Amending The Virginia Residential Landlord-Tenant Act Regarding Liability For Bedbug Extermination, Lisa Allen Oct 2017

Amending The Virginia Residential Landlord-Tenant Act Regarding Liability For Bedbug Extermination, Lisa Allen

Richmond Public Interest Law Review

An addition to the Virginia Code has caused complications for residential tenants who experience bedbugs in their rental units. A proposed amendment to this law will hold landlords liable for dealing with bedbugs infestations because landlords are in a position that makes them most able to afford treatment. This amendment would also address bedbugs effectively according to scientific research and align with federal housing guidelines.

Theses and Dissertations

Leishmaniasis, as defined by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, is a neglected tropical disease with 1.6 million new cases reported each year. However, there is yet to be safe, effective, and affordable treatments provided to those affected by this disease1. Still underappreciated as a potential pharmaceutical targets, especially for cutaneous leishmaniasis infections, are the two isozymes of secreted acid phosphatase (SAP); secreted acid phosphatase 1 (SAP1) and secreted acid phosphatase 2 (SAP2). These enzymes are involved in the survival of the parasite in the sand fly vector, and the prevention of host macrophages from forming parasitophorous vacuole and …

Tnf-Α Promotes Nuclear Enrichment Of The Transcription Factor Tonebp/Nfat5 To Selectively Control Inflammatory But Not Osmoregulatory Responses In Nucleus Pulposus Cells., Zariel I. Johnson, Alexandra C. Doolittle, Joseph W. Snuggs, Irving M. Shapiro, Christine L. Le Maitre, Makarand V. Risbud

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Papers

Intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD) causes chronic back pain and is linked to production of proinflammatory molecules by nucleus pulposus (NP) and other disc cells. Activation of tonicity-responsive enhancer-binding protein (TonEBP)/NFAT5 by non-osmotic stimuli, including proinflammatory molecules, occurs in cells involved in immune response. However, whether inflammatory stimuli activate TonEBP in NP cells and whether TonEBP controls inflammation during IDD is unknown. We show that TNF-α, but not IL-1β or LPS, promoted nuclear enrichment of TonEBP protein. However, TNF-α-mediated activation of TonEBP did not cause induction of osmoregulatory genes. RNA sequencing showed that 8.5% of TNF-α transcriptional responses were TonEBP-dependent and …

Learning A Language: The Gateway To Cosmopolitanism, Caleb Griffin

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the relationship between language acquisition and ethnocentrism. Specifically, does learning additional languages reduce ethnocentrism in an individual? After reviewing the literature on social groups, ethnocentrism, and language acquisition, a quantitative test was carried out. This consisted of a survey design implemented in Morocco using Moroccan subjects. Although learning additional languages was correlated with less ethnocentrism, the results did not meet the threshold for statistical significance. The variables that did have a statistically significant impact on ethnocentrism and prejudice were contact and age.

A "Delicate Balance": How Agency Nonacquiescence And The Epa's Water Transfer Rule Dilute The Clean Water Act After Catskill Mountains Chapter Of Trout Unlimited, Inc. V. City Of New York, Kevin J. Haskins

Maine Law Review

Congress enacted the Clean Water Act (CWA) in 1972 with the express objective of restoring and maintaining the health of the nation’s waters. To achieve this objective, Congress declared that discharges of pollutants into the nation’s waters are prohibited unless they comply with permit requirements. The CWA’s primary vehicle for regulating discharge permits is the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System, or NPDES. The CWA defines the phrase “discharge of a pollutant” as the “addition of any pollutant to navigable waters from any point source.” Although the CWA further defines the terms “pollutant,” “navigable waters,” and “point source,” it fails to …

Gender And Nation-Building: Family Law As Legal Architecture, Tracy E. Higgins, Rachel P. Fink

Maine Law Review

In considering the legal architecture of nation-building, we might most readily think of public law as our subject insofar as it governs the relationship between the individual and the state, and establishes the institutions of governance and the sources and limits of their power. The essays in this volume, in large part, track this instinct in that they concern themselves with fields such as constitutional law, criminal law, and public international law. Closer to the margin of public and private law are essays dealing with various dimensions of the modern regulatory state, including banking and commercial transactions. In each of …

Structural Optimization And Behavioral Analysis Of Antagonists Of The Insect Odorant Receptor Co-Receptor Subunit, Devin Kepchia Oct 2017

Structural Optimization And Behavioral Analysis Of Antagonists Of The Insect Odorant Receptor Co-Receptor Subunit, Devin Kepchia

Open Access Dissertations

Response to volatile environmental chemosensory cues is essential for insect survival. The odorant receptor (OR) family is an important class of receptors that detects volatile molecules. Importantly, olfaction is a key component of the multimodal approach used by mosquitoes to target and feed on humans. Current repellents have drawbacks, necessitating development of more effective agents. Insect ORs are odorant-gated ion channels, consisting of a variable odorant specificity subunit and a conserved odorant receptor co-receptor (Orco) subunit. The Orco subunit possesses an allosteric site to which modulators can bind and inhibit odorant activation of ORs. All insect ORs contain Orco, and …
