The Development And Use Of A Research Self-Efficacy Scale To Assess The Effectiveness Of A Research Training Program For Academic Librarians, Kristine R. Brancolini, Marie R. Kennedy
The Development And Use Of A Research Self-Efficacy Scale To Assess The Effectiveness Of A Research Training Program For Academic Librarians, Kristine R. Brancolini, Marie R. Kennedy
Librarian Publications & Presentations
Research self-efficacy – or research confidence – has been shown to be a predictor of research productivity. There is also some evidence that it is a mediating factor between the research training environment and research productivity. To explore the connection between research training and research self-efficacy, the authors developed, validated, and later expanded a scale to measure research self-efficacy among academic librarians. They used the expanded 38-item scale to measure the research self-efficacy of participants from a three-year research training workshop for academic librarians, comparing results before and after the workshop. Participants experienced significant increases in research self-efficacy across all …
The Stress Granule Transcriptome Reveals Principles Of Mrna Accumulation In Stress Granules, Sarah F. Mitchell
The Stress Granule Transcriptome Reveals Principles Of Mrna Accumulation In Stress Granules, Sarah F. Mitchell
Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Works
Stress granules are mRNA-protein assemblies formed from nontranslating mRNAs. Stress granules are important in the stress response and may contribute to some degenerative diseases. Here, we describe the stress granule transcriptome of yeast and mammalian cells through RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) analysis of purified stress granule cores and single-molecule fluorescence in situ hybridization (smFISH) validation. While essentially every mRNA, and some noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs), can be targeted to stress granules, the targeting efficiency varies from <1% to >95%. mRNA accumulation in stress granules correlates with longer coding and UTR regions and poor translatability. Quantifying the RNA-seq analysis by smFISH reveals that only 10% of …1%>

Selfish Genes And Lucky Breaks: Richard Dawkins' And Stephen Jay Gould's Divergent Darwinian Research Agendas, Timothy Shanahan
Selfish Genes And Lucky Breaks: Richard Dawkins' And Stephen Jay Gould's Divergent Darwinian Research Agendas, Timothy Shanahan
Philosophy Faculty Works
Darwin expressed alternative theoretical perspectives on a range of issues fundamental to our understanding of evolution, thereby making it possible for his intellectual descendants to develop his ideas in markedly different and even incompatible directions while still promoting their views as authentically “Darwinian.” The long-running and well-publicized scientific rivalry between Richard Dawkins and Stephen Jay Gould is a striking case in point. In elegantly written books and essays spanning the last quarter of the twentieth century, they developed and defended diametrically opposed views on the units of selection, the scope and depth of adaptation, the significance of chance events, and …
Toward Estimating Displaced Primary Production From Recycling: A Case Study Of U.S. Aluminum, Trevor Zink
Toward Estimating Displaced Primary Production From Recycling: A Case Study Of U.S. Aluminum, Trevor Zink
Management Faculty Works
Recycling materials from end-of-life products has the potential to create environmental benefit by displacing more harmful primary material production. However, displacement is governed by market forces and is not guaranteed; if full displacement does not occur, the environmental benefits of recycling are reduced or eliminated. Therefore, quantifying the true “displacement rate” caused by recycling is essential to accurately assess environmental benefits and make optimal environmental management decisions. Our 2016 article proposed a market-based methodology to estimate actual displacement rates following an increase in recycling or reuse. The current article demonstrates the operation, utility, and challenges of that methodology in the …
Osm1 Facilitates The Transfer Of Electrons From Erv1 To Fumarate In The Redox-Regulated Import Pathway In The Mitochondrial Intermembrane Space, Deepa V. Dabir
Osm1 Facilitates The Transfer Of Electrons From Erv1 To Fumarate In The Redox-Regulated Import Pathway In The Mitochondrial Intermembrane Space, Deepa V. Dabir
Biology Faculty Works
Prokaryotes have aerobic and anaerobic electron acceptors for oxidative folding of periplasmic proteins. The mitochondrial intermembrane space has an analogous pathway with the oxidoreductase Mia40 and sulfhydryl oxidase Erv1, termed the mitochondrial intermembrane space assembly (MIA) pathway. The aerobic electron acceptors include oxygen and cytochrome c, but an acceptor that can function under anaerobic conditions has not been identified. Here we show that the fumarate reductase Osm1, which facilitates electron transfer from fumarate to succinate, fills this gap as a new electron acceptor. In addition to microsomes, Osm1 localizes to the mitochondrial intermembrane space and assembles with Erv1 in a …

