Glucose Recovery From Different Corn Stover Fractions Using Dilute Acid And Alkaline Pretreatment Techniques, D. Aboagye, N. Banadda, R. Kambugu, Jeffrey Seay, N. Kiggundu, A. Zziwa, I. Kabenge

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

Background: Limited availability of corn stover due to the competing uses (organic manure, animal feed, bio-materials, and bioenergy) presents a major concern for its future in the bio-economy. Furthermore, biomass research has exhibited different results due to the differences in the supply of enzymes and dissimilar analytical methods. The effect of the two leading pretreatment techniques (dilute acid and alkaline) on glucose yield from three corn stover fractions (cob, stalk, and leaf) sourced from a single harvest in Uganda were studied at temperatures 100, 120, 140, and 160 °C over reaction times of 5, 10, 30, and 60 min.

Ephrin Receptors, Aiy Interneuron Physiology, And Behavior, Tyler Hill Jul 2017

Ephrin Receptors, Aiy Interneuron Physiology, And Behavior, Tyler Hill

Master of Science in Integrative Biology Theses

In order to survive, an organism must be able to receive, integrate, and respond to sensory stimuli. However, the cellular basis of sensory perception and response is difficult to study in complex animals such as humans, and is therefore poorly understood. The nematode Caenorhabditis elegans is a relatively simple organism yet displays many distinct behaviors, making it an ideal system to understand the relationship between gene function, cell shape, cell physiology, and behavioral output. Much of the thermosensory and chemosensory information that the nematode receives from its sensory neurons is processed via a pair of interneurons called AIYL and AIYR. …

Dress And Sex: A Review Of Empirical Research Involving Human Participants And Published In Refereed Journals, Sharron J. Lennon, Alyssa Dana Adomaitis, Jayoung Koo, Kim K. P. Johnson

Publications and Research

Our research purpose was to assess research addressing relationships between dress and sex. Our review was focused on a 25 years span (i.e., 1990–2015) and on empirical research utilizing human participants published in refereed journals. Three main areas of research emerged: (1) dress used as cue to sexual information, (2) dress and sexual violence, and (3) dress, sex, and objectification. Our analyses revealed parents do invest their young children with sex-typed dress however sometimes children demand to wear such dress. Some women intentionally use dress to communicate sexual information but inferences about women who wear sexy dress can be misinterpreted …

Optimization Of Deproteinization Technology On Chondroitin Sulfate With Sevag Method, Xu Suwen, Tan An, Jin Chenzhong, Hu Yihong

Food and Machinery

In order to promote the quality of chondroitin sulfate, Sevag reagent was used to deprotein the extraction of chondroitin sulfate through the single factor and the orthogonal tests to optimize the process of deproteinization. The optimal conditions were ratio of chloroform to isoamyl alcohol 21 (V/V), Sevag reagent dosage 1/2 fold compared with the volume of chondroitin sulfate extraction, treated for 25 min and repeated treatment for 3 times. The factors influenced the extraction in the order of ratio of chloroform to isoamyl alchohol, treatment time , treatment times, and Sevag reagent dosage. Under the optimal conditions, the retention rate of …

Transcriptional Regulation Of Kal-1 In The Nematode Caenorhabditis Elegans, Zachery E. Mielko Jul 2017

Transcriptional Regulation Of Kal-1 In The Nematode Caenorhabditis Elegans, Zachery E. Mielko

Master of Science in Integrative Biology Theses

X-linked Kallmann syndrome (KS) is a genetic disease that is caused by loss-of-function mutations in the human kal-1 gene. The disorder consists of a loss of sense-of-smell coupled with failure to undergo spontaneous puberty. At the cellular level, KS phenotypes are caused by olfactory neurons’ failure to properly migrate to the olfactory bulb. This also prevents gonadotropin-releasing hormone neuroendocrine cells from migrating to the pituitary, preventing the pulsatile release of sex hormones at puberty. While many kal-1 interacting proteins have been studied in model organisms, little is known about the regulatory mechanisms that control kal-1’s expression. Since a 5.27kb …

