.5% require four years to develop.

Knight (1963) described the distribution of galleries made by S. inornata and 0. schaumii in …

A Life History Study Of Caecilius Aurantiacus (Hagen) (Psocoptera: Caeciliidae), R. Scott Dunham

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Caecilius aurantiacus is a common, widely distributed psocid in well established forested areas of North America. Published information on this species is fragmentary and limited primarily to taxonomy. This paper is a description of the habits and biology of this small, little-known, but common insect. Of the 212 named species in the genus Caecilius (Smithers, 1967), the bionomics of only Caecilius manteri have been published.

Some Stenus Latr, From Michigan (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae) 107th Contribution To The Knowledge Of Steninae, Volker Puthz

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Our knowledge of the nearctic Stenus-fauna is very poor. The main work on the Steninae has been done at the end of the last century by the well-known coleopterist Th. L. Casey who is known for his peculiar systematic methods. He published the "Revision of the Stenini of America North of Mexico.. ." (Philadelphia, 1884), in which he described about 80% of the known species from North America.

Last year I had the opportunity to revise all the types of the Casey Collection in the U.S. National Museum, Washington, D.C. and found numerous synonyms which wiU be published in …

New And Little-Known Agromyzidae From Michigan (Diptera: Acalyptratae), George C. Steyskal Jul 2017

New And Little-Known Agromyzidae From Michigan (Diptera: Acalyptratae), George C. Steyskal

The Great Lakes Entomologist

The latest major work on North American Agromyzidae, The Agromyzidae of Canada and Alaska (Spencer, 1969), lists 290 regional species. Of that number, half (147) are new species and 23 are previously described species newly recorded for the continent. It is thus evident that the North American Agromyzid fauna is still poorly known. Among material recently determined for the collection of Michigan State University, East Lansing, were the 5 additional new species herein described. A male allotype for Melanagromyza inornata Spencer (1969), described from the female only, is also described, and more detailed figures of the male postabdomen of Melanagromyza …

Spanish Entomology: Past And Present, M.G. De Viedma

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Excerpt: The history of pure entomology in Spain begins during the Eighteenth Century and continues until today with emphasis upon systematics. The reasons for this are several, but chief among them must be mentioned the extraordinary richness and diversity of the Iberian entomological fauna. This peninsula was a landbridge that in earlier geological times linked Europe and Africa. It is highly zoned and stratified, and supports a variety of faunal elements including European, Mediterranean, African, Atlantic and indigenous. This rich fauna, together with a paucity of skilled entomologists, has resulted in insufficient study of Iberian insects. Except for the Orthoptera, …

Convolutional Neural Networks In Medical Imaging, Mitchell Finzel

Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal

Over the past 5 years there has been an increase in the use of convolutional neural networks in a broad variety of medical imaging applications. This is due in part to the increase in their popularity since their success in the 2012 ImageNet competition, but is also due to their adaptability across a range of medical imaging applications. These applications vary greatly; from the segmentation of knee cartilage to the detection of Alzheimer's disease in MRIs and much more. In this paper we will go over some of the cutting edge techniques being used specifically for the tasks of brain …

Darwin And Dennett: The Operationalist Debate And The Teleological Response, John W. Roorda Jul 2017

Darwin And Dennett: The Operationalist Debate And The Teleological Response, John W. Roorda

Episteme

The author of this paper makes an analogy between the 20th century debate in artificial intelligence and the 18th and 19th century debate concerning the design of the natural world. In the more recent disagreement, Turing and Searle represent the two poles in the AI discussion of computers and intentionality. In the earlier debate, the author identifies theologian William Paley and Hume as opposites, displaying arguments quite similar to those raised in the contemporary hot topic of AI. The author ends his overview of both debates by introducing the argument that moves the topic into a direction that makes use …

Revalidation Of Three Recently Synonymized Cuban Species Of Heteroctenus Pocock, 1893 (Scorpiones: Buthidae: Centruroidinae), Luis F. De Armas Jul 2017

Revalidation Of Three Recently Synonymized Cuban Species Of Heteroctenus Pocock, 1893 (Scorpiones: Buthidae: Centruroidinae), Luis F. De Armas

Euscorpius

The scorpion genus Heteroctenus Pocock, 1893 was restored from synonymy with Rhopalurus in a recent revision by Esposito et al. (2017). Here, we restore two eastern Cuban species Heteroctenus melloleitaoi (Teruel et Armas, 2006) and H. aridicola (Teruel et Armas, 2012) as valid species. They were synonymized by Esposito et al. (2017) under Heteroctenus junceus (Herbst, 1800), without examination of corresponding specimens and with erroneous interpretations of some aspects of the original descriptions. Heteroctenus granulimanus (Teruel, 2006) is also restored as a valid species. The subfamily Rhopalurusinae Bücherl, 1971 is regarded as a junior synonym of Cen-truroidinae Kraus, 1955.

