Evaluation Of Reproductive Phenology And Ecology Of Eastern Wild Turkey (Meleagris Gallopavo Silvestris) In South Carolina, Patrick Wightman Nov 2017

Evaluation Of Reproductive Phenology And Ecology Of Eastern Wild Turkey (Meleagris Gallopavo Silvestris) In South Carolina, Patrick Wightman

LSU Master's Theses

Many southeastern states, including South Carolina, in the last 10 -15 years have seen a decline in Eastern wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo silvestris) populations. Around 50,000 turkey hunters in South Carolina, result in approximately 35 million annually in revenue. Turkeys encounter a unique situation as environmental variation and hunter activity may impact behaviors as hunting occurs during the reproductive season. Mistimed hunting seasons could result in population declines. Timing of harvest requires managers to implement seasons that allow for hunter satisfaction (hearing gobbles) while ensuring no detriment to turkey populations through impacts to reproduction. To better understand factors influencing gobbling …

Distribution Of Abundant And Active Planktonic Ciliates In Coastal And Slope Waters Off New England, Sarah J. Tucker, George B. Mcmanus, Laura A. Katz, Jean-David Grattepanche Nov 2017

Distribution Of Abundant And Active Planktonic Ciliates In Coastal And Slope Waters Off New England, Sarah J. Tucker, George B. Mcmanus, Laura A. Katz, Jean-David Grattepanche

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Despite their important role of linking microbial and classic marine food webs, data on biogeographical patterns of microbial eukaryotic grazers are limited, and even fewer studies have used molecular tools to assess active (i.e., those expressing genes) community members. Marine ciliate diversity is believed to be greatest at the chlorophyll maximum, where there is an abundance of autotrophic prey, and is often assumed to decline with depth. Here, we assess the abundant (DNA) and active (RNA) marine ciliate communities throughout the water column at two stations off the New England coast (Northwest Atlantic)—a coastal station 43 km from shore (40 …

Formation Of Highly Functionalized Indole Through Carbon-Carbon Bond Cleavage, Ryan A. S. Pike Nov 2017

Formation Of Highly Functionalized Indole Through Carbon-Carbon Bond Cleavage, Ryan A. S. Pike

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Indoles are one of the most abundant heterocycles found in nature and have a wide range of functions. There are a wide variety of indole synthesis methods known both in synthetic chemistry and through biosynthesis. Many of the known indole synthesis routes use a benzene derivative or cyclized ring structure derivative as a starting material. Here, we describe a novel synthetic method utilizing 1, 3-diketones and fumaronitrile with a catalytic amount of base to form a highly functionalized indole as our product. We have isolated and characterized 12 functionalized indoles.

An Efficient Pipeline To Generate Data For Studies In Plastid Population Genomics And Phylogeography, Brendan F. Kohrn, Jessica M. Persinger, Mitchell B. Cruzan Nov 2017

An Efficient Pipeline To Generate Data For Studies In Plastid Population Genomics And Phylogeography, Brendan F. Kohrn, Jessica M. Persinger, Mitchell B. Cruzan

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Premise of the study: Seed dispersal contributes to gene flow and is responsible for colonization of new sites and range expansion. Sequencing chloroplast haplotypes offers a way to estimate contributions of seed dispersal to population genetic structure and enables studies of population history. Whole‐genome sequencing is expensive, but resources can be conserved by pooling samples. Unfortunately, haplotype associations among single‐nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are lost in pooled samples, and treating SNP allele frequencies as independent markers provides biased estimates of genetic structure.

Methods: We developed sampling methodologies and an application, CallHap, that uses a least‐squares algorithm to evaluate the fit between …

Fruit, Fiber, And Fire: A Cultural History Of Modern Agriculture In New Mexico, William R. Carleton Nov 2017

Fruit, Fiber, And Fire: A Cultural History Of Modern Agriculture In New Mexico, William R. Carleton

History ETDs

In New Mexico, no crops have defined the people and their landscape in the industrial era more than apples, cotton, and chile peppers. They illustrate, more than any other three crops in twentieth-century New Mexico, how agriculture has spurred migrations of plants and people, and in turn, shaped the culture of the place. The physical origins, the shifting cultural meanings, and the environmental and market requirements of these three iconic plants all broadly point to the convergence in New Mexico of diverse regional attitudes toward industry in agriculture. These three crops, all industrialized at different times in the twentieth century …

