London Partsong Clubs And Masculinities, 1750-1830, Bethany Cencer
London Partsong Clubs And Masculinities, 1750-1830, Bethany Cencer
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
My dissertation, “London Partsong Clubs and Masculinities, 1750–1830,” examines how the musical activities of all-male singing clubs in London played a key role in the formation of English masculine identities during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. This particular time frame usefully demarcates a period of significant transformation from the fluid gender personae of early eighteenth-century society to the rigid gender binaries of the Victorian era. The partsongs sung during the private, weekly club meetings were harmonized settings of English texts (often 3–5 vocal parts) performed without accompaniment. As a genre written primarily by and for men within social settings, …
Understanding The Invasion Success And Spread Of The Globally Introduced Marine Invertebrate, Diadumene Lineata, Megan Marie Flenniken
Understanding The Invasion Success And Spread Of The Globally Introduced Marine Invertebrate, Diadumene Lineata, Megan Marie Flenniken
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Fundamental to understanding invasion ecology is the identification of the processes regulating how species persist and often thrive in regions and environments in which they did not evolve. A remarkable colonizing species serving as a model by which to address invasion hypotheses is Diadumene lineata, the world's most widely distributed yet understudied sea anemone. In only 15 years (1892-1906) D. lineata expanded from its native Asia (the only region where it undergoes sexual reproduction) to colonize all continental margins of the Northern Hemisphere, and in the 20th century colonized all but one continental shoreline of the Southern Hemisphere. I sought, …

Imagining The North: Nordic Art In Nineteenth-Century Visual Culture And Criticism, Nicholas Kenton Parkinson
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This dissertation studies the reception of Nordic painting in nineteenth-century France. I argue that the notion of so-called Scandinavian Art in nineteenth-century French literature, commonly referred to as l’art scandinave, l’école scandinave, or les écoles scandinaves , and encompassing artists coming from the countries that in the present day are known as Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and Finland, during across the second half of the nineteenth century, and solidified in usage and meaning at the end of the 1880s. The followering study presents a chronological account of how French writings on Nordic painting changed during this period, beginning with an introductory …

The Centriolar Distal Appendage Proteins Cep164 And Chibby1 Coordinate Multiple Steps In The Formation And Maintenance Of Airway Multicilia, Saul Sylvan Siller
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Multicilia are microtubule-based cellular projections that provide the motive force to propel mucus and debris out of our airways, cerebrospinal fluid in our nervous system, and the ovum in the female reproductive tract. Dysfunctional multicilia have been linked to genetic disorders, such as primary ciliary dyskinesia and cystic fibrosis, and been implicated in the pathologenesis of chronic respiratory diseases, including emphysema, chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder, and asthma. While multicilia play an absolutely essential role in human health, very little is known about how multicilia form and function. However, work from primary cilia, which are responsible for cellular signaling, as well …

Nonlinear Analyses Of Functional Mri Time-Series In Brain-Based Disorders, Sanja Nedic
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a non-invasive neuroimaging modality used to measure brain activity in vivo, capable of providing three-dimensional coverage of the brain at a high spatial resolution. While fMRI has advanced our understanding of the brain, it has had limited applications in medical practice due to 1) analytic approaches predominantly focused on either contrasting signal amplitudes from clearly defined conditions in simplistic task stimuli (to localize “activations”) or on computing time-course cross-correlations between pairs of brain regions to infer the strength of functional “connectivity” between them in resting-state fMRI studies, and 2) low signal-to-noise ratio/difficulty separating signal …

Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) are major constituents of the tumor microenvironment in solid tumors and have been implicated as mediators of tumor progression, invasion and metastasis. Correspondingly, accumulation of TAMs is associated with unfavorable clinical outcomes in numerous types of solid tumors. E-selectin is a hallmark of inflammation and a key adhesion molecule that accommodates the initial contact of circulating immune cells with the inflamed vessel surface. Currently, the association between E-selectin and TAMs is not fully elucidated; therefore, the present study investigated the association between vessel inflammation, TAM infiltration, and clinical outcome in breast cancer. A total of 53 procedure-naïve …
Can Alley Cropping Support Soil Health?
Can Alley Cropping Support Soil Health?
Working Trees (USDA-NAC)
Can alley cropping support soil health?
Alley cropping, the planting of rows of trees and/or shrubs to create alleys within which agricultural or horticultural crops are produced, can improve soil health and provide other benefits.
Alley cropping is one of several soil health management practices designed to increase organic matter, infiltration rates, water holding capacity, soil biological diversity and, with these changes, enhance crop yields.

