Assisted Reproduction Inequality And Marriage Equality, Seema Mohapatra J.D., Mph Jul 2017

Assisted Reproduction Inequality And Marriage Equality, Seema Mohapatra J.D., Mph

Chicago-Kent Law Review

In Obergefell v. Hodges, Justice Kennedy declared that “marriage is fundamental under the Constitution and [should] apply with equal force to same-sex couples.” This Article examines how the advent of marriage equality may impact the rights of same-sex couples to have biological children via assisted reproduction and surrogacy. Specifically, this Article points out the ways that the Obergefell decision affects the law of infertility. By the law of infertility, I mean the laws that require insurance coverage of infertility treatments and other assisted reproductive technologies (“ART”). Because same-sex couples are not able to have biological children with each other …

Parents, Babies, And More Parents, June Carbone, Naomi Cahn Jul 2017

Parents, Babies, And More Parents, June Carbone, Naomi Cahn

Chicago-Kent Law Review

This Article makes two basic points. First, the three-parent family is here. Once states accept that parenthood does not depend on either biology or marriage, then three parents are inevitable unless the states go out of their way to rule that adults who otherwise meet their definitions of parenthood will not be recognized. Second, as three-parent family recognition increases, there are difficult questions on how to manage the status of each parent. This difficulty arises because the two major trends in the family law—the recognition of a multiplicity of family forms and the insistence on parental equality—are on a collision …

Reforming The Processes For Challenging Voluntary Acknowledgments Of Paternity, Jeffrey A. Parness, David A. Saxe Jul 2017

Reforming The Processes For Challenging Voluntary Acknowledgments Of Paternity, Jeffrey A. Parness, David A. Saxe

Chicago-Kent Law Review

Voluntary acknowledgements of paternity (VAPs) significantly determine male legal parentage at birth for many children born of sex to unwed mothers in the United States. VAP processes are chiefly dictated by the federal Social Security Act, which places certain mandates on states participating in federally-subsidized welfare programs. These processes include norms on effective VAP establishments and on VAP disestablishments, either via early rescissions (within sixty days) by signatories or via later contests (after sixty days) by challengers, including signatories. The norms are driven by the Act’s desire to increase reimbursements of state child welfare payments from unwed fathers regardless of …

The Loaded Squat, Gianluca Scerri Jul 2017

The Loaded Squat, Gianluca Scerri

Honors College Theses

Although torque on the knee joints and it’s various supporting structures has been shown to increase when an individual allows for their knees to track farther over their toes, this action alone should not stop an individual from performing a squat, because of a possible fear of “damaging” their knees. Instead, the individual should take three main aspects of proper squat technique into consideration, in order to maximize their squat potential using a barbell. These include: the force being placed upon their lumbar spine and the stability of the trunk, proper ankle dorsiflexion, and adequate knee flexion.

This thesis will …

Open Source Software For Automatic Detection Of Cone Photoreceptors In Adaptive Optics Ophthalmoscopy Using Convolutional Neural Networks, David Cunefare, Leyuan Fang, Robert F. Cooper, Alfredo Dubra, Joseph Carroll, Sina Farsiu

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Imaging with an adaptive optics scanning light ophthalmoscope (AOSLO) enables direct visualization of the cone photoreceptor mosaic in the living human retina. Quantitative analysis of AOSLO images typically requires manual grading, which is time consuming, and subjective; thus, automated algorithms are highly desirable. Previously developed automated methods are often reliant on ad hoc rules that may not be transferable between different imaging modalities or retinal locations. In this work, we present a convolutional neural network (CNN) based method for cone detection that learns features of interest directly from training data. This cone-identifying algorithm was trained and validated on separate data …

Disentangling Sources Of Variation In Ssu Rdna Sequences From Single Cell Analyses Of Ciliates: Impact Of Copy Number Variation And Experimental Error, Chundi Wang, Tengteng Zhang, Yurui Wang, Laura A. Katz, Feng Gao, Weibo Song Jul 2017

Disentangling Sources Of Variation In Ssu Rdna Sequences From Single Cell Analyses Of Ciliates: Impact Of Copy Number Variation And Experimental Error, Chundi Wang, Tengteng Zhang, Yurui Wang, Laura A. Katz, Feng Gao, Weibo Song

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Small subunit ribosomal DNA (SSU rDNA) is widely used for phylogenetic inference, barcoding and other taxonomy-based analyses. Recent studies indicate that SSU rDNA of ciliates may have a high level of sequence variation within a single cell, which impacts the interpretation of rDNA-based surveys. However, sequence variation can come from a variety of sources including experimental errors, especially the mutations generated by DNA polymerase in PCR. In the present study, we explore the impact of four DNA polymerases on sequence variation and find that low-fidelity polymerases exaggerate the estimates of single-cell sequence variation. Therefore, using a polymerase with high fidelity …

Androgyny, Yu-Chi Chien Jul 2017

Androgyny, Yu-Chi Chien

Theses

Cognition is a mental activity during which information is received through perception and judgment. From birth people gradually construct their own cognitive understanding of the world. Predecessors often transmit their own past experiences to others in order to efficiently build up the values that they think are correct. For constructing cognition easily and rapidly, predecessors tend to generalize and simplify the information so that others can readily understand and judge, but it is often distorted and doesn’t express the full meaning inside.

People have the ability to explore their own answer for everything. However, after the process of simplifying information …

An Examination Of The Impostor Phenomenon And Psychological Distress In Graduate Counseling Students, Jennifer Anne Drabowicz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The impostor phenomenon is commonly identified by a distinct set of psychological and behavioral symptoms that are grounded in a pervasive sense of fraudulence or intellectual phoniness. Experiences of impostor symptoms are frequently associated in the literature with increased likelihood of simultaneously experiencing symptoms of psychological distress including depression and anxiety. The present study intended to address a gap in the literature by exploring the relationship between symptoms of the impostor phenomenon and specific student demographic variables (student degree program and student enrollment status), psychological distress variables (anxiety, depression, and perceived stress), and student help-seeking behavior in counseling graduate students …

Microfeatures Of Modern Sea-Ice-Rafted Sediment And Implications For Paleo-Sea-Ice Reconstructions, Kristen E. St. John, Sandra Passchier, Brooke Tantillo, Dennis Darby, Lance Kearns

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Distinguishing sea-ice-rafted debris (SIRD) from iceberg-rafted debris is crucial to an interpretation of ice-rafting history; however, there are few paleo-sea-ice proxies. This study characterizes quartz grain microfeatures of modern SIRD from the Arctic Ocean, and compares these results with microfeatures from representative glacial deposits to potentially differentiate SIRD from ice-rafted sediments which have been recently subjected to glacial processes. This allows us to evaluate the use of grain microfeatures as a paleo-sea-ice proxy. SIRD grains were largely subrounded, with medium relief, pervasive silica dissolution and a high abundance of breakage blocks and microlayering. The glacial grains were more angular, with …

Optimizing Heart Failure Outcomes Through Diet: A Review, Farley B. Neasman Iii Jul 2017

Optimizing Heart Failure Outcomes Through Diet: A Review, Farley B. Neasman Iii

Marshall Journal of Medicine

Heart failure is a growing epidemic that will add significant monetary and human costs to an already overtaxed health-care system. Though promising new medications have recently been approved, this complex condition is largely preventable through aggressive risk factor modification, with diet being shown to have a greater effect than exercise. An underrated component of a healthy diet is the simple addition of nuts – the anti-inflammatory fatty acids, healthy proteins, and general availability have been shown to improve survival and reduce the primary risk factors contributing to heart failure, making the addition of nuts and legumes to the diet an …