Normal Breast Tissue Dna Methylation Differences At Regulatory Elements Are Associated With The Cancer Risk Factor Age., Kevin C Johnson, E Andres Houseman, Jessica E King, Brock C Christensen

Faculty Research 2017

BACKGROUND: The underlying biological mechanisms through which epidemiologically defined breast cancer risk factors contribute to disease risk remain poorly understood. Identification of the molecular changes associated with cancer risk factors in normal tissues may aid in determining the earliest events of carcinogenesis and informing cancer prevention strategies.

METHODS: Here we investigated the impact cancer risk factors have on the normal breast epigenome by analyzing DNA methylation genome-wide (Infinium 450 K array) in cancer-free women from the Susan G. Komen Tissue Bank (n = 100). We tested the relation of established breast cancer risk factors, age, body mass index, parity, and …

Capturing Peers', Teachers', And Parents' Joint Contributions To Students' Engagement: An Exploration Of Models, Justin William Vollet Jul 2017

Capturing Peers', Teachers', And Parents' Joint Contributions To Students' Engagement: An Exploration Of Models, Justin William Vollet

Dissertations and Theses

Building on research that has focused on understanding how peers contribute to students' engagement, this dissertation explores the extent to which peer group influences on students' engagement may add to and be contextualized by qualities of the relationships they maintain with their teachers and their parents. To focus on how each of these adult contexts work in concert with peer groups to jointly contribute to changes in students' engagement, the two studies used data on 366 sixth graders which were collected at two time points during their first year of middle school: Peer groups were identified using socio-cognitive mapping; students …

Intestinal Microbiota Diversity Of Pre-Smolt Steelhead (Oncorhynchus Mykiss) Across Six Oregon And Washington Hatcheries, Christina Carrell Yildirimer

Dissertations and Theses

The Pacific Northwest is known for its once-abundant wild salmonid populations that have been in decline for more than 50 years due to habitat destruction and commercial overexploitation. To compensate, federal and state agencies annually release hundreds of thousands of hatchery-reared fish into the wild. However, accumulating data indicate that hatchery fish have lower fitness in natural environments, and that hatchery rearing negatively influences return rates of anadromous salmonids. Recently, mounting evidence revealed that the richness and diversity of intestinal microbial species influence host health. We examined the gut microbiota of pre-migratory hatchery-reared steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss) to assess …

Polymer Nanocomposites And Biomaterials: From Chemical Cross-Linking To 3d Printing, Huseini Patanwala Jul 2017

Polymer Nanocomposites And Biomaterials: From Chemical Cross-Linking To 3d Printing, Huseini Patanwala

Doctoral Dissertations

Part 1:

Aerogel is an open-celled, microporous, solid foam composed of a network of interconnected structures formed by replacing the solvent in wet gel with air. Integrating the intrinsic mechanical and electrical properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with those of an aerogel provides a new class of material with unique multifunctional properties which may find applications not limited to fuel cells, super capacitors and batteries. I attempt at improving the mechanical integrity by first functionalizing the CNTs with carboxylic (-COOH) groups and subsequently cross-linking the CNTs using diisocyanate to form polyurea-CNT (PUA-CNT) composite aerogels. Mechanical properties of the final PUA-CNT …

Novel Durable Antimicrobial Ceramic With Embedded Copper Sub-Microparticles For A Steady-State Release Of Copper Ions, Adam J. Drelich, Jessie Miller, Robert Donofrio, Jaroslaw Drelich Jul 2017

Novel Durable Antimicrobial Ceramic With Embedded Copper Sub-Microparticles For A Steady-State Release Of Copper Ions, Adam J. Drelich, Jessie Miller, Robert Donofrio, Jaroslaw Drelich

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Using pottery clay, porous ceramic stones were molded and then decorated with copper sub-microparticles inside the pores. Copper added antimicrobial functionality to the clay-based ceramic and showed ability in disinfecting water. Populations of both Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumoniae in contaminated water were reduced by >99.9% in 3 h when exposed to an antimicrobial stone. This antimicrobial performance is attributed to a slow release of copper into water at both room and elevated temperatures. Copper is leached by water to produce ion concentrations in water at a level of 0.05–0.20 ppm after 24 to 72 h immersion tests. This concentration …