Armed Robotic Systems Emergence: Weapons Systems Life Cycles Analysis And New Strategic Realities, Robert J. Bunker Dr. Nov 2017

Armed Robotic Systems Emergence: Weapons Systems Life Cycles Analysis And New Strategic Realities, Robert J. Bunker Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

Armed robotic systems—drones and droids—now emerging on the battlefield portend new strategic realities not only for U.S. forces but also for our allies and future potential belligerents. Numerous questions of immediate warfighting importance come to mind with the fielding of these drones and droids that are viewed as still being in their experimental and entrepreneurial stage of development. By drawing upon historical weapons systems life cycles case studies, focusing on the early 9th through the mid-16th-century knight, the mid-19th through the later 20th-century battleship, and the early 20th through the early 21st-century tank, the monograph provides military historical context related …

Both Adhe And A Separate Nadph-Dependent Alcohol Dehydrogenase Gene, Adha, Are Necessary For High Ethanol Production In Thermoanaerobacterium Saccharolyticum, Tianyong Zheng, Daniel G. Olson, Sean J. Murphy, Xiongjun Shao, Liang Tian, Lee Lynd Nov 2017

Murphy, Xiongjun Shao, Liang Tian, Lee Lynd

Dartmouth Scholarship

Thermoanaerobacterium saccharolyticum has been engineered to produce ethanol at ∼90% theoretical yield and titer of 70 g/L. Its ethanol-producing ability has drawn attention to its metabolic pathways, which could potentially be transferred to other organisms of interest. Here we report that the iron-containing AdhA is important for ethanol production in the high-ethanol strain of T. saccharolyticum (LL1049). A single-gene deletion of adhA in LL1049 reduced ethanol production by ∼50%, whereas multiple gene deletions of all annotated alcohol dehydrogenases except adhA and adhE did not affect ethanol production. Deletion of adhA in wild-type T. saccharolyticum reduced NADPH-linked ADH activity (acetaldehyde-reducing) by …

Whole Genome Sequencing Of Rhodotorula Mucilaginosa Isolated From The Chewing Stick (Distemonanthus Benthamianus): Insights Into Rhodotorula Phylogeny, Mitogenome Dynamics And Carotenoid Biosynthesis, Han Ming Gan, Bolaji N. Thomas, Nicole T. Cavanaugh, Grace H. Morales, Ashley N. Mayers, Michael A. Savka, Andre O. Hudson

Articles

In industry, the yeast Rhodotorula mucilaginosa is commonly used for the production of carotenoids. The production of carotenoids is important because they are used as natural colorants in food and some carotenoids are precursors of retinol (vitamin A). However, the identification and molecular characterization of the carotenoid pathway/s in species belonging to the genus Rhodotorula is scarce due to the lack of genomic information thus potentially impeding effective metabolic engineering of these yeast strains for improved carotenoid production. In this study, we report the isolation, identification, characterization and the whole nuclear genome and mitogenome sequence of the endophyte R. mucilaginosa …

Wills Eye Hospital Papers

Tumor-sequencing studies have revealed the widespread genetic diversity of melanoma. Sequencing of 108 genes previously implicated in melanomagenesis was performed on 462 patient-derived xenografts (PDXs), cell lines, and tumors to identify mutational and copy number aberrations. Samples came from 371 unique individuals: 263 were naive to treatment, and 108 were previously treated with targeted therapy (34), immunotherapy (54), or both (20). Models of all previously reported major melanoma subtypes (BRAF, NRAS, NF1, KIT, and WT/WT/WT) were identified. Multiple minor melanoma subtypes were also recapitulated, including melanomas with multiple activating mutations in the MAPK-signaling pathway and chromatin-remodeling gene mutations. These well-characterized …

Producing "Fabulous": Commodification And Ethnicity In Hair Braiding Salons, Sylviane Ngandu-Kalenga Greensword