Evidence Of Language Prerequisites In Pan: Orofacial-Motor And Breath Control In Chimpanzees And Bonobos, Natalie Schwob Jul 2017

Evidence Of Language Prerequisites In Pan: Orofacial-Motor And Breath Control In Chimpanzees And Bonobos, Natalie Schwob

Master of Science in Integrative Biology Theses

Human spoken language requires the concomitant utilization of numerous cognitive and motor skills. Two particularly relevant skills are orofacial-motor control (OFM), the ability to purposefully move one’s facial muscles, and breath control (BC), subglottal air pressure that fuels sound production, as both are necessary in the voluntary production of speech. Many have claimed these competencies are uniquely human qualities without great ape antecedents. However, here we describe both skills in genus Pan, which contains our closest extant relatives: chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) and bonobos (Pan paniscus). We hypothesized that OFM and BC would be present in both species of Pan and …

Nociception And The Experience Of Pain Signaling Due To Nerve Damage, Crystal J. Smith Jul 2017

Nociception And The Experience Of Pain Signaling Due To Nerve Damage, Crystal J. Smith

Master of Science in Integrative Biology Theses

Hyperalgesia is the increased sensitivity to pain which can present itself to many people no matter age or ethnicity. Having the ability to alleviate pain whether it be acute or chronic pain without the use of addictive medication can have the potential to change the course or modern medicine known today. Through the use of zebrafish, this thesis provides a preliminary understanding in pain signal blocking. Three distinct genes have found to be associated with perceiving pain, which include Transient Receptor Potential Ankyrin 1 (TRPA1), Transient Receptor Potential Melestatin 8 (TRPM8), and Cannabinoid Receptor 1 (CNR1). We hypothesize through knockdown …

Controlling Enterohemorrhagic E. Coli O157: H7 Using Selenium And Rutin, Meera Surendran Nair Jul 2017

Controlling Enterohemorrhagic E. Coli O157: H7 Using Selenium And Rutin, Meera Surendran Nair

Doctoral Dissertations

Enterohemorrhagic E.coli O157: H7 (EHEC) has emerged as one of the leading causes of food borne illness and pediatric diarrheal disease in the United States. The EHEC associated life-threatening hemolytic uremic syndrome in human patients is linked to the expression of several virulence factors of the pathogen, especially verotoxins. Verotoxins (VT) or shiga like toxins (Stx) are the major virulence factors elaborated by EHEC. Even after 30 years of research on EHEC epidemiology and pathogenesis, little advancement has been made in disease prevention and treatment against the bacterium. One of the main limitations in treating EHEC infection is the contraindicated …

Chondrocranium And Internal Oral Morphology Of The Tadpole Of Corythomantis Greeningi (Anura: Hylidae), Marianna Isabella Rosa Rodrigues De Oliveira, Luiz Norberto Weber, Rafael O. De Sá, Johnny Sousa Ferreira, Anna Evelin Coimbra Libório, André Masahide Guimarães Takazone Jul 2017

Chondrocranium And Internal Oral Morphology Of The Tadpole Of Corythomantis Greeningi (Anura: Hylidae), Marianna Isabella Rosa Rodrigues De Oliveira, Luiz Norberto Weber, Rafael O. De Sá, Johnny Sousa Ferreira, Anna Evelin Coimbra Libório, André Masahide Guimarães Takazone

Biology Faculty Publications

Corythomantis greeningi is a casque-headed frog that occurs in xeric and sub-humid regions of northeastern Brazil. Individuals are often found on rocks on banks of temporary streams or in ponds upon “lajedos”. Suctorial tadpoles are often found clasping to the rocks in the streams so as not to be dragged by the current; therefore, they have modified external and internal morphology. Here, we describe the internal oral anatomy and the chondrocranium of the tadpole of C. greeningi and compare it to the available descriptions of Lophyohylinae and other suctorial tadpoles. The internal oral morphology in C. greeningi resembles pond-dwelling casque-headed …

