Effects Of Human Cadaveric Dissections In High School Biology, Brandi Pratt, James Martinez, Regina Suriel, Ellice P. Martin
Journal of Multicultural Affairs
This study was conducted in a suburban public high school, which had a connection to the local university, to measure the achievement of dual enrollment senior students using traditional hands-on (THO) cadaveric dissections compared to non-traditional (NT) virtual dissections of the human body. The outcomes of this study may assist multicultural science educators and administrators, students and parents, to understand the importance of THO cadaveric dissections compared to NT virtual dissections tools in learning gross anatomy. Also, noted is the importance of public and higher education collaboration to help bridge the science resource gaps between educational settings.
On The Job: Tina Nichols

Because We Have To: Flamenco As Survival Strategy Against Detrimental Effects Of Post- Traumatic Stress Disorder, Dolores Garcia
Because We Have To: Flamenco As Survival Strategy Against Detrimental Effects Of Post- Traumatic Stress Disorder, Dolores Garcia
Theatre & Dance ETDs
Can daily practice in flamenco training help mediate the effects of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) on the brain and body? This thesis focuses on the inner-workings of the brain and how it processes stress and trauma. This is discussed through the idea of the Fear Circuit, which is a habitual response to reminders of the original trauma; the review of a current therapy for PTSD patients-Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR); the theory that throwing (skill in speed and precision –based throwing activities), music, and dance can all work to increase strength in areas of the brain that atrophy …
Data-Driven Identification Of Patient-Specific Drug Combinations For The Treatment Of Glioblastoma, Vasileios Stathias
Data-Driven Identification Of Patient-Specific Drug Combinations For The Treatment Of Glioblastoma, Vasileios Stathias
Open Access Dissertations
Glioblastoma is the most common malignant primary adult brain tumor with a standard of care consisting of maximal surgical resection followed by radiotherapy and adjuvant temozolomide (TMZ) chemotherapy. However, despite medical advances in the field, recurrence is almost universal. As with most cancers, heterogeneity and adoptive reprogramming upon therapy, which often leads to resistance, represent huge barriers to clinical care. Novel targeted therapies, which are the foundation of precision medicine, are therefore urgently required. During the last decade, several large research consortia have generated unprecedented amounts of data to characterize and model complex biological systems and disease, in particular, cancer. …
Human Brain Transcriptome Profiles In Obesity, Chun Wu
Human Brain Transcriptome Profiles In Obesity, Chun Wu
Open Access Dissertations
Obesity is one of the leading causes of global deaths. WHO estimates that 39% of adults over 18 years of age are overweight (BMI ≥ 25kg/m2) and, currently 13% meet criteria for obesity (BMI ≥ 30kg/m2). Increased food-energy supply and a mismatched biological response patterns that evolved in a scare environment, were suggested to be major drivers of the obesity epidemic. The palatable energy dense food is excessively consumed for its hedonic characteristics; its ubiquitous availability has increased the relevance of brain reward systems in controlling food intake. Increasing evidence shows that obesity shares many mechanisms with addiction. Food addiction …

A Bayesian Method For Detecting Pairwise Associations In Compositional Data, Emma Schwager, Himel Mallick, Steffen Ventz, Curtis Huttenhower
Computer Science and Statistics Faculty Publications
Compositional data consist of vectors of proportions normalized to a constant sum from a basis of unobserved counts. The sum constraint makes inference on correlations between unconstrained features challenging due to the information loss from normalization. However, such correlations are of long-standing interest in fields including ecology. We propose a novel Bayesian framework (BAnOCC: Bayesian Analysis of Compositional Covariance) to estimate a sparse precision matrix through a LASSO prior. The resulting posterior, generated by MCMC sampling, allows uncertainty quantification of any function of the precision matrix, including the correlation matrix. We also use a first-order Taylor expansion to approximate the …

