Neurogenetics Of The Externalizing Spectrum, Caitlin E. Carey
Neurogenetics Of The Externalizing Spectrum, Caitlin E. Carey
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Externalizing spectrum disorders, which include attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, conduct disorder, alcohol and substance use disorders, and antisocial personality disorder, are characterized by behavioral disinhibition and are thought to be manifestations of a common heritable liability factor throughout the lifespan. However, relatively little is known about their underlying etiology. Here, I probe genetic and neural risk mechanisms for externalizing psychopathology in three complementary studies. First, I report an indirect association between genetic risk for childhood attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and problem drinking in young adulthood, mediated by heightened reward-related neural activity within the ventral striatum, among 404 college students. I …

ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATIONEvaluating a Targeted, Universal Middle School Program for Childhood Overweight and Obesity: StayingFitbyMyra AltmanDoctor of Philosophy in PsychologyWashington University in St. Louis, 2016Professor Denise E. Wilfley, ChairpersonChildhood obesity is a pressing public health concern associated with significant medical and psychosocial comorbidities. Intervention is crucial, and schools are often suggested as an important venue through which to intervene, although the results of such interventions are inconsistent and mixed. The present study sought to expand on the literature by evaluating the effect of a targeted and universal school-based obesity intervention, StayingFit, in three middle schools in a low-socioeconomic status, …
Type 1 And F17-Like Pili Promote The Establishment Of The Uropathogenic E. Coli Intestinal Reservoir, Caitlin Nicole Spaulding
Type 1 And F17-Like Pili Promote The Establishment Of The Uropathogenic E. Coli Intestinal Reservoir, Caitlin Nicole Spaulding
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Urinary tract infections (UTI) affect over 150 million individuals worldwide every year. These infections are associated with significant morbidity and have a sizeable economic impact, with $5 billion being spent on UTI treatment in the USA annually. Uropathogenic E. coli (UPEC) are responsible for 80% of community acquired UTIs and 65% of nosocomial UTI. The current standard of care for UTI is antibiotic therapy. However, 30-50% of women experience recurrent UTI (rUTI) despite receiving antibiotic therapy. The prevalence of single and multi-drug resistant UPEC strains has led to increased reliance on carbepenems, which are primarily reserved for multi-drug resistant infections, …
Understanding The Relationship Between Hosts And Their Microbiome, Boahemaa Adu-Oppong
Understanding The Relationship Between Hosts And Their Microbiome, Boahemaa Adu-Oppong
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Microbes are bountiful and associated with every animal and plant kingdom. Furthermore, microbes can alter host phenotype, development, health and functioning. However, this is not a one-way interaction, hosts can structure microbial communities by changing the environment to be suitable for certain microbial species. Several studies have characterized microbial communities associated with hosts to answer two2 main questions in ecology: who’s there, and what are they doing? However, two questions from the field of community ecology are often ignored (1) what forces are structuring the microbial communities (how was the community formed) and (2) how stable are these communities. Vellend …
Changes In Personality Traits And Personality Pathology In Older Adults: Self And Informant Perspectives, Hannah R. King
Changes In Personality Traits And Personality Pathology In Older Adults: Self And Informant Perspectives, Hannah R. King
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
A relatively small amount of research has examined personality and personality disorder change from more than one perspective, particularly in older adults. The main aim of this study is to examine personality and personality disorder change in older adults from multiple perspectives including an interview assessment, self-report, and informant-report. Data from the St. Louis Personality and Aging Network (SPAN), a representative sample of St. Louis residents with 1,630 participants and their informants, was used to study change. We use structural equation modeling to test mean-level changes and individual differences in change over the course of the study. For personality disorders, …

