Common Core State Standards And Text Complexity: An Invitation To Learn Language In Stem Disciplines Using A Range Of Quality Literature, Rebecca M. Giles, Leah Kinniburgh
The Journal of Balanced Literacy Research and Instruction
The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) emphasize literacy learning within history/social studies, science, and technical subjects making students’ reading, writing, and language development every teacher’s concern, regardless of the discipline being taught. Books related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) can enhance students’ knowledge of key terms and concepts as they are revealed in authentic contexts. Students who often struggle harder to understand advanced vocabulary embedded in stories or in difficult, yet interestingly presented nonfiction gain an increased print vocabulary by reading quality STEM-aligned literature selections that exhibit the characteristics of complexity and richness of language advocated by CCSS. …
Morphodynamics Of Atolls, Reef Flats, And The Islands Atop Them, Andrew Ashton
Morphodynamics Of Atolls, Reef Flats, And The Islands Atop Them, Andrew Ashton
Sustainability Seminar Series
The atolls that dot the tropical oceans of (primarily) the Pacific and Indian Oceans contain shallow and emergent coastal environments that often comprise the only subaerial, inhabitable land of many island chains and island nations. Created foremost by calcifying organisms, and composed of both biogenic rocky substrate and detrital sediment, these shallow environments are shaped by waves, currents, and tides. The low-lying, geomorphically active reef islands sitting atop of atolls face considerable hazards from climate change. I will present a series of recent and ongoing research projects addressing the formation mechanisms and potential climate change response of coastal atoll environments, …

Latinx And Caucasian Elementary School Children’S Knowledge Of And Interest In Engineering Activities, Gamze Ozogul, Cindy Faith Miller, Martin Reisslein
Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)
Ethnic minorities, such as Latinx people of Hispanic or Latino origin, and women earn fewer engineering degrees than Caucasians and men. With shifting population dynamics and high demands for a technically qualified workforce, it is important to achieve broad participation in the engineering workforce by all ethnicities and both genders. Previous research has examined the knowledge of and interest in engineering among students in grades five and higher. In contrast, the present study examined elementary school students in grades K–5. The study found that older students in grades 4 and 5 had both greater knowledge of engineering occupational activities and …

Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy of proteins (protein NMR) is a powerful analytical technique for studying structure and dynamics of proteins. Almost all aspects of protein NMR have been accelerated by the development of software tools that enable the analysis of NMR spectral data and its utilization in studying protein structure and dynamics. This includes software for raw NMR processing, spectral visualization, protein resonance assignment, and structure determination. However, full automation of protein NMR data analysis is still a work in progress and data analysis still requires an expert NMR spectroscopist utilizing an array of software tools.
While manual resonance assignment …

The lamprey genome provides unique insights into both the deep evolutionary history of vertebrate genomes and the maintenance of genome structure/integrity over development. The lamprey lineage diverged from all other vertebrates approximately 500 million years ago. As such, comparisons between lamprey and other vertebrates permit reconstruction of ancient duplication and rearrangement events that defined the fundamental architecture and gene content of all extant vertebrate genomes. Lamprey also undergoes programmatic changes genome structure that result in the physical elimination of ~20% of its genomic DNA (~0.5Gb from a ~2 Gb genome) from all somatic cell lineages during early embryonic development. Here, …

Use Of Hpc To Analyze Changes In Gene Expression During Fruit Fly Spermiogenesis, Sepideh Dadkhah, Douglas A. Harrison, Jeramiah J. Smith
Commonwealth Computational Summit
In the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, JAK/STAT signaling during spermiogenesis is known to play a crucial role in the maintenance of stem cells of the testis. Recent studies in our lab have shown that activation of the JAK/STAT pathway in somatic cyst cells is also required for the later stages of spermiogenesis like individualization.
The main goal of this project is to characterize the events downstream of JAK/STAT signaling in spermiogenesis and more specifically to determine the mechanism by which JAK/STAT activation regulates individualization, a later stage in spermiogenesis where 64 individual spermatids are formed from a 64-interconnected spermatid …

Aberrant Coordination Geometries Discovered In Most Abundant Metalloproteins, Sen Yao, Robert M. Flight, Eric C. Rouchka, Hunter N. B. Moseley
Commonwealth Computational Summit
Metalloproteins play crucial biochemical roles in our body and are essential across all domains of life. The structural environment around a metal ion, especially the coordination geometry (CG), is both sequentially and functionally relevant. Studies of the metalloprotein’s CG will greatly help alleviate the imbalance between the ample sequence data available and the insufficient knowledge on protein functions. Current methodologies in characterizing metalloproteins’ CG consider only previously reported CG (canonical CG) models based primarily on nonbiological chemical context. Exceptions to these canonical CG models can greatly hamper the ability to characterize metalloproteins both structurally and functionally.

Integrative Computational Modeling For Developing Means To Manipulate Biological Cells And For Solving Complex Engineering Problems, Yu Zhao, Guigen Zhang
Commonwealth Computational Summit
Computational modeling has become more widely used to guide the design of microfluidic devices for manipulating cells using Dielectrophoresis (DEP), and devise novel means for advancing the study of cellular science and engineering. Conventionally, cells are treated as volumeless points in the system, which allows study of the movement of groups of particles under the effect of field. However, this approach often neglects the distortion effect of particle on external field, as well as interactions among particles. Moreover, it ignores the complex inner structures of cell, which are the causes of distinctive cell behavior. To more accurately model the behavior …

Why Do We Care?: A Natural History Of Noddings’ Ethical Theory, Walter Jason Niedermeyer
Why Do We Care?: A Natural History Of Noddings’ Ethical Theory, Walter Jason Niedermeyer
Between the Species
Noddings’ theory of caring, which is nearing its 35th anniversary, has failed to garner the attention of the more classical theories of ethics. This slight may be due to its relative youth, or the historical support for other constructs, but if examined through the lens of evolutionary biology, the validity of Noddings might be tested. Using recent discoveries from the emerging fields of cognitive ethology and neuroscience, I have evaluated whether there exists evolutionary underpinnings for her theory. My analysis makes it apparent that the empathy and altruism required for the practice of caring are as much a product …

Methods Of Temperature & Metabolism Reduction In Rats And Possible Influence On Human Health, Isaac R. Bailey
Chemistry and Biochemistry
Spaceflight poses unique and significant hazards; the maintenance of human health remains a large part of the National Aeronautic and Space Administration (NASA) strategic goals and work remains to be done if we wish to maintain a long-term presence in space. The effects of ionizing radiation and bone density loss are some of the primary health related problems which need to be addressed. One of the main purposes of this research is to translate aspects of thermoregulation and metabolism reduction in hibernating species to a non-hibernating species in- order to devise alternative methods of preventing DNA damage and loss of …

Noroviruses can establish chronic infections with active viral shedding in healthy humans but whether persistence is associated with adaptive immune dysfunction is unknown. We used genetically engineered strains of mouse norovirus (MNV) to investigate CD8+ T cell differentiation during chronic infection. We found that chronic infection drove MNV-specific tissue-resident memory (Trm) CD8+ T cells to a differentiation state resembling inflationary effector responses against latent cytomegalovirus with only limited evidence of exhaustion. These MNV-specific Trm cells remained highly functional yet appeared ignorant of ongoing viral replication. Pre-existing MNV-specific Trm cells provided partial protection against chronic infection but largely ceased …