Differentially Regulated Orthologs In Sorghum And The Subgenomes Of Maize, Yang Zhang, Daniel W. Ngu, Daniel Santana De Carvalho, Zhikai Liang, Yumou Qiu, Rebecca Roston, James C. Schnable
Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications
Identifying interspecies changes in gene regulation, one of the two primary sources of phenotypic variation, is challenging on a genome-wide scale. The use of paired time-course data on cold-responsive gene expression in maize (Zea mays) and sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) allowed us to identify differentially regulated orthologs. While the majority of cold-responsive transcriptional regulation of conserved gene pairs is species specific, the initial transcriptional responses to cold appear to be more conserved than later responses. In maize, the promoters of genes with conserved transcriptional responses to cold tend to contain more micrococcal nuclease hypersensitive sites in their …

Estimating Error Models For Whole Genome Sequencing Using Mixtures Of Dirichlet-Multinomial Distributions, Steven Wu, Rachel Schwartz, David Winter, Donald Conrad, Reed Cartwright
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Motivation: Accurate identification of genotypes is an essential part of the analysis of genomic data, including in identification of sequence polymorphisms, linking mutations with disease and determining mutation rates. Biological and technical processes that adversely affect genotyping include copy-number-variation, paralogous sequences, library preparation, sequencing error and reference-mapping biases, among others. Results: We modeled the read depth for all data as a mixture of Dirichlet-multinomial distributions, resulting in significant improvements over previously used models. In most cases the best model was comprised of two distributions. The major-component distribution is similar to a binomial distribution with low error and low reference bias. …

County-Level Cumulative Environmental Quality Associated With Cancer Incidence, Jyotsna S. Jagai, Lynne C. Messer, Kristen M. Rappazzo, Christine L. Gray, Shannon C. Grabich, Danelle T. Lobdell
Institute for Sustainable Solutions Publications and Presentations
BACKGROUND: Individual environmental exposures are associated with cancer development; however, environmental exposures occur simultaneously. The Environmental Quality Index (EQI) is a county-level measure of cumulative environmental exposures that occur in 5 domains.
METHODS: The EQI was linked to county-level annual age-adjusted cancer incidence rates from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program state cancer profiles. All-site cancer and the top 3 site-specific cancers for male and female subjects were considered. Incident rate differences (IRDs; annual rate difference per 100,000 persons) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated using fixed-slope, random intercept multilevel linear regression models. Associations were assessed with …
The Role Of Personality Using The Millon College Counseling Inventory In Explaining A Variety Of Career Decision-Making Variables, Carly Chadick
The Role Of Personality Using The Millon College Counseling Inventory In Explaining A Variety Of Career Decision-Making Variables, Carly Chadick
Dissertations
In vocational research, the Five Factor Model (FFM) is one of the most popular theories of personality used when evaluating the role of personality in career development. However, thus far, few other personality theories have been used in vocational research, such as Millon’s theory. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine how Millon’s theory, operationalized using the Millon College Counseling Inventory (MCCI), may explain career development constructs, above the FFM traits, in a college student sample. Results indicated that the MCCI explained additional variance beyond FFM traits in several different career variables (i.e., profile elevation, negative career thinking, …

Satellite derived vegetation indices (VIs) are broadly used in ecological research, ecosystem modeling, and land surface monitoring. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), perhaps the most utilized VI, has countless applications across ecology, forestry, agriculture, wildlife, biodiversity, and other disciplines. Calculating satellite derived NDVI is not always straight-forward, however, as satellite remote sensing datasets are inherently noisy due to cloud and atmospheric contamination, data processing failures, and instrument malfunction. Readily available NDVI products that account for these complexities are generally at coarse resolution; high resolution NDVI datasets are not conveniently accessible and developing them often presents numerous technical and methodological …

Tiger sharks were sampled off the western (Ningaloo Reef, Shark Bay) and eastern (the Great Barrier Reef; GBR, Queensland and New South Wales; NSW) coastlines of Australia. Multiple tissues were collected from each shark to investigate the effects of location, size and sex of sharks on δ13C and δ15N stable isotopes among these locations. Isotopic composition of sharks sampled in reef and seagrass habitats (Shark Bay, GBR) reflected seagrass-based food-webs, whereas at Ningaloo Reef analysis revealed a dietary transition between pelagic and seagrass food-webs. In temperate habitats off southern Queensland and NSW coasts, shark diets relied on pelagic food-webs. Tiger …

The Impacts Of Sexual Minority Stress On Degree Of Perceived Burdensomeness, Thwarted Belongingness, And Suicidal Ideation, Caroline J. Hicks
Dissertations
As rates of suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, and completed suicides within the sexual minority population have surpassed those of heterosexuals, it has become crucial for researchers and counseling psychologists to better understand the unique stress that sexual minority individuals experience. The present study examined the impact that sexual minority stress had on two constructs of the interpersonal theory of suicide, thwarted belongingness and perceived burdensomeness, as well as on suicidal ideation among a sample of sexual minority adults (n = 197). Three multiple linear regressions were conducted to assess if the sexual minority stress constructs of sexual orientation victimization, rejection …

