Soil Feedback Of Garlic Mustard (Alliaria Petiolata) On Oat (Avena Sativa) Plants, Brook Morris, Johanna A. Dille
Soil Feedback Of Garlic Mustard (Alliaria Petiolata) On Oat (Avena Sativa) Plants, Brook Morris, Johanna A. Dille
RURALS: Review of Undergraduate Research in Agricultural and Life Sciences
Garlic mustard (Alliaria petiolata) occurrence is known to occur in Kansas but is not widespread. Populations were found near creeks below forested canopies in southern portions of Riley and Pottawatomie Counties, Kansas during April and May of 2013 and 2014. Soil was taken from areas of two garlic mustard populations as well as nearby areas where there was no garlic mustard. One location identified as Mt. Zion was a silty clay loam soil with greater organic matter content and nutrient status while the St. George site was a sandy soil with lower organic matter and available nutrients. Greenhouse pot …

© 2017 Currie, Tait, Parry, de Francisco-Mora, Hicks, Osborn, Widdicombe and Stahl. Marine ecosystems are exposed to a range of human-induced climate stressors, in particular changing carbonate chemistry and elevated sea surface temperatures as a consequence of climate change. More research effort is needed to reduce uncertainties about the effects of global-scale warming and acidification for benthic microbial communities, which drive sedimentary biogeochemical cycles. In this research, mesocosm experiments were set up using muddy and sandy coastal sediments to investigate the independent and interactive effects of elevated carbon dioxide concentrations (750 ppm CO2 ) and elevated temperature (ambient +4◦ C) …

Spread Of Dermacentor Reticulatus Is Associated With The Loss Of Forest Area, Ewa J. Mierzejewska, Agustín Estrada-Peña, Anna Bajer
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials
Changes in tick distribution and abundance are among the main drivers of the (re)emergence of transmitted pathogens. We aimed to uncover the reasons of the reported spread of Dermacentor reticulatus in Poland using a variety of proxies of environmental features, ground-measured temperature and remotely-sensed data of temperature and vegetation. Ground-measured temperature was recorded in 2013–2014, in sites where D. reticulatus presence (n = 16) or absence (n = 16) was confirmed. We specifically aimed to test whether changes in phenology of vegetation and the length of the growing season were correlated with field-derived data regarding the presence/absence of D. reticulatus …
Riparian Impacts To Stream Water Quality Across Spatial Scales, David J. Rosa
Riparian Impacts To Stream Water Quality Across Spatial Scales, David J. Rosa
Doctoral Dissertations
This research contributes new knowledge to two major challenges: 1) up-scaling water quality results from riparian treatment plots to larger watersheds and 2) determining if a short-rotation woody crop (SRWC) can be an effective riparian buffer for treating agricultural nonpoint source pollution. An exhaustive literature review was conducted to provide detailed insight into the methods of scaling, the associated mathematical equations, and their application to the problem of predicting water quality. Dimensional analysis was identified as an underutilized but promising technique for water quality scaling. Dimensional analysis was used to predict total phosphorus (TP) concentrations across heterogenous watersheds ranging from …

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research
Introduction
Favorable cardiovascular health (FCH) is associated with healthy longevity and reduced cardiovascular mortality risk. However, limited work has investigated the distribution of FCH in older age or considered the antecedents of FCH. Based on prior work linking psychological well-being with cardiovascular endpoints, higher psychological well-being was hypothesized to be associated with increased likelihood of maintaining FCH over time.
Methods
Data were from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing. The first study wave (2002–2003) included men and women aged ≥50 years. The analytic sample (N=4,925) was restricted to individuals without baseline cardiovascular disease and with clinical data from three follow-ups …

The Construction Of “Discomfort Psychological”: An Exploration Of Italians Teachers' Reports, Antonio Iudici, Matteo Fabbri
The Qualitative Report
Although there are several studies on youth problems in school, there are few studies on how teachers report psychological discomfort of the students and on what criteria does their procedure. Considering that schools increasingly make such reports to social or neuropsychiatry services, we wanted to find out whether it is flawless (bias, etc.) and how it can affect a student's career. This research presents an investigation on how the practice of signaling "psychological discomfort" at school is set up. Objects of the survey are the procedures used by the teachers to submit the psychological problems. The research subjects were Secondary …

It's All Downhill From Here: How The Nation's Dispute With Clean Water Act Jurisdiction Is Solved, Spencer H. Newman
Environmental and Earth Law Journal (EELJ)
What makes the United States one of the most prosperous and safest nations in the modern world? Perhaps it is the durable economy, the strong military force, or the Constitutional protections. What most Americans take for granted, however, is something people in many nations base their entire lives around: safe, clean water. Promulgated in 1972, the original Clean Water Act has been opposed and amended over the course of forty years. No provision, however, has been as hotly contested as the § 404 program for “dredge and fill” permits. Specifically, this section led to divisions on what constitutes “water” that …