Nutrient Additions Alter Semi-Arid Grassland Response To Fire, Alec A. Carrigy Jul 2017

Nutrient Additions Alter Semi-Arid Grassland Response To Fire, Alec A. Carrigy

Biology ETDs

Knowledge of how multiple global change drivers interact to affect community structure is critical for predicting future community states, especially when community structure drives ecosystem function. Disturbances such as fire and nutrient additions often shift communities away from their mean composition, but less is known about how disturbances affect spatial variation among local patches of the community over time (spatiotemporal dispersion). Dispersion may increase (local communities diverge in composition), stay the same, or decrease (communities converge) in response to disturbance. We compared patterns of spatiotemporal dispersion and temporal trajectories in community composition across three sites in a northern Chihuahuan Desert …

Diet Specialization Does Not Explain Occupancy Or Abundance In A Test Of The Resource Breadth Hypothesis In A Small Mammal Community, Deborah R. Boro Jul 2017

Diet Specialization Does Not Explain Occupancy Or Abundance In A Test Of The Resource Breadth Hypothesis In A Small Mammal Community, Deborah R. Boro

Biology ETDs

The abundance-occupancy relationship (AOR) is a recurrent pattern in ecology and biogeography, in which species with expansive distributions are locally common while those with restricted distributions are locally rare. Despite occurring across a wide variety of taxa and spatial scales, the mechanisms underlying AORs are not well understood. I tested two such mechanisms regarding dietary generalism in a guild of 8 small, herbivorous African mammals: (1) the degree to which diet was explained by food availability, and (2) population-level diet breadth. I expected that food availability would better predict diet for abundant, widespread species than rare, restricted species. Additionally, I …

Syk Inhibitors In Clinical Development For Hematological Malignancies, Delong Liu, Aleksandra Mamorska-Dyga Jul 2017

Syk Inhibitors In Clinical Development For Hematological Malignancies, Delong Liu, Aleksandra Mamorska-Dyga

NYMC Faculty Publications

Spleen tyrosine kinase (Syk) is a cytosolic non-receptor protein tyrosine kinase (PTK) and is mainly expressed in hematopoietic cells. Syk was recognized as a critical element in the B-cell receptor signaling pathway. Syk is also a key component in signal transduction from other immune receptors like Fc receptors and adhesion receptors. Several oral Syk inhibitors including fostamatinib (R788), entospletinib (GS-9973), cerdulatinib (PRT062070), and TAK-659 are being assessed in clinical trials. The second generation compound, entospletinib, showed promising results in clinical trials against B-cell malignancies, mainly chronic lymphoid leukemia. Syk inhibitors are being evaluated in combination regimens in multiple malignancies.

Multi-Character Field Recognition For Arabic And Chinese Handwriting, Daniel Lopresti, George Nagy, Sharad C. Seth, Xiaoli Zhang Jul 2017

Multi-Character Field Recognition For Arabic And Chinese Handwriting, Daniel Lopresti, George Nagy, Sharad C. Seth, Xiaoli Zhang

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

Two methods, Symbolic Indirect Correlation (SIC) and Style Constrained Classification (SCC), are proposed for recognizing handwritten Arabic and Chinese words and phrases. SIC reassembles variable-length segments of an unknown query that match similar segments of labeled reference words. Recognition is based on the correspondence between the order of the feature vectors and of the lexical transcript in both the query and the references. SIC implicitly incorporates language context in the form of letter n-grams. SCC is based on the notion that the style (distortion or noise) of a character is a good predictor of the distortions arising in other characters, …

The Trajectory Of Sedentary Behavior From Adolescence To Emerging Adulthood, Marissa D. Alert Jul 2017

The Trajectory Of Sedentary Behavior From Adolescence To Emerging Adulthood, Marissa D. Alert