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Black women wearing fabulous braids are a striking feature of the Afro-diasporic cultural landscape. However, the braiders and salon owners who enable this aesthetic engineering are seldom acknowledged. This dissertation investigates the experience and role of Caribbean and West and Central African women in the hair braiding industry, a rapidly growing business in the U.S. I address the complexity of these women’s multiple social roles and the multiple consciousness (King, 1988) associated with their demographic characteristics (color, ethnicity, gender, nationality, and immigrant status). The commonalities between the braiders and their mostly African American customers contrast vividly with their perception of …

The Role Of Sgs1 And Exo1 In The Maintenance Of Genome Stability., Lillian Campos-Doerfler Nov 2017

The Role Of Sgs1 And Exo1 In The Maintenance Of Genome Stability., Lillian Campos-Doerfler

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Genome instability is a hallmark of human cancers. Patients with Bloom’s syndrome, a rare chromosome breakage syndrome caused by inactivation of the RecQ helicase BLM, result in phenotypes associated with accelerated aging and develop cancer at a very young age. Patients with Bloom’s syndrome exhibit hyper-recombination, but the role of BLM and increased genomic instability is not fully characterized. Sgs1, the only member of the RecQ family of DNA helicases in Saccharomyces cerevisiae, is known to act both in early and late stages of homology-dependent repair of DNA damage. Exo1, a 5′–3′ exonuclease, first discovered to play a role …

Using Standardized Patients For Training And Evaluating Medical Trainees In Behavioral Health, Jeffrey D. Shahidullah, Paul W. Kettlewell Nov 2017

Using Standardized Patients For Training And Evaluating Medical Trainees In Behavioral Health, Jeffrey D. Shahidullah, Paul W. Kettlewell

International Journal of Health Sciences Education

Training delivered to medical students and residents in behavioral health is widely acknowledged to be inadequate. While the use of standardized patients is common in medical training and education for physical health conditions via the adherence to clinical protocols for evaluation and treatment, this approach is infrequently used for behavioral health conditions. Used under specific circumstances, standardized patient encounters have long been considered a reliable method of training and assessing trainee performance on addressing physical health conditions, and are even comparable to ratings of directly observed encounters with real patients. This paper discusses common issues and challenges that arise in …

The Pest Status Of Yellowjackets In Ohio (Hymenoptera: Vespidae), Kenneth J. Stein, Dana L. Wrensch Nov 2017

The Pest Status Of Yellowjackets In Ohio (Hymenoptera: Vespidae), Kenneth J. Stein, Dana L. Wrensch

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Since 1975 in Ohio, there has been an escalation in the number of complaints and inquiries regarding yellowjackets (Vespula and Dolichovespula spp.) to the Ohio pest control operators, the Ohio Cooperative Extension Service (OCES) County Agents and the OCES Entomologists at the Ohio State University. A survey was distributed in May 1985 to both groups in order to determine the pest status of yellowjackets in Ohio. The results of this survey strongly suggest that yelIowjackets in Ohio are largely an "economic pest", with most economic disturbances associated with homeowners, outdoor businesses, and outdoor recreational facilities.

New Host Records And Developmental Notes On The Pear Slug Caliroa Cerasi (Hymenoptera: Tenthredinidae), Feeding On Cotoneaster And Chaenomeles Species., Kenneth F. Raffa, Gregory L. Lintereur Nov 2017

New Host Records And Developmental Notes On The Pear Slug Caliroa Cerasi (Hymenoptera: Tenthredinidae), Feeding On Cotoneaster And Chaenomeles Species., Kenneth F. Raffa, Gregory L. Lintereur

The Great Lakes Entomologist

The pear slug. Caliroa cerasi was collected and reared to adulthood on flowering quince and three species of Cotoneaster. This is the first record of C. cerasi attacking any member of the genus Chaenomeles and the first confirmation of feeding on Cotoneaster in North America. Adult emergence, oviposition, and larval development were evaluated under both laboratory and field conditions. Females lay an average of 48 eggs, with about two-thirds of the oviposition occurring during their first 24 hours. A method for monitoring adult emergence in the field was developed.