Examining The Impact Of A University-Driven Exercise Programming Event On End-Of-Semester Stress In Students, Tessa L. Koschel, John C. Young, James W. Navalta
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 10(5): 754-763, 2017. Stress levels in university students peak during the final exam period. An inverse association exists between Physical Activity (PA) and poor mental health. UNLV has created Fitness4Finals (F4F), an event novel in its approach to academic stress reduction by incorporating both physical activity and mental relaxation. To our knowledge, a university-driven programming event aimed at reducing physiological and psychological stress among students approaching final exams had never been studied. Therefore, the aims of this research were to 1) examine the influence of F4F on physiological stress and perceived psychological stress (PPS) and …

Evaluating Mental Health In Cuban Refugees: The Role Of The Refugee Health Screener-15, Rahel Bosson, Victoria A. Schlaudt, Monnica T. Williams, Ruth M. Carrico, Adriana Peña, Julio A. Ramirez, Jonathan Kanter
Journal of Refugee & Global Health
The Refugee Health Screener-15 (RHS-15) is widely used in refugee populations, but the psychometric properties and clinical utility have not been evaluated in Cuban refugees and entrants. The current study explored results from the Spanish version of the RHS-15 in a sample of 53 Cuban entrants and refugees, and of these, 17.6% screened positive for a mental health concern. Analyses suggested that a positive screening was significantly related to symptoms of anxiety, depression, and posttraumatic stress disorder; however, it was not associated with demographic variables such as gender, mode of transport, or the number of countries through which a refugee …

Quantitative proteomics employing mass spectrometry is an indispensable tool in life science research. Targeted proteomics has emerged as a powerful approach for reproducible quantification but is limited in the number of proteins quantified. SWATH-mass spectrometry consists of data-independent acquisition and a targeted data analysis strategy that aims to maintain the favorable quantitative characteristics (accuracy, sensitivity, and selectivity) of targeted proteomics at large scale. While previous SWATH-mass spectrometry studies have shown high intra-lab reproducibility, this has not been evaluated between labs. In this multi-laboratory evaluation study including 11 sites worldwide, we demonstrate that using SWATH-mass spectrometry data acquisition we can consistently …

The Past In The Present: Federal Implementation Of The Native American Graves Protection And Repatriation Act, Erin J. Hudson
Anthropology ETDs
This dissertation examines the implementation of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act by federal agencies. Specifically, it examines the processes that archaeologists, working in different geographic regions and for different federal agencies, use to complete NAGPRA actions and determine cultural affiliation. A total of nine case studies from two regions (US Southwest and Pacific Northwest) and three federal agencies (USDA Forest Service, National Park Service, and US Army Corps of Engineer) were used to document the complete NAGPRA process as it occurs in real situations, to identify the processes and lines of evidence used to complete those actions, …

© 2017 American Chemical Society. Our goal is to develop convenient methods for obtaining trans-[PtII(4-Xpy)2Cl2] complexes applicable to 4-substituted pyridines (4-Xpy) with limited volatility and water solubility, properties typical of 4-Xpy, with X being a moiety targeting drug delivery. Treatment of cis-[PtII(DMSO)2Cl2] (DMSO = dimethyl sulfoxide) with 4-Xpy in acetonitrile allowed isolation of a new series of simple trans-[PtII(4-Xpy)2Cl2] complexes. A side product with very downfield H2/6 signals led to our synthesis of a series of new [PtII(4-Xpy)4]Cl2 salts. For both series in CDCl3, the size of the H2/6 δ[coordinated minus "free" 4-Xpy H2/6 shift] decreased as 4-Xpy donor ability …

Identification Of Deletions In The Hdc Gene Of Drosophila Melanogaster Generated Through Transposon-Excision Mutagenesis, Gregory A. Wesseling
Masters Theses
Histamine is a biogenic amine that functions as a neurotransmitter in a number of vertebrate and invertebrate systems and is synthesized from its precursor histidine by the enzyme histidine decarboxylase (HDC). In Drosophila, histamine has been shown to have function in photoreceptors, mechanoreceptor cells, as well as centrally located neurons. Mutations of the Hdc gene, such as HdcJK910, exhibit defects in histamine synthesis and display altered behaviors such as blindness, inability to groom, impaired thermal tolerance, and altered sleep rhythms. However, all Hdc mutants obtained thus far demonstrate some transcriptional activity.
In order to remove Hdc expression …