Open Access Dissertations

US adolescents spend up to 8 hours daily in screen time. Efforts to reduce sedentary time have often focused on identifying its correlates. However, little is known about the trajectory of adolescents’ screen time or factors that predict it. This study examined change in screen time from age 13 to 23 and its predictors in a representative US sample. Adolescents (N = 3,705; 46.3% boys) from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health’s public-use data self-reported their screen time (hours/week watching TV and videos, and playing video/computer games) in 1994, 1996, 2001 and 2008. Piecewise latent growth models …

Reconciling The Challenge Of Aphanic Species Within Marine Conservation, Kerri L. Bolow Jul 2017

Reconciling The Challenge Of Aphanic Species Within Marine Conservation, Kerri L. Bolow

HCNSO Student Capstones

Aphanic species are those within a taxonomic complex that may not be readily distinguishable from other sympatric species. The existence of these species is becoming apparent at an increasing rate through the use of technological tools like molecular genetic analyses. A lack of clarity on the definitions of terms used to describe similar species, how these species are identified, and how prevalent they are can confound identification, description, and management of these organisms. This review collects and defines the terms used to describe these hidden species and suggests the use of the term aphanic for situations where additional information (and …

Public Artifacts, Empirical Vulnerability And Descriptive Metaphysics, Blake Davenport

Theses

Herein I argue that Amie Thomasson’s account of public artifacts is empirically vulnerable. I first identify the descriptive claims that feature in Thomasson’s argument and then outline an experimental framework in which the accuracy of those claims can be evaluated. I conclude with some brief remarks on the possible implications of my approach for Thomasson’s account, and some thoughts on whether an experimental approach to evaluating projects in descriptive metaphysics might be valuable more broadly.

Evolution And Adaptation Lesson Plan: A Comparison Of Lecture And Activity Based Learning, Allison Rees

Honors Projects

In today’s society when it is really hard to keep students’ attention, it is necessary to incorporate a variety of learning styles to inspire different kinds of learners. If students are failing classes because they were struggling to pay attention is it 100% their fault? Everyone is different and has different learning styles that need attention. It would be better for students to actively participate in lessons rather than just absorb information. This project was on designing an activity based lesson on evolution and adaptations. There was also an opportunity to see how effective it was with two BIOL 2050 …

Differential Use Of Two Warm-Water Effluents By The Florida Manatee (Trichechus Manatus Latirostris) And Temporal Distributions Throughout Broward County, Florida, Laura F. Eldredge Jul 2017

Differential Use Of Two Warm-Water Effluents By The Florida Manatee (Trichechus Manatus Latirostris) And Temporal Distributions Throughout Broward County, Florida, Laura F. Eldredge

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

The threatened Florida manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris) migrates seasonally to warm-water refugia throughout the state of Florida due to metabolic requirements from low thermal conductance. Broward County’s two power plant refugia, Port Everglades (PEP) and Lauderdale (LPP), are known heavily-utilized aggregation sites for the Atlantic sub-population. Broward County collected relative abundance counts via aerial surveys from 2004–2013 siting 31,418 manatees during 169 surveys within 18 defined waterway zones. Counts during manatee wintering seasons were significantly different from January 2005-March 2008 and November 2008-March 2013, likely related to flight path and frequency standardization. Mean percentage of adults (90.12%) to …

Shark Bycatch In Commercial Fisheries: A Global Perspective, Stephanie M. Bettis Jul 2017

Shark Bycatch In Commercial Fisheries: A Global Perspective, Stephanie M. Bettis

HCNSO Student Capstones

Many shark species have global distributions and are caught incidentally in different types of fisheries. Over the last two decades, shark populations have declined tremendously, with one of the leading causes of this decline bycatch in primarily teleost fisheries. Bycatch occurs throughout the world’s fisheries, but is not well documented in terms of species composition and numbers of each species captured. Information on shark bycatch is spread through the primary and grey literature, but has not been compiled in summary to date. The goal of my capstone is to present global shark bycatch data and provide a comparative review to …
