Transnarratives Of Adults Who Undergo Gender Transitioning Later In Life: Implications For Counselors, Nakeshi Lashae Dyer
Transnarratives Of Adults Who Undergo Gender Transitioning Later In Life: Implications For Counselors, Nakeshi Lashae Dyer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
In this transgender theory life story study, I interviewed male-to-female transgender participants who transitioned between the ages of 40-55, within the last 5 years, and while residing in an urban city in the Mid-South to learn more about the sociocultural and discursive influences of their gendered and embodied experiences. I utilized transgender theory as a lens to view gender transitioning. This theory holds that discourse is contrived and identity is fluid, contextual, and mulifarious and that some voices are silenced because of exclusionary societal practices and systems of belief. The longer that a person is subjected to these oppressive systems …

Westward Expansion Of The Evening Bat (Nycticeius Humeralis) In The United States, With Notes On The First Record From New Mexico, Brett R. Andersen, Keith Geluso, Hans W. Otto, Larisa Bishop-Boros
Westward Expansion Of The Evening Bat (Nycticeius Humeralis) In The United States, With Notes On The First Record From New Mexico, Brett R. Andersen, Keith Geluso, Hans W. Otto, Larisa Bishop-Boros
Western North American Naturalist
The general lack of trees in the Great Plains has limited colonization by eastern woodland mammals in the past, but recent expansion of forests in corridors along prairie waterways and in towns has enabled an assortment of woodland species to expand distributional ranges westward. The evening bat (Nycticeius humeralis) historically occurred in woodlands throughout the eastern United States. Following our capture of the first evening bat in New Mexico, we updated the distributional range for this species by amassing recent records from published literature and museum voucher records west of its historic range published in 1981, the last …

A Surprising Discovery Of American Pika Sites In The Northwestern Great Basin, Mackenzie R. Jeffress, K. Jane Van Gunst, Constance I. Miller
Western North American Naturalist
Although the American pika (Ochotona princeps) continues to receive attention due to documented declines and range retractions, particularly in the Great Basin, thorough range inventories have yet to be completed in many parts of the region. Here we report on recently discovered populations in northwestern Nevada in areas not suspected to support pika activity under current climate regimes. We describe 238 new locations (“sites”) with evidence of past or current occupancy by pikas which cluster into 31 locales, which we interpret as metapopulations or “demes,” in 15 distinct mountain ranges or geographic areas. We documented twice as many …
Germination Of Netleaf Hackberry Seeds On The North Sides Of Boulders: A Shift Away From Patterns Of Mature Hackberry Distribution?, Michael T. Stevens, Daniel L. Holland
Germination Of Netleaf Hackberry Seeds On The North Sides Of Boulders: A Shift Away From Patterns Of Mature Hackberry Distribution?, Michael T. Stevens, Daniel L. Holland
Western North American Naturalist
Because limited numbers of netleaf hackberry (Celtis reticulata) seedlings are observed in nature, we evaluated patterns of germination of hackberry seeds (n = 2545) that we planted near boulders in the Wasatch Mountain foothills. Seeds were followed over 2 growing seasons. Germination rates were very low overall, but significantly more seeds germinated on the north sides of boulders compared to other boulder aspects. That we found higher rates of germination on the north sides of boulders, instead of on the south sides of boulders where mature hackberry shrubs tend to grow, could reflect year-to-year variation in seed …
The Call Of Duty And Beyond: Problems Concerning Justification And Virtue In The Ethical Models Of Epistemology, Peter J. Tedesco
The Call Of Duty And Beyond: Problems Concerning Justification And Virtue In The Ethical Models Of Epistemology, Peter J. Tedesco
Episteme
Internalist considerations are crucial to a good theory of belief formation—epistemic or ethical. To get to this conclusion, the author first shows the insufficiency of a strong externalist account of true belief; he critique’s Plantinga’s reliabilism by way of demonstration. Plantinga’s idea of epistemic warrant shares a maximum ideal with utilitarianism (the desire for the most true beliefs), but the good intentions of the theory are undermined by 1) the author’s car counter-example that illustrates the relevance of internal circumstances, and 2) a realization that Plantinga pays no mind to volition variance. Next, the author analyzes Linda Trinkaus Zagzebski’s virtue …

