Exploring Identity And Negotiation Among Women Military Interrogators Through Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, James Dorough-Lewis
Exploring Identity And Negotiation Among Women Military Interrogators Through Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, James Dorough-Lewis
Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations
Post-modern feminist security studies explore how our discourse about gender and war affects the construction of security as a concept. Military narratives valorizing the masculine over the feminine have long marginalized women warriors. In recent years, images of the torture and abuse of detainees have appropriated the representation of women interrogators during the Global War on Terrorism in particular. This research applied interpretative phenomenological analysis to the narratives of women interrogators in order to challenge the silence concerning their lived experiences by addressing how women interrogators understand their experiences both as woman and as interrogators, and how they negotiated socially …

Johnny Just Come (Jjc): An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis Study On The Intra-Extended Family Conflict Experience Of Undergraduate Nigerian Immigrant College Students In The United States, Ann Maureen Nwabuzor
Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations
Within the last twenty years, the number of undergraduate-age Nigerian immigrants to the United States has substantially increased. Most young Nigerian immigrants moved to the United States for better educational opportunities for themselves. The United States is viewed as the land of opportunity for young Nigerian immigrants because of the numerous options available in American universities. However, the reality of life as an immigrant especially for young Nigerian adults is often a challenging experience. Young Nigerian immigrant students face a lot of adversity because they have to deal with issues such as a new school environment, a foreign culture and …
Perceptions Of Validity: How Knowledge Is Created, Transformed And Used In Bio-Agricultural Technology Safety Testing For The Development Of Government Policies And Regulations, Jennifer Josephs

Cattle Rustling And Its Effects Among Three Communities (Dinka, Murle And Nuer) In Jonglei State, South Sudan, Phillip T. Manyok
Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations
Inter-tribal clashes have emerged to be one of the biggest contributors to rampant insecurity witnessed in South Sudan and in Jonglei state the clashes revolve around cattle rustling. Efforts to quell the violence from government, the international community, religious movements, and other South Sudan national organizations have not yielded significant fruit yet. This qualitative case study research explores the underlying manifestation of the conflicts among three communities Nuer, Murle and Dinka, who live in Jonglei. The main objective was to explore the changing context of cattle rustling and understand the effects of conflicts related to cattle raiding in Jonglei. The …
Corruption, Culture, Context & Killing: A Phenomenological Analysis Of The Effects Of Corruption Upon Lethality And Feelings Of Insecurity In Regions Of Extreme Conflict, Mark Thaller
Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations
Like an elephant, while it may be difficult to describe, corruption is generally not difficult to recognize when observed (Tanzi, 1998, p. 564). Many countries have been, or are currently typified by both lethal conflict and massive corruption. Historically, post-conflict development programs have imposed policies of zero corruption, yet they routinely fail. Initial research into “corruption” also identified significant ambiguities and self-contradiction with the definition of corruption, itself. This study used an Existential Phenomenological methodology with 8 participants from Iraq, Afghanistan, Uganda, South Sudan and Sudan to: 1) redefine and model corruption within a global construct, 2) examine the current …
Conflict, Clergy And Culture: A Phenomenological Study Exploring The Identities And Conflict Resolution Approaches Of Jamaican Church Leaders Residing In South Florida, Davina Clarke
Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations
The study of conflict resolution has ballooned in the last few decades, but the literature remains sparse regarding leaders’ perspectives of navigating conflict. Currently, researchers have not addressed the conflict experiences of Jamaican church leaders residing in South Florida. Using phenomenology and social construction theory, I explored the lived experiences of this population as they addressed conflict. Twenty-two church leaders from Rhema Word Ministries International and affiliated organizations answered interview questions for an average of 45 to 60 minutes each. The data were transcribed, coded, and analyzed, yielding seven core themes: solving problems, exercising faith in God, demonstrating compassion, building …

Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations
This research employed a case study approach to understand emerging themes that may be garnered through documenting the lived experiences of online Deaf activists who have used the video feature available through social media outlets, such as YouTube, as a way to overcome the language barrier typically present for linguistic minorities who are leading social movements within an English-speaking, hearing majority. The focus of this study was the members of the Deaf Community that have taken to an online podium in their fight for autonomy and equality. They champion their Deaf identity, their right to agency and autonomy in areas …
Patterns Of Total Gaseous Mercury Variation Prior To And After Brownfield Remediation In Syracuse, Ny, Linghui Meng
Patterns Of Total Gaseous Mercury Variation Prior To And After Brownfield Remediation In Syracuse, Ny, Linghui Meng
Theses - ALL
Although mercury toxicity has been recognized for centuries, the atmospheric cycle of this element is still not fully understood. In order to obtain a better perspective of the dynamics of atmospheric mercury in urban areas, total gaseous mercury (TGM) was measured at a brownfield site at the Center of Excellence (CoE) in Syracuse NY from 2011 to 2016. The brownfield was removed on May 2015, and a parking lot was installed. For this study, I had a series of objectives including: (1) to understand vertical and temporal variations in TGM concentration; (2) investigate the influence of meteorological factors on TGM …
Factors Associated With Parental Treatment Attitudes And Information-Seeking Behaviors For Childhood Adhd, Lea Elizabeth Taylor
Factors Associated With Parental Treatment Attitudes And Information-Seeking Behaviors For Childhood Adhd, Lea Elizabeth Taylor
Theses - ALL
Abstract
Background: Childhood ADHD is an impairing neurodevelopmental disorder with associated long-term negative outcomes in a variety of domains. Despite this, there is a significant delay to treatment and a low rate of lifetime treatment contact for individuals with ADHD. Barriers to child treatment include parental poor symptom recognition, attitudinal barriers, evaluative barriers, fear of stigma, and structural barriers. These barriers are important to consider in the context of the family system, as parents serve as gatekeepers to mental health treatment for their children. In addition, parents’ perceptions of the quality and type of their children’s symptoms may also inform …
The Effects Of Exogenous Hormones On The Progression Of Oocytes Through Prophase I Of Meiosis, Deion Myles Burks
The Effects Of Exogenous Hormones On The Progression Of Oocytes Through Prophase I Of Meiosis, Deion Myles Burks
Theses - ALL
The process of germ cell cyst breakdown and primordial follicle formation that begins during embryonic development in mammalian ovaries is vital for future reproductive success because it establishes the total pool of viable egg cells the female will have for the rest of her life. Germ cells arrive at the gonad in the mouse at approximately 10.5 days post coitum and begin to form germline cysts through incomplete mitosis. At 13.5 days post coitum, the germ cells enter meiosis and begin to progress through prophase I of meiosis I. Germ cells progress through a series of sub-phases of prophase I …
Rooting A Successful Model For Agriculture In A Politics Of Possibility: The Case Of The Land Institute, Alicia Hullinger
Rooting A Successful Model For Agriculture In A Politics Of Possibility: The Case Of The Land Institute, Alicia Hullinger
Theses and Dissertations--Sociology
This research considers the potential for social movement organizations (SMOs) to bring about a comprehensive transformation to the current system of industrial agriculture by asking, How can a SMO outside a field of power advance an oppositional model while not being coopted by the dominant system? In Part One, I provide the background context for agricultural research systems in the U.S., describing the rise of the current landscape setting the national agenda and its consequences. To explain power dynamics, I apply a synthesis of Pierre Bourdieu’s and Raymond Williams’ relational theory models for considering the trends of dominant, alternative, …