Seasonal Occurrence Of Pine Root Collar Weevil, Hylobius Radicis (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), In Red Pine Stands Undergoing Decline, Kenneth F. Raffa, David J. Hall Nov 2017

Seasonal Occurrence Of Pine Root Collar Weevil, Hylobius Radicis (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), In Red Pine Stands Undergoing Decline, Kenneth F. Raffa, David J. Hall

The Great Lakes Entomologist

A trapping scheme was devised for sampling the pine root collar weevil, Hylobius radicis, in mature red pine plantations in Wisconsin. Adult weevils were trapped throughout the 1986 field season, and the method appears sensitive enough to discern temporal and spatial trends. The number of weevils caught was higher in stands symptomatic of the general condition currently labelled Red Pine Decline and Mortality. In some stands there was a strong tendency for trap catches to be particularly high near certain trees. Seasonal trends and sex ratios were compared with published reports of H. radicis activity in Michigan.

Insecticide And Growth Regulator Effects On The Leafminer, Liriomyza Trifolii (Diptera: Agromyzidae), In Celery And Observations On Parasitism, E. Grafius, J. Hayden

The Great Lakes Entomologist

The effects of different insecticides were compared on survival and development of the leafminer, L. trifolii, in celery in Michigan and parasitism was assessed in this non- resident population. Avermectin, thiocyclam, and cyromazine effectively controlled L. trifolii larvae or prevented successful emergence as adults. Moderate to high levels of resistance to permethrin and chlorpyrifos were present. Avermectin caused high mortality of all larval stages and no adults successfully emerged. Thiocyclam caused high mortality to all larval stages, but did not affect adult emergence from the surviving larvae. Cyromazine acted most strongly against early stage larvae before visible mines were …

Movement, Dispersion, And Orientation Of A Population Of The Colorado Potato Beetle, Leptinotarsa Decemlineata (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), In Eggplant, Charles E. Williams

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Short-term dispersal, dispersion, and orientation of a population of the Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata. were examined in a uniformly spaced planting of eggplant using a mark-recapture technique. Recaptures of marked beetles declined throughout the study, the greatest decline occurring 24 h after release. Dispersal of remaining beetles through the field was gradual; beetle numbers declined with distance from the release point during the first 3 days of the study and increased with distance thereafter. Beetles were highly aggregated for 3-4 days after release but were well dispersed for the remainder of the study. Dispersal of aggregated beetles may …

The Great Lakes Entomologist

The life history of Mesovelia mulsanti was studied during 1983-1986. This species was apparently trivoltine with a partial 4th generation at the end of the year. It overwintered as eggs. First ins tars appeared in mid-April followed by marked overlapping of the subsequent instars and generations. The first adults appeared in early May. No active individuals were found after November.

Observations Of The Gallery Habits Of Trypodendron Retusum (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) Infesting Aspen In Central Michigan, Steven D. Brewer, Robert A. Beck, Richard A. Roeper Nov 2017

Observations Of The Gallery Habits Of Trypodendron Retusum (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) Infesting Aspen In Central Michigan, Steven D. Brewer, Robert A. Beck, Richard A. Roeper

The Great Lakes Entomologist

A monogamous pair of adult Trypodendron retusum construct a gallery system consisting of an entrance tunnel and from two to five lateral tunnels into the sapwood of aspen. Inoculation of the mutualistic fungus Ambrosiella ferruginea by the female beetle, was followed by oviposition in shallow egg cradles. Two instars were observed as the larvae enlarged their cradles. The number of cradles per gallery system was correlated to the length of the gallery system. Progeny adults with a sex ratio of approximately 1:1 emerged from late June to early August to overwinter in the litter.

Review Of Adaptations Of Velvet Ants (Hymenoptera: Mutillidae), Mark Deyrup Nov 2017

Review Of Adaptations Of Velvet Ants (Hymenoptera: Mutillidae), Mark Deyrup

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Mutillid wasps are active and conspicuous insects, but their interactions with each other and with other animals are seldom observed. Mostly indirect evidence is used to postulate that an array of traits represents adaptations to exploit ground-nesting, aggressive, often highly dispersed hosts. The massive exoskeleton protects the parasitoid invading nests of biting and stinging hosts; certain unrelated parasitoids attacking the same hosts are similarly armored. Female aptery occurs in mutillids and in many other wasps attacking soil-dwelling hosts. In at least two mutillid lineages, female aptery apparently led to phoretic copulation, which led in turn to selection for large size …