Background
Blue sharks (Prionace glauca) are among the most abundant and widely distributed of oceanic elasmobranchs. Millions are taken annually in pelagic longline fisheries and comprise the highest component of auctioned fin weight in the international shark fin trade. Though studies of blue sharks outnumber those of other large pelagic sharks, the species’ complicated and sexually segregated life history still confound current understanding of Atlantic movement patterns. Lack of detailed information regarding movement and vertical behavior continues to limit management efforts that require such data for stock assessment and sustainable catch modeling. Therefore, this study aims to describe …

The biological function of sterol glucosides (SGs), the most abundant sterol derivatives in higher plants, remains uncertain. In an effort to improve our understanding of these membrane lipids we examined phenotypes exhibited by the roots of Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) lines carrying insertions in the UDP-Glc:sterol glucosyltransferase genes, UGT80A2 and UGT80B1. We show that although ugt80A2 mutants exhibit significantly lower levels of total SGs they are morphologically indistinguishable from wild-type plants. In contrast, the roots of ugt80B1 mutants are only deficient in stigmasteryl glucosides but exhibit a significant reduction in root hairs. Sub-cellular investigations reveal that the plasma membrane …

When You Aren't Who Your Friends Are: The Moderating Influence Of Racial Similarity On The Association Between Friendships And Mental Well-Being, Philip Tostado
Dissertations and Theses
Friendships are a mental health resource for adolescents. Their availability and strength have been shown to predict lower levels of depression, higher self-esteem, and higher life satisfaction. They can also alleviate the stress that often leads to negative mental health outcomes. However, studies examining the stress process rarely consider the fact that social networks like friendship groups are not a static resource that effects all people the same way. Rather, demographic characteristics of both the individual and their friends could change the role of friendship networks within the stress process.
In this thesis, I investigate the importance of one such …

Pixuna virus (PIXV) is an enzootic member of the Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis Virus complex and belongs to the New World cluster of alphaviruses. Herein we explore the role of the cellular cytoskeleton during PIXV replication. We first identified that PIXV undergoes an eclipse phase consisting of 4 h followed by 20 h of an exponential phase in Vero cells. The infected cells showed morphological changes due to structural modifications in actin microfilaments (MFs) and microtubules (MTs). Cytoskeletonbinding agents, that alter the architecture and dynamics of MFs and MTs, were used to study the role of cytoskeleton on PIXV replication. The …

Working Together To Treat Tobacco Dependence Among Smokers With Serious Mental Illness, Rhonda Garrett Schwindt, Karen Hudmon, Kathy Lay, Angela Mcnelis, Jon Agley
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
The prevalence of tobacco use among persons with mental illness exceeds the prevalence in the general population by a factor of 2 to 4. Despite strong evidence that tobacco cessation counseling by a health professional can approximately double patients" odds of quitting, clinicians across disciplines are reluctant to offer these individuals effective means by which to quit smoking. The purpose of this pilot study was to estimate the impact of an interprofessional tobacco education program on the perceived self-efficacy and self-rated counseling abilities of graduate health professions students to provide tobacco cessation counseling and their perceptions of interprofessional collaborative practice.