The Contribution Of Alternative Splicing Toward The Global Control Of Sumo1 Sumoylation, Myriah Lorraine Acuna
The Contribution Of Alternative Splicing Toward The Global Control Of Sumo1 Sumoylation, Myriah Lorraine Acuna
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
SUMOylation, the attachment of the Small Ubiquitin-like Modifier (SUMO) to a target protein, is a post-translational modification similar to that of Ubiquitination in terms of the cascade of events required to produce the final modified target. However, instead of targeting proteins for degradation, as Ubiquitination usually does, SUMOylation appears to regulate many vital cellular processes including nucleocytoplasmic transport, transcription, apoptosis, protein stability, response to stress, and progression through the cell cycle (Hay, R.T, 2005). This versatility exhibited by the SUMOylation system makes it an optimal target for viral manipulation, as our laboratory has previously described for Influenza A virus (Pal, …
Optimization Of Collagen Microneedle Using Taguchi Method, Abhilash Aditya
Optimization Of Collagen Microneedle Using Taguchi Method, Abhilash Aditya
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Research is conducted to create dissolving collagen microneedles and to optimize the parameters for close to perfect dimension microneedles. A collagen microneedle patch has been developed with a micro-manufacturing process (micro-molding process). The collagen microneedles, varying in length from 300 to 600-μm may reach different targeted layers of the skin depending on the application. As the microneedles penetrate the skin they dissolve, delivering collagen through the epidermis. Such addition of collagen directly to the dermis layers allows it to be absorbed, increasing skin's strength and resilience, since it is one of the natural components of the younger looking skin. This …
Imaging Live Drosophila Brain With Two-Photon Fluorescence Microscopy, Syeed Ehsan Ahmed
Imaging Live Drosophila Brain With Two-Photon Fluorescence Microscopy, Syeed Ehsan Ahmed
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Two-photon fluorescence microscopy is an imaging technique which delivers distinct benefits for in vivo cellular and molecular imaging. Cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP), a second messenger molecule, is responsible for triggering many physiological changes in neural system. However, the mechanism by which this molecule regulates responses in neuron cells is not yet clearly understood. When cAMP binds to a target protein, it changes the structure of that protein. Therefore, studying this molecular structure change with fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) imaging can shed light on the cAMP functioning mechanism. FRET is a non-radiative dipole-dipole coupling which is sensitive to small distance …

Conformational Insights Into Aminobiphenyl-Modified Dna: Implications For Mutation And Repair, Ang Cai
Open Access Dissertations
Cancer is a major public health problem worldwide. An estimated 1.6 million new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in the United States in 2017. Most cancers are assumed to develop from the initiation of chemically induced DNA damages. Chemical carcinogens are genotoxic and they undergo enzymatic activation into reactive electrophilic species to form covalent bonds with the electron-rich DNA that form adducts. Aromatic amines are one of the most examined chemical carcinogens, and once activated, these amines attack the C-8 position of guanine to form C8-dG adducts (ABP [N-(2′-deoxyguanosin-8-yl)-2-aminobiphenyl], AF [N-(2′-deoxyguanosin-8-yl)-2-aminofluorene], and AAF [N-(2′-deoxyguanosin-8-yl)-2 acetylaminofluorene]); these formations result in …
Modeling Gas Budgets In Marginal Sea Ice Zones, Arash Bigdeli
Modeling Gas Budgets In Marginal Sea Ice Zones, Arash Bigdeli
Open Access Dissertations
Biogeochemical gas budgets at high-latitude regions and sea ice zones are a source of uncertainty in climate models. The four main processes that regulate these budgets include advection, ventilation, mixing, and accumulation/release from sea ice. Considering the scarcity of data in sea ice zones, specifically during winter time, the environment is too poorly sampled to constrain these processes through direct measurements; hence we proposed models to systematically investigate these processes. The models proposed in this dissertation consist of regional numerical ice-ocean models, 1D forward and inversion numerical models, and analytical models.