Clinical Implications Of Augmenter Of Liver Regeneration In Cancer: A Systematic Review, Deepa V. Dabir
Biology Faculty Works
Background/Aim: Hepatocellular carcinoma is a substantial healthcare burden with high prevalence and poor prognosiS. As such, efforts are continually made to uncover molecules relevant in cancer biology, that are exploitable as targets for therapy. The mitochondrion is the powerhouse of the cell and exhibits altered functionality in the malignant state, including aberrant regulation of apoptosis and cellular respiration. Augmenter of liver regeneration (ALR) is a multifunctional mitochondrial protein that demonstrates antioxidative and anti-apoptotic properties and plays a key role in liver regeneration. Materials and Methods: The present study systematically reviews the available literature on the role of ALR in cancer. …
Simultaneous Synergist, Antagonistic, And Additive Interactions Between Multiple Local Stressors All Degrade Algal Turf Communities On Coral Reefs, Sarah Joy Bittick
Simultaneous Synergist, Antagonistic, And Additive Interactions Between Multiple Local Stressors All Degrade Algal Turf Communities On Coral Reefs, Sarah Joy Bittick
Biology Faculty Works
1. Ecological communities are subjected to multiple anthropogenic stressors at both global and local scales that are increasing in number and magnitude. Stressors can interact in complex ways and are classified as additive, synergistic or antagonistic; the nature of the interaction is key to predicting changes and understanding community resilience. Coral reefs are among the most impacted communities and have shifted from coral to algal-dominated states, and overfishing, nutrient enrichment and sedimentation are local stressors that often cooccur and may support degraded algal states. Short algal turfs are abundant benthic space holders on healthy reefs that may be pushed by …

Metabolomic Profiling Of Chiari Malformation Type I: Comparison Of Bioinformatic Programs For Untargeted Analysis, Hunter W. Korsmo
Metabolomic Profiling Of Chiari Malformation Type I: Comparison Of Bioinformatic Programs For Untargeted Analysis, Hunter W. Korsmo
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Chiari Malformation Type I is a neurodegenerative trait that can result from disease or from acquiring. Metabolomic analysis was done on normal pressure hydrocephalous and Chiari CSF samples using LC-MS and multiple bioinformatic programs. After analysis from multiple programs, we were able to analyze the stringency in statistical algorithms done by each program and determined qualities that are shared between programs that offer multiple details. We identified dysregulation in glucuronated metabolites in CSF of Chiari versus NPH. Using LC-MS, we established the experimental MS/MS of glucuronic acid in attempt to identify similarities in mass-to-charge features primarily identified. We could not …
Determination Of Metabolic Change Associated With Subarachnoid Hemorrhage, Dominique Oates
Determination Of Metabolic Change Associated With Subarachnoid Hemorrhage, Dominique Oates
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Disturbances of iron metabolism caused by bleeding may directly impact neuronal function. As in Alzheimer patients, much of the neurodegeneration is due to oxidative stress in the brain caused by the break down of hemin. The same oxidative stress is present with the degradation of hematin in CSF. When hematin is degraded in the cytosol of the cell, it causes the release of Fe2+which is then oxidized into Fe3+. The oxidation of the iron produces the radical hydroxyl groups, which damages proteins and DNA. The disruption of these molecules result in subsequent apoptosis in neuronal cells.
Effects Of Small-Scale Turbulence On Phytoplankton Growth And Metabolism, Wilton Gray Burns
Effects Of Small-Scale Turbulence On Phytoplankton Growth And Metabolism, Wilton Gray Burns
Master's Theses and Capstones
Our current understanding of how turbulence affects small planktonic organisms is based on fluid dynamic theory, ocean models, and laboratory experiments that often have conflicting results. Atmospheric models predict that global temperature rise associated with climate change will affect turbulence patterns within the marine photic zone, where phytoplankton reside. To investigate how small-scale turbulence affects growth (growth rates, cell counts and extracted chlorophyll, and nutrient quotas) and metabolism (production of transparent exopolymer particles (TEP)) of marine primary producers, phytoplankton in monoculture and natural assemblages were incubated under a range of turbulent treatments. Results indicate that early in exponential growth of …