Previously, we only apply a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) Danshen-Chuanxiong-Honghua (DCH) for cardioprotection via anti-inflammation in rats of acute myocardial infarction by occluding coronary artery. Presently, we select not only DCH but also its main absorbed compound ferulic acid (FA) for cerebra protection via similar action of mechanism above in animals of the transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (tMCAO). We investigated whether oral administration of DCH and FA could ameliorate MCAO-induced brain lesions in animals. By using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), we analyzed four compounds, including tanshinol, salvianolic acid B, hydroxysafflor yellow A and especially FA as the putative …

Topic modeling is a technique for reducing dimensionality of large corpuses of text. Latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA), the most prevalent form of topic modeling, improved upon earlier methods by introducing Bayesian iterative updates, providing a sound theoretical basis for modeling by iteration. Yet a piece of the modeling puzzle remains unsolved; the number of topics to model, K, is an as yet unanswered question. This number of topics may also be called the dimensionality of the model. With this is an integrally related puzzle; how to determine when a model has been best fit. Presented here are a brief history …

BACKGROUND: The tumor microenvironment often polarizes infiltrating macrophages towards a type 2, or M2 phenotype, that is characterized by expression of various cysteine-rich, scavenger receptors, including CD163. The primary function of M2 macrophages is to facilitate wound healing. As such, they are capable of providing metabolic support to a growing tumor, neovascularization, as well as protection from cytotoxic T cells. The tumor microenvironment contains a milieu of secreted factors and vesicles, which in certain circumstances can gain access to lymphatic vessels that drain to local lymph nodes.

Menthol belongs to monoterpene class of a structurally diverse group of phytochemicals found in plant-derived essential oils. Menthol is widely used in pharmaceuticals, confectionary, oral hygiene products, pesticides, cosmetics, and as a flavoring agent. In addition, menthol is known to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic effects. Recently, there has been renewed awareness in comprehending the biological and pharmacological effects of menthol. TRP channels have been demonstrated to mediate the cooling actions ofmenthol. There has been new evidence demonstrating thatmenthol can significantly influence the functional characteristics of a number of different kinds of ligand and voltage-gated ion channels, indicating that at …

Oligo(Ethylene Glycol)-Sidechain Microgels Prepared In Absence Of Cross-Linking Agent: Polymerization, Characterization And Variation Of Particle Deformability, Nicole Welsch, L. Andrew Lyon
Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research
We present a systematic study of self-cross-linked microgels formed by precipitation polymerization of oligo ethylene glycol methacrylates. The cross-linking density of these microgels and, thus, the network flexibility can be easily tuned through the modulation of the reaction temperature during polymerization. Microgels prepared in absence of any difunctional monomer, i.e. cross-linker, show enhanced deformability and particle spreading on solid surfaces as compared to microgels cross-linked with varying amounts of poly(ethylene glycol diacrylate) (PEG-DA) in addition to self-crosslinking. Particles prepared at low reaction temperatures exhibit the highest degree of spreading due to the lightly cross-linked and flexible polymer network. Moreover, AFM …

Free Will, Determinism, And Moral Responsibility: An Analysis Of Event-Causal Incompatibilism, Gunnar Footh
Philosophy Honors Projects
In this project, I will analyze, summarize, and critique the incompatibilist theory known as source incompatibilism, which argues that a moral agent is morally responsible for an action only if they are the proper source of that action. More specifically, I will analyze the source incompatibilist views of event-causal incompatibilism, which argues that an agent has free will only if there exists indeterminacy in her decision-making process, either before the formation of a decision itself of during the formation of a decision. I will argue that event-causal incompatibilist views suffer from problems of control and moral chanciness. Thus I will …

Resisting Punitive School Discipline: Perspectives And Practices Of Exemplary Urban Elementary Teachers, Elyse Hambacher
Education
Drawing on the literature related to classroom management, and culturally relevant critical teacher care, and effective teaching for students of color, this paper uses interview and observation data to explore the perspectives and practices of two exemplary fifth-grade teachers who refuse to rely on punitive discipline with their students of color. Findings revealed that the teachers did not view students’ behavior as challenging-- they viewed behavior simply as one of the many areas they believed it was their responsibility to teach. Their instructional practices focused on coaching students to reach their potential and liberating them from barriers that limit their …