Manuscript I of this dissertation focuses on a 3D …
Novel Methods For Delivering And Promoting The Endosomal Escape Of Nucleic Acid Based Drugs: Chiral Polyamines And Hydrophobic Nanoparticle-Containing Liposomes, Ruchi Verma
Open Access Dissertations
Nucleic acid based drugs such as plasmid DNA (pDNA), small interfering RNA (siRNA), short hairpin RNA (shRNA), micro RNA (miRNA), and both antisense and antigene oligonucleotides, are potentially potent and specific compounds for therapeutic applications. Many major life threatening ailments might be treated using these molecules, and many polynucleotide products are currently in advanced clinical development. However, their successful therapeutic application is hindered due to limited delivery to their site of action in either the cytosol or the nucleus of a cell. Some of the barriers in the path of successful delivery of these biomolecules to their site of action …

Teaching Writing with Play: A Study of Community-Based Science Education in a National Park is a rhetorical ethnography designed to bring the lessons of community-based science education and science communication practices to bear on the university writing classroom. I examined how park rangers use engaged, playful methods to educate people about scientific and technical issues that affect coastal communities. Through three years of ethnographic field research and collaborative writing with the National Park Service, I investigated evolving public outreach programs at Fire Island National Seashore (FIIS) in New York during a time when heightened public contention about science-based decision-making created …
The Dynamic Nature Of Chromatin, Caitlyn M. Riedmann
The Dynamic Nature Of Chromatin, Caitlyn M. Riedmann
Theses and Dissertations--Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry
Eukaryotic organisms contain their entire genome in the nucleus of their cells. In order to fit within the nucleus, genomic DNA wraps into nucleosomes, the basic, repeating unit of chromatin. Nucleosomes wrap around each other to form higher order chromatin structures. Here we study many factors that affect, or are effected by, chromatin structure including: (1) how low-dose inorganic arsenic (iAs) changes chromatin structures and their relation to global transcription and splicing patterns, and (2) how chromatin architectural proteins (CAPs) bind to and change nucleosome dynamics and DNA target site accessibility.
Despite iAs’s non-mutagenic nature, chronic exposure to low doses …
Rad Gtpase: Identification Of Novel Regulatory Mechanisms And A New Function In Modulation Of Bone Density And Marrow Adiposity, Catherine Nicole Kaminski Withers
Rad Gtpase: Identification Of Novel Regulatory Mechanisms And A New Function In Modulation Of Bone Density And Marrow Adiposity, Catherine Nicole Kaminski Withers
Theses and Dissertations--Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry
The small GTP-binding protein Rad (RRAD, Ras associated with diabetes) is the founding member of the RGK (Rad, Rem, Rem2, and Gem/Kir) family that regulates voltage-dependent calcium channel function. Given its expression in both excitable and non-excitable cell types, the control mechanisms for Rad regulation and the potential for novel functions for Rad beyond calcium channel modulation are open questions. Here we report a novel interaction between Rad and Enigma, a scaffolding protein that also binds to the E3 ubiquitin ligase Smad ubiquitin regulatory factor 1 (Smurf1). Overexpression of Smurf1, but not …
Viral Fusion Protein Tm-Tm Interactions: Modulators Of Protein Function And Potential Antiviral Targets, Stacy Webb
Viral Fusion Protein Tm-Tm Interactions: Modulators Of Protein Function And Potential Antiviral Targets, Stacy Webb
Theses and Dissertations--Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry
Enveloped viruses, such as HIV, influenza, and Ebola, utilize surface glycoproteins to bind and fuse with a target cell membrane. This fusion event is necessary for release of viral genomic material so the virus can ultimately reproduce and spread. The recently emerged Hendra virus (HeV) is a negative-sense, single-stranded RNA paramyxovirus that presents a considerable threat to human health as there are currently no human vaccines or antivirals available. The HeV utilizes two surface glycoproteins, the fusion protein (F) and the attachment protein (G), to drive membrane fusion. Through this process, the F protein undergoes an irreversible conformational change, transitioning …
Platelet Endocytosis: Roles In Hemostasis And Innate Immunity, Meenakshi Banerjee
Platelet Endocytosis: Roles In Hemostasis And Innate Immunity, Meenakshi Banerjee
Theses and Dissertations--Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry
Endocytosis is key to fibrinogen (Fg) uptake, receptor trafficking of integrins (αIIbβ3, αvβ3) and purinergic receptors (P2Y1, P2Y12), and thereby for normal platelet function. However, platelet endocytosis could potentially be critical for actively sensing changes in vascular micro-environments and responding accordingly to what is being taken up. This is a more dynamic view of platelets as active surveyors of the vasculature; extending the importance of platelet endocytosis beyond granule biogenesis and perhaps even hemostasis. The mechanistic underpinnings of endocytosis, its importance in platelets, and the molecular machinery required …

