Spatial Soundscape Ecology: Application In A Paleotropical Rainforest, Jack Vanschaik Aug 2017

Spatial Soundscape Ecology: Application In A Paleotropical Rainforest, Jack Vanschaik

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

The world’s biodiversity is declining with much of the decrease attributed to human activity. The paleotropical rainforests of Borneo contribute 10% of the world biodiversity but are at risk of destruction due to logging and other human interests. Soundscape ecology, defi ned as the study of the composition of sounds in an environment, is a new fi eld that offers solutions for assessing biodiversity and disturbance. Spatial dynamics are an important component of an ecosystem, yet the link between spatial dynamics and soundscapes has not yet been studied. It should be possible to assess disturbance of an ecosystem by analyzing …

Water Contaminated With The Herbicide Atrazine: Alteration Of Cancer Associated Tumor Protein D52-Like 1 (Tpd52l1) Gene Using The Zebrafish Model, Devang Thanki Aug 2017

Water Contaminated With The Herbicide Atrazine: Alteration Of Cancer Associated Tumor Protein D52-Like 1 (Tpd52l1) Gene Using The Zebrafish Model, Devang Thanki

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

Atrazine is a commonly used herbicide in the Midwestern United States. Currently, Indiana uses about 26% of its land to grow corn, and atrazine is used in ample amounts, resulting in contamination of drinking water supplies. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has set the Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) at 3 parts per billion (ppb) in drinking water, but the herbicide is often found at higher concentrations. However, data suggests that atrazine can cause adverse health impacts even at 3 ppb. Previous studies from our laboratory in the zebrafish model system have shown atrazine alters gene expression associated with neuroendocrine …

Strain Measurement In A Specimen Subjected To Out-Of-Plane Movement: Using An Open-Source Digital Image Correlation-Based Tool, Thomas Pfauth, Joel Poling

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

Structural health monitoring (SHM) helps engineers maintain structures, enhance their safety, and operate them cost-effectively. Digital image correlation (DIC) techniques applied to SHM are noncontact techniques; they are also fast, accurate, and simple to implement. The goal of this investigation was to determine the smallest strain accurately measurable by a standard opensource DIC-based tool, in a specimen subjected to out-of-plane movement (toward or away from sensor). The investigation builds upon an initial study which determined the smallest accurately measurable strains using the same DIC-based tool in a specimen that was not subjected to controlled out-of-plane specimen movement. This initial study …

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

Substandard, spurious, falsely labeled, falsifi ed, and counterfeit (SSFFC) medications are a major concern in countries around the world, especially in the developing world. Forged and substandard medications pose major threats to the well-being and economic status of citizens in developing countries. This research focuses on designing an educational module and laboratory exercise that will teach students how to detect SSFFC medications with a universal method using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). This research is also focused on the implementation of the module at the Kilimanjaro School of Pharmacy (KSP) located in Tanzania. Acetaminophen tablets from four countries were purchased in …

The Role Of Vitamin D In Breast Cancer: Investigating Potential Inhibition Through Matrix Metalloproteinase 2, Hyesoo Chae Aug 2017

The Role Of Vitamin D In Breast Cancer: Investigating Potential Inhibition Through Matrix Metalloproteinase 2, Hyesoo Chae

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

Breast cancer remains the second leading cause of cancer death among women in the United States, with 99% of breast cancer patients surviving fi ve years after diagnosis if the tumor is localized. However, if the tumor has metastasized, the survival rate decreases to 22%. Epidemiological and animal studies, as well as previous studies from our laboratory in in vitro 3D cell culture models, support the hypothesis that vitamin D may inhibit breast cancer metastasis in humans, but the mechanisms remain unknown. The purpose of the present studies was to investigate the effect of the bioactive vitamin D metabolite, 1α,25-dihydroxyvitamin …

Assessing The Vegetative Diversity Of An East Texas Golf Course Using Principles Of Landscape Ecology, Brian P. Oswald, Penny G. Lanham, Hans M. Williams, David Kulhavy

Faculty Publications

The objectives of this study was to determine the vegetative diversity and the effects of the edge between fairways (introduced patches) and out-of-bounds areas (remnant patches) to determine if such management activities influence plant diversity. This study was conducted at the Pineywoods Country Club in the Pineywoods Region of East Texas near Nacogdoches, TX, USA by assessing the spatial distribution of these matrices and patches and their influence on edge effect composition and structure in the matrix; and, if species diversity and composition differed between these edges and interior of the matrices. Nested plots were placed along transects and canopy …

Agriculture, Water Pollution, And The Future Of Epa’S Regulatory Authority In A Post-American Farm Bureau Federation V. U.S. Epa America, Henry Brudney

Seattle Journal of Environmental Law

Until the recent decision of American Farm Bureau Federation v. U.S. EPA, the EPA’s total maximum daily load (TMDL) regulation under the Clean Water Act contained no substantive standard for water quality. However, in this decision, the Third Circuit added such substantive criteria to the TMDL, which should have a monumental effect on the improvement of water quality standards in the United States.

Influence Of Slippery Pacemaker Leads On Lead-Induced Venous Occlusion, Sagar Bhatia Aug 2017

Influence Of Slippery Pacemaker Leads On Lead-Induced Venous Occlusion, Sagar Bhatia

Mechanical Engineering Master's Theses

The use of medical devices such as pacemakers and implantable cardiac defibrillators have become commonplace to treat arrhythmias. Pacing leads with electrodes are used to send electrical pulses to the heart to treat either abnormally slow heart rates, or abnormal rhythms. Lead induced vessel occlusion, which is commonly seen after placement of pacemaker or implantable cardiac defibrillators leads, may result in lead malfunction and/or superior vena cava syndrome, and makes lead extraction difficult. The association between the anatomic locations at risk for thrombosis and regions of venous stasis have been reported previously. The computational studies reveal obvious flow stasis in …

Reconstruction Of Piñon-Juniper Forest Structure To Examine Historic Wildlife Habitat Characteristics In The Davis Mountains, Usa, Brian P. Oswald, John R. Lanham, James C. Kroll, Mohammed M. Bataineh, Yanli Zhang

Faculty Publications

Changes in piñon-juniper (Pinus spp., Juniperus spp.) communities across the southwestern United States have often decreased ecological diversity of the understory and increases of exotic species. Reconstructing age and establishment patterns provides essential understanding to guide treatments and management for anthropogenically-altered forests. The goal of this study was to determine how patterns of piñon and juniper growth in the Davis Mountains, Texas, varied over time and how this pattern influenced wildlife habitat of several indicator species. Establishment patterns and basal area growth progression were identified, canopy cover estimates regressed from pre-developed canopy regression equations to re-construct historic forest stand …

A Novel Impedance Biosensor For Measurement Of Trans-Epithelial Resistance In Cells Cultured On Nanofiber Scaffolds, Robert A. Schramm, Matthew H. Koslow, Deirdre A. Nelson, Melinda Larsen, James Castracane

Biological Sciences Faculty Scholarship

Nanofibrous scaffolds provide high surface area for cell attachment, and resemble the structure of the collagen fibers which naturally occur in the basement membrane and extracellular matrix. A label free and non-destructive method of assessing the interaction of cell tissue and scaffolds aids in the ability to discern the effective quality and magnitude of any scaffold modifications. Impedance cell spectroscopy is a biosensing method that employs a functional approach to assessing the cell monolayer. The electrical impedance barrier function of a cell monolayer represents the level of restriction to diffusion of charged species between all adjacent cells across an entire …
