Homeobox proteins, a class of well conserved transcription factors, regulate the expression of targeted genes, especially those involved in development. In filamentous fungi, homeobox genes are required for normal conidiogenesis and fruiting body formation. In the present study, we identified eight homeobox (hbx) genes in the aflatoxin-producing ascomycete, Aspergillus flavus, and determined their respective role in growth, conidiation and sclerotial production. Disruption of seven of the eight genes had little to no effect on fungal growth and development. However, disruption of the homeobox gene AFLA_069100, designated as hbx1, in two morphologically different A. flavus strains, CA14 and AF70, resulted in …

Taxonomic And Compositional Differences Of Ground-Dwelling Arthropods In Riparian Habitats In Glen Canyon, Arizona, Usa, Barbara E. Ralston, Neil S. Cobb, Sandra L. Brantley, Jacob Higgins, Charles B. Yackulic Oct 2017

Taxonomic And Compositional Differences Of Ground-Dwelling Arthropods In Riparian Habitats In Glen Canyon, Arizona, Usa, Barbara E. Ralston, Neil S. Cobb, Sandra L. Brantley, Jacob Higgins, Charles B. Yackulic

Western North American Naturalist

The disturbance history, plant species composition, productivity, and structural complexity of a site can exert bottom-up controls on arthropod diversity, abundance, and trophic structure. Regulation alters the hydrology and disturbance regimes of rivers and affects riparian habitats by changing plant quality parameters. Fifty years of regulation along the Colorado River downstream of Glen Canyon Dam has created a no-analog, postdam “lower” riparian zone close to the water’s edge that includes tamarisk (Tamarix sp.), a nonnative riparian shrub. At the same time, the predam “upper” facultative riparian zone has persisted several meters above the current flood stage. In summer 2009, …

Civility Needs To Return To Higher Education, Aldemaro Romero Jr.

Publications and Research

According to The Institute for Civility in Government, civility is “about more than just polite- ness, although politeness is a necessary first step. It is about disagreeing without disrespect, seeking com- mon ground as a starting point for dialogue about differences, listening past one’s preconceptions, and teaching others to do the same.”

If we go by current events in academia it seems that civility has all but been lost. We see students actively impeding or shouting out at outside speakers just because those guests do not adhere to a particular “party line,” a pure version of a particular ideology, or …

All Dugoni School of Dentistry Faculty Articles

Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) is the protozoan parasite that causes toxoplasmosis, a potentially fatal disease to immunocompromised patients, and which affects approximately 30% of the world's population. Previously, we showed that purinergic signaling via the P2X7 receptor contributes to T. gondii elimination in macrophages, through reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and lysosome fusion with the parasitophorous vacuole. Moreover, we demonstrated that P2X7 receptor activation promotes the production of anti-parasitic pro-inflammatory cytokines during early T. gondii infection in vivo. However, the cascade of signaling events that leads to parasite elimination via P2X7 receptor activation remained to be elucidated. Here, we investigated …

Exopolysaccharides Regulate Calcium Flow In Cariogenic Biofilms, Monika Astasov-Frauenhoffer, Muth M. Varenganayil, Alan W. Decho, Tuomas Waltimo, Olivier Braissant

Faculty Publications

Caries-associated biofilms induce loss of calcium from tooth surfaces in the presence of dietary carbohydrates. Exopolysaccharides (EPS) provide a matrix scaffold and an abundance of primary binding sites within biofilms. The role of EPS in binding calcium in cariogenic biofilms is only partially understood. Thus, the aim of the present study is to investigate the relationship between the calcium dissolution rates and calcium tolerance of caries-associated bacteria and yeast as well as to examine the properties of EPS to quantify its binding affinity for dissolved calcium. Calcium dissolution was measured by dissolution zones on Pikovskaya’s agar. Calcium tolerance was assessed …

Uno Open Access Fund Statistics: What Do They Tell Us?, Yumi Ohira

Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Institutional digital repositories provide open access to research outputs created within a university or research institution. Many institutions currently support open access by paying article processing charges (APC) for their affiliated faculty and researchers. The University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) Libraries started the Open Access (OA) Fund program in 2014 to help cover the APC of tenure-track UNO authors. The fundamental goals of the UNO OA Fund is to include and encourage the UNO community to publish their research in an OA journal and platform, DigitalCommons@UNO (http://digitalcommons.unomaha.edu/).

