Resisting Punitive School Discipline: Perspectives And Practices Of Exemplary Urban Elementary Teachers, Elyse Hambacher
Resisting Punitive School Discipline: Perspectives And Practices Of Exemplary Urban Elementary Teachers, Elyse Hambacher
Education
Drawing on the literature related to classroom management, and culturally relevant critical teacher care, and effective teaching for students of color, this paper uses interview and observation data to explore the perspectives and practices of two exemplary fifth-grade teachers who refuse to rely on punitive discipline with their students of color. Findings revealed that the teachers did not view students’ behavior as challenging-- they viewed behavior simply as one of the many areas they believed it was their responsibility to teach. Their instructional practices focused on coaching students to reach their potential and liberating them from barriers that limit their …

Potential Recovery From Drought-Induced Dieback In A Keystone Chaparral Species, Malosma Laurina, Guinevere X. Mesh, Natalie M. Aguirre, Stephen D. Davis
Featured Research
After five years of protracted drought and water-related dieback and mortality, the coastal chaparral ecosystems of the Santa Monica Mountains have finally received increased precipitation. As a co-dominant plant species in this region, Malosma laurina (common name Laurel Sumac), provides an important indication of environmental change. This study examines the effect of the increased precipitation of the 2016-2017 rainy season on potential recovery from drought-induced dieback in M. laurina. This study shows a significant increase in tissue hydration levels and photosynthetic production of dieback plants during post-drought recovery (2017) and between irrigated control sites and dieback sites.

Rain-Induced Changes In Soil Co2 Flux And Microbial Community Composition In A Tropical Forest Of China, Qi Deng, Dafeng Hui, Guowei Chu, Xi Han, Quanfa Zhang
Biology Faculty Research
Rain-induced soil CO2 pulse, a rapid excitation in soil CO2 flux after rain, is ubiquitously observed in terrestrial ecosystems, yet the underlying mechanisms in tropical forests are still not clear. We conducted a rain simulation experiment to quantify rain-induced changes in soil CO2 flux and microbial community composition in a tropical forest. Soil CO2 flux rapidly increased by ~83% after rains, accompanied by increases in both bacterial (~51%) and fungal (~58%) Phospholipid Fatty Acids (PLFA) biomass. However, soil CO2 flux and microbial community in the plots without litters showed limited response to rains. Direct releases …

Understanding The Role Of Family Management In Ethnically Diverse Children With Adhd, Cynthia P. Paidipati, Bridgette Brawner, Ricardo Eiraldi, Connie M. Ulrich, Jamil M. Lane, Janet A. Deatrick
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Purpose: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is the most common neurodevelopmental condition of childhood with a prevalence rate of 5 to 11% in the United States (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2015). Family, especially caregivers, are considered an important and integral aspect to the care, management, and well-being of children with ADHD (Bussing & Lall, 2010; Cunningham, 2007; Davis, Claudiu, Palinkas, Wong, & Leslie, 2012; DeMarle, Denk, & Ernsthausen, 2003; Dishion & Stormshak, 2007). The literature suggests that the behavioral management by families is a key determinant in treatment outcomes (Bussing & Gary, 2001). In fact, prior research …

Knowledge, Attitudes, And Competency About Providing Perinatal Care To Women With Disabilities, Lorraine Byrnes
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Purpose: Women who are disabled (n=8 million) account for approximately 11% of the childbearing population in the U.S. today. Although there are no available population based studies that report incidence and prevalence of pregnancy and birth in this population, smaller studies find that many women who are disabled desire biological children and plan to become mothers. The majority of women with disabilities report a physical disability (51%) followed by mental disabilities (30%) and sensory disabilities (19%). The purpose of this study is to describe the knowledge, attitudes, and perceived competencies about providing perinatal care to women with disabilities by nurse …

Modeling De Novo Granulation Of Anaerobic Sludge, Anna Doloman, Honey Varghese, Charles D. Miller, Nicholas Flann
Computer Science Faculty and Staff Publications
Background: A unique combination of mechanical, physiochemical and biological forces influences granulation during processes of anaerobic digestion. Understanding this process requires a systems biology approach due to the need to consider not just single-cell metabolic processes, but also the multicellular organization and development of the granule.
Results: In this computational experiment, we address the role that physiochemical and biological processes play in granulation and provide a literature-validated working model of anaerobic granule de novo formation. The agent-based model developed in a cDynoMiCs simulation environment successfully demonstrated a de novo granulation in a glucose fed system, with the average specific methanogenic …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021
The functional application of metallic glasses in the catalytic field has widely attracted research attention due to its unique atomic structure compared to crystalline materials. It has been reported that metallic glasses can effectively activate H2O2 and persulfate, yet the activation of peroxymonosulfate by metallic glasses is not studied well. In this work, the metallic glass with atomic composition of Fe78Si9B13 was applied for investigating the peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation on degradation of naphthol green B (NGB) dye. The change of surface morphology indicated the important role of oxide films during the dye …