Multimodal In Situ Datalogging Quantifies Inter-Individual Variation In Thermal Experience And Persistent Origin Effects On Gaping Behavior Among Intertidal Mussels (Mytilus Californianus), Luke P. Miller, Wesley Dowd
Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences
In complex habitats, environmental variation over small spatial scales can equal or exceed larger-scale gradients. This small-scale variation may allow motile organisms to mitigate stressful conditions by choosing benign microhabitats, whereas sessile organisms may rely on other behaviors to cope with environmental stresses in these variable environments. We developed a monitoring system to track body temperature, valve gaping behavior and posture of individual mussels (Mytilus californianus) in field conditions in the rocky intertidal zone. Neighboring mussels' body temperatures varied by up to 14°C during low tides. Valve gaping during low tide and postural adjustments, which could theoretically lower …

The Effect Of Drought On The Comparative Fitness Of Purple Needle Grass (Stipa Pulchra) In The Presence Of An Invasive Weed, Grace M. Palmer, Taylor M. Purdy, Stephen D. Davis
Biology
Studies on the relative health of Stipa pulchra, a California native perennial bunchgrass, were conducted at the transplant garden on the Drescher campus of Pepperdine University in the Spring semesters of 2016 and 2017. Following the trend of other perennial native grasses, Stipa pulchra is dwindling due to competition with Avena fatua and other invasive species introduced by human activities. In 2016, in the midst of historic five-year drought in California, stomatal conductance, dark adapted fluorescence, water potential, and height of S. pulchra and A. fatua were recorded and compared. As hypothesized, the wild S. pulchra exhibited greater overall fitness-- …

Non-Hodgkin And Hodgkin Lymphomas Select For Overexpression Of Bclw., Clare M. Adams, Ramkrishna Mitra, Jerald Z. Gong, Md, Christine M. Eischen
Department of Cancer Biology Faculty Papers
Purpose: B-cell lymphomas must acquire resistance to apoptosis during their development. We recently discovered BCLW, an antiapoptotic BCL2 family member thought only to contribute to spermatogenesis, was overexpressed in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) and Burkitt lymphoma. To gain insight into the contribution of BCLW to B-cell lymphomas and its potential to confer resistance to BCL2 inhibitors, we investigated the expression of BCLW and the other antiapoptotic BCL2 family members in six different B-cell lymphomas. Experimental Design: We performed a large-scale gene expression analysis of datasets comprising approximately 2,300 lymphoma patient samples, including non-Hodgkin and Hodgkin lymphomas as well as …

Performing (Female) Masculinity In The Early Modern Ibero-Atlantic World: An Analysis Of The Mujer Varonil In Gender And Genre, Nathaniel L. Redekopp
Spanish and Portuguese ETDs
The following dissertation on the trope of the mujer varonil[1] employs bibliographical research in literary criticism and historiography to identify and describe socio-historic attitudes about gender. In particular, this dissertation examines gender as communicated by texts that use the mujer varonil, or “masculine woman”, characterization to either praise or vilify exceptional female subjects in ways that highlight normative limits for masculine and feminine gender expression. Four texts are examined: a male author writes each and each represents a literary genre that was significant in early modern Spain and Spanish America. These genres are the hagiography, the relación, the …

Background—We systematically reviewed the genetic variants associated with stroke in genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and examined the emerging priorities and opportunities for rapidly advancing stroke research in the era of Trans-Omics science.
Methods—Using the PRISMA guideline, we searched PubMed and NHGRI- EBI GWAS catalog for stroke studies from 2007 till May 2017.
Results—We included 31 studies. The major challenge is that the few validated variants could not account for the full genetic risk of stroke and have not been translated for clinical use. None of the studies included continental Africans. Genomic study of stroke among Africans presents …

