Synthesis, Characterization And Application Of Sugar-Based Low Molecular Weight Gelators, Ifeanyi Simeon Okafor

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

Low molecular weight gelators (LMWGs) are an interesting class of compound that have gained considerable attention especially because of their potential applications for soft biomaterials. Carbohydrate based low molecular weight hydrogelators and organogelators are able to selfassemble and form ordered supramolecular structures, which are useful for exploring biomedical applications. The resulting gelators are responsive to external stimuli because of the weak noncovalent intermolecular forces and interaction that influences self-assembly. Stimuli-responsive supramolecular organogels with interesting properties in response to external environmental stimuli have gained considerable attention due to their applications in biomaterials, sensors and for drug delivery.

One of the major …

Marine Reserves Promote Coral Reef Resilience By Mitigating Human Impacts Through The Restoration Of Parrotfish Populations, Increasing Their Reproductive Output And Seeding Neighboring Overfished Reefs, Brian L. Stockwell

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Coral reefs are some of the most productive ecosystems on the planet, providing fisheries resources for over a billion people with billions of dollars in revenue from tourism for developing nations. Coral reefs are under threat from overfishing and water pollution, resulting in less productive algae dominated reefs. Marine reserves are widely expected to promote the resilience of reefs by protecting and increasing the abundance of herbivorous fishes that can graze on algae, therefore directly or indirectly preventing coral to algal phase shifts. However, the ability of marine reserves to mitigate human impacts, restore herbivorous fish populations and seed nearby …

Efficient Machine Learning Approach For Optimizing Scientific Computing Applications On Emerging Hpc Architectures, Kamesh Arumugam Karunanithi

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

Efficient parallel implementations of scientific applications on multi-core CPUs with accelerators such as GPUs and Xeon Phis is challenging. This requires - exploiting the data parallel architecture of the accelerator along with the vector pipelines of modern x86 CPU architectures, load balancing, and efficient memory transfer between different devices. It is relatively easy to meet these requirements for highly-structured scientific applications. In contrast, a number of scientific and engineering applications are unstructured. Getting performance on accelerators for these applications is extremely challenging because many of these applications employ irregular algorithms which exhibit data-dependent control-flow and irregular memory accesses. Furthermore, these …

Background and objectives: Opioid use disorder (OUD) is a chronic disorder with relapse based on both desire for reinforcement (craving) and avoidance of withdrawal. The aversive aspect of dependence and relapse has been associated with a small brain structure called the habenula, which expresses large numbers of both opioid and nicotinic receptors. Additionally, opioid withdrawal symptoms can be induced in opioid-treated rodents by blocking not only opioid, but also nicotinic receptors. This receptor co-localization and cross-induction of withdrawal therefore might lead to genetic variation in the nicotinic receptor influencing development of human opioid dependence through its impact on the aversive …

A Phenomenological View Of Teacher Efficacy As Experienced By Secondary Teachers Engaged In The Process Of Instructional Coaching, Shaftina Fiesta Snipes

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this hermeneutic phenomenological was to describe teacher efficacy in the lived experiences of secondary teachers actively engaged in the instructional coaching process. The theoretical framework guiding this study was Albert Bandura’s (1992) social cognitive theory as it expounds upon the role efficacy plays in human agency as it encompasses teacher’s individual beliefs and past experiences, as well as, the extrinsic motivations. Teacher efficacy, the confidence a teacher holds regarding their abilities to enact student learning, can be influenced by interactions with instructional coaches. Criterion-based sampling was used to select instructional coaches (n=2) and teachers (n=10) to participate …

24-Hour Blood Pressure Variability Assessed By Average Real Variability: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Luis J. Mena, Vanessa G. Felix, Jesus D. Melgarejo, Gladys E. Maestre

School of Medicine Publications

Background-—Although 24-hour blood pressure (BP) variability (BPV) is predictive of cardiovascular outcomes independent of absolute BP levels, it is not regularly assessed in clinical practice. One possible limitation to routine BPV assessment is the lack of standardized methods for accurately estimating 24-hour BPV. We conducted a systematic review to assess the predictive power of reported BPV indexes to address appropriate quantification of 24-hour BPV, including the average real variability (ARV) index.

Methods and Results-—Studies chosen for review were those that presented data for 24-hour BPV in adults from meta-analysis, longitudinal or cross-sectional design, and examined BPV in terms …

© 2017 The Authors Unravelling patterns of relative sea-level change during previous interglacials enhances our understanding of ice sheet response to changing climate. Temperate-latitude estuarine environments have the potential to preserve continuous records of relative sea level from previous interglacial (warm) periods. This is important because, currently, we typically only have snapshots of sea-level highstands from low-latitude corals and raised palaeoshoreline indicators while the (continuous) deep-sea oxygen isotope record only provides indirect evidence of sea-level changes. Here, we focus on the Nar Valley in eastern England, in which is preserved evidence of a late middle-Pleistocene marine transgression more than 20 …

Bringing Farm Advisors Into The Sustainability Conversation: Results From A Nitrogen Workshop In The U.S. Midwest, Julie E. Doll, Adam Reimer

Journal of Extension

Increasingly, farmers are looking to private sector advisors to inform their nitrogen decisions, but little is known about these important actors. We held a Sustainable Nitrogen Roundtable workshop to bring together important groups—private sector farm advisors, Extension educators, scientists, and farmers—to discuss new research and more sustainable use of nitrogen in midwestern cropping systems. We gained important insights by reaching outside academia and including private sector farm advisors as valued participants. Ninety percent of participants found that their understanding of varied viewpoints on nitrogen management improved, and an equal proportion would recommend such a workshop to a colleague.