“That Pain Is Genuine To Them”: Provider Perspectives On Chronic Pain In University Student Populations, Alexandra C.H. Nowakowski, Kaitlyn E. Barningham, Charlyn D. Buford, Martin Laguerre, J. E. Sumerau
The Qualitative Report
We explored provider attitudes about and experiences in chronic pain management for university student populations. Our central question was: “What do providers at a large university campus health care center experience in the process of offering pain management services?” We explored instrumental, behavioral, emotional, and attitudinal dimensions of our participants’ experiences using a qualitative case study approach. Data were gathered through semi-structured interviews with 10 health care providers at the student health center for a large research university in Florida. Interviews captured providers’ background and experiences in providing pain management to student patients with diverse needs. We used grounded theory …
Assessing The Utility Of Phenylene Ethynylenes Against Candida Species Pathogens, Rina Sylejmani
Assessing The Utility Of Phenylene Ethynylenes Against Candida Species Pathogens, Rina Sylejmani
Biomedical Engineering ETDs
Candida species are the cause of many bloodstream infections through contamination of indwelling medical devices. These infections account for a 40% mortality rate, posing a significant risk to immunocompromised patients. Traditional treatments against Candida infections include amphotericin B and various azole treatments. Unfortunately, these treatments are associated with high toxicity, and resistant strains have become more prevalent. As a new frontier, light-activated phenylene ethynylenes have shown promising biocidal activity against Gram-positive and -negative bacterial pathogens, as well as the environmental yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae. In this thesis, we monitored the viability of Candida species after treatment with a cationic conjugated …

Afro-Peruvian Creoles: A Social And Political History Of Afro-Descended Peruvians In An Era Of Nationalism And Scientific Racism, Daniel S. Cozart
History ETDs
This dissertation analyzes the history of Afro-descended Peruvians after the abolition of slavery in 1854 until the census of 1940, which asserted that Afro-Peruvians comprised less than two percent of the national population. It combines analyses of primary and secondary sources to examine Afro-Peruvian historical agency, demographic erasure and the politics of censuses, contested definitions of race and citizenship, self-representation in politics, culture, and the arts, as well as the labor history of Afro-Peruvians. The dissertation builds on the framing of Atlantic History to revise prior assumptions that Afro-Peruvians nearly disappeared from census records in the twentieth century because they …

Developmental Origins Of The Human Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal Axis, Mariann A. Howland, Curt A. Sandman, Laura M. Glynn
Psychology Faculty Articles and Research
Introduction: The developmental origins of disease or fetal programming model predicts that intrauterine exposures have life-long consequences for physical and psychological health. Prenatal programming of the fetal hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is proposed as a primary mechanism by which early experiences are linked to later disease risk.
Areas covered: This review describes the development of the fetal HPA axis, which is determined by an intricately timed cascade of endocrine events during gestation and is regulated by an integrated maternal-placental-fetal steroidogenic unit. Mechanisms by which stress-induced elevations in hormones of maternal, fetal, or placental origin influence the structure and function …

The Occurrence And Distribution Of Heterandria Formosa (Teleostei, Poeciliidae) In Lowndes County, Georgia, Jason C. Chaney, David L. Bechler
Georgia Journal of Science
Heretofore in the literature, Heterandria formosa had not been reported from Lowndes County, Georgia. Based on a survey of Lowndes County; we discovered eight localities from the southeastern portion of the county that collectively produced 30 specimens of H. formosa. The southeastern portion of the county is primarily flatwoods with numerous wetlands and low gradient streams compared to the remainder of the county, which is typified by a more upland habitat with greater relief and greater stream gradients. It is postulated that the greater stream gradients inhibited the migration of H. formosa into the southwestern and northern portions of …

Therapeutic antibodies have become one of the most effective therapeutics for human diseases such as cancer, inflammation and viral infection. The production of antibody-based drugs using microbial expression systems is more cost effective with ease of gene manipulation compared to mammalian expression systems. In our team, antibody fragments (ex: BsAb, scFv and Fab) were produced from methylotrophic yeast Pichia pastoris secretion expression system with the AOX1 as driven promoter or E. coli secretion expression system. To achieve high production yield for both system, we investigated fermentation parameter such as base medium, induction medium, induction condition, feeding strategy and pH. For …

The Effect Of Fabric Type And Laundering Conditions On The Detection Of Semen Stains, Tyler G. Schlagetter, Claire L. Glynn
Forensic Science Publications
There has been little research into the effect of fabric type and different laundering conditions on the ability to detect semen stains on washed fabrics. This study aimed to investigate three potential factors affecting semen identification on laundered clothing: fabric type, water temperature during washing, and whether the stain was dry at the time of washing. Following laundering, semen stains on four fabric types (cotton, polyester, denim, and wool) were examined and tested with three common methods used to detect semen; screening with an alternate light source, acid phosphatase press test, and histological staining of spermatazoa. It was determined that …

Application Of Phage Display And Plasmid Display To Broaden The Specificity Of Human Fbs1 For Capture Of N-Glycosylated Peptides, James C. Samuelson
Biochemical and Molecular Engineering XX
The objective of this study was to develop a method for selective and comprehensive enrichment of N-linked glycopeptides to facilitate biomarker discovery. The natural function of human Fbs1 is to bind misfolded N-linked glycoproteins by recognition of the common pentasaccharide core motif (Man3GlcNAc2) of the N-glycan. We show that Fbs1 is able to bind diverse types of N-linked glycomolecules, however, wild-type Fbs1 preferentially binds high mannose containing glycans. To reduce the bias during N-glycomolecule enrichment experiments, we isolated Fbs1 variants with altered specificity through mutagenesis and plasmid display selection. Five cycles of E. coli propagation and in vitro panning against …