Entap: Software To Improve The Quality And Functional Annotation Of De Novo Assembled Non Model Eukaryotic Transcriptomes, Alexander Hart
Master's Theses
EnTAP (Eukaryotic Non-Model Transcriptome Annotation Pipeline) was designed to improve the accuracy, speed, and flexibility of functional gene annotation for de novo assembled transcriptomes in non-model Eukaryotes. This software package addresses the fragmentation and related assembly issues that result in inflated transcript estimates and poor annotation rates. Following filters applied through assessment of true expression and frame selection, open-source tools are leveraged to functionally annotate the translated proteins. Downstream features include fast similarity search across three repositories, protein domain assignment, orthologous gene family assessment, and Gene Ontology term assignment. The final annotation integrates across multiple databases and selects an optimal …
Kinetics Of Copper Uptake In Periphyton Under Natural Stream And Wastewater Effluent Exposures, Katelyn Turpin-Nagel
Kinetics Of Copper Uptake In Periphyton Under Natural Stream And Wastewater Effluent Exposures, Katelyn Turpin-Nagel
Master's Theses
The aim of the present study was to examine the uptake kinetics of copper to periphyton, a biofilm community of heterotrophic and autotrophic species, under freshwater and wastewater effluent exposure conditions. Copper uptake kinetic experiments were run using a constructed trickle apparatus, where short-term exposures were completed using environmentally relevant total copper concentrations. The differences in periphyton surface bound copper and intracellular uptake kinetics were observed and modeled by examining periphyton copper content, periphyton cellular binding parameters, and metal speciation based on dissolved organic matter (DOM) characteristics. First-order rate kinetics were used to analyze the differences in initial uptake rates …
The Role Of Bmp Signaling In Mediating Stimulatory Effects Of Fgf-Fgfr Signaling On Odontoblast Differentiation In Dental Pulp, Karen Sagomonyants
The Role Of Bmp Signaling In Mediating Stimulatory Effects Of Fgf-Fgfr Signaling On Odontoblast Differentiation In Dental Pulp, Karen Sagomonyants
Master's Theses
Odontoblast differentiation is dependent on multiple signaling molecules, including growth factors stored in the extracellular dentin matrix. Our previous studies have demonstrated that Fibroblast Growth Factor 2 (FGF2) exerted stage-specific effects on odontoblast differentiation in primary dental pulp cultures. FGF2 stimulated differentiation of functional odontoblasts expressing high levels of Dmp1 from early progenitors but inhibited the terminal differentiation of functional odontoblasts to fully differentiated odontoblasts expressing high levels of Dspp. These stimulatory effects involved activation of FGFR and ERK1/2, and increased levels of expression of Bmp2, Runx2, and Osx (components of BMP signaling) suggesting the involvement of …
Built To Last: Exploring Family Strategy In Dynastic Business Families, Mark William Auger
Built To Last: Exploring Family Strategy In Dynastic Business Families, Mark William Auger
Doctor of Business Administration Dissertations
Dynasties entwine family and fortune. They are organizational longevity outliers. Society offers a conflicting view of dynasties. On one hand, dynasties are associated with conflict, divisiveness, conspicuous consumption, and entitlement. On the other hand, dynastic business families employ people, produce and innovate products and processes, and give to community. Linked to values and enacted by strategic leaders, strategy organizes and mobilizes capital toward goals attainment. The firm-centric perspectives of the strategic management and family business strategy literatures overlook the systematic investigation of family strategy as a means of perpetuation. This grounded theory influenced study explores the components of a family …

Stability, Development, And Function Of A Symbiotic Bacterial Community Associated With The Reproductive System Of The Hawaiian Bobtail Squid, Euprymna Scolopes, Allison H. Kerwin
Doctoral Dissertations
Many aquatic organisms deposit their eggs into an environment where successful embryogenesis depends on minimizing biofouling. The female Hawaiian bobtail squid, Euprymna scolopes, harbors a diverse bacterial community within the accessory nidamental gland (ANG), a symbiotic reproductive organ. This community is hypothesized to be environmentally transmitted, and to be deposited from the ANG into the egg jelly coat (JC). Illumina sequencing of the 16S rRNA V4 gene region demonstrated that the ANG bacterial community (n=29) and that of the JC (n=35) were composed primarily of members of the Rhodobacteraceae and Verrucomicrobia, which together comprised on average 86% of …

The Shifting Ecumenical Landscape At The 2017 Reformation Centenary, Susan K. Wood
Theology Faculty Research and Publications
The 2017 Reformation Centenary is the first commemoration to take place during the ecumenical age and marks fifty years of Lutheran–Roman Catholic dialogue. The current ecumenical landscape is a tale of two cities, one of ecclesial fragmentation that exists simultaneously with new relationships of communion and ecumenical progress. The way forward requires the discernment of deeper commonalities among ecclesial tradition, a correlation of doctrines, a “pastoral ecumenism,” and a hierarchy of virtues in addition to a hierarchy of truths.

Groundwater Discharge In The Arctic: A Review Of Studies And Implications For Biogeochemistry, Alanna L. Lecher
Groundwater Discharge In The Arctic: A Review Of Studies And Implications For Biogeochemistry, Alanna L. Lecher
Faculty and Staff Publications & Presentations
Groundwater discharge, including submarine groundwater discharge, discharge to lakes and rivers, and subglacial discharge, affects freshwater and marine ecosystems across the globe. The implications for biogeochemistry include the transport of nutrients, metals, and gases to these systems. The Arctic is one region of the globe that has been understudied with respect to groundwater discharge until recently, when a handful of studies sought to understand the nature of groundwater discharge and its impacts on aquatic ecosystems. Those studies are summarized here, and the implications for biogeochemistry are synthesized. Carbon and nitrogen are the most frequently studied solutes with respect to groundwater …