This poster focuses on sharing the OA Fund management and …

Wildland Recreation Disturbance: Broad‐Scale Spatial Analysis And Management, Kevin J. Gutzwiller, Ashley D'Antonio, Christopher Monz Oct 2017

Wildland Recreation Disturbance: Broad‐Scale Spatial Analysis And Management, Kevin J. Gutzwiller, Ashley D'Antonio, Christopher Monz

Environment and Society Faculty Publications

Wildland recreation that does not involve animal harvests (non‐consumptive recreation) often influences various components of natural systems, including soils, water, air, soundscapes, vegetation, and wildlife. The effects of non‐consumptive recreation on wildlife have typically been assessed at spatial scales that are not only much smaller than the overall distributions of this disturbance but also much smaller than the areas that species use during a season or year. This disparity in scales has prevented effective assessment and management of broad‐scale recreation disturbance for many species, especially wildlife. We applied three software systems (ArcGIS, FRAGSTATS, and Conefor) to demonstrate how metrics commonly …

Discrete Pre-Processing Step Effects In Registration-Based Pipelines, A Preliminary Volumetric Study On T1-Weighted Images, Nathan M. Muncy, Ariana M. Hedges-Muncy, C. Brock Kirwan Oct 2017

Discrete Pre-Processing Step Effects In Registration-Based Pipelines, A Preliminary Volumetric Study On T1-Weighted Images, Nathan M. Muncy, Ariana M. Hedges-Muncy, C. Brock Kirwan

Faculty Publications

Pre-processing MRI scans prior to performing volumetric analyses is common practice in MRI studies. As pre-processing steps adjust the voxel intensities, the space in which the scan exists, and the amount of data in the scan, it is possible that the steps have an effect on the volumetric output. To date, studies have compared between and not within pipelines, and so the impact of each step is unknown. This study aims to quantify the effects of preprocessing steps on volumetric measures in T1-weighted scans within a single pipeline. It was our hypothesis that pre-processing steps would significantly impact ROI volume …

Effects Of Various Photoperiods On Color And Pubescence In Thyanta Pallidovirens Accerra (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), J. E. Mcpherson

The Great Lakes Entomologist

The effects of a range of developmental photoperiods on adult dimorphism in Thyanta pallidovirens accerra were studied under laboratory conditions. Adults reared in photo- phases of 14L and higher had short pubescence and those in 12L and lower, long pu- bescence. No dimorphism in color was produced in these same photophases.

Effect On Constant Versus Fluctuating Temperature Regimes On Bathyplectes Curculionis (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) Activity, Robert J. Barney, E. J. Armbrust, R. D. Pausch, S. J. Roberts Oct 2017

Effect On Constant Versus Fluctuating Temperature Regimes On Bathyplectes Curculionis (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) Activity, Robert J. Barney, E. J. Armbrust, R. D. Pausch, S. J. Roberts

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Individual female Bathyplectes curculionis parasites were exposed to either a series of constant or fluctuating temperature regimes and supplied with a new group of host Hypera postica larvae every day. The fluctuating temperatures were calculated from an average of weekly air temperatures during a period of actual field oviposition by the parasite. The rearing of adult parasites under a constant versus fluctuating temperature regime resulted in no significant difference in parasitism, longevity, or fecundity. The threshold for B. curculionis activity was estimated to be 6-8°C.

Biology Of The Hyperparasitic Wasp Perilampus Similis (Hymenoptera: Perilampidae), Foster Forbes Purrington Oct 2017

Biology Of The Hyperparasitic Wasp Perilampus Similis (Hymenoptera: Perilampidae), Foster Forbes Purrington

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Planidia of the hyperparasitic wasp, Perilarnpris similis Crawford, enter their braconid host, Agathis rnetzneriae Muesebeck, during that host's active growth phase, returning to the outer surface when the host is prepupal. Second instar perilampids search for and destroy conspecific larvae on the surface of the braconid prepupae, thus eliminating super- parasitism. Planidia in primary hosts, Metzneria lappella Zeller moth larvae in burdock seeds, unparasitized by the braconid persist without further development through pupation and occur in various tissues of the adult moth.