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Existing fire policy encourages the maintenance of ecosystem integrity in fire management, yet this is difficult to implement on lands managed for competing economic, human safety, and air quality concerns. We discuss a fire management approach in the mid-elevations of the Sierra Nevada, California, USA, that may exemplify similar challenges in other fire-adapted regions of the western USA. We also discuss how managing for pyrodiversity through mixed-severity fires can promote ecosystem integrity in Sierran mixed conifer and ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa Laws) forests. To illustrate, we show how coarse-filter (landscape-level) and complementary fine-filter (species-level) approaches can enhance forest management …

Correlation Of Trichome Density And Length And Polyphenol Fluorescence With Susceptibility Of Five Cucurbits To Didymella Bryoniae, Gabriel Rennberger, A. P. Keinath, M. Hess
Publications
The fungal pathogen Didymella bryoniae causes gummy stem blight and black rot on a broad spectrum of cucurbits. However the substantial differences in susceptibility among Cucurbitaceae are not well studied. Susceptibility was characterized with muskmelon (Cucumis melo), watermelon (Citrullus lanatus), cucumber (Cucumis sativus), pumpkin (Cucurbita pepo), and zucchini (C. pepo). Lesion diameters on leaf disks inoculated with agar plugs were measured 7 days after inoculation, and the necrotized areas of leaf disks inoculated with conidial suspensions were measured 48 h after inoculation (hai). For each species, the number of trichomes …

Bariatric surgery (BAR) has become a popular treatment for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) which is among the most critical obesity-related comorbidities. Patients who have bariatric surgery, are exposed to complications after surgery. Furthermore, the mid- to long-term complications after bariatric surgery can be deadly and increase the complexity of managing safety of these operations and healthcare costs. Current studies on BAR complications have mainly used risk scoring for identifying patients who are more likely to have complications after surgery. Though, these studies do not take into considera-tion the imbalanced nature of the data where the size of the class …
A Short History Of Biological Warfare: From Pre-History To The 21st Century, W. Seth Carus
A Short History Of Biological Warfare: From Pre-History To The 21st Century, W. Seth Carus
WMD Occasional Papers
This short monograph reviews the history of biological warfare (BW) from prehistory to the present. It covers what we know about the practice of BW and briefly describes the programs that developed BW weapons based on the best available research. To the extent possible, it primarily draws on the work of historians who used primary sources, relying where possible on studies specifically focused on BW. By broadening our knowledge of BW, such studies have enabled us to write about the topic with more accuracy and detail than could have been done even a few years ago.

Stress physiology is thought to contribute to individual differences in behaviour. In part this reflects the fact that canonical personality measures consist of responses to challenges, including novel objects and environments. Exposure to novelty is typically assumed to induce a moderate increase in glucocorticoids (CORT), although this has rarely been tested. We tested this assumption using great tits, Parus major, selected for divergent personalities (bold-fast and shy-slow explorers), predicting that the shy birds would exhibit higher CORT following exposure to a novel object. We also scored behavioural responses to the novel object, predicting that bold birds would more frequently approach …
Kinematic Difference Between A Biological Cell And An Artificial Vesicle In A Strong Dc Electric Field – A “Shell” Membrane Model Study, Hui Ye
Biology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Background
Cellular biomechanics can be manipulated by strong electric fields, manifested by the field-induced membrane deformation and migration (galvanotaxis), which significantly impacts normal cellular physiology. Artificial giant vesicles that mimic the phospholipid bilayer of the cell membrane have been used to investigate the membrane biomechanics subjected to electric fields. Under a strong direct current (DC) electric field, the vesicle membrane demonstrates various patterns of deformation, which depends on the conductivity ratio between the medium and the cytoplasm. The vesicle exhibits prolate elongation along the direction of the electric field if the cytoplasm is more conductive than the medium. Conversely, the …

Episodic Memory Via Spans And Cospans: A Hierarchy Of Spatiotemporal Colimits, Michael John Healy Ms, Thomas Preston Caudell Phd
Electrical & Computer Engineering Technical Reports
We introduce a category-theoretic account of episodic memory as an outgrowth of an existing mathematical theory of the semantics of neural networks. We propose that neu- ral systems which can be said to have episodic memory represent sequences of events and their associated information within a hierarchy of concepts, represented in their neu- ral networks. In the categorical model presented here, the hierarchy is based upon col- imits. Colimits “put everything together” mathematically, and appear throughout many categories. The event-sequence colimits can be visualized as assemblies of categorical structures known as spans and cospans. A string of cospans formalizes a …