Not all women infected with chlamydiae develop upper genital tract disease, but the reason(s) for this remains undefined. Host genetics and hormonal changes associated with the menstrual cycle are possible explanations for variable infection outcomes. It is also possible that disease severity depends on the virulence of the chlamydial inoculum. It is likely that the inoculum contains multiple genetic variants, differing in virulence. If the virulent variants dominate, then the individual is more likely to develop severe disease. Based on our previous studies, we hypothesized that the relative degree of virulence of a chlamydial population dictates the microRNA (miRNA) expression …
Roles And Services Of Probation Officers Among Rural Female Juvenile Offenders, Amy Marie Warmingham
Roles And Services Of Probation Officers Among Rural Female Juvenile Offenders, Amy Marie Warmingham
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Each year, hundreds of thousands of youth move through juvenile justice systems in the United States, and the number of female offenders is increasing. At the probation level, there appears to be a lack of services, such as mentoring, mental health services, sex education, and counseling, to meet the gender-specific needs of female juvenile delinquents in rural settings. The purpose of this study was to discover county probation officers' perceptions of girls' needs and the officers' decision-making processes related to recommending services. This case study was based on feminist criminology theory. The research questions sought to learn how probation officers …
The Role Of Inflammatory Biological Markers In Novel Pharmacotherapies For Populations With Depression, Stacey Boyer
The Role Of Inflammatory Biological Markers In Novel Pharmacotherapies For Populations With Depression, Stacey Boyer
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Current interventional pharmaceutical therapies targeted for depression are not adequate to achieve sufficient remission following treatment. Researchers explored inflammatory biomarkers as a way of understanding why treatment for depression is effective for some and not others. The purpose of this secondary data analysis study was to determine if there was a relationship between inflammatory biomarkers and treatment efficacy in persons diagnosed with depression who have demonstrated a previous lack of remission. Using the immune-cytokine paradigm of depression (POD) allowed depression to be viewed as multifaceted and a potential signal of chronic immune system activation. This secondary data analysis included findings …
Chronically Homeless Transgender Women Obtaining Social Services From Outreach Workers, Larry Jack Cameron
Chronically Homeless Transgender Women Obtaining Social Services From Outreach Workers, Larry Jack Cameron
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In the United States, homelessness is often connected to traumatic events such as domestic violence, job loss, or post incarceration experiences, frequently resulting in substance use disorders, medical issues, and related mental illnesses. Although researchers have considered how homelessness and social service interventions affect sexual and gender minority youth, they have not adequately studied the causes and effects of homelessness among transgender women. The purpose of this interpretive phenomenological study was to bridge this gap in knowledge by exploring the experiences of chronically homeless transgender women. The research question focused on the lived experiences of chronically homeless transgender women who …
Hydrogen Sulfide Regulation Of Kir Channels, Junghoon Ha
Hydrogen Sulfide Regulation Of Kir Channels, Junghoon Ha
Theses and Dissertations
Inwardly rectifying potassium (Kir) channels establish and regulate the resting membrane potential of excitable cells in the heart, brain and other peripheral tissues. Phosphatidylinositol- 4,5-bisphosphate (PIP2) is a key direct activator of ion channels, including Kir channels. Gasotransmitters, such as carbon monoxide (CO), have been reported to regulate the activity of Kir channels by altering channel-PIP2 interactions. We tested, in a model system, the effects and mechanism of action of another important gasotransmitter, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) thought to play a key role in cellular responses under ischemic conditions. Direct administration of sodium hydrogen sulfide (NaHS), as an exogenous H2S source, …
The Use Of Humor With Families During Pediatric Trauma Intake Assessments, Letitia Batton
The Use Of Humor With Families During Pediatric Trauma Intake Assessments, Letitia Batton
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Traditionally from a positive psychological view, humor is regarded as an adaptive force, a vital aspect of healing, and possibly a beneficial coping tool when faced with traumatic circumstances. Despite these beliefs, little is known about how humor relieves stress with parents in the initial intake assessment when their child has been traumatically injured. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore social workers' use of humor during pediatric trauma assessments. A sample of 6 parents were from pediatric parent trauma support groups to participate in this study, which employed a subject-intensive theoretical framework. Face-to-face interviews and participant observation …