The Tension Between Technocratic And Social Values In Environmental Decision-Making: An'yang Stream Restoration In South Korea, Chang-Yu Hong
Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation examined the extent to which interests and values of diverse stakeholders were considered through participation-oriented decision-making. It covered the An' Yang Stream restoration case in South Korea, which has been judged a successful stream management endeavor led by public-private partnership governance.
This research utilized a mixed methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative methods. It addressed the extent to which the collaborative and participatory decision-making processes incorporated diverse stakeholder values and visions. The relevant data on stream restoration was collected through nominal group technique (NGT), analytic hierarchy process (AHP), semi-structured interviews, observations at collaborative stakeholder meetings and workshops, and …
Genetic And Biological Studies On Solanum Plants: Insights Into The Leaf Wax Alkane Paleoclimate Proxy, Amanda Lorraine Dorothy Bender
Genetic And Biological Studies On Solanum Plants: Insights Into The Leaf Wax Alkane Paleoclimate Proxy, Amanda Lorraine Dorothy Bender
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
The hydrogen isotopic composition (δ2H) of precipitation records fluxes of water in the hydrological cycle, and can reflect climatic variables such as temperature and humidity. Leaf wax n-alkanes can record δ2H of precipitation; consequently, n-alkanes extracted from sedimentary archives are commonly used as proxies for paleoenvironmental reconstruction. However, the utility of the leaf wax paleoclimate proxy is modulated by uncertainty about how physiological processes affect hydrogen isotopic compositions during alkane biosynthesis. This work aims to improve our understanding of the leaf wax paleoclimate proxy by examining biological and environmental sources of variability on cuticular leaf waxes. We used Solanum (tomato) …
Determining The Molecular Mechanisms Of Huntington’S Disease Through Multi-Scale Modeling, Kiersten Ruff
Determining The Molecular Mechanisms Of Huntington’S Disease Through Multi-Scale Modeling, Kiersten Ruff
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Huntington’s disease (HD) is associated with a mutational CAG repeat expansion within exon 1 of the huntingtin (Htt) gene. Post-transcriptional processing leads to the generation of N-terminal Htt protein fragments (Htt-NTFs), including those that encompass exon 1 (Httex1). Within Httex1, the CAG-repeat encoded polyglutamine (polyQ) tract is flanked N-terminally by a 17-residue amphipathic stretch (N17) and C-terminally by a 50-residue proline rich (PR) domain. Htt-NTFs, including Httex1, are among the smallest fragments that recapitulate HD pathology in mouse models. However, the direct link between Htt-NTFs with polyQ expansions and neurodegeneration that leads to HD remains unresolved. Despite being a monogenic …
Seasonal Ecology Of Mottled Sculpin And Brown Trout In A Coldwater Michigan Stream, Susanna K. Lagory
Seasonal Ecology Of Mottled Sculpin And Brown Trout In A Coldwater Michigan Stream, Susanna K. Lagory
Masters Theses
In temperate regions, environmental conditions vary distinctly between seasons. This variation can strongly impact in-stream environmental conditions. Winter is often thought to be harsher than other seasons for stream fishes, given the adverse environmental conditions that arise from low temperatures during winter in temperate regions. Low temperatures, episodic elevated discharge, and ice formation associated with winter are hypothesized to reduce movement, body condition, and survival of stream fishes. However, few studies test this hypothesis through formal comparisons, and most studies of seasonal stream fish ecology focus on salmonids. To address this knowledge gap, I estimated and compared body condition, net …
Polychlorinated Biphenyl Concentrations In Fish From Lake Michigan Tributaries And A Preliminary Risk Assessment Concerning Their Consumption By Sport And Tribal Fishermen, Amanda K. Potter
Masters Theses
Human and environmental health continues to be threatened by persistent organic pollutants in the Great Lakes ecosystem. Polycholorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are considered one of the most toxic contaminants in the Great Lakes due to their recalcitrance, bioaccumulation, lipid solubility, and adverse health effects.
The three main questions examined in this research were: 1) Do PCB concentrations vary between largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides), northern pike (Esox Lucius), smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu), and walleye (Sander vitreus) in west Michigan tributaries of Lake Michigan; 2) Do PCB concentrations vary on a watershed level among Manistee …

