A Legal History Of Adoption In Ontario, 1921-2015, By Lori Chambers, Adam Giancola
A Legal History Of Adoption In Ontario, 1921-2015, By Lori Chambers, Adam Giancola
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
During the period of the Great War—when the rest of the world had its eyes turned towards Europe—the province of Ontario found itself in the midst of a domestic crisis. Only two decades earlier, the provincial government had enacted legislation giving the newly-founded Children’s Aid Society (CAS) the authority to identify and protect neglected and maltreated children. This legislation emerged out of a concern over juvenile delinquency, but its range was limited: services for children were given little financial backing, and CAS workers were only locally regulated. By the end of the Great War, then, concerns about rising rates of …

Chasing Justice: The Monumental Task Of Undoing A Capital Conviction And Death Sentence, Jennifer L. Givens
Arkansas Law Review
After the botched 2014 execution of Clayton Lockett in Oklahoma, John Oliver tackled the issue of the death penalty on the second episode of his HBO show, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. Oliver opens the discussion with a sound bite from former U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, who says, “I [] do believe in the death penalty, but [] only with respect to those [that] are guilty of committing the crime.” Oliver responds, “Okay, bold idea. We shouldn’t execute innocent people. I think most people would probably agree with that. You, sir, are a regular Atticus Finch. But [] …

Digital Commons - Heartland User Group + IR Day
Institutional digital repositories provide open access to research outputs created within a university or research institution. Many institutions currently support open access by paying article processing charges (APC) for their affiliated faculty and researchers. The University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) Libraries started the Open Access (OA) Fund program in 2014 to help cover the APC of tenure-track UNO authors. The fundamental goals of the UNO OA Fund is to include and encourage the UNO community to publish their research in an OA journal and platform, DigitalCommons@UNO (http://digitalcommons.unomaha.edu/).
This poster focuses on sharing the OA Fund management and …
Updating New York’S Constitutional Environmental Rights, Nicholas A. Robinson
Updating New York’S Constitutional Environmental Rights, Nicholas A. Robinson
Pace Law Review
The stakes are high as New York State considers whether to amend the constitution. The electorate contemplates the gathering crises of sea level rise, disruption of weather patterns, intensified summer heat waves, and other climate change impacts. New York also faces escalating environmental problems, which the newly perceived climate impacts in turn exacerbate. It is timely to debate whether or not New York should recognize the right to the environment to its constitution. In 2016, the House of Delegates of the New York State Bar Association adopted the report of its committee on the constitution, regarding the environmental conservation article …
Subnational Environmental Constitutionalism And Reform In New York State, James R. May
Subnational Environmental Constitutionalism And Reform In New York State, James R. May
Pace Law Review
The State of New York’s constitution was perhaps the first in the world to embody environmental constitutionalism, most directly in what is known as its “Forever Wild” mandate from 1894. In contrast to many subnational environmental provisions, courts in New York have regularly enforced Forever Wild. New York’s Constitution also contains a remarkable mandate that every twenty years voters decide whether to hold elections for delegates to convene a convention to amend the state’s constitution, with the next such opportunity on November 7, 2017. This article explores how subnational constitutionalism from around the world informs discussions about whether and how …
Magnatic Nanoparticles And Nanocomposites: Development For Medical And Environmental Applications, J. Zach Hilt
Magnatic Nanoparticles And Nanocomposites: Development For Medical And Environmental Applications, J. Zach Hilt
Amgen Seminar Series in Chemical Engineering
We apply chemical engineering fundamentals to the rational design, synthesis, and application of novel nanoparticle systems and macromolecular materials. In particular, we are interested in designing and applying advanced materials based on magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) and nanocomposites. Magnetic nanocomposites are a relatively new class of advanced materials, which have attracted interest as intelligent materials for biomaterial and other applications. In our lab, we are primarily interested in MNPs due to their ability to respond to an alternating magnetic field (AMF) resulting in local energy delivery and potentially localized heating. We have incorporated MNPs into nanocomposites that exhibit new and unique …

Automagical Faculty Works, Helena Marvin, Zoe J. Scala
Digital Commons - Heartland User Group + IR Day
In this presentation, how the University of Missouri-St. Louis Institutional Repository Library is using a combination of Zotero, Google Apps and Sherpa Romeo to discover faculty works that can be shared, will be examined. Automagical is defined by dictionary.com as an adjective describing something that is "happening in a way that is hidden from or not understood by the user, and in that sense, apparently "magical." "The automagical aspects of this process will be explored, but not so deeply as to make them non-magical.

Balancing Open Source Paradigms And Traditional Intellectual Property Models To Optimize Innovation, Lisa M. Mandrusiak
Balancing Open Source Paradigms And Traditional Intellectual Property Models To Optimize Innovation, Lisa M. Mandrusiak
Maine Law Review
Copyrights and patents grant property rights to creators and inventors in order to spur further innovation through the dual approach of increasing the amount of material in the public domain and rewarding inventors and creators for their efforts. However, in recent years, it has been postulated that extensive granting of copyrights and patents may in fact stifle additional creation and development. This led to a revolt in the computer programming industry and spawned the open source movement, which provides software with its source code and a license allowing for free creation and distribution of works. This movement attempts to spur …

The genus Mesorhizobium contains many species that are able to form nitrogen-fixing nodules on plants of the legume family. Here, we report the draft genome sequences for three Mesorhizobium strains. The genome sizes of strains LCM 4576, LCM 4577, and ORS3428 were 7.24, 7.02, and 6.55 Mbp, respectively.

Xenotransplantation, Subsistence Hunting And The Pursuit Of Health: Lessons For Animal Rights-Based Vegan Advocacy, Nathan M. Nobis
Xenotransplantation, Subsistence Hunting And The Pursuit Of Health: Lessons For Animal Rights-Based Vegan Advocacy, Nathan M. Nobis
Between the Species
I argue that, contrary to what Tom Regan suggests, his rights view implies that subsistence hunting is wrong, that is, killing animals for food is wrong even when they are the only available food source, since doing so violates animal rights. We can see that subsistence hunting is wrong on the rights view by seeing why animal experimentation, specifically xenotransplanation, is wrong on the rights view: if it’s wrong to kill an animal to take organs to save a human life, it’s wrong to kill an animal to eat that animal to save a human life or improve …