Radiocarbon Chronology Of Manot Cave, Israel And Upper Paleolithic Dispersals, Bridget Alex, Omry Barzilai, Israel Hershkovitz
KIP Articles
The timing of archeological industries in the Levant is central for understanding the spread of modern humans with Upper Paleolithic traditions. We report a high-resolution radiocarbon chronology for Early Upper Paleolithic industries (Early Ahmarian and Levantine Aurignacian) from the newly excavated site of Manot Cave, Israel. The dates confirm that the Early Ahmarian industry was present by 46,000 calibrated years before the present (cal BP), and the Levantine Aurignacian occurred at least between 38,000 and 34,000 cal BP. This timing is consistent with proposed migrations or technological diffusions between the Near East and Europe. Specifically, the Ahmarian could have led …

Which Factors Influence Student Success In Intermediate Algebra, Math 101-102-103?, Linh T. Ward
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
At The University of New Mexico (UNM), Intermediate Algebra (MATH 120 and MATH 101-102-103) has historically been a so-called “killer course”, with very low pass rates: approximately 40% in Fall 2009 to Spring 2011 and about 50% from Fall 2011 to Spring 2013. Furthermore, many students failed the class multiple times. Since 2013, a computer system called ALEKS has been used to teach the course and, along with some additional interventions, on Albuquerque/Main campus success rates for MATH 101 have increased to roughly 80% and MATH 102 to about 70%. This thesis provides a strategy to identify those 20-30% as-risk …

Post-Transcriptional Regulation Of Addiction-Related Behaviors: Opposing Roles Of Nucleus Accumbens Mir-495 And Hud, Robert J. Oliver Jr.
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Substance use Disorders (SUDs) are characterized by chronic relapse after periods without symptoms. This has been hypothesized to stem from persistent alterations in corticolimbic circuit function and structure caused by drug-induced alterations in addiction-related gene (ARG) expression. Transcriptional and epigenetic regulation of ARGs and addiction-like behaviors have been well characterized but the role of post-transcriptional regulation is an understudied, yet promising field. RNA binding proteins (RBPs) are one post-transcriptional regulator of mRNA stability. HuD is a neuronal specific RBP that stabilizes mRNAs and is regulated by neuronal activity and cocaine. Another type of post-transcriptional regulator, microRNAs (miRNAs), are non-coding RNAs …

Purpose: Current clinical parameters do not stratify indolent from aggressive prostate cancer. Aggressive prostate cancer, defined by the progression from localized disease to metastasis, is responsible for the majority of prostate cancer–associated mortality. Recent gene expression profiling has proven successful in predicting the outcome of prostate cancer patients; however, they have yet to provide targeted therapy approaches that could inhibit a patient's progression to metastatic disease. Experimental Design: We have interrogated a total of seven primary prostate cancer cohorts (n = 1,900), two metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer datasets (n = 293), and one prospective cohort (n = 1,385) to assess …

Soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) suffers yield loss due to root infection from soil infestation by Heterodera glycine I. (soybean cyst nematode SCN) and Fusarium virguliforme (Aoki; sudden death syndrome (SDS)). The major locus for SCN and SDS resistance has previously been identified as Rhg1/Rfs2 (chr18; LG G) (site reference). The objective of this experiment was to compare the Sanger DNA sequence of a resistant cultivar (‘Forrest’) and two susceptible cultivars (‘Williams 82’ and ‘Asgrow A3244’). Sequences were downloaded from GenBank for Williams 82, Phytzome for A3244 and a newly sequenced BAC-B73P06 (82,157 bp) encompassing the Rfs2/Rhg1 locus. Using the …

Glycine max L. Merr., (soybean) is one of the major crops in the United States, south America and Asia. Yet, the seed yield of soybean is significantly reduced due to Heterodera glycines (Ichinohe), the soybean cyst nematode (SCN). SCN is one of the most destructive pests and pathogens of soybean because the main methods for control have proven difficult. Lineages of soybean that are resistant to SCN have been developed but it is yet unknown what all the molecular causes of this resistance are. Rhg1 and Rhg4 loci are two of about 10 loci that underlie resistance. The Rhg4 locus, …