Yellow Perch Genetic Stock Structure In Eastern Lake Michigan: What Is The Importance Of Drowned River Mouth Lakes?, Gregory M. Chorak
Masters Theses
Habitat heterogeneity has the possibility of structuring populations. Even in connected landscapes, there can be cryptic structuring of populations that coincides with landscape features that limit gene flow or select for different phenotypes within a species. Yellow perch (Perca flavescens) is an economically and ecologically prominent fish in the Laurentian Great Lakes. In the Lake Michigan basin, yellow perch reside in nearshore Lake Michigan, including drowned river mouths (DRMs, lake-like habitats that link tributaries to Lake Michigan). The goal of this study was to understand whether yellow perch populations are structured in eastern Lake Michigan by the connected …

The Impact Of Extracurricular Activities In Egyptian Colleges On The Job Market, Niyra Tawfik Elklisy
The Undergraduate Research Journal
The research discussed the impact of extracurricular activities in Egyptian colleges on the job market. Two major questions in this research were: is there a difference between the extracurricular activities in the Egyptian private universities and public ones? Does it make a difference to be engaged in extracurricular activities in Egyptian public or private universities on employment? Forty-eight Egyptian graduates took part in an online survey for a quantitative research to examine their involvement in these activities and how these activities reflected on their employment. At the end of the data gathering process, interesting findings resulted from the online survey. …

Whether they are secret or whether they are household names, identities are paramount in superhero comics. Yet those that create these identities do so from a place of privilege in a hierarchy which results in inauthentic characters and repetitive plots. For the superhero genre, the misrepresentation of female characters (perhaps related to a severe underrepresentation of female creators) has resulted in highly patriarchal storylines that are reductive, stereotypical, and often violent toward women. To combat this trend, one must consider the ways in which a more complex female character violates the current framework and offer a solution. For superhero comics, …

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
Minke whales are difficult to study and little information exists regarding their responses to anthropogenic sound. This study pools data from behavioural response studies off California and Norway. Data are derived from four tagged animals, of which one from each location was exposed to naval sonar signals. Statistical analyses were conducted using Mahalanobis distance to compare overall changes in parameters summarising dive behaviour, avoidance behaviour, and potential energetic costs of disturbance. Our quantitative analysis showed that both animals initiated avoidance behaviour, but responses were not associated with unusual dive behaviour. In one exposed animal the avoidance of the sonar source …

BACKGROUND: A fundamental understanding of live-cell dynamics is necessary in order to advance scientific techniques and personalized medicine. For this understanding to be possible, image processing techniques, probes, tracking algorithms and many other methodologies must be improved. Currently there are no large open-source datasets containing live-cell imaging to act as a standard for the community. As a result, researchers cannot evaluate their methodologies on an independent benchmark or leverage such a dataset to formulate scientific questions.
FINDINGS: Here we present T-Time, the largest free and publicly available data set of T cell phase contrast imagery designed with the …
Biofuels From Crop Residue: Soil Organic Carbon And Climate Impacts In The Us And India, Adam Liska
Biofuels From Crop Residue: Soil Organic Carbon And Climate Impacts In The Us And India, Adam Liska
Adam Liska Papers
The transformation of crop residue to soil organic carbon and CO2 is a conserved process that occurs globally. Due to the mathematics of carbon intensity calculations found in government regulations, the amount of CO2 emitted from crop residue per unit of energy in biofuel is largely independent of the amount of residue removed and the location of its removal, as shown by results from the US and India.
Soil organic carbon (SOC) levels are at equilibria determined by carbon inputs from plant material (+Ic) and loss from oxidation to CO2
Are the US results relevant …

Intelligent Computation And Dsp-Based Landing Control, Jih-Gau Juang, Hou-Kai Chiou, Chia-Ling Lee
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This paper presents several digital signal processor (DSP) based intelligent controllers for aircraft automatic landing systems (ALSs). Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) control law is adopted in the intelligent controller design. A fuzzy cerebellar model articulation controller (CMAC) is utilized to compensate for the PID control signal. Control gains are selected by evolutionary computation. The controllers' tracking performance of preset landing paths and capability to adaptively respond to different disturbances are demonstrated through hardware simulations. Different evolution methods, namely Adewuya crossover, arithmetical crossover, average crossover, convex crossover and blend crossover are utilized to analyze the controllers’ performances in terms of optimal parameter search. …

