Understanding And Optimizing Growth And Development Of California Yellowtail (Seriola Dorsalis) In Aquaculture Using Physiological Tools, Laura Schwebel Aug 2017

Understanding And Optimizing Growth And Development Of California Yellowtail (Seriola Dorsalis) In Aquaculture Using Physiological Tools, Laura Schwebel

Theses

Physical fitness metrics were used to assess the health and development of California Yellowtail, Seriola dorsalis, in an aquaculture environment during two grow-out experiments. The first experiment sought to evaluate the effects of a common aquaculture deformity (an improperly inflated swim bladder) that has been hypothesized to impact energy allocation, growth, and development. Metrics including metabolic rate, critical swimming speed, feed conversion ratio, and growth rate, were monitored over a 32-week period in three groups of California Yellowtail: wild-caught (“wild”), healthy hatchery-reared (“inflated”), and hatchery-reared with uninflated swim bladders (“uninflated”). At the start of the grow-out period, wild fish …

Vertical And Cross-Shore Distributions Of Barnacle Larvae In La Jolla, Ca Nearshore Waters: Implications For Larval Transport Processes, Malloree Lynn Hagerty Aug 2017

Vertical And Cross-Shore Distributions Of Barnacle Larvae In La Jolla, Ca Nearshore Waters: Implications For Larval Transport Processes, Malloree Lynn Hagerty

Theses

Many marine organisms begin their lives as tiny larvae that are at the mercy of ocean currents. Understanding the transport and subsequent dispersal of larvae is crucial, as it drives population connectivity in the ocean. Larval transport is a complex process involving both physical motions of the water and larval behavior. Vertical positioning is especially important because currents vary throughout the water column, and larvae at different depths will be advected differently. With swimming speeds insufficient to swim against currents, marine larvae can mediate cross-shore transport by controlling their depth distributions. Thus, the overall objective of this study was to …

Increased Hippocampal Probdnf Contributes To Memory Impairments In Aged Mice, Mona Buhusi, Chris Etheredge, Ann-Charlotte Granholm, Catalin V. Buhusi Aug 2017

Increased Hippocampal Probdnf Contributes To Memory Impairments In Aged Mice, Mona Buhusi, Chris Etheredge, Ann-Charlotte Granholm, Catalin V. Buhusi

Psychology Faculty Publications

Memory decline during aging or accompanying neurodegenerative diseases, represents a major health problem. Neurotrophins have long been considered relevant to the mechanisms of aging-associated cognitive decline and neurodegeneration. Mature Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) and its precursor (proBDNF) can both be secreted in response to neuronal activity and exert opposing effects on neuronal physiology and plasticity. In this study, biochemical analyses revealed that increased levels of proBDNF are present in the aged mouse hippocampus relative to young and that the level of hippocampal proBDNF inversely correlates with the ability to perform in a spatial memory task, the water radial arm maze …

Adiponectin Improves Coronary No-Reflow Injury By Protecting The Endothelium In Rats With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus., Xue Han, Ye Wu, Xin Liu, Lu Ma, Tingting Lv, Qi Sun, Wenli Xu, Suli Zhang, Ke Wang, Wen Wang, Xin-Liang Ma, Huirong Liu

Department of Emergency Medicine Faculty Papers

To determine the effect of adiponectin (APN) on the coronary no-reflow (NR) injury in rats with Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), 80 male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed with a high-sugar-high-fat diet to build a T2DM model. Rats received vehicle or APN in the last week and then were subjected to myocardial ischemia reperfusion (MI/R) injury. Endothelium-dependent vasorelaxation of the thoracic aorta was significantly decreased and serum levels of endothelin-1 (ET-1), intercellular cell adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) were noticably increased in T2DM rats compared with rats without T2DM. Serum APN was positively correlated with the endothelium-dependent …

Similarities In Evasive Behavior Of Wolf Spiders (Araneae: Lycosidae), American Toads (Anura: Bufonidae) And Ground Beetles (Coleopterea: Carabidae), Lauren E. Brown, James H. Thrall

The Great Lakes Entomologist

(excerpt) While collecting newly metalnorphosed American toads, Bufo anlericanus Holbrook, we have observed that they exhibited evasive behavior similar to that of adults of the wolf spiders, Pardosa saxatilis (Hentz), Pirata insularis Emerton, Pirata arerzicola Emerton, Pirata piratica (Oliver), and adults of the ground beetle, Elaplrrus ruscarius Say. When pursued or disturbed, the spiders, beetles and toads ran across the pound rapidly for short distances (ca. 1-50 cm). They then stopped abruptly and remained motionless. If they were further pursued, this escape sequence was repeated in the same or another direction. Toads and spiders occasionally moved to shallow water to …