Nest Provisioning And Homing Behavior Of Cerceris Fumipennis (Hymenoptera, Crabronidae): A Useful Tool In The Biosurveillance Of Buprestid Beetles, Eleanor Ann Mccabe
Master's Theses and Capstones
Cerceris fumipennis (Hymenoptera, Crabronidae) is a ground-dwelling wasp that provisions its nest with woodboring jewel beetles (Buprestidae), making it a useful tool in biosurveillance of forest pests. In particular, C. fumipennis aggregations have been used for monitoring the invasive Emerald Ash Borer (Agrilus planipennis (Coleoptera, Buprestidae)) and by using this biosurveillance technique researchers have tracked the spread of this pest into new states and provinces. However, despite its success as a biosurveillance tool, information about much of the biology of Cerceris fumipennis is lacking. This study is focused on the biology and life history of C. fumipennis to better understand …

Site Specific Isotopic Labeling Of Phenylalanine And Tyrosine : Application To Pth1, Bhargavi Ramaraju
Dissertations
Structural insight into biological macromolecules furthers understanding of function and provides a variety of information about cellular processes. Though NMR spectroscopy can be utilized to provide such insight, limitations, including size, are significant barriers. Site specific isotope labeling can be used to provide information on a variety of systems including large, slow tumbling systems and membrane proteins that are not amenable to study by traditional means. In effect, site specific isotope labeling increases the size barrier and thereby number of macromolecular systems able to be studied by NMR spectroscopy. Methyl labeling has been established as a leading method for site …
The Effects Of Wing Flexibility On The Flight Performance And Stability Of Flapping Wing Micro Air Vehicles, James Edward Bluman
The Effects Of Wing Flexibility On The Flight Performance And Stability Of Flapping Wing Micro Air Vehicles, James Edward Bluman
Dissertations
Insect wings are flexible. However, the influence of wing flexibility on the flight dynamics of insects and flapping wing micro air vehicles is unknown. Most studies in the literature consider rigid wings and conclude that the hover equilibrium is unstable. This dissertation shows that a flapping wing flyer with flexible wings exhibits stable natural modes of the open loop system in hover, never reported before. The free-flight insect flight dynamics is modeled for both flexible and rigid wings. Wing mass and inertia are included in the nonlinear equations of motion. The flapping wing aerodynamics are modeled using a quasi-steady model, …

Quantum Dot Photoluminescent Dynamics And Exciton-Plasmon Coupling In The Presence Of Dielectrics, Metal Oxides, And Metallic Nanoparticles, Waylin J. Wing
Dissertations
Nanomaterials such as quantum dots (QDs) and metallic nanoparticles (MNPs) play an important role in physics and engineering, especially for applications such as next-generation display devices or computer processors. When used simultaneously, QDs and MNPs can couple together through a mechanism called exciton-plasmon coupling. This dipole-dipole coupling yields increased control over the optical properties of the combined system, such as enhanced emission, polarization selectively, and directionality of light. In this dissertation, a new method by which to increase the strength of exciton-plasmon coupling is presented which can boost the emission efficiency of QDs beyond the currently known plasmonic channels. This …

A High-Coverage Neandertal Genome From Vindija Cave In Croatia, Kay Prüfer, Cesare De Filippo, Steffi Grote
KIP Articles
To date, the only Neandertal genome that has been sequenced to high quality is from an individual found in Southern Siberia. We sequenced the genome of a female Neandertal from ~50,000 years ago from Vindija Cave, Croatia, to ~30-fold genomic coverage. She carried 1.6 differences per 10,000 base pairs between the two copies of her genome, fewer than present-day humans, suggesting that Neandertal populations were of small size. Our analyses indicate that she was more closely related to the Neandertals that mixed with the ancestors of present-day humans living outside of sub-Saharan Africa than the previously sequenced Neandertal from Siberia, …

Terrestrial animals must support their bodies against gravity, while aquatic animals are effectively weightless because of buoyant support from water. Given this evolutionary history of minimal gravitational loading of fishes in water, it has been hypothesized that weight-responsive musculoskeletal systems evolved during the tetrapod invasion of land and are thus absent in fishes. Amphibious fishes, however, experience increased effective weight when out of water – are these fishes responsive to gravitational loading? Contrary to the tetrapod-origin hypothesis, we found that terrestrial acclimation reversibly increased gill arch stiffness (∼60% increase) in the amphibious fish Kryptolebias marmoratus when loaded normally by gravity, …