Phylogenetically Clumped Species Composition Of Marine Green Algae (Chlorophyta) In The Temperate Zone, Hungyen Chen, Satoshi Nagai
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Global patterns of diversity in marine algae have been reported at the genus level but rarely at the species level. In this study, we investigate the global distribution of species diversity for marine green algae and evaluate the effect of water temperature upon the species composition. We calculated and mapped the species richness and phylogenetic diversity of green algae in 5° x 5° latitude-longitude cells. We then compared and grouped the different spatial patterns of phylogenetic species composition of green algae around the world. Finally, we fitted a locally weighted scatterplot smoothing (LOWESS) curve to the sea surface temperature (SST) …

Triangulating Public Meaning: Corpus Linguistics, Immersion, And The Constitutional Record, Lawrence B. Solum
BYU Law Review
This Article contributes to the development of an originalist methodology by making the case for an approach that employs three distinct methods, each of which serves as a basis for confirming or questioning the results reached by the other two. This approach will be called the Method of Triangulation. The three component techniques are as follows: 1. The Method of Corpus Linguistics: The method of corpus linguistics employs large-scale data sets (corpora) that provide evidence of linguistic practice. 2. The Originalist Method of Immersion: The method of immersion requires researchers to immerse themselves in the linguistic and conceptual world of …

The Power Of Words: A Comment On Hamann And Vogel’S Evidence-Based Jurisprudence Meets Legal Linguistics—Unlikely Blends Made In Germany, Mark C. Suchman
BYU Law Review
By offering an international and interdisciplinary point of comparison, Hamann and Vogel demonstrate that current American forays into corpus-based legal scholarship reflect only a small sliver of the full range of possibilities for such research. This Comment considers several key branching points that may lie ahead, as the nascent literature begins to mature. In particular, the Comment examines two vexing ambiguities in the corpus-linguistic agenda: the first centers on the ambiguous meaning of legal “empiricism”; the second, on the ambiguous relationship between words and actions. To achieve its full potential, legal corpus linguistics will need to move beyond mere description, …

Department of Medical Oncology Faculty Papers
The prognostic value of routine laboratory variables in breast cancer has been largely overlooked. Based on laboratory tests commonly performed in clinical practice, we aimed to develop a new model to predict disease free survival (DFS) after surgical removal of primary breast cancer. In a cohort of 1,596 breast cancer patients, we analyzed the associations of 33 laboratory variables with patient DFS. Based on 3 significant laboratory variables (hemoglobin, alkaline phosphatase, and international normalized ratio), together with important demographic and clinical variables, we developed a prognostic model, achieving the area under the curve of 0.79. We categorized patients into 3 …

Is There A Higher-Order Mechanism That Explains Performance Across Prediction Tasks?, Michelle Lisa Eisenberg
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
People constantly make predictions about what will happen in the near future. People anticipate how other people around them will act, what other people will say, and what actions will help them achieve the greatest rewards. Because all of these behaviors are typically called prediction, it is easy to make the assumption that performance across all of these types of tasks is driven by the same underlying mechanism. However, there has been little investigation into whether the mechanisms underlying prediction are the same across multiple task modalities. Therefore, in the current study, 226 participants completed four types of tasks that …
Sequence Determinants Of The Individual And Collective Behaviour Of Intrinsically Disordered Proteins, Alexander S. Holehouse
Sequence Determinants Of The Individual And Collective Behaviour Of Intrinsically Disordered Proteins, Alexander S. Holehouse
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Intrinsically disordered proteins and protein regions (IDPs) represent around thirty percent of the eukaryotic proteome. IDPs do not fold into a set three dimensional structure, but instead exist in an ensemble of inter-converting states. Despite being disordered, IDPs are decidedly not random; well-defined - albeit transient - local and long-range interactions give rise to an ensemble with distinct statistical biases over many length-scales. Among a variety of cellular roles, IDPs drive and modulate the formation of phase separated intracellular condensates, non-stoichiometric assemblies of protein and nucleic acid that serve many functions. In this work, we have explored how the amino …