Biosensors For Cancer Detection Applications, Shannon Griffin Aug 2017

Biosensors For Cancer Detection Applications, Shannon Griffin

Missouri S&T’s Peer to Peer

Cancer is one of the most deadly diseases, and current detection options are ineffective. Recently, a large amount of research has been conducted for the development of biosensors able to detect cancer biomarkers. Many biosensors have been created for cancer detecting purposes. I examined literature reviews outlining current biosensing methods. These reviews provided an overview of the sensing techniques that are currently in existence as well as evaluations of their effectiveness. I also read experimental reports that outline the construction of biosensors fabricated in laboratories and the results of their testings. These papers help to showcase the feasibility and effectiveness …

Clinical Uses For Psychedelic Drugs, Matthew Clarkson Aug 2017

Clinical Uses For Psychedelic Drugs, Matthew Clarkson

Missouri S&T’s Peer to Peer

Throughout the last forty years, psychedelic drugs have been illegal in the United States. Stigmatized due to the potential for abuse, the use of these drugs has been relegated to simple criminal activity and research stagnated for those 40 years. Slowly, research has begun to pick up as the restrictions begin to lift incrementally. However, the current restrictions are intense, further limiting the amount of research conducted that can reveal the medical benefits of these drugs. Through multiple studies, both open-label and double-blinded to show both feasibility and efficacy, as well as the biological impact of the drugs, significant anxiolytic, …

Cancer-Related Risk Factors And Incidence Of Major Cancers By Race, Gender And Region; Analysis Of The Nih-Aarp Diet And Health Study, Tomi Akinyemiju, Howard Wiener, Maria Pisu

Epidemiology and Environmental Health Faculty Publications

Background: Racial disparities in the incidence of major cancers may be attributed to differences in the prevalence of established, modifiable risk factors such as obesity, smoking, physical activity and diet.

Methods: Data from a prospective cohort of 566,398 adults aged 50–71 years, 19,677 African-American and 450,623 Whites, was analyzed. Baseline data on cancer-related risk factors such as smoking, alcohol, physical activity and dietary patterns were used to create an individual adherence score. Differences in adherence by race, gender and geographic region were assessed using descriptive statistics, and Cox proportional hazards models were used to determine the association between adherence and …

Nonparametric Variable Importance Assessment Using Machine Learning Techniques, Brian D. Williamson, Peter B. Gilbert, Noah Simon, Marco Carone Aug 2017

Nonparametric Variable Importance Assessment Using Machine Learning Techniques, Brian D. Williamson, Peter B. Gilbert, Noah Simon, Marco Carone

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

In a regression setting, it is often of interest to quantify the importance of various features in predicting the response. Commonly, the variable importance measure used is determined by the regression technique employed. For this reason, practitioners often only resort to one of a few regression techniques for which a variable importance measure is naturally defined. Unfortunately, these regression techniques are often sub-optimal for predicting response. Additionally, because the variable importance measures native to different regression techniques generally have a different interpretation, comparisons across techniques can be difficult. In this work, we study a novel variable importance measure that can …

Advancement Of Oxygen Biosensor In Escherichia Coli, Caitlyn Meiser Aug 2017

Advancement Of Oxygen Biosensor In Escherichia Coli, Caitlyn Meiser

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Research Publications

Microbial biosensors can be used to provide information about the cells’ environment in large-scale fermentations. In this project an oxygen sensitive biosensor is being developed in Escherichia coli to determine what kind of conditions cells are growing in: aerobic or anaerobic. This project specifically studies expression from the fumarate and nitrate reductase (FNR) promoter (PFNR) under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. In fluorescence experiments, the expression levels of green fluorescent protein (GFP) were used to quantify the effectiveness of the PFNR in the DH5α, MG1655 and BL21 strains of E. coli. The negative control of the experiments, …

Anatomy and Cell Biology Publications

Background: Epithelial ovarian cancer exhibits extensive interpatient and intratumoral heterogeneity, which can hinder successful treatment strategies. Herein, we investigated the efficacy of an emerging oncolytic, Maraba virus (MRBV), in an in vitro model of ovarian tumour heterogeneity. Methods: Four ovarian high-grade serous cancer (HGSC) cell lines were isolated and established from a single patient at four points during disease progression. Limiting-dilution subcloning generated seven additional subclone lines to assess intratumoral heterogeneity. MRBV entry and oncolytic efficacy were assessed among all 11 cell lines. Low-density receptor (LDLR) expression, conditioned media treatments and co-cultures were performed to determine factors impacting MRBV oncolysis. …

Impacts Of A Community Supported Agriculture (Csa) Voucher Program On Food Lifestyle Behaviors: Evidence From An Employer-Sponsored Pilot Program, Jairus J. Rossi, Timothy A. Woods, James E. Allen Iv

Agricultural Economics Faculty Publications

Community supported agriculture (CSA) programs have recently received attention for their potential to influence food lifestyle behaviors and health outcomes. We build on and expand inquiries into the relationship between CSA participation and behavior change by presenting the results from a controlled pilot study of first-time CSA shareholders. We offered 95 first-time shareholders a $200 voucher to participate in a CSA. Prior to and immediately following CSA participation, these shareholders completed a survey on food lifestyle behaviors. Using econometric analyses, we measured shareholder behavior changes against an 82 person control group. All participants were drawn from a pool of individuals …