An Outbreak Of The Saddled Prominent Caterpillar, Heteocampa Guttivitta (Lepidoptera: Notodontidae) On Beaver Island, Michigan, Alice Loesch, Jeffry Foran

The Great Lakes Entomologist

(excerpt)

In 1975 and 1976 an outbreak of the saddled prominent caterpillar, Heterocarnpa guttivitta (Walker) was observed in Beech-Maple climax forests on Beaver Island, Michigan. The adult guttivitta moths emerge in late May and early June, mate, and lay small (1 mm) eggs on the underside of leaves. One female lays about 500 of the green spheres. In 9-10 days the eggs hatch, and the larvae go through characteristic changes in form and markings through the following five instars (Allen, 1972).

Diagnoses, Distribution, And Comparative Life History Notes On Aaroniella Maculosa (Aaron) And A. Eertmoedi N.Sp. (Psocoptera: Philotarsidae), Edward L. Mockford

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Two species formerly confused under the name Aaroniella maculosa (Aaron) are separated in all life history stages. Application of the name maculosa was determined by examination of the type. The other species is new and is named (A. eertmoedi) and described. It is parthenogenetic, apparently with no males. The ranges of the two species are largely distinct but show some overlap.

Observations Of The Habits Of Lygaeus Kalmii Angustomarginatus (Hemiptera: Lygaeidae) In Southern Michigan, Linda-Margaret Hunt

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Lygaeus kalmii Stal (Hemiptera: Lygaeidae) is an insect found throughout the eastern United States and Canada. There is extensive taxonomic literature on this insect (Stil, 1874; Townsend, 1887; Parshey, 1919, 1923; Slater and Knopf, 1969), but very little attention has been given to the rest of its biology. This study describes the habits of kalmii populations in southern Michigan.

The Life Cycle Of The Mayfly Stenacron Interpunctatum (Ephemeroptera: Heptageniidae), W. P. Mccafferty, B. L. Huff Jr Oct 2017

The Life Cycle Of The Mayfly Stenacron Interpunctatum (Ephemeroptera: Heptageniidae), W. P. Mccafferty, B. L. Huff Jr

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Larval growth and development of Stenacron interpunctatum was studied for a one year period at Wildcat Creek, Indiana. Analysis of developmental stages and sue classes revealed three broods at different degrees of maturation at any one time of year. Broods emerged in early spring, mid-summer, and late summer-early fall, respectively; the former two overwintering in different stages of larval development, and the latter completing development in one growing season in warm temperatures and maturing at relatively smaller sizes. The population possessed a complex life cycle ranging from one generation per year to three generations every two years. General sampling over …

Dorsal And Ventral Color Patterns In A South Georgia Population Of Agkistrodon Piscivorus Contanti, The Florida Cottonmouth, David L. Bechler, Joseph A. Kirkley Mr., John F. Elder Oct 2017

Dorsal And Ventral Color Patterns In A South Georgia Population Of Agkistrodon Piscivorus Contanti, The Florida Cottonmouth, David L. Bechler, Joseph A. Kirkley Mr., John F. Elder

Georgia Journal of Science

We examined dorsal pigments and ventral patterns in the Florida Cottonmouth, Agkistrodon piscivorus conanti, in the Alapahoochee watershed, Lowndes County, Georgia. Cottonmouths darken as they age; but the process has not been quantified in the literature. Thus, we examined both graphically and statistically changes in dorsal color pattern that occurs when snout vent length (SVL) increases as well as discrete patterns involving splotching and block-like patterns, and cream to white coloration on the ventral surface, which indicate underlying genetic factors. Snakes with SVLs between approximately 26.8 and 120.3 cm possessed an array of dorsal colors involving white, tan, dark …

Reflections On Forty Years Of Private Practice And Sustained Pro Bono Advocacy, Stephen H. Oleskey Oct 2017

Reflections On Forty Years Of Private Practice And Sustained Pro Bono Advocacy, Stephen H. Oleskey

Maine Law Review

I am going to address two topics. The first is the one Judge Coffin asked me to address in October 2009, when I was invited to give the 2010 Coffin Lecture: how to combine the private practice of law with an active pro bono practice. The second topic is the one Dean Peter Pitegoff and I agreed to add: a brief discussion of legal developments in national security law since 9/11. My pro bono involvement in Guantanamo Habeas litigation began in 2004 and led directly to my interest in national security law and to my recognition of how difficult it …
